Duddy back in Ireland
Faces new opponent Saturday night in Dublin
NEW YORK (October 16, 2007) – WBO rated No. 2 contender John Duddy (21-0, 16 KOs) broke training camp in the Pocono Mountains this past weekend and arrived in Ireland for Saturday night’s fight in Dublin only to discover that his scheduled opponent, Noe Tulio Gonzalez Alcoba, had withdrawn due to a detached retina. Alcoba has been replaced by 19-year-old Prince Arron (10-2) in the 10-round main event.
Duddy, who hails from Derry (N. Ireland) but now lives in Queens (New York City), last fought July 14, defeating Alessio Furlan by 10th round TKO in the popular Irishman’s first fight as a pro in Ireland.
“I’m looking forward to fighting in Ireland again,” Duddy said, “but I just love fighting whether it’s in Ireland, New York, Boston or anywhere. I going back to show them how much I’ve improved since my last fight.”
Despite two opponent changes, Duddy remained fully focused because he prepares to fight the man put in the ring with him, leaving everything else to members of Clan Duddy, primarily his promoter (Irish Ropes) and manager (Tony McLoughlin).
Duddy has head trainer Don Turner, who has handled 19 world champions, in his corner for his second straight fight, and they have been working together for the last six weeks. “Everything seems to be much smoother this camp,” Duddy explained. “We had two weeks together in North Carolina before going to the Poconos. In North Carolina, I enjoyed talking with Don and we got to know each other better. I like listening to a man of experience, absorbing his stories and getting valuable tips. The training, too, has been a wee different this time. Our first camp we only had four weeks together, three at camp and the last during fight week.”
“I went to camp several times and saw steady improvement by John under Don,” Irish Ropes president Eddie McLoughlin added. “John has a new strength-and-conditioning coach, the same guy who works with the Klitschkos, and there’s been improvement in that area, too. Fans are going to see a big improvement in John this Saturday.”
Duddy has heard talk about him fighting new world middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik, or top contenders such as former title-holder Jermain Taylor and Sergio Mora, but it hasn’t been a distraction for John. “I don’t read my press clippings or anybody else’s clips,” Duddy noted, “but I’ve heard rumors and been asked about my next few fights. I leave that up to my promoter and manager. It is nice to be mentioned as part of plans for world champions and top contenders, but I have my own plans, and the idea has always been to work towards a title fight.”
Duddy is rated among the top 11 in all four major boxing organizations – WBO #2, WBC #4, WBA #6 and IBF #11.
“John has to focus on this fight,” McLoughlin remarked, “but I always have to be ready and in motion for his next fight. I can’t afford to wait because we have to make a transition from one fight to the next one. We’re listening to all comers and have several good options.”

Smith out, Jinnies in for PFC title tilt vs. Martinez
LEMOORE, Ca. — When Palace Fighting Championship World Lightweight champion Shad Smith was knocked out in early October, there were some very upset people.
And they weren’t just Smith fans.
“Obviously I was pissed when Shad Smith took the fight with Nam Phan knowing he was in violation of our agreement. At the end of the day a man’s word is all he has and now we know Shad Smith’s word and signature isn’t worth the paper it’s written on. I fault his inept management team for allowing this to happen. If I were Shad Smith I would seriously rethink my choice of management,” Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino Entertainment Director Christian Printup said.
San Bernardino’s Smith (9-8-2) was scheduled to defend his PFC title on Thursday at PFC 4’s “Project Complete” against Lemoore’s Poppies Martinez (11-3-1), but Smith was knocked out in an Extreme Fighters World Championships match against Westminster lightweight Nam Phan (13-4) in Anaheim on Oct. 6. The defeat came with a suspension from the California State Athletic Commission.
“This sucks. I trained hard for Shad, not that the training was a waste of time, but I wanted my revenge,” Martinez said.
