Vinny O’Brien returns to the ring April 9

Following his stellar performance in his professional debut, winning by TKO, welterweight prospect Vinny “The Lion” O’Brien will be returning to the ring April 9 as part of the undercard for the Tomasz Adamek and Kevin McBride heavyweight fight at the Prudential Center.

Tickets have recently been made available for the fight and due to the rising popularity of the top prospect, it is likely that they will sell out fast.

 

“Two weeks ago I went out and did everything Lou and I trained for,” said O’Brien.  “It felt great to win by TKO and give the fans a good show. Now it back to business and I have my focus on the April 9 fight.”

O’Brien is quickly becoming a fan favorite to New Jersey boxing fans.  In his debut he put on a performance that was reminiscent of a young Arturo Gatti.  O’Brien was relentless with his attack and wore down his opponent punch by punch until the fight was ended.

Having garnered much attention on both a national and local level leading up to his professional debut, O’Brien delivered to his fans and erased any questions marks skeptics may have had on his level of skill.

Miura’s Career Change Going Well for Him… Not So Well for His Opponents   Sometimes life throws you for a loop. Sometimes it judo throws you for a loop.   Popular Tokyo, Japan, native Hiromitsu Miura was a world-class judo specialist and 9-6 as an MMA fighter, he even challenged for the WEC World welterweight championship, when he realized his true calling was as a professional boxer.   As part of his martial arts training at the Teiken Gym in Japan, Miura says he started to learn boxing to improve his stand-up skills, but quickly found a passion for the sweet science.   He is now an undefeated (5-0, 3 KOs) light heavyweight and hasn’t been in a cage since.   29-year-old Miura will make his next appearance on the undercard of the March 25 ESPN2 Friday Night Fights broadcast from The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. Through a translator, Miura answered some questions during a break in training.   How have you and your family been affected by the tragic events that recently occurred in Japan?   No one in my immediate family was affected. However, my brother is in Sendai City as part of a rescue squad, helping with the aftermath of the disastrous events. I really want to give 100% and more in my next fight in Las Vegas for my people back home.   Are you going to stay just a boxer or are you returning to MMA?   No. I will stay as boxer and focus only on that.   Which sport is more difficult to train for?   Boxing is much more difficult because it is deeper and requires more technique throughout the sport.   Are you more nervous before a boxing fight or an MMA fight?   Both are the same. Well-educated challenger has eyes on Lima’s belt

One might not expect a heavy-handed brawler with a penchant for going toe-to-toe with his opponents to actually outthink an upcoming foe.

But if there was ever a prime example of this uncanny ability, it just may very well belong to Terry Martin, making him an even more “Dangerous” threat to current MFC welterweight champ Douglas “The Phenom” Lima.

Martin (21-8) will challenge Lima (17-4) for the belt at MFC 29: Conquer taking place on Friday, April 8 at The Colosseum at Caesars Windsor. The co-main event, which will put a stamp on the live televised card on HDNet Fights, pits Martin’s power-punching against Lima’s stylish jiu-jitsu. Martin, though, has a unique twist to his game planning.

The Chicago native happens to be one of the most-educated fighters in all of mixed martial arts, and fittingly, it is an impressive background in psychology.

“I guess I’m really starting to use this big ol’ head now,” laughed Martin. “I’m starting to put my knowledge to good use.”

With a Bachelor’s degree in science from Northern Illinois University already in his back pocket, Martin went on to earn to a Master’s degree and is now pursuing his PHD in psychology at Concordia University in Oak Park, Illinois. Yet for all his book smarts and being a likely victor in a battle of wits with any opponent, it’s a pure fighter’s approach that Martin brings to the ring.

“There’s a whole lot of stuff I can take from school and use in a fight, and it does help me at the start when it comes to putting everything together, but I think like a fighter,” explained Martin, whose most notable career wins have come against Chael Sonnen, Jorge Rivera and Ivan Salaverry.

“It’s hard to predict how things go in a fight. A lot of things can happen. I’ve gone at it with a lot of top people and I just go in there and do what I do.”

While accustomed to researching information for term papers and presenting his findings for a thesis, Martin hasn’t done any homework when it comes to what Lima will bring to their title fight. No late-night study sessions, no cramming at the last minute. Just take the test – pass or fail.

“I don’t want to seem cocky. I was told he’s tough but I don’t care to watch anything about him,” said the 30-year-old, who enters the showdown with Lima riding a three-fight winning streak.

“My training stays the same – very few modifications. I have my ‘Terry Martin’ style and I’ll be ready. My coaches will have studied him, but I’m not going to pay any attention to him at all.”

What did catch Martin’s attention, however, was a comment from Lima that the reigning champ was eager to face a well-regarded striker for the opportunity to showcase his own striking skills. Twelve of Martin’s 21 career wins have come by way of knockout, including his stoppage of Rivera in a bout that lasted all of 14 seconds.

“Maybe he’s just trying to build things up. Everyone can talk crazy till they get cracked,” Martin responded.

“He can talk all he wants … and then he’s going to get cracked and all that stuff he said becomes irrelevant.”

