“To be in there with someone at that level was a great experience.”

Miami, Florida (USA): Shah Bobonis…it’s not a name easily forgotten. It’s unique. Yet, the fighter behind the name is so much more than an interesting moniker. He’s a rising, young 145-pounder that industry insiders are starting to recognize as a future force to be reckoned with.

 

Bobonis (11-7) possesses a unique background. Growing up in a military family, Shah moved around a lot. Starting in San Antonio, his family moved to Puerto Rico and then to Florida, where he was basically raised in Miami. A wrestler in junior high and high school, he was a star athlete. Shah went on to play minor league baseball. After his baseball career ended, he took up amateur boxing to stay in shape. A chance meeting with current Strikeforce lightweight contender Jorge Masvidal led to Shah being introduced to MMA. After falling in love with the sport, he began training in earnest, and made his pro debut in 2007.

 

A two-time title-holder in Mexico’s Combate Extremo (C.E.), Shah is the current C.E. Featherweight Champion. And he’s very confident in his abilities.

 

“I’m the new generation of fighter,” he explains. “I didn’t grow up wrestling all my life, and I wasn’t born in a gi. I love to fight, and I’ve learned to be proficient in every area of the game. Even if a guy comes in as a world champion kickboxer, I can beat anybody in the world at 135 or 145 lbs,” he confidently concludes.

 

 

Represented by former FIFA player agent and current C.E. CEO Michael Shoffner, doors are beginning to open for the well-rounded talent. Shah was recently asked to go to San Diego to help prepare UFC Bantamweight Champion Dominick Cruz for this weekend’s title bout with Urijah Faber. It was quite an experience for the young fighter.

 

“I was with him four weeks as one of his chief sparring partners,” said Bobonis. “It was a great experience. Dominick is a really well-rounded fighter. To be in there with someone at that level was a great experience. To see that caliber of fighter, to be exposed to it…you don’t get that every day. Once you train with someone that good, it gives you a level of confidence because you know going into a fight that you’re not going to see someone better than that. It helps your confidence.”

 

Last year, Shah was scheduled to make his Bellator debut. However, an injury prevented that. Now, he’s looking to string together a few wins and grab that first fight with the promotion.

 

“The UFC is great, but I think sometimes title shots and main events come about solely based on the marketability of the fight. I love how Bellator does things. You have to fight everybody. And I just want to fight the best, regardless.”

 

In his next bout, Shah will defend his Combate Extremo 145-pound belt in September. Look for more information on that fight in the coming months.

 

Combate Extremo is México’s longest running professional mixed martial arts promotion.  The promotion was instrumental in the growth and regulation of MMA in México by establishing the only federally appointed commission in the country – COMEXAM (Comision Mexicana de Artes Marciales Mixtas) and making it the first promotion in México to adopt the MMA Unified Rules and requiring other promoters to meet minimum regulatory standards.

 

To date, C.E. has promoted over 100 professional mixed martial arts events in México and internationally, running nine events in the 2010 season alone, along with another twelve scheduled for 2011. to Handle International TV and Digital Distribution

HBO Boxing After Dark Event To Be Held At HP Pavilion In San Jose, Calif

 

SAN JOSE, July 7 – After co-headlining an explosive pay-per-view card in April, two of boxing’s toughest fighters will collide in what is sure to be a “Fight of the Year” caliber fight when WBA Interim Super Lightweight World Champion Marcos “Chino” Maidana meets WBA/WBO Interim Lightweight World Champion Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero on Saturday, August 27 at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif for Maidana’s title.  Maidana has proven to be one of the toughest fighters to ever emerge from Argentina and will take on anyone, anywhere, any time, which is why he will travel to Northern California to take on Three-Division World Champion Guerrero in his backyard.  The explosive showdown between Maidana and Guerrero will headline the HBO Boxing After Dark broadcast and promises to be a classic battle.

Berg names new wrestling coach in Ned Shuck!

