THERE IS NO OFF SEASON IN MMA: ANOTHER DISPATCH FROM THE MMA PROFESSOR

THERE IS NO OFF-SEASON
By: Charles Ward, CMIT – The MMA Professor © 2007

[mpinpage]

Athletes in most sports, professional and amateur, usually have a particular part of the year that is dedicated to competition. This period of time is commonly referred to as that sports’ season. The rest of the year is referred to as the off-season. Competitors are urged to train on their own time during the off-season so that when training officially starts up again, they are better prepared for it.

Combat sports athletes, however, do not have the luxury of an off-season. Professional fighters may have several fights scheduled throughout the course of a year that they need to properly prepare for. Therefore, it is imperative that they constantly train to maintain, and improve, their physical conditioning and combative performance training. A true fighter, a real warrior, doesn’t look at his or her art form as just a sport. To these athletes, their training and development in their martial arts is a way of life. A true warrior’s training never stops, and should continue with ever-increasing endeavor – throughout their lives.

The average recreational martial arts practitioner trains for about 4 to 5 hours per week, under qualified supervision and instruction. Put quite simply, that is not enough to qualify as a competitive combat athlete. Competitive fighters, both professional and amateur, need to spend at least 4 to 5 hours per day in training. Just because a combat athlete might only be able to receive a few hours of training and instruction per week from a qualified source, doesn’t mean that that’s the only method of training available. A dedicated warrior will self-train in many areas throughout any given week to increase his or her performance level. Fighters can work on their lesson material on their own, everyday, to improve movements and maneuvers, and hone their reflexes by repetitive reinforcement. They should physically condition themselves, everyday, to increase their levels of strength, stamina, and athletic ability. They should actively stretch, everyday, to keep their bodies flexible and pliable. They should study, read, and research materials that pertain to their sport (and art forms) to increase their knowledge and understanding of what they do. These areas of self-training can only be done by the individual athlete. Those that self-train religiously are the ones that end up being truly great, as opposed to the others who are merely average, or good at what they do. Fighters meet with their instructors and coaches to receive new information, new challenges, new material, and to review and critique existing knowledge and skills. To expect the instructor and/or coach to hold their hands through every facet of training is basically an insult. It is up to the fighters, as dedicated warriors, to train and push themselves in those areas so that when they are with qualified supervision, they can progress further, learn more, and go beyond what they did before. That will not happen if the fighters don’t self-train seriously, and rigorously.

Make no mistake, this is not an easy lifestyle to embrace. To a large degree, any rewards these athletes might receive will most likely not be vast recognition, fame, or wealth. The true rewards from choosing this life are far more personal and subtle than that. Making the commitment to the warrior lifestyle is nothing short of answering a calling from deep within oneself. Warriors are warriors not just by occupation, but by disposition. The ones who lack that true disposition might visit that world for a little while, but they will never stand the test of time. When making this commitment, one should consider the following quote, “See to it that you temper yourself with one thousand days of practice, and refine yourself with ten thousand days of training.” – Miyamoto Musashi

Real warriors will always hold themselves to a higher standard. This is how champions train – everyday! It isn’t easy, but nothing worthwhile ever is. If you want to be the best at something, you have to be a fanatic about it. You have to love it – completely, because just liking it won’t get you through the day!

POST FIGHT QUOTES

Joe Mesi: “I’m pleased. Obviously any quick ending to a fight is pleasing. A made a few mistakes; it had been a few months since I’d last fought. I was still surprised. Shannon is durable and courageous. I didn’t expect this (1st round KO). I didn’t want to expend too much early, but I guess I expended enough. This was my first fight for CES and Jimmy Burchfield. I think three more fights, stepping up each time, and I could be in line for a title shot. I hope to be back in the top 10 soon. I feel like I’m getting back to where I was. My timing, conditioning, and weight are all back.”

STEVE ALBERT TO BE INDUCTED INTO WORLD BOXING HALL OF FAME

STEVE ALBERT TO BE INDUCTED IN
WORLD BOXING HALL OF FAME

NEW YORK (Oct. 11, 2007) – Revered and highly regarded play-by-play announcer Steve Albert is being inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame on Saturday, Oct. 13 in Ontario, Calif., one of the sports highest and most respected honors.

“It is an honor to be inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame and to be a member of the class of 2007 among so many ring greats,” Albert said. “I am so humbled by all of this and it makes my 20th anniversary year at SHOWTIME that much sweeter.”

Fellow 2007 inductees include; Larry Holmes, Ricardo Lopez, Efren Torres, Alvaro Lopez, Gerald McClellan, Joe Cortez, George Benton, Jose Vazquez Dela Torre, Lily Rodriquez and Dick Sadler.

Albert will join a dignified Hall that includes the legendary Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvin Hagler, Michael Spinks, Charles “Sonny” Liston, Jake La Motta, Carlos Monzon, Rocky Marciano and Sugar Ray Robinson, among others.

During Albert’s 20 years as host of the acclaimed SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING series, the well-respected broadcast veteran has called some of the biggest and most memorable world championship fights in boxing history.

“When I began announcing fights on SHOWTIME in 1987, I could not imagine that I would still be doing boxing today,” Albert said. “But it has been a great ride.”

