Liakhovich Clarifies Situation
WBA #2-rated former WBO Heavyweight Champion Sergei “White Wolf” Liakhovich (23-2, 14 KOs) and his manager, Ivaylo Gotzev, say they’re enraged at the “weak attempts” being made by former WBA Champ John Ruiz and his people to discredit Liakhovich’s hard-earned reputation.
Responding to a press release issued today, in which Ruiz’s legal advisor, attorney, Anthony Cardinale, tries to paint Liakhovich as a reluctant warrior for his refusal to face Ruiz this Saturday in Chicago, Gotzev paints a clearer picture of the situation.
The original offer, until a few days ago, was for two ex-champions to fight each other without any guarantees that it would be for any kind of improved position in the rankings. The most we could have won (by facing Ruiz) was to remain WBA number two. There was nothing to gain other than two ex-champions fighting off-TV. We are in a position in the rankings to fight for a championship soon if we don’t take any stupid offers like this one.”
Gotzev further explains that he has in his possession a letter from the WBA ordering Team Liakhovich to begin negotiating with former champion Nikolay Valuev for an elimination fight to determine the #1 contender.
“Nikolay Valuev has made an open statement that he is ready to fight Sergei. The letter we have orders negotiations between Liakhovich and Valuev or a purse bid would ordered. The WBA later allowed Valuev to take a tune-up bout first, with the provision he would face Liakhovich next. And Valuev now he says he’s ready to face Sergei – that’s the fight we’re angling for and we’re confident the WBA will do the right thing now and enforce their original order.”

Cantrell vs Ward
Camp Cantrell Update
(Las Vegas, Nevada) Super Middleweight Warrior Roger Cantrell is in the midst of his biggest training camp and his handlers couldn’t be happier. Cantrell is nearly on weight (weeks ahead of schedule) and has taken Vegas by storm. “Roger’s first sparring session brought The Top Rank Gym to a stand still”, said promoter Brian Halquist. “Roger went five hard rounds and everyone in the gym stopped what they were doing and came over to the ring to watch – everyone gave Roger an ovation including Mayweather Sr. and Jr. Roger has never looked so good.”
Cantrell (12-0, 8KOs) will fight 2004 Olympic Gold Medalist Andre Ward (13-0,8KOs) on Showtime’s SHOBOX Series Friday, November 16, 2007 from the Becausejour Cricket Grounds in St. Lucia, the West Indies. (11PM Eastern and Pacific). Roger is on a vigorous training schedule that includes daily conditioning and sparring sessions. Cantrell’s trainer, Bill Hunt, who has worked with Cantrell since Roger was 14 years old, is very impressed. “I have watched Roger over the past 7 years and he has never been more mentally focused and physically prepared. He is working harder than he ever has before. Roger will be 110% ready physically and mentally; he will win this fight.” Hunt said.
Camp Cantrell will continue through early November when the team will break camp in Las Vegas and head to the luscious island of St. Lucia. The Cantrell-Ward fight will match two of the best undefeated fighters coming up in the Super Middleweight Division. Both have had very impressive amateur careers and are undefeated as professionals. This much anticipated fight should be a classic that will have boxing fans talking for a long time to come.
“The great thing about Roger is that he’s only 20 years old,” said a beaming Halquist.

We have come such a long way.”
The series reached new heights this year as The Emerald Queen Casino and Brian Halquist Productions saw ESPN come to town in January as The Contender – Season 2 star Walter Wright, a BHP signed fighter fought the main event. The series also had HBO Boxing – After Dark in town in July for the WBC Super Welterweight World Title Fight featuring Vernon Forrest and Carlos Baldomir. This was followed by Showtime’s successful SHOBOX Series that showcased undefeated Russian Victor Oganov (26-1,26KOs) being upset by Columbian slugger Fulgencio Zuniga (20-2,16KOs). There are two fights remaining on the schedule for this year, another SHOBOX fight, that will feature a12 round IBF Heavyweight Title Eliminator between Calvin “The Boxing Banker” Brock of Charlotte, NC (31-1, 23 KOs) and “Fast” Eddie Chambers of Philadelphia, PA (29-0, 16KOs). Rounding off the year will be Battle at the Boat 61.
“This has been an incredible year for Professional Boxing in the Pacific Northwest” said Halquist. “The fights we’ve had on TV and off have by far been greater than we ever imagined when we started at the beginning of the year. Our plan is to keep giving the NW Boxing fan the best shows we can and our plans for 2008 already include some huge fights.”

