Cage Fury Fighting Championships this weekend at Resorts

Cage Fury Fighting Championships (CFFC) is back with its second installment under Hoss Promotions. Entitled “No Mercy”, CFFC 7 will bring another night of action packed mixed martial arts action to the Resorts Hotel and Casinoon Saturday, April 16, 2011.  Headlining the show will beUFC and IFC Veteran, Andre Gusmao, make his middleweight debut against undefeated phenom, Tim “the South Jersey Strangler” Williams.  Gusmao, who is primarily known for his striking ability, has three wins by TKO and two by submission under the Team Renzo Gracie banner.   His opponent enters the bout with an undefeated record of 5-0 with four of the victories coming by submission. Judges get the night off when Williams fights as he has stopped all of his opponents before the final bell.   The winner of this bout will be one of the contenders for the CFFC Middleweight Title in June.

 

The Co-Main Event will feature two stud featherweight contestants in Spa City BJJ/Ricardo Almeida student, Eddie Fyvie taking on Kurt Pellegrino MMA practitioner, Lester Caslow.  Fyvie is a submission specialist while Caslow has the same amount of victories by submission or TKO.   Their careers are almost a mirror image of each other and both are coming off losses.  This is a do-or-die fight for these competitors and both will be eager to get back in the win column.

 

The main card will feature Olympic Alternate and Assistant Wrestling Coach at the University of Pennsylvania, Kyle Cerminara will make his long awaited MMA debut against scrappy veteran Ariel Sepulveda, who is coming off a submission victory in February of this year.  Also, the ageless wonder, Anthony Dagostino is coming back to face Bill Bontcue in a special local attraction bout.  Rounding out the main card will be rising lightweight star, Dave Church of Kurt Pellegrino MMA taking on Neil Johnson.  The preliminary card will feature the new stars of CFFC as Mtume Goodrum, James Funaro, Billy Dee Williams, Steve Perez, andRichard Ostrum will all be making their professional debuts.

Berto-Ortiz headlines “East-West Showdown” April 16 at MGM Grand at Foxwoods and Live on HBO’s World Championship Boxing

NEW YORK, NY (April 12, 2011) – World Boxing Council (WBC) # 5 rated “Vicious” Victor Ortiz plans to go full throttle in order to knockout WBC Welterweight World Champion and unbeaten star Andre Berto in their highly-anticipated 12-round “East-West Showdown” on April 16 at the MGM Grand Theater at Foxwoods in Mashantucket, Connecticut.

 

With training camp winding down and fight week here, Ortiz kept his comments short and to the point regarding his fight with Berto. Below are notes from Ortiz’s training camp in Oxnard, California:

24-year-old Ortiz (28-2-2, 22 KO’s), fighting out of Ventura, California, is hitting his fighting prime and has developed into one of the most popular fighters in boxing. The hard-punching southpaw holds victories over former World Champions Nate Campbell (UD10), Vivian Harris (KO3) and Carlos Maussa (KO1) as well as high profile opponents such as Antonio Diaz (TKO7), Mike Arnaoutis (TKO2) and Jeffrey Resto (TKO2). The former NABO/USBA title holder will look to capture his first world title by defeating Berto on April 16.

Interview with Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao

“I have something I want to say. I am not afraid of anyone. I am a fighter; I am not a business man; I’m a fighter. I hope everyone understands this and on May 7 in (Las) Vegas, Shane Mosley will know this,” barked a usually subdued Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao.

What Manny is referencing of course is his next assignment in the ring. He will put his WBO welterweight title on the line against the former multi-divisional world champion, “Sugar” Shane Mosley, at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas on May 7th.

In a departure from his usual PPV events, this title fight will broadcast live on SHOWTIME NETWORK PPV as opposed to HBO PPV, or as it should now be called, “the house that Manny built.”

“I understand Mosley said I don’t have defense at all. But this isn’t true,” said Pacquiao.

“I want you to write this, please. Tell everyone I do have defense I just rather fight. I don’t want to dance and run – I want to fight,” he said.

“Well that’s interesting because Shane (Mosley) told me that is how he classifies you as, a fighter, not a boxer,” I replied.

Boxing fans and critics alike are not hyped for this fight. As a matter of fact, the general consensus amongst the masses is that Mosley will get his wish and see the bright lights from his view on the center stage all-be-it from laying on his back looking up from the canvass.

“I hear people say this will be an easy fight for me, but I know myself it won’t be,” said Manny.

“People don’t understand that he has really fast hands and feet. They talk about his age (39), but he doesn’t fight like his age. He is a very good boxer and athlete. He can move alot. but I dont think that is what he will do.”

