Blackfriars fighter grabs Olympia place on January 29

Jack “13” Morris is the final boxer to join the line-up for Prizefighter Light-Heavyweights II at Olympia in London on January 29.

The 28 year-old has four wins and one defeat fighting out of Blackfriars, and after a nervous wait over Christmas to find out if he would be in with a shot at the title and £32,000 winner’s cheque live on Sky Sports and in 3D for the first time, Morris can now step up his training as the eighth fighter in the hunt.

“I had my fingers crossed that I would be the last fighter in there when we made the calls around Christmas so it was a nervous wait but I’m thrilled to be in there and raring to go,” said Morris, who lives in Ramsgate, Kent. “Prizefighter is a massive event and winning it would change my career so much, and I know I can do it.”

Morris works as a personal trainer with Cityboxer at The Ring Boxing Club in Southwark, where he also trains with manager and trainer Mark Burford, and says that his work is perfect to set him up for victory in the 16th edition of Matchroom Sport’s eight-man, one-night tournaments.

“We get the high profile bankers in so it pays well and helps me to keep up with my own training too,” said Morris. “I’ve also started up a Sports Management company on the back of the people I’ve met through work. I’m always in terrific shape and mentally sharp so I am going to be at my best on the night.”

Morris, who has also worked as a model, has not fought since a points victory over Adam Wilcox at The Troxy in east London back in November 2009. By entering Prizefighter, Morris gets a chance to launch himself into the public eye but also to gain revenge for his solitary loss, a debut defeat to fellow Prizefighter contender Michael Banbula.

“That fight taught me all I needed to know – that I needed to get a proper base in London and stay up during the week, and put more effort in,” said Morris. “So if anything I should be thanking him, even though I thought I won the fight.”

Morris completes a line-up that is headed by former British super-middleweight champion Tony Dodson returning to the fray on the back of two high-profile tilts at retaining the title in Liverpool against local rivals Paul Smith and Tony Quigley. St. Albans boxer Joe Smyth will be aiming to build on a 7-1 record and is joined by Surrey fighter Banbula, the Pole who enters in the best run of form in his 40 fight career, currently unbeaten in his last five fights including a win over previous Light-Heavyweights champ Tony Oakey and a draw against Tony Jeffries that halted the Sunderland Olympic bronze medallists winning streak.

Four young unbeaten fighters are aiming to grab their big chance to leap to the top of the queue for title shots in the division. 22 year-old Travis Dickinson – younger brother of Cruiserweights II winner Jon-Lewis – has three knockouts under his belt from his seven wins so far, with his first victory coming against Super-Middleweights champ Patrick Mendy when the pair made their debuts back in March 2009.

Former Wales amateur captain Llewellyn Davies has five wins to his name with three KOs, 26 year-old Kent fighter Menay Edwards has four wins from his first four fights with one knockout and popular Romford man Billy Slate in undefeated after his opening two fights as he kicks off his career at 28.

“He’s well known for being a great kickboxer so my job is to neutralize what he does best while I do what I do best to get the victory. He baits guys in well and defends takedowns well so I need to set up my takedowns well with strikes. If I don’t get the takedown, I can’t get frustrated. I have to come back up swinging.

“A lot of guys he’s fought, he’s defended the takedown once and his opponents haven’t tried a second or third takedown on him. The guys that have, have taken him down. So, my plan is not to expect to pop him one time with a good penetration shot and get him off his feet, but to continue to work and grind. That’s what we do best.”

“I don’t even worry about that. Every fight is the most important. The fights that come after this, will come after, but winning this fight in dominant fashion is key. I don’t worry about staying undefeated. I worry about winning this fight.”

“Camaraderie with the team. The family atmosphere. Holding each other up and keeping each other going. It’s a lot tougher than MMA — not having full control of your training, the seven-month season, competing 50 times a year. It was a lot for me. (In MMA), you have more control over your training. I can take a day off if I feel sore and come back the next day. The other training we do — boxing and Muay Thai – is fun.”

“I know that he’s a wrestler and a strong guy with a lot of experience. It’s going to be my toughest fight to date, for sure. I think I’ve prepared well and trained hard so I feel confident.”

“It’s like with football — people like seeing hits — or boxing where people like seeing knockouts. In MMA, you never know what’s going to happen. Someone can be winning a fight and, the next thing you know, they get knocked out with a punch, a headkick, or ground and pound. People like seeing that.”

“Twelve months ago while watching MMA on TV I told my wife that I wanted to sign with a major promotion and that’s what has happened. So, yes, I’m very excited about fighting on SHOWTIME and fighting for STRIKEFORCE.

“The change in opponents doesn’t mean much. It’s what you do the night of the fight, the changes you make and don’t make, that count. You can only fight who shows up the night of the fight.

“I’ve trained MMA fighters and participated in MMA seminars since 2005. But I decided that night watching MMA on TV that I wanted to fight. There are certain times at my age when you can say a lot of things that you want to do, but can’t. I could say I want to play in the NFL, but that could never happen.

“MMA was different. I was confident I could do this, but didn’t want to wait until it was too late. I can’t look back and say I regret not playing in the NFL, but I could look back and regret not giving MMA a go.

