Toks Owoh – Journey Back To The Top Flight Begins On March 5th
Former IBF Inter-Continental Super Middleweight title challenger Toks Owoh is set to begin his second campaign for championship glory in earnest, albeit this time in the Cruiserweight division. His opponent, at the Steve Goodwin promoted ‘Unleash The Fury’ event at York Hall in Bethnal Green, London, on Saturday 5th March 2011, will be former Southern Area Light Heavyweight Champion JJ Ojuederie.
It was in 2000, after amassing a 16-1 record littered with TKO stoppages, that Toks earned the right to challenge American Glen ‘Road Warrior’ Johnson for the IBF Inter-Continental Super Middleweight Crown. Toks’ dream of a World title shot came to an abrupt end when he was stopped in the sixth round.
Johnson’s unexpected victory catapulted him to World fame and embarked him on a journey that see him move to Light Heavyweight and capture the WBO Inter-Continental light heavyweight title, before securing IBA, IBO and IBF Light Heavyweight World crowns.
Johnson became a super star and battled, and beat, such notables as Clinton Woods Antonio Tarver, Roy Jones, Daniel Judah and Yusaf Mack, whilst Toks on the other hand was left in the wilderness. No fights materialised for almost two years and when they did he had more or less been consigned to ‘journeyman’ status.
Toks did win the first of these bouts, against Mondli Mbonambi in January 2002, but then followed three bad point losses, against Valery Odin, Eric Teymour and Ryan Walls. In the final fight of his first campaign, a four rounder against Paul Bonson at the Equinox Nightclub in London, Toks secured the win and then called it a day.
In October ‘10, following a five year sabbatical, Toks made his long overdue return to the ring with a warm-up four rounder against Hastings Rasani. A tidy 39-37 points victory convinced Toks that he still had what it takes and the search for a promoter began.
His search didn’t take that long and in December 2010 promoter Steve Goodwin signed Toks. The bout against JJ Ojuederie on March 5th will be Toks’ debut under the Goodwin Promotions banner and his first step back towards the top flight.
Earlier today Toks spoke briefly on his upcoming fight. “There’s not much for me to say. It’s Leon Williams I really want but he don’t want to fight me. He knows what I am capable of, so he don’t want to fight me. JJ’s been calling me out for a long time so why not fight him.
This is my second fight back since 2005, I was # 3 in the world at one time in my career and I think I can get myself back there. I know what I can do.
I’ve been in there with some of the best fighters in the world, I’ve learned from being in with the best. JJ’s not in my league, just look at my record JJ’s never fight anyone like I fight.
It’s gonna be a good fight, with me and JJ Ojuederie it’s gonna be a good fight.”
Toks Owoh versus JJ Ojuederie is supported by a huge fourteen bout undercard featuring some of London’s best upcoming talents and includes Ultrachem TKO’s ‘Dynamo’ Daryl Setterfield against Birmingham’s Andrew ‘Paddy’ Patterson.
Three Ultrachem TKO gym mates of Daryl Setterfield are also on the show, Light Heavyweight Joel ‘El Toro’ McIntyre, Light Middleweights Nathan Weise and Brett O’Callaghan, all against yet to be named opponents.
Also appearing on the show are Rainham Super Featherweight Richard Hines, Luton Lightweight Michael ‘Chunky’ Devine, unbeaten Biggleswade Light Middleweight Jamie Boness, Minster. Boxing 360 taps into rich Guyana resources in Moore and Allen

