NEW YORK (Oct. 15, 2010) – Super Six World Boxing Classic fans will get a chance to see WBA world champion and tournament-point leader Andre Ward headline the SHOWTIME telecast on Saturday, Nov. 27 (live at 9p.m. ET/PT), it was officially announced one week after Ward’s tournament opponent Andre Dirrell pulled out of their Group Stage 3 fight due to injury.

Ward, who has already locked up a Semifinal berth in the Super Six World Boxing Classic, will defend his WBA super middleweight world title against world ranked top-10 contender Sakio “The Scorpion” Bika (28-4-2, 19 KOs) of Sydney, Australia, by way of Douala, Cameroon, in the second-half of a SHOWTIME doubleheader.

The fight, which will take place in front of Ward’s hometown fans at Oracle Arena in Oakland, Calif., will not be part of the Super Six tournament, Ken Hershman, Executive Vice President and General Manager, SHOWTIME Sports®, announced. The event is being promoted by Goossen Tutor Promotions in association with Golden Boy Promotions, the promoter for Bika.

There will, however, be Super Six World Boxing Classic tournament action on Saturday, Nov. 27, from Finland. In the opening bout of the SHOWTIME doubleheader, “King” Arthur Abraham will meet Carl “The Cobra” Froch for their pivotal Group Stage 3 bout for the vacant WBC world title. This bout will air on same day delay from the Hartwall Areena in Helsinki.

The 31-year-old Bika will be making his third world title appearance, challenging for the belt that Ward wrested from Mikkel Kessler with a brilliant performance in the opening Group Stage of the Super Six tournament. Bika is 0-1-1 in world title fights, having lost a decision to Joe Calzaghe in Oct. 2006 and being forced to settle for a controversial draw against Marcus Beyer in Germany in May 2006.
Two of Bika’s most noteworthy victories came when he crushed Peter Manfredo, Jr. (TKO 3) in Nov. 2008 and when he outpointed Sam Soliman across eight rounds in Oct. 2007.

As evidenced by the fact that he has never been knocked out, Bika is known for his granite chin and is regarded as one of the toughest fighters in the world at 168 pounds. A 2000 Olympian for Cameroon, Bika has fought some of the division’s elite champions, but has long accused the big-name super middleweights of avoiding him.

In an opportunity to get back into the world title picture, Bika lost his most recent start controversially when he was disqualified for hitting Jean Paul Mendy while he was down in the first round of an IBF world title eliminator this past July 31. On his way to what looked like a certain knockout win, Bika dropped Mendy to his knees with a left hand, then landed a right uppercut that caused Mendy to pitch forward face-first on the canvas. Referee Joe Cortez ruled that Bika had fouled Mendy and he called the fight at 1:19 of the first round.

HAYE IS “A MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN” FOR HARRISON

Challenger’s trainer says Booth won’t have the answers

David Haye doesn’t have the technical ability or the support in his corner to beat Audley Harrison, according to the challenger’s trainer Shadeed Suluki.

The experienced corner man has been putting Harrison through his paces at Big Bear in California ahead of the World Heavyweight title fight with Haye on November 13 in Manchester, and Suluki believes that the combination of Audley’s preparation and positive state of mind will see him emerge victorious.

“Audley knows himself now, he is in a very comfortable place,” said Suluki. “He knows his ability more than ever and this is his destiny, he feels it, I feel it, we all feel it. This is a match made in heaven for us.”

Harrison continues to train at high altitude until he returns to the UK 18 days ahead of the fight, and no expense has been spared in his preparation for the fight with top quality sparring partners and a great support team.

Suluki has a wealth of experience as a trainer in the corner of title fights, including Lamon Brewster’s win over Wladimir Klitschko for the WBO Heavyweight title after the American had been floored by the Ukrainian, and he believes that Harrison’s team is stronger as Haye’s trainer/manager Adam Booth does not have the boxing know-how to change Haye’s tactics in the corner.

