BANTAMWEIGHT TITLE ON THE LINE AT PFC 3

Posted on | July 11, 2007 | 1 Comment

Electric bantamweight title tilt to highlight PFC 3

LEMOORE, CA — Sacramento bantamweight David Espinosa has quickly become one of the Palace Fighting Championship’s favorite fighters.

“Espinosa might as well be renamed Explosivnosa. He’s a great athlete, very competitive and seems to never run out of energy,” Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino Entertainment Director Christian Printup said. “His game is a lot like Urijah Faber’s and considering the amount of time they’ve trained together that’s not surprising.”

Espinosa appeared on the first two PFC cards and won in convincing fashion both times. At PFC 1 he stopped Sacramento’s Nelson Ocampo (0-1) by rear-naked choke in the second round and then in March at PFC 2 defeated rugged veteran Ed Tomaselli (3-3) of Albuquerque, New Mexico by technical knockout in the first round.

So, Espinosa (3-0) was a likely choice when the PFC put the bantamweight title on the line for the July 19th “Step Up” card at the Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino in Lemoore.

The surprise came with the selection of Porterville’s Shawn Klarcyk, who is coming off a loss to Merced’s Brain Granados in March at Gladiator Challenge.

“Shawn Klarcyk is probably the most underrated, sleeper out there in the bantamweight division,” Printup said. “He’s an amazing grappler and wrestler and is very much like Tyson Griffin was when he fought as a 145 pounder. Klarcyk is huge for the bantamweight division.”

Prior to the loss, Klarcyk (5-1) rattled off five victories in the span of a year and was being hyped as one of the top bantamweight fighters in California.

“This is the best possible bantamweight fight for the Championship. Both guys are young, talented and hungry,” Printup said. “They both know whoever wins this fight is going to be able to pay their bills with more ease every month. That has a way to motivate people.”

The pair have very similar in styles and are expecting a similar fight to come to fruition.

“He has a good record that shows he’s not afraid to finish the fight. With his wrestling background I’m confident he’ll come in shape,” Espinosa said. “As far as I know he didn’t wrestle competitively beyond high school. As a Division 1 wrestler, I think I’ll have the edge in the clinch and on the ground. But I plan to hit him and hit him hard.”

“David is 3-0, and comes from a great team, training with Urijah Faber. I am sure he is going to be well conditioned and as eager to win the belt as I am,” Klarcyk said.
All championship fights are five, 3-minute rounds.

“It’s hard to say how I see the fight turning out, there are a lot of things that can happen in a fight,” Klarcyk said “Just like any one else, I am hoping to bring the belt home, and I will be ready to go the distance to achieve that.”

Espinosa can only envision the fight finishing one way.

“With a gold belt around my waste,” he said.

“The PFC is awesome. They treat the fighters like family over there. They put on an awesome show and continue to bring in talented fighters,” Espinosa added.

Oroville’s Shawn Bias (10-4) challenges Minnesota’s Aaron Maldonado (4-0) for the vacant featherweight crown.

In the main event, Lemoore’s Chris Botelho (4-2) takes on Bakersfield’s Josh McCartney (1-1) in a welterweight eliminator.

In other bouts:
— Fresno’s Casey Olson (4-1) takes on Stockton’s Brandon Jinnies (2-5) in a lightweight bout.

— Lemoore’s Kenny Ento (6-2) fights Palika Drummondo (2-3) at middleweight.

— Calousa’s Ruben Villareal (11-13-3) takes on Tulare’s Rafael Del Real (4-5) in a heavyweight bout.

— Las Vegas’ Dewey Cooper and Adam Smith of Venice Beach are slated to tangle in their pro debuts at light heavyweight.

— Las Vegas’ Angelo Antuna (4-0) challenges Palmdale’s Seth Dikun in a featherweight fight.

— In a welterweight fight, Lemoore’s Mickey Martinez (2-0-1) battles Bakersfield’s Robert Breslin (3-6-1).