“Something people need to look at is the right hand of Mosley. He has been able to knock real good fighters out with his right hand.”

“We are concerned enough about his speed and power that we have worked on different techniques to try and counter his big right hand.”

“I see Shane fighting me. I said it before and I believe it now, boxing is about hitting and getting hit. It’s not about running. It’s about giving and taking hits and giving hits is something I do real well and I know that once we hit each other, we will stand and fight,” said Pacquiao.

“People write and say things all the time about this fight,. They say Shane is old and didn’t look good the last few times in his fights’, but I say, look at (Erik) Morales. he fought ( this past Saturday against Marcos Maidana) and I saw it. He did very good. Ring legends are born and they come out for the big fights when they aren’t feeling pressure to win because they are the underdog – they fight harder,” he said.

“Shane will be like Morales when we fight. I know I will be dealing with the vintage Shane Mosley, not the one that people talk about now.”

“I know that I have to be very fast and very strong against him. I will start fast and end fast, but I am not looking to knock out Mosley. I think that would be a mistake to train for that and to say these things because if I trained for a knock out against (Antonio) Margarito I believe that I probably would’ve lost.” He continued, “If I tried knocking out Margarito, then I would’ve thrown all my power and been too busy too early, but what if Margarito didnt fall/ then I would’ve been too tired to put up much of a fight later in the rounds and that is why I won’t look for the knock out against Mosley. He is just too dangerous and strong and big for me to focus on winning like that against him.”

Despite what Manny says, one must consider the last few fights Mosley has been involved in.

In his last outing, Mosley fought to a draw against a former reality television contestant (Sergio Mora) and prior to that, he was shut out by the undefeated, welterweight semi-retired Floyd “Money” ‘Mayweather in what many scribes thought would be a serious test for the Michigan phenom, but ended up being “easy work” for the often outspoken Mayweather.

So why Shane Mosley? Why not a rubbermatch with WBO/WBA light weight king, Juan Manuel Marquez? Marquez shares the public’s demand for a third fight with the Filipino bomber. In their two clashes against one another, Marquez got dropped three times in the first round only to rally back from an almost assured devastating stoppage to garner a draw against Pacquiao.

Then, in their highly anticipated rematch, Marquez would see himself lose a close decision to his rival. Ever since that last fight, Marquez has campaigned vigorously for a third stanza against his nemesis.

“Well, to answer your question, Shane only fights the best like I do. He is a legend. and I really want to fight Floyd Mayweather but it is obvious that he wants no part of me because he is ducking every way to fight me so that is why I am fighting Shane now,” said Pacquiao.

“I don’t pick my opponent. Freddie (Roach, Manny’s trainer) and Bob Arum (Manny’s promoter) show me fighters and then they tell me how much money I can make fighting each one. After that, they usually decide for me. So it is really up to them who I fight, not me.”

As Manny sets his sights on Mosley, I could not help but ask him what the future holds after May 7?

With the build, strength, and southpaw stance mirrored by amateur standout, Regis Prograis, Manny could easily slide back down to junior welterweight for the likes of WBO/WBC junior welterweight titlist Timothy Bradley or WBA junior welterweight champion Amir Khan in a super fight.

“I’m not thinking of Bradley and I would never fight Amir Khan because he and I are good friends and he will find his own way to superstardom without me. Amir is going to be the greatest fighter of his era. A fight between Amir and me will never happen,” said Manny.

“But I can say that I know I can make 135 pounds right now. I walk around weighing 142 when I’m not training so I can drop down to 135 and fight there.”

So does that mean fans can expect to see a much desired fight with Manny Pacquiao’s stalker, Juan Manuel Marquez?

“I can make 135 pounds. I know he is there. Who else is at 135 pounds?” he asked.

Along with shunning a fight with Bradley or Khan but teasing fight fans with a possible interest in Marquez, Pacquiao confirmed to this scribe his willingness to meet boxing’s newest star, Sergio Martinez.

“I will fight him; I am not afraid of Martinez. I will fight him, but we must meet at a catchweight around 150 (lbs). This would be a very good fight, but I have to protect myself too. I can not gain too much weight for this and my opponent can not be too big for me either.”

Manny Pacquiao, the congressman, fighter, humanitarian, and people’s champion.

How does he stay humble and at what price has he contemplated quitting, if ever?

Never quit and always dare to be great is his motto.

“Boxing has its ups and downs. I fight to be the best. The fight that I think of alot is the first fight I had with Marco Barrera in San Antonio. I was an underdog and I was fighting my first big fight in the U.S. and no one paid attention to me. After that fight, everyone knew me.”