RANDY COUTURE TAKES THE HIGH ROAD AND LEAVES UFC HANGING

Randy Couture has left the UFC
By: Jack Bratcher
It’s true……..as of today Randy Couture has resigned from the UFC…….giving up his heavyweight title and his commentator job for the company. This comes one day after it was announced Fedor Emelianenko did not sign with the UFC but instead with M-1. That was the fight that Randy was wanting since Fedor was considered #1 in the world and since obviously that fight could not be made to happen Randy saw no reason to stay in the game. Randy had two fights left on his contract so he’s not allowed to fight for any other organization. If he choosed to come out of retirement again he has to come back to the UFC.
Randy is currently in South Africa filming the sequel to the Scorpion King as the lead role. Randy’s acting career is in overdrive and he has a MMA gym franchise that is doing really well and opening up gyms all over the U.S. so he doesn’t need the money that fighting would bring but he does love the competition. Many people view Randy Couture as the greatest MMA fighter on the planet and it is with sad news that his fans will watch him leave. Many fans had hoped for the day that he would face Fedor Emelianenko in the Octagon to prove once and for all who was the absolute best martial arts fighter on the planet. It looks like that day may never happen.
Good luck Randy!!!

DUDDY STEERED TO STEP UP AND FIGHT PAVLIK
Posted on | October 11, 2007 | No Comments
Unbeaten Derryman John Duddy looks to be just 2 fights away from the clash of his dreams – a world title showdown with the new poster boy of the middleweight division, Kelly Pavlik.
Duddy tackles former world title challenger Noe Tulio Gonzalez Alcoba at the Hunky Dorys Fight Night at the National Stadium on October 20th before another planned outing at the Kings Hall, Belfast on December 8.
Two wins before the end of the year would then set Duddy up for a crack at Pavlik’s newly won WBC and WBO world titles next March. That bout looks destined for Las Vegas with New York’s Madison Square Garden unavailable for the dates being discussed for a Duddy – Pavlik showdown.
However before Duddy can even think about Pavlik he will have to negotiate two very sizable obstacles on this side of the Atlantic first starting with his bout against Gonzalez Alcoba on Saturday week.
Duddy’s promoter Eddie McLoughlin said, “It’s tempting to get carried away with all the talk about Pavlik but it won’t count for anything unless we get past this fight in Dublin. Then all going well John will box at the legendary Kings Hall in Belfast on December 8th and then in the New Year we’ll turn our attention to Pavlik.”
McLoughlin confirmed that a St. Patrick’s weekend showdown with Pavlik is now more likely to take place in Las Vegas rather than New York with Madison Square Garden’s diary already full for that weekend.
McLoughlin continued, “John doesn’t have the luxury of looking beyond his next fight but obviously we need to have long terms plans in place for him and the December 8th date at the Kings Hall would set us up perfectly for a world title fight in the New Year.”
Promoter Brian Peters says he would be delighted to showcase the exciting Duddy in front of Belfast fight fans. “It would be great to put John on in the Kings Hall.
“Everybody knows about the famous McGuigan nights there in the 80’s and I think a Duddy fight there would recreate the same kind of atmosphere there again. There’s an excellent crop of Belfast based fighters coming up through the ranks as well and they would benefit hugely from fighting in front of a big Belfast fight crowd.”
Duddy though is refusing to be distracted by any elaborate plans for his future and is instead focused directly on the task at hand in Dublin next weekend.
“Gonzalez will be very tough and very durable,” predicted Duddy. “He just put up a great effort for a proper world title in just his 15th fight so you have to take a guy like him very seriously. He pushed Felix Sturm very hard for the whole 12 rounds over in Germany and Sturm is a great champion.
“He won’t be coming all the way from South America to Ireland for the sunshine, that’s for sure, he’s coming to beat me up and get himself another world title fight but that’s the position I’m in as well so it should make for a good night.”
Tickets for the “Celtic Tigers” Hunky Dorys Fight Night at the National Stadium, Dublin on October 20th are priced from €50 and are available from Ticketmaster.ie and all usual outlets.