“This is like a slap in the face. I guess he is trying to say that he can beat me again. His actions weren’t only disrespectful to me, but to the promoter and the fans. This is part of the sport, though. I really don’t know why he thought that Nam Phan would be a good fight for him. Nam is a great fighter. I’ve rolled with him before and he is tough.”
Martinez fell to Smith in March at PFC to submission in the PFC’s first title match.
Since Smith has lost a pair of fights and fought to a draw in another.
Stepping in on short notice is Stockton’s Brandon Jinnies (2-6), who is looking to break out of a 5-fight losing streak.
“When you’re looking at short notice situations a lot of factors come into play. We had a few options as replacements for Smith and we felt based on his overall amateur/pro record of 19-7 and the fact that he has proven to give a lot of tough fighters problems coupled with the fact that he and Poppies have shared unpleasantries in the past, that Brandon Jinnies would be a great replacement and provide the fans and Poppies with the type of fight that people pay to see,” Printup said.
Jinnies fought at PFC 3 in June, falling to Fresno standout Casey Olson (5-1) by decision.
“I really don’t know too much about Jinnies,” Martinez said. “I know he recently lost to Casey Olson and Shawn Bias. We are both coming off of losses and we are both hungry for a win. I’m coming to fight and I really don’t care who the hell it is.”
“Poppies is a good fighter that likes to put on a good show like me,” Jinnies added. “If I win then the PFC will have a real champ that will not back down from a fight.”
Martinez and Jinnies have built a bit of a rivalry through some internet message boards and disputes on myspace.com.
“He went on some forums and told some people that he wanted to fight me,” Martinez said. “I guess he, like some other guys in my career, is trying to make a name off of me. He called me out and now in a few days he has to walk the walk.”
Jinnies doesn’t think much of the war of words.
“It was just some myspace B.S. that was taken wrong,” Jinnies said. “He was talking just like I was.”
And now the pair can settle in the ring in a five, 3-minute round interim title fight.
“I think that Poppies and Jinnies match up well. Poppies was always known as a striker, now his wrestling is at the collegiate level, he’s a blue belt in jiu jitsu and he has hands of stone,” Printup said. “Brandon Jinnies is a resilient dude. He has no fear; he is dangerous, fearless and has a chip on his shoulder. He has fought all tough guys and given them problems. Plus he really dislikes Poppies and vice versa so I expect the fans to see a war.”
The winner will take on Smith in Jan.
“The fight between Martinez and Jinnies will be for the Interim Lightweight Title. Shad Smith will have to face the winner on January 17 or the Interim champion will be elevated to the full champion status,” Printup said.
There will be two other PFC Championship bouts contested on the 13-bout card. In one of the more highly anticipate fights ever at the Palace, Newport Beach’s Justin Levens (9-7) will take on Hanford’s Kenny Ento (8-2) for the vacant middleweight title and North Hollywood’s Lodune Sincaid (10-4) will take on Sacramento’s Jeromy Frietag (5-5) for the vacant light heavyweight crown.
Also on the card;
– Santa Rosa middleweight Nate Loughran (5-0) vs. San Bernardino’s Brian Warren (9-8).
-Ensenada, Mexico welterweight Olaf Alfonso (5-7) vs. Hesperia’s Thomas Denny (22-15).
-Hanford lightweight Jeremy Luchau (0-0) vs. Lemoore’s Michael Satumbaga (0-0).
-Fresno featherweight Jorge Evangelista (4-2-1) vs. Bakersfield’s Sergio Salcido (3-1).
-Hanford flyweight Luis Gonzalez (0-0) vs. Merced’s Josh Besneatte (0-1).
-Las Veagas light heavyweight Dewey Cooper (2-0) vs. Fresno’s Jimmy Dexter (1-3).
-Merced middleweight Phil Collins (4-3) vs. Visalia’s Marc De La Cruz (2-1).
-Parlier middleweight Mike Moreno (2-1) vs. Fresno’s William Harmon (0-0).