“I want to be great. I don’t want to just try. I want and expect to be great in everything. I talk about putting on a good show for fans but its not just my fans. It’s all of boxing’s fans because I know they spend their money and deserve to be entertained. ”

“I do what I do for the people. Not just Manny Pacquiao fans but every fan of boxing. I win because they are in the ring with me.”

PUERTO RICO (April 12, 2011) – Former world champion Orlando “Siri” Salido arrived late Monday evening in Puerto Rico and held a Media Workout on Tuesday at the Wilfredo Gomez Gym in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, where he was welcome by two-time world championIvan “Iron Boy” Calderon.

Salido will challenge unbeaten World Boxing Organization (WBO) featherweight champion Juan Manuel “Juanma’’ Lopezthis Saturday, April 16 in the main event of SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING live on SHOWTIME® (10:30 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast).

Salido and his team, Jose Santos, Victor Barron and Armando Castro, met the media and worked out for one hour, hitting the mitts, speed bag and shadow boxing. Salido stated that he was almost on weight for the 126-pound clash at Ruben Rodriguez Coliseo in Bayamon, Puerto Rico

In the co-feature, undefeated Luis Cruz will now face former world title challenger Martin Honorio, of Mexico City, Mexico, in a 10-round super featherweight bout after Roman “Rocky” Martinez suffered a back injury while training and was forced to pull out of the fight.

Cruz (17-0, 14 KOs), of Philadelphia by way of Las Piedras, P.R., is ranked No. 11 by the IBF at 130 pounds and has won six in a row by knockout, including a TKO 2 over Wilfredo Acuna in his most recent start last Dec. 4, and 11 of his last 12 inside the distance. Cruz has gone the route only three times since turning professional in March 2007. The furthest he’s gone is 10 rounds.

A former world title challenger at 126 pounds, Honorio (29-5-1, 15 KOs) owns wins over previously undefeated prospectJohn Molina, junior featherweight contender Rogers Mtagwa, and former world champs Steven Luevano and Cristobal Cruz. Honorio challenged Robert Guerrero for the IBF featherweight world title in November, 2007, losing via a devastating one-punch knockout at 0:56 of the first round. Honorio has lost just once since moving up to 130 pounds.

Salido (34-11-2, 1 ND, 22 KOs), 30, of Ciudad Obregon, Mexico, is more dangerous than his record would indicate. In his last start, he scored a knockdown and went the distance against power-punching WBA featherweight champion Yuriorkis Gamboa on Sept. 11, 2010. The points loss came one start after he registered two knockdowns en route to winning a decision and the then-vacant IBF title over Cristobal Cruz.

The exciting, hard-hitting Lopez (30-0, 27 KOs), of San Juan, P.R., is a two-division world champion who’ll be making his third WBO title defense. The talented southpaw is coming off an excellent eighth-round TKO over Mexico’s boxing legend and future Hall of Famer, Rafael Marquez, in a tense give-and-take slugfest last Nov. 6 on SHOWTIME. Lopez, 27, has knocked out 90 percent of his opponents.

Below is what Salido had to say at Tuesday’s workout:

ON FIGHTING IN PUERTO RICO:

“I have everything to gain and nothing to lose, all the pressure is on him. He is the champion. He’s fighting at home and everyone expects him to win. Let’s see if he can deliver. I did not come all this way to lay down for him”

ON JUANMA LOPEZ:

“I do believe that he is the best featherweight in the world and a great champion, but he also likes to fight and that will be to my advantage. We both have power and will test each other all night”

ON FIGHTING FOR A WORLD TITLE AGAIN:

“This is a great opportunity for me. I worked very hard for nearly two and half months and just feel great. My confidence is sky high for this fight. I know this could be my last chance and I want to take advantage of it”

ON WHAT KIND OF FIGHT HE EXPECTS

“I know it will be a war and that it will be tough for both us. I know Juanma comes with everything in the first few rounds and I will have to be smart and stay focused at all times. I believe that the longer the fight goes it will be to my advantage. I know that he is not the same fighter in the end that he is in the beginning”

ON THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN GAMBOA AND LOPEZ:

“From fighting Gamboa and from what I seen of Lopez, I believe that Lopez is the more well-rounded boxer. Gamboa still fights like an amateur at times and he is very fast, but Juanma looks like he has more power. I guess I find out more on Saturday night”

ON THIS CAMP AND THE ONE FOR GAMBOA:

“I did not have a very good camp for the Gamboa fight because I went to Mexico City to train and I just never got comfortable. This time I trained in Nogales and Ciudad Obregon and feel a lot better about my preparation. That’s what I did for the Cristobal Cruz fight when I won the title and that’s what I should have done for the Gamboa fight”
