Historic First Sanctioned MMA Event Set To Be Held In Maine

Taunton, Massachusetts – February 14, 2011 – Cage Fighting Xtreme (CFX) is both proud, and excited to announce a co‐promotion with UFC veteran Marcus “The Irish Hand Grenade” Davis’ of TEAM IRISH , they will be holding the first ever sanctioned MMA event in the State of Maine! The number of states left, yet to regulate and hold sanctioned MMA events, is falling like the mercury in a New England thermometer. As a result, it is a real rarity to host the first ever sanctioned MMA event in a state.

A real rarity is however, exactly what CFX is, and always has been! CFX’s Promoter is Linda Shields. Yes, just as her name sounds, she is a female promoter. In fact, Linda was the first female promoter to hold an MMA show in Massachusetts, when she kicked off CFX in January of 2009. The sport was legal, but not regulated then at the time of CFX’s first show. Next, she also became the first female promoter in the State of New Hampshire, when she brought CFX there in April of 2009. Later she became the first female promoter recognized by Massachusetts when they began regulating MMA (March 2010), with her CFX MMA show in May of 2010. Continuing the trend, Linda is now set to bring CFX to Portland, Maine on April 30, 2011, along with Marcus Davis of TEAM IRISH. What’s the big deal there, you might ask? We’re glad you asked! Not only will she be the first female promoter to hold a sanctioned MMA event in Maine, but the first promotion EVER to hold a sanctioned MMA event in Maine! This is truly an historic event, for MMA in general, the State of Maine, CFX, TEAM IRISH, and of course for Linda Shields.

This historic event might never have happened without the tireless efforts of Marcus Davis, a UFC veteran, and native of Bangor, Maine. Besides becoming a UFC fan favorite, and fighting all over the world, Marcus also fought to get MMA legalized in Maine. As early as 2004, he attempted to convince the state government to allow him to hold MMA fights. While the time was not yet right, Marcus hung in there and over the years since, has addressed lawmakers and testified before public hearings in Augusta, Maine about the safety, benefit to the state, and popularity of MMA. Finally, after all of Marcus Davis’ efforts on behalf of the sport in Maine, it is fitting that he and his Team Irish come together with CFX to bring MMA home to Maine!

On his association with Linda Shields and CFX, Marcus Davis had this to say, “I’m very excited to have our company be part of the first MMA event in Maine. Apple Valley, CA (USA): Gladiator Challenge, California’s top regional fight promotion, will proudly present its next event, “Legends Collide 2,” this Sunday, February 20th, live at the Soboba Casino in San Jacinto, California. This electrifying fight card will pit two true MMA pioneers against one another, as former UFC Champion Dan “The Beast” Severn will face fellow legend Cal Worsham in a rematch years in the making. In addition, the card will feature two title fights, as well as a bout featuring UFC/Strikeforce veteran James “The Sandman” Irvin.

Dan Severn and Cal Worsham first faced off at “Legends Collide” on January 27th, 2005. A back-and-forth battle ensued that went into the third round. Both fighters had their moments. With about a minute and a half left in the fight, Severn gained the victory via TKO (doctor’s stoppage). Since that time, Worsham has competed four times, winning three of those matches. He last competed in 2007. Meanwhile, since his tilt with Worsham, Severn has stepped into the cage an astounding thirty-six times, winning thirty-one of those battles. Now these two will grace the Gladiator Challenge cage to face one another once again, as the main event of “Legends Collide 2” will feature this anticipated rematch. Revenge will be on the mind of Worsham, while Severn will look to make it two straight against his foe.

James “The Sandman” Irvin, who holds a 5-0-0-1 record in Gladiator Challenge, is one of the most exciting fighters in all of mixed martial arts. An incredible striker who embodies the “kill or be killed” mentality that Gladiator Challenge fighters showcase on a regular basis, Irvin got his fighting start with Tedd Williams back in 2003. He won the GC Light Heavyweight Championship in his fourth fight. His success with the promotion helped launch him into national shows, and eventually the UFC. There, he garnered a reputation for regularly being showcased on highlight reels. His knockouts of Terry Martin, Hector Martinez, and Houston Alexander have become staples of highlight replays the world over. At “Legends Collide 2,” Irvin will face Melvin Costa, who possesses a 7-1 record with all seven victories coming via stoppage.

For IBF #1 Title Eliminator and USBA Light Heavyweight Title

Woodland Hills, California (February 14, 2011) – Art of Boxing Promotions in association with Bash Boxing and Lights Out Promotions have added another USBA title bout to the third installment of WARNER CENTER WAR on Friday, March 4, 2011.

In the co-main event, Otis Griffin (23-6-2, 9 KOs), ranked #7 by the IBF, puts his USBA light-heavyweight title on the line against Yusaf Mack (28-3-2, 17 KOs), who is ranked #8 in. This is a world title elimination bout with the winner becoming the mandatory challenger to IBF light-heavyweight champion, Tavoris Cloud.

