NEW YORK, NY (Feb 17, 2011) – The “East-West Showdown,” featuring World Boxing Council (“WBC”) Welterweight World Champion Andre Berto and WBC #5 rated challenger “Vicious” Victor Ortiz, was held yesterday at The Palm West Restaurant in New York City. The two featured fighters and representatives from their respective camps were in attendance at yesterday’s event.

“East-West Showdown: Berto vs. Ortiz” is presented by DiBella Entertainment, in association with Golden Boy Promotions. The bout will be televised live on HBO’s World Championship Boxing starting at 9:45 PM/ET 6:45 PM/PT. The broadcast kicks off with Amir “King” Khan (24-1, 17 KOs) defending his WBA Super Lightweight World Title against Paul “Dudley” McCloskey (22-0, 12 KOs) from the M.E.N. Arena in Manchester, England.

Modern-Day Rocky Peter Manfredo, Jr. Dreamin’ about Martinez title shot at home

PROVIDENCE (March 17, 2011) – Middleweight contender Peter “The Pride of Providence” Manfredo, Jr. had a ringside seat in MGM Grand Theater at Foxwoods last Saturday night to witness the superlative performance turned in by WBC Emeritus and The Ring 160-pound champion Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez, who dropped previously unbeaten WBO junior welterweight titlist Sergiy “Razor” Dzinziruk five times en route to a major statement-victory by eighth-round knockout.

 

Manfredo (37-6, 20 KOs), arguably the leading American middleweight challenger, is riding a six-fight win streak since losing to super middleweight Saki Bika in 2008. The  star of The Contender, Season One is currently rated No. 7 by the IBF and No. 9 by the WBC.

 

Now working fulltime as a laborer at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center in Providence, ironically, where he headlined four major shows, Manfredo dreams of fighting Martinez there this summer. The popular Italian-American boxer is like a modern-day Rocky with a twist: Peter’s not breaking legs but he is sweeping floors to provide for his family.

 

“Martinez is one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world, right up there with Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather,” Manfredo said. “Imagine me fighting him at The Dunk where I headlined shows and now work? That would be straight out of Hollywood! I know fight fans in Providence would give him a royal welcome. He would definitely be a tough fight for me and I’d be an underdog, but I’ve put myself in a challenger’s position the past two years, and I want a shot at the best. Getting a fight against Martinez is what fighters dream about, especially at home, and I’ve worked hard the past two years to get to this point. Hey, this is boxing and nothing’s written in stone; it only takes one shot to change the world. That’s boxing, and maybe I land an old Micky Ward shot to the body, and my life would be changed.

 

“Opportunities to fight somebody like Martinez don’t come around every day. Now is the right time for me. I’d be honored to get in the ring to fight him. I know I can compete with him. Like (Vinny) Paz says, ‘Fight or die.’ Styles make fights and this would be a very entertaining match-up. I’m a classic boxer-puncher and he’s a very fast, awkward fighter who seems to have found his power in the last few fights. Sergio keeps his hands down and bobs his head. Boxers aren’t taught to do that but he can because he’s so good. Martinez reminds me of Roy Jones. I’ve proven myself and want to get it on with Martinez.”

 

Manfredo has the proper pedigree, as an amateur and pro, in addition to possibly having a strength advantage versus Martinez, who has moved-up from junior middleweight, while Manfredo dropped down from 168. Three of Manfredo’s six career losses have been against much larger super middleweights – Joe Calzaghe in their WBO title fight, former world champ Jeff Lacy, and Bika.

 

During his 10 ½ year career, Manfredo has defeated world champion Frankie Randall, The Contender 2 winner Grady Brewer, previously unbeaten prospect Sherwin Davis, world title challengers Scott Pemberton and Alfonso Gomez, and present WBA No. 6 rated light heavyweight Joey Spina.

 

“I have valuable experience against great champions like Martinez,” Manfredo added. “I went through the whole thing with Calzaghe and learned a valuable lesson. I won’t make those mistakes again. I’m experienced fighting super middleweights, who were too big for me, but I’m a real middleweight. HARTFORD (Mar. 17, 2011) – Tradition returns to Hartford on Saturday night, April 9 when Hard Hittin’ Promotions (“HHP”) presents “The Willie Pep Boxing Classic,” featuring local heavyweightTony “TNT” Grano, as well as a Hartford bragging rights battle between veterans Israel “Pito”Cardona and Luis Maysonet, at the Connecticut Convention Center in Hartford.