NEW YORK (February 2, 2011) – Boxing 360 has tapped into the rich Guyana resources to sign world rated super bantamweight Leon “Hurry Up” Moore and unbeaten super middleweight Lennox “2 Sharpe” Allen, the reigning New York State champion.
Guyana has produced many world champions starting with “Barbados” Joe Walcott around the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th (Walcott as born in British Guyana but grew-up in Barbados), Dennis Andries, Andrew Lewis, Wayne Braithwaite, and Gairy St. Clair (fought out of Australia), along with top contenders Vivian Harris, Patrick Ford, Terrence Alli, Steven and Raul Frank, and Howard Eastman.
“Guyana is not a rich country and, boxing-wise, fighters from there are very hungry to succeed,” Boxing 360 founder and CEO Mario Yagobi said. “Boxing 360 has quite a following there, based on our website (www.Boxing360.com) hits, and I’ve received many emails from Guyanese boxers that want to join the Boxing 360 family. Guyanese love boxing and it’s a tremendous advantage for us that all of the boxers from there we’ve dealt with also speak English.”
Moore is rated No. 3 by the World Boxing Council, behind only Giovani Caro (Mexico) and Simpiwe Vetyeka (South Africa). The reigning WBC super bantamweight champion is Toshiaki Nishika. Moore is also as the No. 13 junior featherweight by the World Boxing Organization.
The 32-year-old southpaw Moore (27-2, 22 KOs), from Georgetown, Guyana, is the reigning WBC CABOFE super bantamweight champion, as well as the former NABA, PABA, Guyanese and CABOFE bantamweight titlist.
Moore captured the WBC CABOFE and NABA bantamweight belts in September 2009, when he won a unanimous 12-round decision against former 2-time world champion Maurico Pastrana. A year ago, Leon won a unanimous 12-round decision versus Indonesia Boxing Association champion Marangin Marbun for the vacant PABA crown. In his last fight (Nov. 16), Moore won a 10-round decision against Breilor Teran in Guyana. The stylish southpaw, who recently moved to New York City, hasn’t lost in nearly four years and he represents Boxing 360’s best chance for its first world champion.
“Leon is getting his immigration papers in order and we hope to have him make his U.S. debut here in New York within the next month or two,” Yagobi noted. “We feel that he is one or two good fights away from a major fight, hopefully for the world title. Because of the division he fights in he’ll probably have to fight for the world title in Mexico or the Far East.
Allen is another Guyanese southpaw who turned pro 6 ½ years ago in Georgetown. Less than a year later, attempting to kick-start his boxing career, he moved to Perth, Western Australia. Things didn’t work-out there as expected for Allen and18 months later he returned home to Guyana.
He fought three more times at home before taking advantage of an opportunity to come to the United States in 2008 as a sparring partner for Bernard Hopkins who was preparing to fight Joe Calzaghe. The 6’ 1” Allen captured the vacant Guyanese super middleweight title a year ago and, soon after, he moved to Brooklyn and signed a promotional contact with Boxing 360.
During the past 11 months, Allen is 4-0-1 fighting in the U.S., and he’s become more comfortable in each fight. Back in November, Allen shook-off the passing of his brother to stop previously undefeated Nick Brinson in the seventh round for the vacant New York State title.
Last Friday night in Yonkers, Allen (14-0-1, 9 KOs), knocked out 23-fight veteran Jesse Orta in the second round. In his previous fight, Orta lasted five rounds against world title challenger Danny “The Golden Boy” Jacobs (20-1). Orta also went the distance with undefeated middleweight prospects Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin (22-0, 10 KOs) and 2004 U.S. Olympian Vanes Martirosyan (28-0, 17 KOs).
“We’re going to start putting him in tougher,” Yagobi added about Allen. “He first fought here last March and it’s night and day between that fight and his last. He is so much more confident now. He trains hard, plants his feet for added power, and is using his natural skills more. We’re going to keep him busy, fighting him every month or two, in order for him to gain experience against American fighters. There’s no rush; he’s only 25 and has a lot of potential. By the end of this year we’ll be able to put him in with almost anybody in the super middleweight division.”