Griffin, from Sacramento, California, is a former NABO champion and the winner of Oscar De La Hoya’s reality show, “The Next Great Champ”. Ricky Boylan Set For Double Action In Coming Month

Carshalton’s ‘Pretty’ Ricky Boylan has a busy month ahead of him, with two fights scheduled just a few weeks apart, as he prepares to establish his credentials as one of the future stars of the British Lightweight division.

Back in December the former London ABA finalist impressed on his professional debut, against Birmingham’s Sid Razak at the excellent ‘Judgement Day’ event.

It was hard to think that Boylan was debuting, as his performance was exceptionally slick and mature in it’s approach. Round after round Razak was having to cover up as Boylan peppered him with solid combinations to the head and body.

In the final round ‘Pretty Ricky’ changed tactics and boxed on the back foot but still Razak was unable to get any semblance of control due to Boylan’s impressive movement and powerful combinations. Surprisingly the referee deemed the fight as a 59-56 points win for ‘Pretty’ Ricky and not the clear shut out it was.

Boylan’s scintillating performance not just grabbed the headlines but also the attention of promoters Miranda Carter and Steve Goodwin, who were quick to invite him to fight on their upcoming shows.

The first of these events is this coming weekend, when 22 year old Boylan faces the experienced Welsh banger Craig Dyer, at the Miranda Carter promoted ‘The Force of Destiny’ event at York Hall in Bethnal Green, London, on Sunday 20th February 2011.

Just four weeks later, on Saturday 19th March, Boylan will make the trek from his Surrey home to the Goresbrook Leisure Centre in Dagenham, Essex, where he will go against the even more experienced Kristian Laight at the Steve Goodwin promoted ‘Essex Eruption’ event.

Following a training session at Johnny Eames’ Ultrachem TKO Boxing Gym in Canning Town, London, ‘Pretty’ Ricky took a few moments out to talk a little about his upcoming fights. “Yeah I’ll be out twice in the next month, It’s good, I want to be busy so I’m really pleased about this.

I said to Johnny (Eames) I just want to be busy this year so it’s good to get two within the month. It’s all good.

On the 20th February I’m fighting Craig Dyer on Miranda Carter’s show at York Hall. His record aint the best but he’s tough, comes forward and he’s strong. I’ve got to stick to my boxing.

Then I’m boxing on the 19th March as well on a Steve Goodwin show in Dagenham. I’ll be against Kristian Laight.

I made a few mistakes on my debut, I was watching a few things. I’ve got to sometimes sit back and look for the opportunity before I throw my shots, instead of just throwing them for the sake of throwing them.

But, I’ve just had the one pro fight so I’m still learning.

I’ll be three and 0 by the end of March hopefully.”

The Californians, Travers, Apple and Douglas will be making their second starts on a STRIKEFORCE Challengers card while the Texans, Prater and Larson will be making their debuts for the San Jose, Calif.-based MMA promotion. Gonzalez will be fighting for STRIKEFORCE for a second time.

A winner in seven of his last eight, the 5-foot-10, 27-year-old Travers is a terrific wrestler who unanimously outpointed Rocky Johnson on Aug. 27, 2010. Travers’ six-fight winning streak was snapped in his outing before last by “Bam Bam’’ Healy, who won a decision during a Challengers event May 21, 2010, in Portland, Ore., on SHOWTIME. Travers’ most noteworthy triumph was a unanimous decision over former UFC and IFL vet John Gunderson in May ‘09.

Prater is an eight-year pro and former WEC title challenger. The 6-foot, 29-year-old, who’ll be looking to regain his winning ways in this one, was victorious in his initial 10 starts after turning pro in November ‘02. Last Sept. 10, Prater fought three times during a single-night tournament.

Apple is a skilled wrestler who is gigantic for the division. This will be the 6-footer’s first assignment since a second-round TKO loss (punches) to Bobby Voelker on STRIKEFORCE Challengers on Nov. 20, 2009, on SHOWTIME. In his outing before last, Apple submitted then-highly touted Matt Makowski on Sept. 26, 2008.

Larson, a product of Relson Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Austin, has won by first-round submission in all but one of his victories. A pro since Feb. 10, 2006, he split his two outings in 2010, winning by first-round submission (rear-naked choke) over Anthony Macias on Feb. 27, and losing by an identical result to Derrick Hantz in his last fight on Aug. 20.

Douglas, a member of Cesar Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, is a 5-foot-11 non-stop action fighter who has won five out of six, including a second-round TKO (punches) over Dominic Clark in a non-televised match on a STRIKEFORCE Challengers event last Oct. 22 in Fresno, Calif.

