Fight Preview

· Popular Northern Virginia fighter Jimmy Lange (33-4-2, 23 KOs) returns to headline his 11th Patriot Center show when he faces Joe Wyatt (23-1, 15 KOs) in a ten-round championship bout for the North American Boxing Association’s (NABA) vacant 154-pound U.S title (NABA is a division of the World Boxing Association/WBA). The former star from season one of The Contender has won his last two bouts but will step up in competition to face in Wyatt, a former top 20 world contender whose only loss was to undefeated Reda Zam Zam for the WBA’s Inter-Continental light middleweight title.

· Looking to capture his 40th career win in front of his hometown fans, former three-time, middleweight world champion William Joppy (39-6-1, 30 KOs) of Washington, DC will take on battle-tested Cory “Black Ice” Cummings (17-4, 13 KOs) of Baltimore. Joppy has taken on elite competition such as Bernard “The Executioner” Hopkins and Felix “Tito” Trinidad, while Cummings has gone toe-to-toe with the likes of Keith Holmes and Montell Griffin.

· Among the action-packed undercard, three fighters are looking to remain undefeated, including Fairfax, VA welterweight prospect Todd “White Lightning” Wilson (8-0, 2 KOs), a former Virginia Military Institute collegiate national champion, going up against Corey “Bad Boy” Goodwin (7-5, 4 KOs) of Columbia, SC.

· In another DC-Baltimore rivalry bout, Wilson’s unbeaten middleweight teammate Zain “Tiger” Shah (3-0, 2 KOs) of Chantilly, VA will have his hands full with confident Baltimore fighter Omar Sims (5-2, 3 KOs), who has won his last two fights by way of knockout.

· In a bout for local bragging rights, Alexandria Boxing Club’s Brandon Quarles (2-0), will square off against LA Boxing’s Lawrence Jones (3-2-2, 1 KO) of Chantilly, VA.

· Lange’s former Contender teammate Jonathan Reid (34-13-7, 19 KOs) of Nashville, TN will face Baltimore ring veteran Mike McFail (12-40-2, 4 KOs) in a six-round bout. Reid is coming off a loss to undefeated Caleb Truax while McFail dropped a six-round decision to Lange back in August.

· Junior middleweight Perry Ballard (20-2-1, 15 KOs) is set to return to the Patriot Center after appearing in the venue’s very first pro boxing card more than five years ago. The Martinsburg, WV fighter suffered his first pro loss at the hands of Lange before an electrifying crowd on September 17, 2005. He will face Booker Mullins (3-9) of Spartanburg, SC in a six-round contest.

London Shows Overwhelming Support For Women’s Boxing At 2012 Olympics

As reported yesterday professional female boxers Marianne ‘Golden Girl’ Marston and Angel ‘The Artist’ McKenzie, along with dozens of WinkBall.com citizen reporters, descended on Carnaby Street in the heart of London on a mission to raise awareness that Women’s Boxing will be included in the Olympics for the first time in 2012.

During the two hour flash raid on fashionable Soho Marianne and Angel demonstrated their boxing skills as the WinkBall.com citizen reporters undertook video interviews with the gathering crowd and passers by.

In all there were 385 video interviews, the overwhelming majority firmly in favour of Women’s Boxing and it’s inclusion as an Olympic sport.

Many of those interviewed echoed the total support of Leyla who firmly stated, “I think it’s a good thing that women are boxing in the Olympics. I think it’s fair that women have the right to participate in the same sports as men”

Others, such as Thane, showed their conditional support by saying, “They should be allowed to, equal opportunities and stuff. As long as they wear the correct padding I’m sure they will be fine.”

In a similar vein Danny stated, “With the right safety procedures in place there is absolutely nothing wrong with it at all. It encourages healthy lifestyle, good competition, dedication and I think not having Women’s boxing there would be sexually prejudiced. What are the differences in risks to male and female competitors, is it just that some people think it’s unlady like. But I’m all for it. “

Most of those interviewed responded in similar fashion to Simon who said, “That’s fine, I have no problem with it all. I think women should participate in boxing if they want, let them go for it.” and when asked if he felt it would inspire other women to take up the sport Simon replied, “I think it will. Watching other women standing up for what they want to do.”

Whilst the overwhelming majority clearly supported Women’s Boxing there were one or two that didn’t, such as Lucy who said “Female boxing is clearly ridiculous, it’s a man’s sport”.

Marianne, who fights Lana Cooper on December 4th at York Hall in Bethnal Green, London, responded to the interviews by saying, “I have watched around two hundred or so of the interviews on Winkball.com and it is wonderful to know that so many people are supportive of Women’s Boxing.

I think this Winkball.com initiative will open a few people’s eyes to a sport that until now has barely received any exposure. I also hope it will encourage people to watch the England squad at the GB Amateur Boxing Championship on BBC TV next weekend so they can see our future champions in action ahead of the 2012 London Olympics.” before cheekily adding a little self promotion by saying, “Or come and watch me fight at York Hall on the 4th December.”