NEW YORK, NY (Feb. 2, 2011) – Some of the top prospects in boxing will be showcased March 12 on the hottest New England pro boxing show of the 21st century, “Diamond Elite,” live on HBO World Championship Boxing from MGM Grand Arena at Foxwoods in Mashantucket, Connecticut.
World Boxing Council (“WBC”) Emeritus and The Ring Magazine middleweight champion, 2010 Fighter of the Year Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez (46-2-2, 25 KOs), takes on World Boxing Organization (“WBO”) junior middleweight champion, Sergiy “Razor” Dzinziruk (37-0, 34 KOs), in the 12-round main event for the vacant World Boxing Council Diamond middleweight title.
The chief supporting fight is “Celtic War,” pitting exciting middleweights Andy Lee of Ireland and Scotland’s Craig McEwan, in the 10-round co-feature of ethnic rivalry, potentially offering world title shot implications for the winner.
Lee (24-1, 18 KOs) will enter the ring riding a nine-fight win streak since his lone career setback to Bryan Vera in 2008. Since then, though, the Emmanuel Steward-trained Irish banger has defeated James Cook, Willie Gibbs, Michael Walker, and former world title challenger Mamadou Thiam. Lee, a 2004 Irish Olympian now living in New York City, is ranked #5 by the WBA and #14 by the WBC.
McEwan (19-0, 10 KOs) was born and raised in Edinburgh, Scotland, but he now lives in Hollywood, California where he trains with world renowned trainer Freddie Roach, who is a native New Englander. McEwan is coming off the most significant victory of his career on July 23, 2010, when he took a decision from former world title challenger Danny Perez. McEwan also holds a victory over Vera, the only man to defeat Lee as a professional.
An array of undefeated, promising prospects round-out a loaded top-to-bottom card against opponents to soon be determined. Leading the way is explosive Dominican featherweight Javier “El Abejon” Fortuna (13-0, 10 KOs), who has the same head trainer as Martinez, Gabriel Sarmiento, in an 8-round bout. Fortuna had many people tabbing his as the next “Marvilla” after his last performance when he knocked out the previously undefeated Victor Valenzuela in a matter of minutes.
A pair of unbeaten junior middleweights with 2008 Olympian pedigrees will be in action, Demetrius “Boo Boo” Andrade (12-0, 8 KOs), of Providence, and Puerto Rican knockout specialist Jonathan “Montequilla” Gonzalez (11-0, 11 KOs), in separate matches.
Local favorite Ryan “The Polish Prince” Kielczewski (8-0, 2 KOs), a lightweight from Quincy, Massachusetts, fights February 9 in New York City but he is scheduled to come right back Mar. 12 for a scheduled 6-rounder at MGM Grand at Foxwoods. The 2008 National Golden Gloves Tournament runner-up has a growing legion of passionate fans in New England.
Greek heavyweight Soyna Lamonakis (3-0, 1 KO), a 4-time New York Golden Gloves champion now living in Turner Falls, Massachusetts, brings her crowd-pleasing style into the squared-circle in a 6-round match. Preparing for St. Patrick’s Day, Irish-American light heavyweight Seannie Monaghan (4-0, 3 KOs), fighting out of Long Island, puts his undefeated pro record on the line in a 4-round bout. Also fighting on the undercard in a 4-rounder is California welterweight Abraham Lopez (1-1).