Tiffin, Ohio – June 22, 2011 –

Ned Shuck knows about championships. Augsburg College, where Shuck has been an assistant the past two years, won the Division III national championship in 2010. As a collegiate wrestler for the University of Iowa, one of the nation’s premiere programs, Shuck was a three-time Academic All Big Ten performer and four-year letter winner.
Shuck will bring his experience as a wrestler, coach and teacher to Heidelberg University as its next head wrestling coach beginning Aug. 1. In announcing Shuck’s hiring, Athletic Director Matt Palm said he will bring “a great deal of wrestling experience to the Heidelberg program.”

“We are excited that he will ensure our student-athletes are successful in the classroom, in the community and on the wrestling mats,” Palm said.

Shuck’s passion for the sport is undeniable. Coupled with his record at Iowa and Augsburg, his desire to mentor young men of character is an ideal pairing at Heidelberg, where wrestling has been one of the most successful athletic programs in recent years.

“After meeting and talking to Matt (Palm), Jason Miller (former head coach and associate AD) and Coach (Joe) Hada and Coach (Zach) Mizer, I knew Heidelberg was a great fit for me, personally, professionally and for my family,” Shuck said.

After graduating from Iowa in 2005, Shuck served as co-head high school wrestling coach at Chaska High School in Chaska, Minn. He participated in the USA National Coaches Certification Program from 2008-09 and was the head Minnesota Storm Freestyle Cadet coach, where he trained athletes for national teams. He joined the Augsburg wrestling staff in 2009, coaching two NCAA Division III finalists. At Augsburg, Shuck coached five All-Americans, four finalists and one national champion at Augsburg in 2011 – a year after the college won the Division III national championship. In 2010, he created the Augsburg Wrestling Academy. Additionally, he is a middle school special education teacher and is completing his master’s degree at the University of St. Thomas in Minneapolis.

Although competing on the big stage of Division I in college, Shuck likes the Division III atmosphere at Heidelberg and the Ohio Athletic Conference. “It’s appealing because of the intimacy of getting to know the kids on the team. Feeling like a family at a place like Heidelberg is easier to do,” he said. “Division III does a great job with promoting the sport as well.”

Already, Shuck has wasted little time getting to know his team. He has begun making phone calls to returning team members. “I’m really excited to get going as soon as possible. I’m excited to meet the guys and find out what I can do for them now. There’s a lot that goes into working with young men.”

Part of that work will be continuing to promote a positive attitude about community service. “This is an opportunity for us, not an obligation,” he said. “We want to get out there and give back, and show the community what Heidelberg wrestling is all about.”

To be sure, Heidelberg wrestling is about winning – with an emphasis on academic success. The Berg won the regular OAC title three times in the past six years and five of the last six OAC tournament championships.

A new cooperative effort was announced at a State of the Wrestling Forum that was held at National Wrestling Hall of Fame in Stillwater, Okla. on June 7. The Three leading organizations dedicated to the sport of wrestling – USA Wrestling, the National Wrestling Coaches Association and the National Wrestling Hall of Fame & Museum – agreed to initiate a national “Wrestling Alliance.”

We introduced it there, heard some words from the panel members and on this weeks show we’ll continue that .

Participating were Rich Bender, Executive Director of USA Wrestling, Mike Moyer, Executive Director of the National Wrestling Coaches Association and Lee Roy Smith, Executive Director of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum.

The mission of the Alliance is to protect, promote, and strengthen wrestling in the United States, with particular focus on high school and collegiate wrestling opportunities for young men and women.

Each organization will continue to function independently, with its own mission, vision and strategic plan, and will fulfill its specialized responsibilities within the sport.

The organizations in the Wrestling Alliance recognize the value of collaboration in the promotion and development of the sport, as well as the importance of communication with broad constituencies of wrestling participants, including athletes, coaches, volunteers, and fans.

Working together, the sport will benefit from the collective vision, dedication, and leadership of the organizations.

High school and collegiate wrestling plays an integral role in the success of the sport. For that reason, the three organizations have dedicated their initial cooperative efforts in this area.

Additional organizations who share the common visions and commitment may be invited to participate in the Wrestling Alliance, and the scope of its interests may expand accordingly.

The efforts of the Wrestling Alliance are focused on sport development and promotion, with full recognition that there are many organizations that have provided great support to the sport for a long time, and with full intent to encourage their continued participation. Not sure what all that means but surely we’ll ask the question.