Douglas’ most memorable win came against Mongkhon Wiwasuk, aka Malaipet, a Lumpinee Stadium Muay Thai champ in Thailand and an extremely dangerous striker, on Sept. 26, 2008, at Santa Ynez, Calif. He rallied to triumph by third-round TKO (punches) in a brawl that featured numerous changes in momentum, exceeded all expectations and, for sheer excitement, was as good as it gets.

Gonzalez is vastly more experienced than Douglas and has fought, among others, former STRIKEFORCE World Lightweight Champion Josh Thomson (June 26, 2007, on the undercard of Shamrock-Baroni in San Jose) and Yves Edwards on July 26, 2008.

A winner by unanimous decision over Tim Snyder in his last start on Aug. 20, 2010, the 5-foot-6 Gonzalez is 2-0 with one No-Contest dating to August 2009.

The non-televised bouts will feature three promising fighters from Austin: Aaron Lan Franco

(1-0), of Austin, meets Thomas Diagne (1-2), of San Jose, at 155 pounds and in an all-Austin affair of unbeatens, Drew Pendleton (2-0) will go up against Dennis Dombrow (2-0) at 145.

LAS VEGAS (Feb. 12, 2011)—All the questions posed by the members of the Las Vegas media had been answered by global superstar and Philippine Congressman Manny Pacquiao and three-division world champion “Sugar” Shane Mosley.

Now it was time for fans to have their say.

One by one they came to the microphone, poised and confident in front of two of the world’s greatest fighters on Saturday as the Pacquiao-Mosley bi-coastal press tour made a stop-over in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, the same site where Pacquiao and Mosley will battle for the World Boxing Organization (WBO) Welterweight world title as Showtime Networks Inc. and CBS have joined forces with Top Rank, Inc. to promote, produce and distribute the biggest boxing event of the year on May 7 on SHOWTIME PPV®.

Bob Arum, Pacquiao’s promoter and Top Rank CEO, hosted the raucous affair attended by more than a thousand enthusiastic fans with a select few standing to ask questions. Like this one posed to Pacquiao from a boy who looked to be around 12 or 13 years old: “Are you ready for Mosley’s body punishment?” he asked shyly. “Nice, kid. Thanks for that,” responded Pacquiao. “I have two months to prepare for this so I know I will get stronger. I’ll be ready on May 7.”

A question was asked by another fan who wondered what the difference will be fighting now on SHOWTIME as opposed to a competing network where their careers were made. “It’s an honor to fight on SHOWTIME and be covered by CBS,” answered Pacquiao. “A lot of people can watch the fight on TV. It’s just a big privilege.”

Said Mosley. “I’ve never fought on SHOWTIME. There have been a lot of big fights in the past on SHOWTIME like with Mike Tyson and Julio Cesar Chavez. A lot of guys have fought on that channel and I’m excited to make an impact on SHOWTIME. The Fight Camp 360 series is going to be great.”

And then the inevitable question came about Pacquiao’s new hairstyle, which he referred earlier in the day to looking somewhat like a Beatle. “Do you like Justin Bieber because of your new hairstyle?” a young female fan asked to a roar of laughter from the audience. “I like him, but Bruce Lee is my idol,” was Pacquiao’s response.

SHOWTIME expert analyst and commentator Al Bernstein took his turn at the microphone and praised both fighters. “This event is so extraordinary,” he said. “Any event that has an international icon who transcends the sport of boxing like Manny Pacquiao clearly has the chance and probably will be the event of the year in this sport. And then you toss into the mix a man I’ve known for so many years and a future Hall of Famer and, equally as important, one of the best known names in all of boxing like Shane Mosley. When you put that together clearly it makes for a great event and SHOWTIME is gratified to be a part of it.”

He continued. “SHOWTIME has a track record in the pay-per-view arena that is well documented. The 1990s brought a lot of great pay-per-views. In fact, the second Tyson-Holyfield fight was for 10 years the most viewed with the most buys of any pay-per-view. We take pride at SHOWTIME with providing a nuanced, informational approach that’s fan-friendly and follows the evolving story-line wherever it leads us. SHOWTIME always makes the fighters the stars and we will certainly take that approach once again on May 7.”

It was a day full of goodwill and complimentary talk, even between the fighters. Mosley told the Las Vegas press corps that, “Manny and are I are a lot alike. We don’t like to trash talk.”

And this: “Manny’s a warrior but he wants to take your heart out.”

And then this: “I’m pretty sure I’ll be able to land some shots on Manny. I think size will be the big difference in the fight. I’m too fast and too big and I have the height and reach advantage and I’m going to use it.”

Added Pacquiao: “That’s what I love about this fight because we don’t talk trash. I think Mosley is a different man (than Margarito) and a good man.”

The Pacquiao-Mosley U.S. media tour will continue on to New York at The Lighthouse at Chelsea Piers – Pier 61 with another open to the public news conference on Monday, Feb. 14.
