TOM HAUSER’S NEW BOOK RELEASED TO GREAT FANFARE

Posted on | September 20, 2007 | No Comments

The University of Arkansas Press is proud to announce the publication of a new book by acclaimed author Thomas Hauser.

Tom Hauser has become “must reading” in the boxing community, and his latest collection of columns demonstrates why. “The Greatest Sport of All” recreates another year in professional boxing and adds to the definitive record that Hauser is creating of the contemporary boxing scene. The book includes an inside look at great fighters, great fights, and the powers behind the throne. There are revealing portraits of contemporary luminaries, a look back at giants like Joe Louis and Muhammad Ali, and more.

“The Greatest Sport of All” is available at bookstores and through Amazon.com, Barnesandnoble.com, and other major websites.

PRAISE FOR THOMAS HAUSER’S WRITING:

Larry Merchant (HBO Sports): “Nobody else does what Tom Hauser does for boxing. And if they tried, they couldn’t do it as well.”

Jim Lampley (HBO Sports): “There are two kinds of people in boxing. Those who say, ‘Oh, boy; Tom Hauser is writing an article about me,’ and those who say, ‘Big problem; Tom Hauser is writing an article about me.'”

Teddy Atlas (ESPN): “Thomas Hauser gives boxing fans a press pass into restricted places.”

Jerry Izenberg (Newark Star-Ledger): “Thomas Hauser is the rarest of the rare among boxing writers. He’s a relentless reporter, a good listener, a thorough source-developer, a conscientious fact-checker, and a superb writer. If Hauser writes it, you know it’s true.”

Jay Larkin (former head of Showtime Boxing): “Thomas Hauser is the conscience of boxing, which makes him the conscience of the unconscionable.”

Lennox Lewis: “Thomas Hauser respects boxing and boxers. He gives readers insight into what happens in and out of the ring. Everything he writes is fair-minded and reality-based with a human touch.”

DUVA NOT HAPPY SAM PETER WON’T BE THE LAST ONE TO WIN A WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP IN OLD MSG RING

Posted on | September 20, 2007 | No Comments

For Immediate Release

DUVA SAYS RAPPAPORT WAS DISRESPECTFUL OF MSG SACRED RING FOR INSISTING ON CHANGE PRIOR TO MASKAEV-PETER WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP; ADDS THAT PETER WILL CHRISTEN IN NEW GARDEN RING WITH A VICTORY

New York, September 20—Dino Duva, president of Duva Boxing, the promoter of WBC no. 1 contender Samuel Peter, was very emotional about the fact that the sacred Madison Square Garden boxing ring has been retired before Peter’s October 6 World Heavyweight Title fight against Oleg Maskaev, and not after the fight.

“Yesterday, I had chills the entire time during the MSG ring retirement ceremony,” said Duva. “Anyone whose life has been boxing had to feel that way. I was always told that the plan was to retire the ring AFTER the October 6 event, meaning Samuel would be able to be the last fighter to win a world championship in this sacred ring.

“It was a bush league, disrespectful manuever by Dennis Rappaport, to insist on that clause changing the size of the ring without my knowledge or approval,” added Duva. “And this was all over a one and a half foot total difference in ring size!

“Not that one and a half feet, or even ten feet, would make a difference in the outcome,” wrapped up Duva. “There will be a major victory for Samuel, but it would have been wonderful for Sam to be the last Champion in history to walk out of that ring. However, there will be a sliver lining to this: Samuel Peter will now be the FIRST fighter in history to win a world title in the new MSG ring, which I’m sure over time will have an equal amount of history to it.”

UFC FIGHT NIGHT POST-FIGHT COMMENTARY

[mpinpage]

Here’s Jack Bratcher’s commentary on the fights that aired tonight on Spike TV’s UFC FIGHT NIGHT:

FIGHT 1 – Nate Quarry is coming back after very serious back surgery. Many people probably enver would have stepped back in the fight game after what he went through with that surgery. nate quarry defeats pete sell with a vicious knockout…….oooh it was ugly

what was crazy is that quarry had been dropped earlier, knocked right to the floor, but recovered and came back to win

by knockout. it was an impressive victory. you could tell quarry had alot of ring rust and took quite a few hard shots but

showed great heart as he stuck it out and came back with the win. 3rd Round KO for Quarry.

FIGHT 2 – Oh my god………Nate Diaz looked SO impressive. Unbelieveably impressive with a first round submission over Junior Assucao with a very interesting guiatine. They locked up almost immediately then Nate tripped Junior to the ground where Nate was looking for a Kimora armlock but couldn’t quite get it….finally they get back to their feet and Nate throws about three or four quick punches that rocks Junior hard…..I’m sorry man I just saw the replay and he threw about six or seven punches VERY fast…..beautiful boxing……I thought he was almost knocked out………but it was enought to take him to the ground where Nate sunk the guiatine to win!! Wonderful performance by Diaz……looking better than I had expected and you can tell this kid is improving by leaps and bounds.

It appears Nate Diaz is sponsored by Ecko Unlimited now. That’s a nice sponsorship to get with for sure.

