CAGE RAGE FIGHTERS
SUBJECT TO DRUG TESTING
Process To Begin With “EliteXC Presents Cage Rage 24’’
Streaming Live Dec. 1 on ProElite.com
LOS ANGELES (Oct. 17, 2007) – All fighters competing on upcoming Cage Rage fight cards will be subject to random drug testing, it was announced Wednesday.
Cage Rage, which recently was purchased by Los Angeles-based ProElite, Inc. (PELE.PK), is the biggest and most prestigious Mixed Martial Arts organization in the UK.
Gary Shaw, President of ProElite’s Live Events Division, EliteXC, initiated the idea to test the fighters
“Anybody that knows me knows that my No. 1 priority is the health and safety of the athletes,’’ Shaw said. “I wholeheartedly agree and support Cage Rage’s decision. This ensures that the highest safety standards will be in place each and every time a fighter competes in an EliteXC/Cage Rage fight card in Britain.’’
The process will begin before the “EliteXC Presents Cage Rage 24” Dec. 1 event that will be aired on pay-per-view live at ProElite.com.
“This shows that Gary Shaw and EliteXC truly have the fighters’ best interests at heart and are serious about promoting this great sport to the uppermost standard,’’ Cage Rage co-founder and promoter Dave O’Donnell said. “Drug taking will not be tolerated on a Cage Rage promotion.’’
Any fighter who appears on a Cage Rage show will be subject to random drug testing, which includes checking for anabolic steroids, stimulants, marijuana and cocaine. All fighters in world title fights will be tested.
MRI scan and ophthalmologic inspections will be introduced in early 2008, announced Shaw.

Update for the Week of October 15, 2007
EliteXC is full of huge news and we also have the next big ShoXC coming up on October 26th. Oh and “they call him Frank for a reason.”
* EliteXC has recently made two big headlines: Nick Diaz and Kimbo Slice! Nick Diaz is a former UFC fighter and one of the most talented MMA athletes in the world. He recently signed a long-term deal to fight for EliteXC (http://nickdiaz.proelite.com/). Kimbo Slice is an Internet phenomenon. He comes from a bare knuckle boxing background, but after some serious training with Bas Rutten has successfully made the transition to MMA (http://kimboslice.proelite.com/). Head over to their pages and give ‘em a SMACK to welcome them to the ProElite community!
If you haven’t had the chance yet, make sure to start your page today: www.proelite.com/registration
* On October 26th we have a large ShoXC event at the Chumash Casino and Resort. Featured on the card are Javier “Showtime” Vazquez, Aaron Rosa, Malaipet, and many other future stars. Tentatively we have another Mega-Chat in the forums with several fighters from the card, leading up to the show on October 26th (More on the live chat when we get the details!)
* The show itself will be broadcast live on Showtime at 11pm PT/ET, with the ProElite.com undercard live streaming at 6:30pm PT/9:30pm ET. The Undercard features several great fighters and is headlined by two heavyweight showdowns: Shane Del Rosario vs. Amedeo Viola and Fabricio Camoes vs. TBA. If you haven’t heard of these two, watch the live stream on ProElite.com. (Stay tuned for more information on upcoming fights as it becomes available. Fight card subject to change.)
* Frank Shamrock stopped by the ProElite.com offices for a brief conversation with our own “Yac Man” Ron Yacovetti (YouTube him, by the way for a few laughs). Frank is always up front and great for about 13 minutes of soundbites. It’s a revealing conversation about his training, the IFL, and his views on martial arts….and only ProElite.com brings it to you:

WRITER TO FIGHTER
Posted on | October 18, 2007 | No Comments
From Writer to Fighter, seriously
LEMOORE, Ca. — Jeremy Luchau never really intended to be a writer.
And he surely never planned to be a fighter.
“Not only have I never been in a combat sport before, I’ve never even been in fist fight before,’’ the Hanford Sentinel sports reporter said.
But Luchau will certainly be in a fight on Thursday night, when he faces Michael Satumbaga in a three-round mixed martial arts matchup at the Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino.
Luchau, a sports journalist for eight years, has been training to become an MMA fighter for 17 months, and recounting his experiences in a bi-weekly column known as “The Project.”
That “Project” will come to a climax when Luchau and Satumbaga tangle in a bout with a catch-weight limit of 165 pounds at the Palace Fighting Championship’s “Project Complete”.
Luchau’s journalism career began unexpectedly in Taft.
“My mom worked at the newspaper there, and I got a job in the press room. The sports reporter there quit, and the sports editor knew I played football [at Taft High], and asked if I could take stats at a game,’’ Luchau said. “I moved up from there.’’
The seeds for his MMA venture began in May of 2006, when he was doing a feature story on Hanford fighter Kenny Ento at the Valley Fight Club in Hanford.
“[Fight Club owner] D. Womack made a suggestion that I train for a week and write about it,’’ Luchau said. “And then I came back, and we talked about it some more, and than we talked about it with [Palace entertainment director] Christian Printup.’’
Eventually, the discussions evolved into placing Luchau in an actual fight, and the idea took off at that point.
“They wanted to make sure I had proper training,’’ Luchau said. “They didn’t just want to just send me out there and get my head bashed in.’’
So Luchau’s been training ever since — in Brazilian jiu jitsu, wrestling, boxing, Krav Maga and Muay Thai.
“Jeremy’s done a good job,’’ said Luchau’s trainer, Jacob Jeff of Team Ochoa. “He’s come a long way from when he first started.’’
Printup has seen the progress.
“On a personal level, I’m very proud of Jeremy,’’ Printup said. “He’s taken this very seriously and worked very hard.’’
Since Luchau had never been in a fist fight before, one of the more difficult aspects of his training was learning how to take a punch.
“I do not like getting hit in face. I was extremely … I would just say scared,’’ Luchau said.
Now he’s feeling more comfortable fighting in a stand-up style.
But that doesn’t mean he wants to do it too long with Satumbaga. Luchau’s game is grapping while Satumbaga specializes in Muay Thai.
The fighters are in the same boat in one respect. They’re both making their pro debuts.
Satumbaga is a late replacement for Fresno’s Shahob Nasrabadi (0-2), who pulled out of the bout.
A 23-year-old from Lemoore, Satumbaga is an engineering student at Fresno State.
“This is more like a hobby for me,’’ he said.
But it’s one he enjoys quite a bit. He’s been training for a year and has competed in amateur MMA events.
The strategies for the bout will be clear for both fighters.
“If Jeremy takes [the fight to the ground], he’ll end the fight,’’ Jeff said.
Satumbaga, the striking specialist, will try to prevent that from happening.
“Everybody’s telling me that since I took the fight on short notice, there’s not much I can do to [to change my style],’’ he said. “I’ll keep on doing what I’ve been doing and keep the gas tank full.’’
Featured on the card are three PFC Championship bouts. In one of the more highly anticipate fights ever at the Palace, Newport Beach’s Justin Levens (9-7) will take on Hanford’s Kenny Ento (8-2) for the vacant middleweight title.
Lemoore’s Poppies Martinez (11-3-1) vs. Stockton’s Brandon Jinnies (2-6) for the interim lightweight title and North Hollywood’s Lodune Sincaid (10-4) will take on Sacramento’s Jeromy Frietag (5-5) for the vacant light heavyweight crown.
Also on the card;
-Santa Rosa middleweight Nate Loughran (5-0) vs. San Bernardino’s Brian Warren (9-8).
-Ensenada, Mexico welterweight Olaf Alfonso (5-7) vs. Hesperia’s Thomas Denny (22-15).
-Hanford lightweight Jeremy Luchau (0-0) vs. Lemoore’s Michael Satumbaga (0-0).
-Fresno featherweight Jorge Evangelista (4-2-1) vs. Bakersfield’s Sergio Salcido (3-1).
-Hanford flyweight Luis Gonzalez (0-0) vs. Merced’s Josh Besneatte (0-1).
-Las Veagas light heavyweight Dewey Cooper (2-0) vs. Fresno’s Jimmy Dexter (1-3).
-Merced middleweight Phil Collins (4-3) vs. Visalia’s Marc De La Cruz (2-1).
-Parlier middleweight Mike Moreno (2-1) vs. Fresno’s William Harmon (0-0).
-Sacramento light heavyweight Mark Munoz (1-0) vs. Anthony Rubacalva (0-0).
-Lemoore middleweight Mike Martinez (1-1) vs. Visalia’s Rocky Molina (0-1).
Weighins are slated for Wednesday, Oct. 17th at 4 p.m. at The Den Sports bar located on the third floor of the Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino. Fight fans are encouraged to come see their favorite fighters.
Doors open for the fights on Thursday, Oct. 18, at 5:30 p.m. with the first fight slated for 6:30 p.m.

VERNO PHILLIPS WANTS TO FACE CORY SPINKS

VERNO PHILLIPS TO CHALLENGE CORY SPINKS
FOR IBF JR. MIDDLEWEIGHT WORLD TITLE
Negotiations are ongoing for Verno Phillips to challenge IBF jr. middleweight world champion Cory Spinks in Spinks’s next fight.
The IBF said in a letter that Spinks’ next mandatory title defense is due by November 3, and No. 3 ranked Phillips is the leading available contender. The date and site of the fight is still to be determined.
Verno is now 41-11-1 with 21 knockouts. The former IBF and WBO jr. middleweight world champion, he won the WBO jr. middleweight world title in October, 1993, and made four successful defenses before losing the title in November, 1995. He won the IBF jr. middleweight world title in June, 2004, and lost it in his first defense the following October.
He has now won three fights in a row. After his last fight, a 10 round unanimous decision against Eddie Sanchez in February, Dan Rafael wrote on ESPN.com, “Former titlist Phillips keeps on ticking, even at 37. He pounded out a clear decision against spoiler Sanchez in the ‘Friday Night Fights’ main event on ESPN2. It was the third win in a row for Phillips following a two-fight losing streak to Kassim Ouma (in a title bout) and Ike Quartey. Phillips keeps hanging around and we suspect someone will give him a shot at a bigger fight before he is through. After all the excellent fights he’s given us over the years, he deserves that.”
After Verno’s TKO win against Teddy Reid in August, 2006, Fightnews.com reported from ringside, “The former two-time world champion, and 20-year veteran of the sport, showed few signs of slowing down as he did a little bit of boxing, a little bit of brawling, and mainly a whole lot of hitting in recording a twelfth-round stoppage…”
Verno’s last loss was by a very close and controversial decision against former WBA welterweight world champion Ike Quartey in June, 2005.
The controversy came in the ninth round when Verno floored Quartey for the second time – it appeared to be a clear knockdown, but the referee ruled it as a slip. If it had been scored as a knockdown, the fight would have been a draw.
A pro since 1988, Verno fought top opposition throughout the 1990s and scored several impressive wins. He returned to the ring in June, 2000, after almost 2 ½ years off and has consistently shown that he is still at the top of his game.
He has fought former world champions Ike Quartey (L10), Kassim Ouma twice (L12, L10), Bronco McKart (W10), Julian Jackson (KO9) and Lupe Aquino (TKO7), Gianfranco Rosi twice (W12, L12), and Julio Cesar Vazquez (WDQ6).