“MMA is a phenomenal sport. It is like a chess match. I like that aspect. For me, it is more mental than physical and it’s always been like that.’’

LOS ANGELES (Jan. 5, 2011) – The Los Angeles Matadors will start the new year hoping to build on their first place Americas Conference lead against their inherent rivals, the Mexico City Guerreros on Friday, Jan. 7 at the World Trade Center Mexico.

The Matadors have built up a commanding, three point lead in the Americas Conference over the Guerreros, anchored by undefeated bantamweight and two-time Olympian Rau’Shee Warren and undefeated lightweights Eric Fowler and Everton Lopes. John Richard Will Replace Ion Cherdivara At Nashville Municipal Auditorium

NEW YORK (Jan. 5, 2011) – Undefeated light heavyweight and four-time U.S. National Judo Champ and 2004 U.S. Judo Olympian, Dr. Rhadi Ferguson (2-0), will face John Richard (3-1) of Camden, S.C., in a featured match on the STRIKEFORCE Challengers Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fight card presented by Rockstar Energy Drink this Friday, Jan. 7, 2011, at Nashville Municipal Auditorium in Nashville, Tenn., during a Free Preview Weekend live on SHOWTIME® at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).

The 6-foot-1, 28-year-old Richard (pronounced “ruh-shard”) is a replacement for Canada’s Ion Cherdivara, who withdrew from the card late Tuesday due to visa problems.

Richard, a talented, explosive wrestler, has made short work of his opposition in his three victories, winning all in the first round. In his last outing on Oct. 23, he submitted (choke) Steven Banks at 1:19. In his outing before last on Aug. 28, he got Ryan Bedini to tap out via rear-naked choke at 3:38.

Since turning pro on April 24, 2010, Richard has mostly campaigned as a 230-pound heavyweight. This will be his long-awaited return to 205 pounds.

“In my last couple fights I was outweighed by 30-40 pounds, so getting back down to 205 is a big deal for me,’’ Richard said. “I’m really looking forward to fighting at this weight and excited to get the opportunity to step up and showcase my skills. I’m extremely grateful to STRIKEFORCE for getting this chance.

“You’ll see. At 205, I’m one of the biggest and strongest at this weight around.’’

Despite the short nice, Richard is confident he can manufacture what many would consider a major upset.

“I know about my opponent, but I’m in fighting shape and as ready as I can be,’’ he said. “I will definitely not be in awe of him or the atmosphere. In fact, I am totally calm.

“I’m strong on the ground and I feel my standup is decent. I am looking forward to a great fight.’’

Richard, who wrestled at Limestone College in South Carolina, trains at two gyms in South Carolina – the Revolution and Linic. He is married with one child.

SHUMENOV: ‘BRAEHMER DOESN’T DESERVE TO BE WORLD CHAMP’

SHYMENT, Kazakhstan (Jan. 5, 2011) – A terribly upset and disappointed WBA/IBA Light Heavyweight World Champion Beibut Shumenov was in near shock to learn that his scheduled opponent for Saturday night’s unification fight, WBO titlist Juergen Braehmer, left Shymkent last night without informing or explaining why he has pulled out of “The Unification.”

Beibut Shumenov (10-1, 6 KOs) chose to fight Braehmer (36-2, 29 KOs) in a world unification match in only his 12th pro fight. However, Braehmer’s inexplicable behavior has left Shumenov without a world champion opponent for this weekend.

NFL Vet Tyler King Makes Pro MMA Debut Saturday

For the first time ever, heavyweights will take center stage in the American Fighting Organization when the first ever AFO heavyweight champion is crowed in a bout between New London, Connecticut’s Mike Dexter and Brockton, Massachusetts’ Shawn Galano this Saturday night at AFO “New Year’s Redemption” in Mansfield.

However, they’re not the only big boys who will be stepping into the cage. NFL veteran and former UConn Defensive standout Tyler King will be making his pro debut against the 6’8” Muay Thai machine James Quelle.

King, the son of former New England Patriot’s linebacker Steve King, will be making his second appearance for the AFO after earning a 1st round TKO in an amateur bout last October at AFO “Halloween Havoc”. His amateur career was brief, yet successful as he went 2-0.

Despite his amateur career being short, King feels he’s ready to go pro.

“I just turned 30. I’m no spring chicken so if I’m going to do something, I should go it now.” King said recently. “With My skill set and athletic ability, I feel like I can compete with guys at this level.”

“My plan is to go in there and try as be well rounded as possible, look for the finish and if it’s not there, try to grind it out”, he said.

Quelle, was a tad shorter with words. When asked what he knew about King, his answer was, “nothing”. When asked his prediction for the fight, his answer was “knockout”.

But both men are aware that there could be more at stake in their bout with the crowning of the AFO’s first ever heavyweight champion later in the night and it’s understood that the winner could become an eventual title challenger.

“Galano and Dexter are great fighters but I’m ready to challenge myself. If you’re not in it to win, why be in it?”, King said about the possibility of someday challenging for the AFO title.

Galano vs. Dexter for the AFO heavyweight title and King vs. Quelle are just two of over a dozen MMA fights featured at this Saturday’s “New Years Redemption” event.