Agreement Provides the IBF Super Middleweight World Champion
With Numerous Challengers in the 168-Pound Division

LAS VEGAS (Nov. 5, 2010)–-Showtime Networks Inc. announced today that undefeated IBF Super Middleweight World Champion Lucian Bute, one of the most talented pound-for-pound and popular fighters of this era, has signed a multi-fight agreement with the premium television network. The announcement was made by Ken Hershman, Executive Vice President and General Manager of SHOWTIME Sports®, and Jean Bedard, Bute’s promoter and President of InterBox, at a press conference in Las Vegas.

With the network’s ongoing Super Six World Boxing Classic, which includes the best active fighters in the division, Bute is afforded a number of potential matchups on SHOWTIME. The remaining tournament participants all have high-stakes bouts in the coming weeks: Allan Green-Glen Johnson (tomorrow, Sat., Nov. 6 live at 10p ET/PT), Carl Froch-Arthur Abraham (Sat., Nov. 27 for vacant WBC title) and WBA World Champion Andre Ward against non-tournament contender Sakio Bika, (Sat., Nov. 27). The field boasts multiple super middleweight belts, boxing styles and virtually anything a courageous super middleweight would seek in opposition.

Bute’s first fight in the new deal will be scheduled for the first quarter of 2011 against an opponent to be announced.

“We are very excited for Lucian Bute to rejoin us on SHOWTIME,” said Hershman. “In the next six weeks alone, SHOWTIME will feature a virtual who’s who of the most talented and accomplished champions at both 168 and 175 pounds. Lucian’s entrance into that mix is sure to deliver even more thrilling, closely matched fights in 2011 to our network subscribers.”

“It’s a real honor for me to be given this opportunity to face the top fighters of my division on the premium television network SHOWTIME. I want to prove that I’m the best super middleweight in the world and this opportunity will allow me do just that,” stated Bute, who gladly put his vacation in Romania on hold to announce this signing and to meet the press in Las Vegas. “I want to thank Jean Bedard and Ken Hershman for getting this deal done. I could not be happier or more proud.”

“This is a great day for InterBox,” said Bedard. “This agreement proves to everyone in boxing that InterBox is a world-class organization and Lucian is a great champion. Lucian will have the chance to fight the best fighters in his category and clean up his division. Bute, 30, is Romanian born and living in Montreal, Canada, where he routinely draws a sellout crowd. He is a natural left-handed fighter with supreme counter-punching ability, speed and power. The 6-foot, 2 ½-inch Bute carries a record of 27-0 with 22 knockouts.

Bute won the IBF title from Alejandro Berrio in 2007. He has since made six successful defenses against William Joppy, Librado Andrade twice, Fulgencio Zuniga, Edison Miranda and, just two weeks ago, Jesse Brinkley. All but one of those wins has come by knockout. In his first appearance on SHOWTIME, Bute retained the IBF crown with a lopsided 12-round decision over Andrade on Oct. 24, 2008, in one of the most talked about final rounds of the last decade.

Bute began boxing in Galat, Romania when he was 14. He had a stellar amateur career, winning 235 of 250 bouts. Bute earned a bronze medal at the 1999 World Championships in Houston, Texas, and a bronze medal in 1998 in Argentina at the Junior World tournament. He moved to Canada in October 2003 at the age of 23. He turned pro on Nov. 22, 2003.

The demand for tickets for ‘Judgement Day’ Double title spectacular at York Hall, Bethnal Green, London on Saturday 4th December 2010 is so high that it is expected that the show will be sold out by mid-November.

A smiling Steve Goodwin, the promoter of ‘Judgement Day’, spoke briefly on the situation, “The demand for tickets for Judgement Day have just gone through the roof. This just goes to show that the demand for quality boxing events in London is still strong and the public enjoy a well promoted shows featuring exciting well matched fights.

Demand has been so high we decided to restrict the tickets available to the fighters on the show. We’re predicting the show will be sold out within the next week or two.“

Its no surprise tickets are going fast as this don’t miss event features no less than 14 top class fights and is headlined by the explosive Yassine El Maachi, who is set to defend his International Masters Light Middleweight title, against the seriously tough France based Haitian Jimmy Colas.

El Maachi, who won the vacant title back in April following a scintillating battle with France’s Bertrand Aloa, will have his work cut out as Colas, who is currently fourth in the European Light Middleweight rankings, has an impressive championship record that includes his being the French Light Middleweight Champion, which he defended twice, a two time EBU Light Middleweight Champion and he is the current WBC Latino Light Middleweight Champion.

El Maachi appears to relish the opportunity to take on such serious competition having recently stated, “Steve (Goodwin) has unveiled a gem and got the European number 4 over for me. I know this is costing him money and I really appreciate him backing me like this. No one has ever done this for me before and I will repay him by putting on a fantastic show and destroying Colas.

Colas has never met a fighter like me before and I will use angles and frustrate him and ultimately toy with him. Colas is a similar type of boxer to Matthew Hall and I would have knocked out Matthew Hall. Unfortunately Kocelny got there first.”