FIGHT 3 – Chris Leben vs. Terry Martin. First round Leben gets docked 1 point for holding the fence ast Martin picks him up for a slam. Both fighters exchanged punches. Leben ate at least one good one. Chris threw some good knees, leg kicks, and punches and foot stomps. Round 2 Leben using foot stomps. Leben looks in good shape. He’s lving in Hawaii now and looks like a more intelligent fighter. Leben isn’t swinging for the fences anymore and is fighting more methodical and patient. He looks better than we’ve seen him….conserving energy. Marting may be getting a bit tired. Martin has one punch KO power and is 16-2. Basically Martin is just punching with an occasional takedown but once on the ground he doesn’t really do anything and has just let Chris up twice. This is definitely a more mature and seasoned Leben. He’s training people now in Hawaii and that may have helped him alot. Leben goes for a triangle and comes really close. Round ends with Martin in a triangle. Third round….clinch…Martin lands left hook, and a right. Martin throws big right and connects. Leben connects. Both swingin…..martin catches leben’s leg and takes him down. In leben’s gaurd…..both throwing little punches. Martin stands up again….he just keeps letting Chris back to his feet. He wants that KO. Martin looks tired. Leben looking a little tired too. Leben got takedown but Martin reverses and lands on top. Back on the feet. Martin rocks Leben but Leben throws back one two one two and TERRY MARTIN GETS KNOCKED OUT!!! Chris was hurt man…he was wobbly….but comes back with a one two uppercut and Terry Martin is flat on his back. I’m so glad for Leben man he really needed that!!!! Beautiful beautiful finish!!!

FIGHT 4 – Kenny Florian vs. Din Thomas. Round 1 the fighters are kind of feeling each other out not much going on then Din shoots in for a takedown and appears to have blown his knee out because Florian gets on his back and throws about 50 shots to the back and side of his head and the ref just won’t stop it even though Din is doing nothing…….so finally Florian gets him in a rear naked and forces him to tap. Din has to be helped out of the octagon because of the knee. Obviously he blew the knee out and just coudlnt do anything. A crappy finale but at least all the other fights made up for this.

TAYLOR VS. PAVLIK PREVIEW: WHO WILL STAY UNDEFEATED

Posted on | September 20, 2007 | No Comments

By: Patrick McElligott

Boxing fans will be treated to one of the most important cards of 2007 on September 29, when Jermain Taylor (27-0-1, 17 KOs) defends his middleweight title against Kelly Pavlik (31-0, 28 KOs). HBO will be broadcasting the
fight live from Atlantic City.

The undercard features the explosive young welterweight contender Andre Berto (19-0, 16 KOs) against tough David Estrada (21-3, 12 KOs). Berto is an exciting fighter, with power in both hands. However, as I reported after his last fight, in which he decisioned journeyman Cosme Rivera, Berto begins to square his stance and widen his punches after five rounds. This allowed Rivera to floor Rivera with a hard shot late in the sixth round. Berto was lucky the round was over, and luckier still that his corner was allowed to pull an old Dundee trick and give him an extended rest period.

Estrada went 10 rounds with Shane Mosley in 2005, and almost completed 10 with Kermit Cintron. Since then, he has won three straight knockouts. He will be looking to frustrate Berto in the first half of their fight, and to
hurt him with counter punches in the second half.

If Berto concentrates on the body early, he should win the fight. But it is going to be his biggest test so far, and David Estrada is capable of pulling off an upset.

The main event is one of the most highly anticipated fights of the year. Jermain “Bad Intentions” Taylor was an outstanding amateur boxer, who was a national champion in the late 1990s, and won the bronze medal at the 2000 Olympics.

Pavlik was also an amateur star, who won national titles in ’98 and ’99. His amateur record was 89-9. One of those losses was to Jermain Taylor.

Taylor had a higher profile in his early professional career. He was impressive in beating the competition placed in front of him. After he stopped undefeated Daniel Edouard in three rounds in early 2005, he challenged Middleweight Champion Bernard Hopkins.

Many questioned if the young, athletic challenger was ready to meet the aging, but still great champion. But in July, 2005, Taylor won a close decision and captured the title. Five months later, he won a more convincing
decision over B-Hop.

His next three defenses were against tough challengers Winky Wright, Kassim Ouma, and Cory Spinks. The fight against Wright was ruled a draw, and Taylor won decisions over Ouma and Spinks. Some fans questioned his fighting guys who were considered to be junior middleweights; however, Wright recently fought at light heavyweight, and Spinks had trouble making the middleweight limit.

Kelly “the Ghost” Pavlik’s early professional career did not get the national attention that Taylor’s did. Sometimes, “numbers” are worthy of our attention, and it is interesting to note that the combined record of Kelly’s first five opponents was 12-50-3.

However, his last five opponents have had a combined record of 130-13-3. On the undercard of the Taylor vs Spinks fight, Pavlik destroyed top contender Edison Miranda in seven rounds. Miranda had made the mistake of looking past Pavlik, and thinking he was going to be fighting Taylor. Pavlik showed that he not only is a hard puncher, but he is a highly intelligent fighter: he made the Miranda fight “easy” by moving the usually aggressive Miranda backwards.