“I don’t take anything away from Booth but he’s not at the same level as top trainers like Emanuel Steward and Thell Torrence – he doesn’t know boxing. When we get in the trenches and Haye goes back to his corner and has to make adjustments, will Adam have the answers? There is a big question mark over that.”

Harrison’s main man acknowledged that the 29 year-old title holder is physically sharp but cast doubt over his decision making and his technique.

“I question how smart he is, he is fast and a good athlete but is he really technical? I think he just throws punches without knowing why he is throwing punches. I just don’t think he is very well schooled.”

REMEMBERING MURRAY WILSON

Murray Wilson, the co-manager of Yuri Foreman died of a heart attack in his office on Wednesday, October 13, 2010.

There are only good things to say about Murray. He was a classic New York guy. He was the owner of Campagnola’s, a popular restaurant in the Upper East Side where everybody wanted a seat.

The thing I want to say about Murray is that he was my good friend, and he always will be. I will miss him dearly.

His funeral will take place Sunday, October 17, 2010 at 12 noon.

Salinas Appears in Men’s Fitness, Shoots Documentary with World Champs

MIAMI, Okla. (Oct. 14, 2010) – Four-time light heavyweight world champion Antonio Tarver (27-6, 19 KOs) of Tampa, Fla., will make his debut at heavyweight when he faces Nagy Aguilera (16-4, 11 KOs) of Newburgh, N.Y. by way of the Dominican Republic, in the 10-round main event tomorrow/Friday, Oct. 15, on ShoBox: The New Generation live on SHOWTIME® (11 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast).

In the co-feature at Buffalo Run Casino, unbeaten Shawn Porter (16-0, 12 KOs) of Cleveland, Ohio, will make his fourth appearance on ShoBox in 10 months when he drops down a notch in weight to take on Hector Munoz (18-3-1, 11 KOs) of Albuquerque, N.M., in a 10-round welterweight bout.

Tarver, 41, is making the move from the SHOWTIME broadcast booth back to the ring, where he hasn’t fought since May 2009. He is attempting to become only the third light heavyweight to win a world heavyweight title. The others were Michael Spinks, in 1985, and Roy Jones Jr., in 2003.

Aguilera, 24, owns a career-best first-round knockout over former World Boxing Council (WBC) heavyweight champion Oleg Maskaev in 2009.

WEIGHTS: Tarver, 221 pounds, Aguilera 232; Porter, 146.4 pounds; Munoz 146.8.

The fighters participated at a press conference that preceded the weigh-in Thursday at Buffalo Run Casino.

“I’m not going to put pressure on myself and say I want to win impressively, or I need to win impressively. I just want to do enough to win and look good if possible. I’m definitely excited about this fight and returning to the ring and not having to worry about making weight.

“I wanted a real test and I know Aguilera has trained hard for this, and he looks in great shape. So I expect a good fight.

“My dream is to win a world heavyweight title. It only takes one person to believe in you – and that’s me. The rest will come aboard later.

“In this weight division, I’m definitely a work in progress. There are obviously a lot of questions. I have questions. Can I hurt a true heavyweight? Can I take their punches?

“Tomorrow, you will get a glimpse. I hope to break him down mentally, and then physically. Styles make fights, and this is a good fight for me. I want to thank everyone who helped make it possible.’’

NAGY AGUILERA

“I’m still young and learning but I think Tarver made a mistake fighting me. He picked me from what he saw from ringside in my last fight, but I barely trained for that one. For this I worked very hard for two months and I am in great shape. I had my best camp ever and have never been as prepared for a fight like I am for this one.

“I think people are going to be surprised at my punching power and my speed. I don’t think they realize how hard I hit or how fast I am.

“A fight of this magnitude is a tremendous opportunity for me. It’s like a world title fight. He has a lot of experience but I have youth on my side. I am not nervous. I’m ready for the fight of my life.

“I can’t predict a knockout or a decision; I just want to win. I promise you, this will be a good show.’’