— Sacramento’s Mark Munoz (0-0) makes his light heavyweight debut against Elk Grove’s Donny Easterling (0-2).

— In a featherweight bout, Fresno’s Ralph Lopez (2-0) meets Sacramento’s Louie Moreno (1-2).

— Lemoore’s Elvis Franco makes his pro featherweight debut against Anahiem’s Scott Brommage (0-2).

— Visalia’s Mike Cook (3-1) tangles with Bakersfield’s Paul Mince (4-3) in a heavyweight bout.

— Coalinga’s Mario Rivera (3-4) meets Bakersfield’s Joe Chaidez (2-0) in the welterweight division.

— Sacramento’s Jeremy Freitag (4-5) returns to action at the Palace against Philadelphia’s Lamont Lister (3-2) in a light heavyweight showdown.

— In a bantamweight eliminator, Jason Georgianna (3-0) takes on Visalia’s Brandon Miller (2-0).

—In a last minute addition to the card, Brazils’ Cleverson Dezonet (1-1) will meet Visalia’s Bobby Rivas, who will be making his professional debut, in a welterweight bout.

Weigh-ins are slated for Wednesday, July 18th at 4 p.m. at The Den Sports bar located on the third floor of the Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino. Fight fans are encouraged to come see their favorite fighters.

THE MMA PROFESSOR PROVIDES HIS PROFESSIONAL TRAINING ADVICE

LEARNING VS. RE-LEARNING

BY: CHARLIE WARD, CMIT – THE MMA PROFESSOR © 2007

[mpinpage]

We’ve all heard this before: “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.” There are many other quaint little sayings that make the same point; Once someone is set in their ways, it is very difficult for them to change. The change in question could be purely behavioral, purely physical, but most likely it’s a combination of the two. While I agree that changing an ingrained behavior, skill, or habit can be difficult—it is not impossible.

If someone makes the conscious decision to willingly accept whatever change is needed, then success will follow. However, without that constant, conscious reminder, the person quickly reverts to old habits.

This can be extremely frustrating for martial arts students who are cross-training in various art forms, or who make a switch from one art form to another. Chances are good that several techniques will be similar, or even the same in some cases, but there are almost always subtle nuances that each instructor passes on to his or her students. These subtle differences manifest themselves not only in how the student physically delivers each technique, but also in how the student perceives each technique taught in every lesson.

If you happen to fall into the category of a student who is cross-training, or has switched from one art to another, then you can do yourself—and your instructor—a huge favor by approaching each lesson with an open attitude towards the learning process. Sometimes you will catch yourself thinking (or saying) something like, “But I learned it this way before”—or “We didn’t do it this way at my other school”—and so on. If you notice this happening to yourself, you should quickly adjust your thinking and internal dialog. Make the conscious decision to put previous lessons on the shelf, and open your mind to a different approach. Otherwise, your subconscious will resist the new material without you even knowing it. Ask yourself what kind of art form you are currently studying. Is it a sport-type of martial art, an aesthetic art form, or a no-nonsense combat system? There is a world of difference between those distinctions, and often that will mean a different approach in teaching methods and techniques.

I want you to consider this African proverb: “If you refuse to be made straight when you are green, you will not be made straight when you are dry”. The term “green” refers to a beginner experiencing something new. Now make no mistake here, whatever rank you might have held in another art form—if you are training in a new and different art form—then you have once again become a beginner. If you can let go of your ego long enough to consciously tell yourself that you are “green”, then you can re-learn certain lessons and be made “straight”, or correct, in your new art form.

This open attitude is entirely up to the student to perform. The instructor, no matter how hard he or she might try to instill this proper attitude, cannot do it for you. It is up to you to willingly, and consciously, make this change within yourself. Can people really change themselves? Yes. Is it difficult? Definitely, but it can be done! Ask yourself if this is a change you really want to make. If the answer is yes, then you have the motivation right there at your disposal. This adjustment will make your life in training much easier and more enjoyable—not to mention your instructor’s life as well!