Co-headlining ‘Judgement Day’ will be Ryan ‘Mr Attitude’ Barrett who will be defending his newly won International Masters Lightweight title, against the heavy hitting Hungarian knockout artist Istvan Nagy.

Barrett will be looking to retain the form that see him utterly destroy, the normally classy, Mark ‘The Flash’ Alexander in less than 90 seconds to lift the belt on September 11th. On the night Barrett plain out boxing the hapless Alexander, who was sent to the canvas no less than three times, before the referee called a halt to proceedings.

There are no less than twelve top class support fights including the highly anticipated all girl Featherweight clash, rescheduled from September 11th, between Ultrachem TKO Boxing Gym’s Marianne ‘Golden Girl’ Marston, and the highly experienced Welsh battler Lana Cooper.

Marston, the protégé of Heavyweight Champion of the World Smokin’ Joe Frazier and Cruiserweight King Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham, has been taking no chances in her preparations for the showdown with Cooper, as she has pulled in World class sparring with no less than two of Cooper’s former opponents, Big Brother star and Lightweight stalwart Angel ‘The Artist’ McKenzie and the UK’s number one Lightweight Laura Saperstein. This is in addition to 2012 London Olympic Gold favourite Lightweight Ruth Raper and undefeated Bantamweight Laura Norton.

Another of Johnny Eames’ rising stars on the show is the ever stylish crowd pleasing Featherweight ‘Saint’ George Jupp, against a yet to be named opponent.

Back in September, at the ‘It’s Personal’ event, ‘St George’ put on one of the best boxing displays of the season so far, when he plain outclassed the experienced Pavels Senkovs with his slick long jab and fast hands. When Senkovs tried to bully his way back into the fight Jupp showed that, even though he is a truly skilled boxer, he was quite happy to stand centre ring and slug it out when needed.

Fresh from his superb victory, over veteran Hastings Rasani, the highly popular Essex Cruiserweight Tony ‘The Conqueror’ Conquest will again be in action and looking to extend his unbeaten record against the tall and dangerous Welsh southpaw Hari Miles

Conquest’s gym mate, the highly entertaining Welterweight John Wayne Hibbert, will be making his welcome return to the York Hall. The Stetson wearing Hibbert is an all action fighter with a knockout reputation – four stoppage finishes in his six outings to date.

Welterweight Bobby Gladman makes his long awaited return to York Hall. The highly entertaining Gladman will be looking to extend his unblemished record to seven against Bulgarian bruiser Danny Dontchev.

Explosive all action fighters seem to be the standard at Steve Goodwin promoted shows, and Waltham Abbey’s Phil Gill, AKA ‘The Experience’, exemplified this back in September when he slugged it out with Damien Turner for four action drama packed rounds to increase his unbeaten record to six. On December 4th Gill will be up against the highly experienced Craig Dyer.

In the very same vein unbeaten Light Middleweight War Lord Michael ‘The Zambezi Hitman’ Norgrove will be back in action, against Matt Scriven, and looking to take his unbeaten record to four.

Bethnal Green’s own Jamie Arlain gets his second outing. Big things are expected of the local young Light Welterweight. Back in September Arlain impressed on his pro debut out pointing the highly experienced tough guy Danny Dontchev.

Islington’s John ‘The Gorilla’ Ryder will surely be looking to emulate his stunning debut victory. So far Ryder has had just 90 seconds of ring action. That’s right it took him just half a round to beat the hapless Ben Deghani into submission. Deghani is no sapp either, back in June, at the King’s Hall Belfast, he broke the jaw of rising star Kris Carslaw during their clear ‘Fight of the Night’ encounter.

Another single fight veteran with an early knockout record is Ely, Cambs Light Welterweight Tyler Goodjohn. His first victim, Dale Hutchinson, staying the course 264 seconds longer than Denghani did with Ryder.

Rounding out the show are two debutants. Super Featherweight Richard Hines against Scott Moses, and from the Ultrachem TKO Gym stable Super Middleweight Brett O’Callaghan, against a yet to be named opponent.

Super Six Participant Glen Johnson Training At Johnny Tocco’s Gym In Las Vegas

Super Six World Boxing Classic participant Glen Johnson stopped by Johnny Tocco’s Boxing Gym in Las Vegas for an intense, last minute training session on Thursday.

The veteran contender and former light heavyweight world champion was greeted by former opponent Merqui Sosa.

Johnson will take on world-ranked contender Allan Green in a must-win Super Six World Boxing Classic bout on Saturday, Nov. 6, live on SHOWTIME® (10 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast) from MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas. The winner of the 12-rounder will earn a coveted spot in the tournament Semi-Finals.

Johnson, who has appeared in seven world title fights and has defeated some of the best prizefighters of this era, including boxing legends Roy Jones, Jr., and Antonio Tarver, has an opportunity to reestablish himself as one of the world’s elite prizefighters.