Fighting at Home a Rare Treat For Galvan

“Before a fight I have nothing to say to these younger guys I fight. But afterward, if they want to hear about my experiences, I’m fine with that. I’ll tell them what I’ve learned, no problem.”   You’d think he’d have taken “Road Warrior” for a nickname, given the path his boxing career has taken, but Hammond, Indiana, welterweight veteran Ruben “Modern Day Warrior”Galvan (27-15-4, 10 KOs) is happy with his ring name and everything else about his boxing career.   “I never expected to be where I’m at today. Am I world champ? No. But I feel like a champ. I’ve been a pro fighter for 15 years. I’m not the best boxer, but my chin has gotten me through. Even though I’m always on the road and always in the opposite corner, I’m grateful and I wouldn’t have it any other way. It’s made me who I am today. I love it.”   Galvan will fight at home and on the left side of the bout sheet for the first time since 2006 when he enters the ring against Ohio’s Gabriel Morris at the Hitz Boxing Fight Night event on Saturday, April 9, at his former place of work, the Horseshoe Casino in Hammond, Indiana.   Galvan was employed at the Horseshoe for years, serving as valet supervisor, security guard and security trainer.   “I feel great. It’s been a while since I fought here at home, so I’m excited about it. I’m more nervous about fighting at the Horseshoe Casino. I worked there for so long. Going back there to fight is exciting for me.”   Fearless and extremely durable, Galvan is that valuable commodity in boxing seldom praised for his importance to the sport. He is a brave warrior who will fight anyone in their hometown and, if the opponent is above a club level, usually lose well, even against the world’s best.   “I always put on a great show, no matter where I go,” he says proudly. “And even if they boo me before the fight, they all come up to me and shake my hand afterward and say ‘You’re so tough. You have so much heart.’ I wish the fans were the ones in charge of paying me! I show up to fight and entertain. It’s not the WWE, but I try to bring the crowd into it. I love it. I really do. I like to fight dirty and do things to get the crowd riled up. It gets in my opponent’s head too, sometimes.”   While Galvan says he knows little about Morris, he’s not very concerned. “There’s not a style I haven’t seen. All I care about is if he’s southpaw, I want to know. If he’s orthodox, there’s nothing I haven’t seen. I just adjust to it and do my thing.”   In his long career, Galvan has “done his thing” against a long list of up-and-coming contenders and world champions and incurred surprisingly little injury for his all-action style. “Zab Judah is probably the biggest name I’ve fought, but as far as the best fighter I have fought technically, I would have to go with (former world champions) Paul Spadafora or Jorge Paez as the two best. And through it all, all I’ve ever gotten was eight stitches and two broken hands. That’s the worst I’ve ever gotten hurt. I feel fine.”   Still, even the toughest men fighters know that eventually time will tick away until it’s time to hang them up. “It’s hard to say when I’ll quit. I wanted to retire a year or two ago, but my phone keeps ringing and the money is great. I don’t want to push it though. Maybe this year will be my last. It’s hard when someone calls you and offers you big money. It’s like what do you do? Especially something I love to do. The way the economy is right now, I’ll take it. World Light Heavyweight Champion Beibut Shumenov Severs Ties With Goossen Tutor Promotions

LAS VEGAS (March 17, 2011) – World Boxing Association/International Boxing Association Light Heavyweight Champion Beibut Shumenov filed a lawsuit today (Thursday, March 17, 2011) against Goossen Tutor Promotions. The lawsuit asks the Nevada court to confirm that a promotional agreement between Shumenov and Goossen Tutor is terminated.

 

Shumenov terminated his agreement with Goossen Tutor Promotions in January of this year.

 

Shumenov alleges that Goossen Tutor Promotions violated its duties under the contract in different ways. The lawsuit charges breach of contract, breach of fiduciary duty, fraud and deceptive trade practices and seeks a judicial confirmation that the agreement is terminated. Shumenov seeks unspecified damages, including punitive damages

 

Beibut is anxious to continue on his mission to unify the world light heavyweight titles and he will move forward through his promotion company, KZ Event Productions, Inc.

 

Shumenov (11-1, 7 KOs), the 2004 Kazakhstan Olympian, has been on an unprecedented, accelerated pace since his pro debut only three years ago, defeating two world champions in his first eight bouts, Montell Griffin and Byron Mitchell. A year ago, Shumenov established the mark for fewest pro fights needed to capture a major world light heavyweight title, defeating defending champion Gabriel Campillo by 12-round decision for the WBA crown in his 10^th bout, breaking the record of 15 set by Jeff “Hit Man” Harding in 1989.

 

Shumenov was supposed to fight World Boxing Organization 175-pound titlist Juergen Braehmer in a Unification title fight January 8 in Shymkent, Kazakhstan, however, Braehmer unexpectedly pulled-out of the match the week of the fight claiming gastrointestinal problems.

 

Shumenov registered a victory by sixth-round knockout against Braehmer’s replacement, Joppy, who became the fourth world champion Beibut has defeated during his relative young pro career.