-Sacramento light heavyweight Mark Munoz (1-0) vs. Anthony Rubacalva (1-0).
-Lemoore middleweight Mike Martinez (1-1) vs. Visalia’s Rocky Molina (0-1).
Weighins are slated for Wednesday, Oct. 17th at 4 p.m. at The Den Sports bar located on the third floor of the Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino. Fight fans are encouraged to come see their favorite fighters.
Doors open for the fights on Thursday, Oct. 18th at 5:30 p.m. with the first fight slated for 6:30 p.m.

Blue Horizon Boxing Results 10-12-07

Yorgey Avenges Draw Against Clay
By Tony Penecale (at Ringside)
The first blemish on a boxer’s record is always a tough pill to swallow. Former heavyweight champion Joe Louis didn’t feel like the true champion until he avenged his first loss to Max Schmeling.
For fast rising contender, Harry Joe Yorgey, the opportunity to avenge his first blemish, a split draw against Martinus Clay 11 months ago, came this past Friday night, at a packed Blue Horizon in North Philadelphia.
While his performance wasn’t as dominant as the one-round annihilation Louis won over Schmeling, it was an impressive performance for the 29-year-old native of Bridgeport PA.
Yorgey, 154, opened the bout boxing behind a sharp jab, which he used to keep Clay, 154, Wilson NC, off-balance. The exchanges were few early as Clay was content to move and give angles. The pace picked up in the 2nd round as the surprisingly quick Clay was able to land a series of light punches while Yorgey countered with the heavier punches, punctuated with several hard body shots.
The action was back-and-forth over the middle rounds as Yorgey continued to move forward behind a sharp jab and land the harder blows. Showing no discouragement, Clay kept firing back when tagged, and was able to mark up the area around Yorgey’s eyes.
Sensing he was behind, Clay started to pick up the pace in the 7th round and pin Yorgey on the ropes with a volley of straight punches. Yorgey countered Clay’s offense, firing hard bodyshots and uppercuts which backed his opponent off of him.
Over the last three rounds, the fans were treated to some excellent technical boxing with both fighters exchanging toe-to-toe, countering each other’s offerings. At the final bell, the fans showed their appreciation with a standing ovation.
The unanimous tally went in Yorgey’s favor by scores of 96-94 and 98-92 (twice). This reported favored Yorgey by the score 97-93. With the victory, Yorgey improves to 20-0-1 (9) while Clay falls to a very deceiving 12-18-2 (4).
In the co-feature, untested heavyweight Faruq Saleem took a big step up in class, winning a close and somewhat unpopular over heavyweight trailhorse Sedreck Fields. Although Saleem came in the glistening undefeated record, it was the sub-.500 Fields who has been in with a who’s who of heavyweight boxing over the last decade.
Saleem,245, Newark NJ opened the bout boxing and looking for openings while Fields was content to be more of “Sedreck the Entertainer”, dancing , clowning and making faces. A Saleem punch after the bell angered Fields and a low blow in the 2nd had Fields on the verge of losing control.
Fields started to punch more in the 3rd round and although he was getting the worse of the exchanges, the momentum was changing as Saleem seemed unaccustomed to an opponent who didn’t crumble in front of him. The momentum made its full swing in the 4th as Fields was now in the groove, backing Saleem up and landed volleys of punches.
While Saleem was showing a lack of confidence, Fields was blowing his chance to win as he was content to point into the crowd and interact with the fans after almost every exchange.
At the end of six rounds, Saleem was completely spent with an energized Fields dancing on the ropes, sure of a rare victory. Two judges did not agree with him, awarding Saleem the decision by the score of 58-56, while the third judge scored it even at 57-57, as did this reporter.
Saleem sees his record improve to 37-0 (32) while Fields dips to 22-35-2 (16). There is talk of matching Saleem with popular slugger Joey “Minnesota Ice” Abell who has become a popular icon at the Blue Horizon.