 

“We believe Connecticut has and is producing some great fighters, as good as any state, and we want to showcase them right here at home,” HHP director of boxing Craig Salamone said. “Boxing has a rich tradition in Hartford, starting with legendary Willie Pep and continuing to Marlon Starling and 1996 U.S. Olympian Lawrence Clay-Bey. Our goal is to bring boxing shows back every few months, based at the beautiful Connecticut Convention Center, and grow from there. Everybody is excited about the April 9^th show with the return of one of New England’s most popular fighters, Tony Grano, along with the long anticipated grudge match between Cardona and Maysonet, and a group of Connecticut’s most promising prospects and hometown favorites.”

 

Grano (17-2-1, 13 KOs), fighting out of nearby Hebron, finds himself in a crossroads fight against veteran “Diamond” Dominque Alexander. The 8-round main event represents retribution of sorts for the WBF All-Americas heavyweight champion and 2005 U.S. Nationals winner, who suffered a knockout for the first time in his last fight to Nicolai Firtha in June. Grano’s statement win to date was a dramatic stoppage of previously unbeaten Travis Kauffman (18-0) on ShoBox.

 

Alexander has been in the ring with some of the best including former WBO heavyweight champion Shannon Briggs and current WBO cruiserweight titlist Krzysztof Wlodarczyk, in addition to world heavyweight title challengers Kali Meehan and Fres Oquendo, and Odlanier Solis who challenges WBC heavyweight king Vitali Klitschko this Saturday.

 

The 8-round co-feature is an interesting match-of two of Hartford’s all-time best fighters in a 10 round junior middleweight bout. Cardona (36-10, 28 KOs) is a former USBA and NABF lightweight champion who went the distance with undefeated IBF champion Paul Spadafora in 1999. “Pito” holds victories against Jeff Mayweather, Ivan Robinson, Sam Girard and Golden Johnson.

 

Maysonet (32-11, 25 KOs), who fought for the WBU welterweight crown in 1995, has fought standouts Thomas Damgaard, Hector Camacho, Robinson, and Louis Veader.

 

The undercard is stacked with some of the best young fighters in New England, including Meriden (CT) by way of Mexico bantamweight Danny Aquino (5-1, 1 KO) vs. James Owens (4-2, 2 KOs), Puerto Rican junior welterweight prospect – training in New Haven – Javier “El Chino” Flores (5-0, 4 KOs) vs. game Norwalk (CT) veteran Shakha Moore (10-15-3, 2 KOs), and promising New Haven featherweight and former amateur standout, Luis Rosa (5-0, 2 KOs) vs. Tommy Attencio (4-6, 2 KOs), all in 6-round bouts. Undefeated East Hartford Joseph “Chip” Perez (5-0, 2 KOs) facesCharles Vanderveer (1-1, 1 KO) in a 4-rounder.

 

Also scheduled to fight on the undercard are a pair of Middletown (CT) favorites, light heavyweightDoug Cartelli (1-0) and pro-debuting junior middleweight Willie Picard. They’ll be facing theWilliams brothers, respectively, Jaquan (pro debut) and Charles (0-1), from North Carolina. Undefeated Philadelphia junior lightweight Frank Trader (7-0, 2 KOs) meets an opponent to be determined in a 4-round clash. All fights and fighters are subject to change.

Willie Pep: Born Gugloermo Papaleo in 1922 in Middletown, CT. He was a 2-time world champion who retired in 1966 after a 26 year professional career with an amazing 229-11-1 (65 KOs) record. In 1990, Pep was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota, New York. He died November 23, 2006 at the age of 84.

 

DEGALE AND GROVES PERFORM PRIZEFIGHTER DRAW

Super-Middleweight stars handle the fate of Wednesday’s Liverpool line-up

James DeGale and George Groves performed the draw for Prizefighter Super-Middleweights II at Liverpool Olympia on March 23 onRingside on Sky Sports today (March 17).

The super-middleweight pair announced their clash in May today and joined Matchroom Sport’s Eddie Hearn on the show to decide the fate of the eight fighters in the 17^th edition of the eight-man, one night tournaments, live on Sky Sports.

Patrick J Maxwell kicks off the night against Scotsman Kenny Anderson and the winner of that bout between will face either Liverpool’s Joe Ainscough or tough Sheffield fighter Wayne Reed. The bottom half of the draw sees former World Champion Robin Reid fight unbeaten Welsh prospect Tobias Webb – Reid could potentially face fellow Liverpudlian Carl Dilks who faces Leicester boxer Jahmaine Smyle in the fourth quarter-final.