SHAWN PORTER

“I want to thank Gary Shaw, Buffalo Run and SHOWTIME. Fighting on ShoBox has been a great experience for me. It has definitely given me a lot more exposure than I had and a lot more people are noticing me, which is very important in the sport of boxing.

“Everything is in order and in place. I am 16-0 and after tomorrow I will be 17-0.

“I’m looking forward to a good fight. Munoz is exactly what you see on tape: a straight-ahead, aggressive fighter with a great chin. I’m prepared to do what it takes to get my way around him and take him out of there.

“The decision to drop down in weight was a team decision. At my height (5-foot-7), it’s probably better for me to fight at 147 than 154. In the ring I feel the same now fighting at welterweight as I did at junior middleweight.’’

HECTOR MUNOZ

“I only had three amateur fights so I’m living the dream right now and can’t wait for Friday. I am here to bring it, and then bring it some more.

“This fight is everything to me. Now, I fight now only for me but for my three-month-old son, Maximus Gabriel. I need to feed him and take care of him and the way to do that is to win fights.

“Porter has the name, he was a 2008 U.S. Olympian and I know he’s favored. But you can’t measure heart and no one has a bigger heart them me. I am here to win.’’

KING ARTHUR AND CARL FROCH CONTINUE FEUD ON NEUTRAL GROUND, START WAR OF WORDS

HELSINKI, FINLAND (Oct. 14, 2010) – King Arthur Abraham’s first face-to-face meeting with Carl “The Cobra” Froch on neutral territory was certainly one to remember as they wasted no time to exchange pleasantries during Thursday’s kick-off press conference in Helsinki, Finland.

In Group Stage 3 of the Super Six World Boxing Classic, the two superstars will lock horns at the famous Hartwall Areena on November 27, with the vacant WBC Super Middleweight Title on the line.

Froch (26-1, 20 KOs) said he found it odd that Abraham calls himself “The King” and also dresses like one.

“Abraham has a picture of himself posing as a king at his house,” Froch stated. “He wears a plastic crown and a feather coat. I find that very strange and it tells you something about him. He will certainly not be the king after we have met inside the ring. I am going to stuff him like a chicken.”

Abraham (31-1, 25 KOs), as always, had a proper reply. “I will be happy to give him a plastic crown after I am done with him. He will never get a real crown. And he will not get the WBC Title either. I think he is a good puncher but he is an even better talker. I don’t like to talk much before a fight. I prefer to let my fists do the talking in the ring on November 27.”

Froch also made fun of Abraham’s size, saying he brought in undersized sparring partners of around five feet.

“That will be very good preparation for our fight,” Froch stated. “But I have a lot of respect for Abraham. He has good power and he is a fair sportsman. I am ready for an explosive fight. There will only be one winner and that is the Cobra.”

Replied Abraham: “Inside the ring, size does not matter. All that matters is the head. And Carl Froch better have a clear head on November 27. If not, I will take it off.”

Abraham’s coach Ulli Wegner believes that Froch will be in for a painful night.

“I don’t think he has realized yet how hard Arthur can punch,” the seven-time German coach-of-the-year said. “Once he finds out on November 27, it will be too late. We have prepared well for Froch. We have analyzed him closely and know that he is a dangerous opponent. Froch is a tough guy, a former world champion and he has proven himself at Super Middleweight. But he will not beat Arthur on November 27.”

Promoter Mick Hennessy said: “Styles make fights and with two explosive warriors such as Abraham and Carl going at it, this will be a fight-of-the-year candidate. It will be a true battle and I have no doubts that Carl will emerge victorious.”

Abraham’s promoter Kalle Sauerland holds a different view. “We have respect for Carl Froch, but I cannot wait for Arthur to give him a proper beating,” Sauerland said. “It will be a spectacular evening for the fans not just in Helsinki but all over the world. Arthur has basically been training since April and he cannot wait to finally get into the ring with Froch. It will be an explosive encounter, and mark my words, Arthur will be the new WBC Super Middleweight Champion on November 27.”