In other bouts:
Junior Welterweight Prospect, “Hammerin” Hank Lundy made short work of late substitute Starr Johnson. Lundy, who was originally scheduled to take on former title challenger John Brown, took out his frustrations on Johnson, attacking him from the opening bell.
Lundy, 140, Philadelphia, neutralized Johnson’s significant advantages in height and reach, pinning him on the ropes. A lead left hook deposited Johnson, 146, Killeen TX, on the canvas where he barely beat the count. Lundy swarmed like a shark to blood and after a few seconds, Johnson was on the canvas again, where the bout was stopped.
Lundy keeps his undefeated record intact and now resides at 9-0 (6) while Johnson falls to 3-17-1 (2).
Louis Castro made his pro debut short and sweet with a destruction in 52 seconds over Elias Castillo. Castro, 132, Philadelphia ambushed the winless Castillo, 130, New York NY, immediately pinning him in his own corner and unleashing a vicious assault of right hands and body shots. Castillo was never able to escape the carnage and as he started slumping to the canvas, the referee wisely halted the contest.
Castro wins his pro debut to see his record at 1-0 (1) while Castillo still has the winless monkey on his back and is now 0-3
Popular Philadelphia female fighter Olivia Fonseca ran into a buzzsaw in the rugged and more-experienced Kimberly Harris. Fonseca, 152, came straight ahead early and ignored her height and reach advantage which put her right in her opponent’s danger zone. Harris, 151, Tampa FL, took full advantage and started punching at the opening bell.
Harris found a home for her right hand, repeatedly landing it over Fonseca’s low guard, which allowed to her control the first three stanzas. Fonseca showed true heart, firing back when hurt, but she was clearly outgunned, and her 4th round rally was too late, as Harris won the decision by scores of 40-36 and 39-37 (twice).
Harris improves her record to 5-9 while Fonseca dips to 1-1-1 (1).
Jules Blackwell, another local prospect, had a tough time with fellow southpaw Arthur Parker, before prevailing by majority decision.
Blackwell, 123, Phoenixville PA, used his longer arms to keep the shorter Parker, 123, Lancaster PA at bay, but had problems landing punches against Parker’s awkward defensive style. Unfortunately for Parker, his skills in offense were not on par with his defensive skills which let Blackwell control the pace and tempo over the course of the bout.
At the end, Blackwell was awarded a majority decision with two judges scoring him the victor by the counts of 40-36 and 39-37, while the third judge turned in a curious 38-38 score.
Blackwell also keeps his undefeated record intact and is now 6-0 (2) while Parker falls to 1-4 (1).
In what turned out to be a rough affair, undefeated Tommy Rainone was ultimately too fast and too slick for Jaime Morales. The southpaw Rainone, 148, New York NY, boxed early, giving angles and landing straight lefts while Morales was able to break through with several counters.
The bout started getting dirty in the 2nd and 3rd rounds with both boxers fouling on the inside with low blows and rabbit punches. Over the course of the final three rounds, Rainone was just too fast, much to the crowd’s chagrin, as they cheered on the few occasions that Morales was able to land a solid punch.
In the end, it was Rainone who prevailed by scores of 59-54 and 58-54 (twice).
Rainone also remains undefeated at 9-0 (2) while Morales falls to under .500 and is now 4-5 (2).
One-time surefire prospect and contestant on “The Contender: Season Two”, Aaron Torres was looking to rebound from a five-bout losing streak against Manuel Guzman.
Torres, 145, Philadelphia, used his advantages in speed and boxing skill to outbox and outmaneuver Guzman, 147, Lancaster PA. While it wasn’t a stellar eye-opener, it was a solid performance.
Torres won on all three scorecards by the tally of 59-55 and is now back in the win column at 15-6 (6), while Guzman is now 3-4 (2).
Boxing returns to the Legendary Blue Horizon on Friday, December 7 with boxers TBA.