Westcott’s plans falling into place

Fan club growing as showdown at Supremacy approaches
When Sheldon Westcott essentially decided to call out 11-year veteran Thomas Denny, he knew he was asking for the biggest fight of his blossoming career.
So Westcott immediately got his game plan in gear when the fight was set for MFC 28: Supremacy – an encounter that plays a major role in the main card airing live on HDNet Fights from the River Cree Resort and Casino on Friday, Feb. 25.
His work is paying off.
“It’s all unheard of for me,” laughed Westcott. “I’ve never remotely been on target like this before. I’ve been dieting right, eating the proper food. This will be the easiest cut I’ve ever had to make. Everything is going so well.
“My boxing, kickboxing, jiu-jitsu – everything is coming together so much better. Before when I was having to cut so much weight, it was tough to find the energy for every workout and I really had to push myself. With this new way of doing things, I’m stronger now than I was at 214 pounds. I just feel so great.”
The opportunity to fight Denny has Westcott fired up as evidenced by his rapid readiness.
“I’ve wanted this fight for three years,” explained Westcott. “His experience is absolutely not intimidating. In fact, it’s going to make me train even harder. I want to beat him faster than (Nick) Diaz did, faster than Georges St. Pierre did. I’m putting an extremely big emphasis on that.
Westcott’s enthusiasm to square-off against Denny has also yielded a huge upswing in the fighter’s fan base. While he has always enjoyed some strong support, there’s little doubt Westcott will have his biggest cheering section ever backing him up against the “Wildman.”
Why not use the home-town advantage when you’ve got it?
“Ten years ago, if I’d have told someone that more than 200 of my friends and family would come out to see me in a fight no one would have believed me. Now I’ve got people coming from all over – some of them are driving 10 hours from Manitoba to be here. My support is amazing. It absolutely gives me a lot of motivation. It’s the main factor for me wanting to compete more,” said Westcott, who expects upwards of 250 rowdies out to cheer him on.
“I’m never nervous when I walk out but my adrenaline gets going so much when I start to hear everyone yelling their support for me. It’s like a family reunion. Everybody has a great time. But it’s not just family.
“I’ve met so many people at the fights over the years. I’ve answered a lot of questions just sitting next to people at past shows. They find out you’re a fighter and they ask you for your opinion on the fights. I love doing that.
“Now those same people want to come and watch my fights because they love watching me take dudes’ heads off.”
Fighting before a huge throng of supporters is certainly a far ways from the days when Westcott was a teenage track and field sensation. Ranked fifth in the country and earning a college scholarship, Westcott toyed with pursuing lofty ambitions in the decathlon, but eventually his passion swayed towards mixed martial arts. While he has fought somewhat sparingly over the course of his career, it’s the advanced training he partaken in overseas that Westcott believes has set up him well for the launching pad that has come with new multi-fight deal in the Maximum Fighting Championship.
The nomadic training regimen may have prevented the 26-year-old from compiling a lengthy resume, yet it has stockpiled a skill set that is ready to explode.
“I’ve trained everywhere,” recalled Westcott. “Amsterdam, England … with Silvio Bering , with Brazilian Top Team, all over – different places even in Edmonton.
“I’ve learned a lot, not just about fighting but about myself. When you go away to train, there’s no safety net with all your buddies. You’ve gone somewhere to earn a spot and if you don’t do what you’re supposed to do, they’re going to eat you alive. You can’t quit over there and make yourself look bad because you’re also representing Canada and Edmonton.
“There were mornings I’d wake up and not feel like training but you have to. You don’t want to get eaten alive so you have to put it on them. I had a great time in Amsterdam with Tom Watson, and Paul Daley, and Melvin Manhoef. And I enjoyed being at Team Roughhouse in England. There’s no quit in those guys and there was something new and different every day.
“It’s given me a whole different work ethic. It made me ready to come home and just destroy guys.”

Woodland Hills, California (February 1, 2011) – Art of Boxing Promotions in association with Bash Boxing return to the Warner Center Marriott in Woodland Hills, California for the 3rd installment of WARNER CENTER WAR on Friday, March 4, 2011. Known for some of the best and most even matched shows in Southern California, WARNER CENTER WAR III should not disappoint with a 12 Round Main Event for the vacant USBA Lightweight Championship between Ray Beltran Jr. (23-4, 15 KOs) and Carlos Vinan (10-8-2, 2 KOs).
Both main event participants are coming off huge upset knockouts of favored opponents in 2010. Vinan, from Newark, New Jersey by way of Ecuador, shocked the 2nd ranked lightweight in the world, Anthony Mezaache with an 8th round knockout last July in Atlantic City. Mezaache was undefeated in his previous 11 fights and held the European Lightweight Title prior to meeting Vinan in what was thought to be a showcase bout for the Frenchman. Beltran, from Los Angeles, California by way of Mexico, went up north to Seattle in his last bout and shocked heralded David Torres (21-1) in front of his hometown fans. The upset victory earned Beltran a Top 15 ranking in the NABO and USBA. After world ranked fighters, Vicente Escobedo and John Molina pulled out of scheduled title bouts with the dangerous Beltran, an exciting bout was made to fight Vinan for the vacant USBA Lightweight title. Beltran trains out of Wildcard Boxing Club under the tutelage of Freddie Roach and former Olympian Pepe Reilly, and is a regular sparring partner for Manny Pacquaio and Amir Khan.