SPARKS FLY AT FIREWORKS IN THE CAGE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Steele Cage Promotions 7/7/07 MMA Event Makes Big Splash:
Eastman vs. Kimmons Title Fight Candidate for 2007 Fight of the Year

—————————————————————————————-

Las Vegas, Nevada – July 10, 2007 – Hall of Fame Boxing Referee Richard Steele and Steve Oshins, co-owners of Steele Cage Promotions, LLC (www.steelecage.com) and the International Fighting Organization, LLC (IFO), are pleased to announce the success of their long anticipated Fireworks in the Cage mixed martial arts promotion held on July 7, 2007 at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The ten-card bout featured three IFO world title fights. Steele and Oshins wish to give a special thanks to Vice President John “Ski” Stachofsky and Chief Operating Officer Jeff Zimmerman for helping make this event such a success. “Without them and the rest of our team, we wouldn’t be where we are today,” stated Richard Steele. “We also wish to thank our Platinum Sponsor, VegasFuel Energy Drink, for the support they have given us,” Steele continued.

1. Marvin “The Beastman” Eastman (14-7-1) vs. Rob “The Rosedale Reaper” Kimmons (17-3) – This fight for the IFO Middleweight Championship was the main event and more than lived up to all the pre-fight hype. From the time the first punch was thrown to the final bell, the enthusiastic crowd yelled as each fighter took turns striking the other with the sound of the blows penetrating the entire arena. Eastman got the better of Kimmons as Kimmons at times smiled at Eastman after taking a blow to the head. This candidate for MMA fight of the year answered the question about Eastman’s ability to come down in weight from 205 to 185 as he was in the best shape of his career. Kimmons proved to be a game fighter with a chin of granite as Eastman landed many big shots to his chin. Kimmons hit Eastman with some bombs as well. The fighters went toe to toe many times with Kimmons landing the better shots during many of their scuffles and proving that he is one of the toughest fighters in the world. Result: Eastman by Unanimous Decision

2. Chris Guillen (35-7) vs. Wes “The Project” Sims (19-10-1) – This fight for the IFO Heavyweight Championship was a rematch of the fighters’ match on May 11, 2007 at the Art of War 2. In that three-round fight, Guillen went in as a heavy underdog to former UFC fighter Sims, yet he was able to neutralize the 6’10” Sims’ reach advantage by taking the fight to the mat. In the Art of War 2 fight, Guillen won a three-round decision. Guillen and Sims went at it again in this rematch, this time with a title on the line. Guillen proved that the first fight wasn’t a fluke as he was again able to beat Sims, this time by wearing down Sims as the exhausted Sims was unable to continue after the second round. Guillen proved that he is a force to be reckoned with in the heavyweight division. Result: Guillen by TKO (Corner Stoppage)

3. Eric Payne (21-6) vs. Brandon Shelton (15-2) – This fight for the IFO Featherweight Championship pitted two fighters, both incredible grapplers, against each other in a matchup that was thrilling from start to finish. Payne’s amazing jiu-jitsu skills were on display against Shelton and his nearly unmatched wrestling skills as evidenced by his 197-3 high school wrestling record. Payne and Shelton put on one of the most exciting displays of technical expertise as the crowd was on the edge of their seats as the two fighters fought most of the fight on the ground. Although Shelton was able to throw Payne with two perfectly executed judo throws, Payne eventually got the upper hand and forced Shelton to submit. The crowd applauded them as both fighters earned the respect of the audience. Result: Payne by Submission.

About Mixed Martial Arts: Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) encompasses many different styles of fighting in which a wide variety of fighting techniques are used, In addition to Steele Cage Promotions and the International Fighting Organization, other popular MMA organizations include the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), PRIDE Fighting Championships, Strikeforce, BodogFight, the International Fight League (IFL), EliteXC and World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC).”