In 1993, Albert was ringside when Julio Cesar Chavez defeated Greg Haugen in front of the biggest crowd in boxing history, over 132,000 in Mexico City.

Albert called the 1996 Ring Magazine Fight of the Year – Mike Tyson vs. Evander Holyfield I — and the rematch, the bite fight which was seen, at the time, by the largest audience in pay-per-view history.

“It was surreal to have called a sporting event that generated such widespread awareness and touched everybody from die-hard boxing fans to casual observers,” Albert said. “It is something that reverberated throughout the world.”

In May 2005, Albert put words to perhaps the greatest fight of all time, Diego Corrales’ improbable 10th round come-from-behind victory over Jose Luis Castillo.

“Castillo versus Corrales (I) brought heart, determination and sheer guts to new and unimaginable heights,” Albert said. “It was unquestionably the best and most compelling fight I have ever had the privilege to announce.”

Albert’s resume includes nearly 250 telecasts; more than 450 fights; and more than 300 world title fights.

Bobby Gunn To Fight December 7th in Atlanta

For Immediate Release

Former IBA Champion and World ranked Cruiserweight Bobby Gunn 18-3 {15 KO’s} will attempt to continue his winning streak on December 7th at Club Europe in Atlanta, Georgia. Gunn is excited about his first trip to the Peach State and hopes to get another major fight in the near future.

“I was originally scheduled to fight November 17th in Virginia on another Han Kim card. The fight fell through because of certain people who sent the promoter bad checks. There were also a lot of empty promises which forced the cancellation of the show. However, real fighters fight and that’s why im quickly moving on”, said the WBO title challenger.

“Hopefully, I will get to fight Jorge Fernando Castro and that would be in early 2008. In the mean time, I am looking to make a bang in the state of Georgia on December 7th. There is a chance I’ll be fighting for a title in this fight”.

Gunn was also upset that George Blades will be given a nationally televised shot at Antonio Tarver on December 1st while he was lobbying for the fight.

“Styles make fights and this is unfair to the Showtime Network and boxing fans. Tarver and I would have made a great fight. I would love to fight Antonio in the future making 175 is no problem” said the hard punching Canadian.

PROELITE AND MARK BURNETT
TO PRODUCE PRIMETIME CELEBRITY MMA REALITY SERIES

NFL Great, Herschel Walker and MLB Star, Jose Canseco
Sign Up To Show the World Their Martial Arts ‘Chops’

Los Angeles – (Oct. 11, 2007) –Which professional athletes are really the toughest in the world? Stay tuned.

ProElite, Inc. [PELE.PK], an entertainment and media company dedicated to producing world-class mixed martial arts (MMA) events, today announced it has partnered with top television producer Mark Burnett to develop exclusive, multi-program MMA content for network TV.

The currently untitled initial series centers on former football and baseball stars, Herschel Walker and Jose Canseco, respectively, who together with a group of other former pros, train as a team to cross over into the sport of mixed martial arts. These athletes will fight with select EliteXC fighters in each episode with the series finale featuring a famous celebrity athlete match up. Additionally, episode highlights and interactive features for the shows produced will reside on ProElite.com. The show is co-created by Herschel Walker and Prem Akkaraju, who will also serve as a co-executive producer.

“We are really excited to partner with legendary reality television producer, Mark Burnett,” said Douglas DeLuca, chief executive officer of Los Angeles-based ProElite and co-executive producer of the show. “Mark’s vision for the sport of mixed martial arts, coupled with his invaluable experience producing a stable of successful primetime reality series, plays a critical role in developing this first of many projects that we will do together.”

“I am thrilled to collaborate with ProElite, and look forward to working with an organization that is dedicated to the growth of a sport that is sure to become among the biggest in the world,” said Mark Burnett, who produces CBS’s “Survivor” and ESPN’s “The Contender.’’ “I believe a primetime reality series involving world-class athletes from all sports competing in MMA will resonate with audiences far and wide as the sport garners popularity around the world.”

Walker and Canseco, who will both start recruiting teammates, are no strangers to hitting or MMA.

Walker, the 1982 Heisman Trophy winner and versatile, multi-faceted former pro football star, brings a diversity of athletic achievement that is at the core of the sport of MMA.

A 25-year martial artist who holds three black belts in three disciplines and a devoted teacher of physical and mental health, Walker was one of the first NFL players to take to the idea of heavy exercise training and physical fitness. He was noted for doing at least 2,500 crunches and 1,000 push ups every day in the off season as part of his training regiment.

Canseco, the 1986 American League Rookie of the Year and six-time Major League All-Star, became the first player in Major League history to hit at least 40 homers and steal at least 40 bases in the same year by smacking 42 home runs and stealing 40 bases in 1988. Known for clubbing monstrous, long-distance four-baggers, the colorful and controversial Canseco is an 18-year veteran of martial arts and also holds black belts in three categories.

“Attracting star professional athletes at the level of Hershel and Jose into a mixed martial arts competition is truly monumental and will certainly attract a broader audience to MMA,’’ said co-executive producer and co-creator Prem Akkaraju. “I am thrilled to work with executive producer Mark Burnett and co-executive producer Douglas DeLuca, and look forward to expanding our programming in short order.”