Gomez and Montague ready to prove they’re Top 10 material

Lemoore, Calif. – It’s not too often that a champion is overlooked, but that looks like it might be the case for February 18’s Tachi Palace Fights’ “All or Nothing” mixed martial arts show at the Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino in Lemoore, Calif.
In what’s being called by many MMA diehards as “the other flyweight fight”, Tachi Palace Fights Flyweight champ Ulysses Gomez defends his title for the first time against Darrell Montague.
The bout has been overshadowed by the addition of the World’s top ranked 125 pounder Jussier da Silva, as the Brazilian puts his unblemished record on the line against World Extreme Cagefighting vet Ian McCall. Da Silva (9-0) made his first appearance in the U.S. in December with a decision victory over Danny Martinez. McCall (8-2) has notable losses to Dominic Cruz and Charlie Valencia, but the San Clemente, Calif. fighter will be looking to turn things around in a more natural weight class.
“Yeah, I think we’ve been overlooked a bit, but it is what it is really. We just have to go out there and give the people something to watch and put on a good show,” said Gomez (7-1), who trains out of Las Vegas, Nev.’s Cobra Kai Jiu Jitsu and Ken Hahn’s Striking Unlimited.
“Honestly, the proof is in the pudding. I think that Darrell and I have the skills to be considered in the Top 10 in the World, but obviously there are other guys there and have been built up through Shooto or WEC and have fought on TV.”
Both Gomez and Montague (8-1) have carried the torch for Tachi Palace Fights and with the recent explosion of the division and many of the top flyweights ready to make the trip into the U.S. to fight, the pair have been pitted against each other.
“The Gomez and Montague bout was in the works well before we signed Jussier da Silva, Danny Martinez, John Dodson, Ian McCall or Yamaguchi,” said Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino Entertainment Coordinator Jeremy Luchau. “It was obvious after Montague knocked out Luis Gonzalez that he was the No. 1 contender and with Gomez fighting in Bellator we had to push the fight back a few months. It just so happened within that time we were able to sign some great fighters at that weight, but we stuck to our word with Montague and still believe that both of these fighters belong in the Top 10 in the World.”

Montague comes from the famed Millennia MMA Camp and has been a main training partner for both Charlie Valencia and Manny Tapia, both of which were ranked in the Top 10 in the World at 135 pounds at one time or another.
“He’s a tough kid with a good record and has only lost once,” Gomez said of Montague. “He has some good striking and is good on the ground. I thought he did really well on the ground with Gonzalez, who is a black belt. I was surprised he did so well and I don’t think people give him the credit he deserves on the ground.”
Montague has seven finishes in eight wins and his lone loss came to an opponent that he fought 20 pounds out of his weight class.
“Ulysses is tough as heck. He’s a great grappler and likes to get in there and bang. I think that we are pretty evenly matched,” Montague said. “I kind of feel like I’m fighting myself in a way because we are so similar.”
Gomez has five finishes in seven wins. His lone loss was to Rambaa Somdet, who was ranked No. 4 in the World at 125 pounds at the time of the fight.
“I think for people who follow the sport already have the opinion that Ulysses and I have the skills to be ranked in the Top 10 in the World,” Montague said. “I mean Ulysses only loss was a close decision loss to Rambaa and it was Ulysses third fight. I think whoever wins this fight should be in there.”
Gomez seems to agree.
“Come February 18, I’m going to show up and put on a show. Darrell and I are going to show everyone that we are two of the top 125-pound fighters in the world and I think that the winner of this fight should break into the top 10,” Gomez said.
In the main event, Tachi Palace Fights Middleweight Champion Leopoldo Serao defends his title against Montreal Quebec, Canada’s David Loiseau. Serao (17-7) rides a 3-fight win streak and the Oakland, Calif. based grappler has recorded 13 submissions in his 17 wins. Meanwhile, the former UFC title contender Loiseau (19-10) has won four of his last six bouts.