Pavlik also showed impressive endurance. Again, the numbers bear this out: he has scored six first round knockouts, and twelve in the 2nd; however, he has also scored nine KOs in 6 or more rounds.

Taylor in 29 years old, and Pavlik is 25. Though the amateur victory gives Taylor a slight advantage, the age difference would have been more of a factor in their teens than it will now. Jermain is 6’ 1″, and Pavlik is
listed as an inch and a half taller; however, Pavlik has a 75″ reach, which may become a significant factor in the fight. Taylor has Emanuel Steward in his corner, which is a big advantage between rounds.

In the October Boxing Digest, Phil Woolever noted that the outcome of the fight will likely be determined in the opening rounds, and that it could end early. That is true. It is also likely that the first couple rounds will be
a chess match, with each fighter showing the other the respect each deserves, and attempting to measure the distances for their best advantage.

Pavlik will move forward, with straight, hard punches. Taylor will give him angles, and attempt to counter with fast combinations. It will be interesting to see which warrior is able to land punches inside the other man’s blows. If Taylor can land, then he will have to decide if he should step up the pace, and look for a TKO in the middle rounds, or be patient and look for a decision. That will be important, because Taylor has had some
difficulty with endurance in the late rounds – and that may be when Kelly Pavlik poses the biggest threat to Jermain Taylor!

Enjoy the fights.

ROBERT “THE GHOST” GUERRERO
VS
MARTIN HONORIO
NOVEMBER 3RD ON SHOWTIME

Press Release For Immediate Release

Two-Time World Champion
Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero
“I’m happy and appreciative that my fight with Martin Honorio has been rescheduled. I want to thank my management team, GoossenTutor, Goldenboy and Showtime for the opportunity to showcase my skills on a national stage. I’ve worked real hard to get to this point and I plan to show the world that I belong with the best fighters in my division. On November 3rd, you will see a warrior in me thats going to lay it all on the line.” – Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero

LOS ANGELES (Sept. 15, 2007) – Boxing fans were left disappointed last week by the announcement that the WBC super featherweight title bout between Juan Manuel Marquez and Rocky Juarez was called off due to a Marquez injury, but thanks to some quick work by Golden Boy Promotions and SHOWTIME, this championship bout has been quickly rescheduled – along with the IBF featherweight title bout between Robert Guerrero and Martin Honorio – for Saturday, Nov. 3.

“Marquez-Juarez is a fight the fans wanted to see, and we pulled out all the stops to make it happen before the end of the year,” said Oscar de la Hoya, president of Golden Boy Promotions. “But we couldn’t have done this without Ken Hershman and SHOWTIME. We thank them for helping us put this great fight back on and are excited to be promoting our first SHOWTIME event.”

“Delivering real fights for real fight fans on the first Saturday of every month is our trademark,” said Hershman, senior vice president and general manager, Showtime Sports & Event Programming. “We are excited to be working with Oscar and his company and we’re proud to deliver such a compelling match-up on the network.”

Marquez, the WBC super featherweight champion, was forced to withdraw from his original date with Juarez (this Saturday, Sept. 15) after suffering an infection in his right hand. Doctors have assured the champion that he will be healed and ready to go for the rescheduled date of Nov. 3.

Marquez vs. Juarez, which headlines an exciting night of world-class professional boxing presented by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Romanza Productions, will air live on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING beginning at 9 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).

Mexico City’s Juan Manuel Marquez (47-3-1, 35 KOs) captured his second world championship and launched himself back into the upper reaches of the pound-for-pound list with a thrilling victory over the legendary Marco Antonio Barrera on March 17 of this year. Marquez, one of the best technicians of this era, is also known for his warrior heart, which led him to get off the canvas three times in the first round and battle to a 12-round draw against Manny Pacquiao in their Fight of the Year candidate in 2004. Houston’s Rocky Juarez (27-3, 19 KOs), a 2000 Olympic Silver medalist for the United States, has also met with great success in the pro ranks. Best remembered for his two bout series with Marco Antonio Barrera, the aggressive Juarez has won two in a row in 2007 and is eager to make it three by taking Marquez’ world title.

One of the most exciting young champions in the sport today, Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (20-1-1, 13 KOs) was considered to be a slick boxer early in his pro career, but has since developed into a two-fisted boxer-puncher who is deadly in all aspects of the sweet science. In his last bout, the 24-year old from Gilroy, California won the vacant IBF featherweight crown with an impressive ninth round TKO of veteran Spend Abazi. In Martin Honorio (24-3-1, 12 KOs), Guerrero will be facing a hungry contender who has waited a long time for his shot at the world title. Unbeaten in his last seven fights, this Mexico City resident is coming off solid back-to-back wins over Rogers Mtagwa and Joe Morales to earn this title opportunity.

A venue for the Nov. 3 Marquez vs. Juarez fight will be announced shortly.

SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING’s Steve Albert and Al Bernstein will call the action from ringside with Jim Gray serving as roving reporters. The executive producer of the SHOWTIME telecast will be David Dinkins Jr., with Bob Dunphy directing and Ray Smaltz producing.