Leon Williams, Jimmy Tibbs And Don King Guest on Steve Bunce Show Thursday

Southern Area Cruiserweight Champion Leon ‘Solid’ Williams joins two legends of sport, top British trainer Jimmy Tibbs and American promoter Don King, as guests on Steve Bunce’s Boxing Hour on BBC Radio London, 94.9, this coming Thursday.
Leon will be talking about his British title aspirations, his recent change of management and training to Johnny Eames and his Ultrachem TKO Gym, as well as his upcoming showdown with Blackpool based Slovakian Richard Turba, at the Frank Maloney promoted show at the Brentwood Leisure Centre this coming Saturday, the 5th February 2011.
Jimmy, who during his 50 year boxing career has guided some of Britain’s greatest boxers, such as Nigel Benn, Chris Pyatt, Charlie Magri, Barry McGuigan, Steve Collins, Dennis Andries, Wayne Alexander, Lloyd Honeyghan, Alex Arthur and Frank Bruno to World Title success, is currently coaching some of the best young prospects in the country today – Colin Lynes, the Mitchell brothers, Kevin and Vinny, former Olympian Billy Joe Saunders, Freddie Turner, Akaash Bhatia and Billy Morgan.
Whilst Jimmy will be on the show to talk about one of the current fighters he trains at the Ultrachem TKO Gym in Canning Town, former IBO Light Welterweight World Champion Colin Lynes, who starts a new championship campaign as a Welterweight on Saturday 12th February 2011 at Olympia in Liverpool, you can be sure the conversation is bound to drift to stories of some of his former charges.
Whilst it’s fairly easy to know what Leon and Jimmy will be talking about, it’s a bit more difficult to know just what America’s greatest showman, since PT Barnum, Don King will have on his mind. To find out you’ll just have to tune in.

Robin Reid to make comeback in hometown Prizefighter
Robin Reid will make his boxing comeback in his hometown of Liverpool when he lines up in Prizefighter Super-Middleweights II on March 23.
The Grim Reaper steps out of retirement at Liverpool Olympia live on Sky Sports in the 17th edition of Matchroom Sport’s eight-man, one night tournaments, and warned prospective opponents that he still packs a punch despite leaving the game four years ago.
“I pack a punch and I’m not one of those guys who will say, ‘I’m going to knock all three guys out’ but that’s what I’m in there for,” said Reid. “I’m knocking on a bit, but I’ve kept myself in good shape – even when I retired four years ago, I stayed in the gym and I’m in this to win it. I know that if I catch somebody they are going to go and from what I’ve seen, the quicker you get them out of there the better – you have more time to recover and touchwood you get no cuts, and you are in good shape to progress.”
Reid was ringside on Saturday (January 29) at London’s Olympia as Travis Dickinson claimed the Light Heavyweights II crown on a dramatic night. Dickinson faced both reserves after injuries forced Margate’s Jack Morris and Reid’s fellow Liverpudlian Tony Dodson to withdraw from the action.
“I enjoyed what I saw in London, it’s very unpredictable, all the cuts and I felt for Tony, he knew he had to drop Menay Edwards (in the semi-final) and he did just that, he looked very good and it would’ve been a great final against Travis but those are the rules.
“The way I look at it is that I’ve got bags of experience and I’m used to doing 12 rounds but I’ll be fit enough to do three-threes.”
Reid – who will be 40 when fight night comes around – has applied for his license with the British Boxing Board of Control and will fight in February in a four-round warm-up contest. Reid was strongly linked in the national press with a place in the Light Heavyweights II line-up and although he says there was no truth in the rumours, it sparked the conversations that see the 46 fight veteran top the bill in Liverpool, alongside two more local stars, Tony Quigley and Carl Dilks.
“There was something in the press saying that I was going to be doing the Light Heavyweights II, I didn’t see it but the phone was going with people saying ‘I see you are making a comeback in Prizefighter,’” said Reid. “Eddie Hearn rang and asked if there was any truth in the story and I told him no. He then asked me about March and I asked for a week to think about it but it was a yes in two days! The money is good, don’t get me wrong, but I’m comfortable so I don’t need the money. In boxing at the minute there’s just Amir Khan and David Haye, but apart from that there’s no big stars there. I’m not saying I am a massive star but I’m a three-time World Champion. James DeGale is out there of course and that could be a great fight for me down the line.
“Tony, Carl and I are Liverpool lads so it’s bound to be a great night. The fans there will love it and the fact we’re all Scousers will give it an extra edge.”
Matchroom Sport managing director Eddie Hearn added: “When the story broke about Robin being in the Light Heavyweights II we were obviously keen to have such a big name in the event. I met with Robin and he still had a desire and still looked sharp in the gym. He feels he can still do some damage in the division and Prizefighter gives him the opportunity to find that out in just one night. Who knows what the future holds for him but by March 24 we will all know the answer.”
