PROVIDENCE (Oct. 14, 2010) – IBO Middleweight Champion “The Pride of Providence” Peter Manfredo Jr. returns to his roots November 12, headlining “Homecoming King” in a 10-round, non-title fight at the Twin River Event Center in Lincoln, Rhode Island.

“Homecoming King” is presented by Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment and Sports, Inc (CES), in association with Twin River and DiBella Entertainment.

Manfredo (35-6, 19 KOs), who will fight Colombian champion Jhon Berrio (15-7, 11 KOs), hasn’t fought in his native Rhode Island in two years. The star of The Contender, Season I reality television series has a 16-1 (10 KOs) pro record in Rhode Island, including 3-0 (3 KOs) at Twin River.

“It’s always a major event when Peter fights at home,” CES president Jimmy Burchfield said. “Peter started and developed his career with CES and we’re thrilled to have him headlining our November 12th card. He remains one of the most popular fighters in the world from his days with The Contender. As a reigning world champion, I expect his fans to turn out in force like they always have in the past. This is a very important fight for us because when Wilfredo Vazquez Sr won his world title, the WBA Jr. Featherweight title, we had the champion Jorge Perez. We did the fight because Jorge had beaten Wilfredo Sr. in Los Angeles 3 years earlier in a 10-round decision. Vazquez came to train in Mexico City for that fight and he was a tiger. Now after all these years I come to fight his son who is a world champion and we bring the challenger Ivan Hernandez to the fight. He is in great shape and we will have a great fight.

IVAN “CHOKO” HERNANDEZ: Thanks for the opportunity and thanks for letting me do what I like. And after you, I will take care of all the Mexicans that come in my way. I am tired of this. The Mexican fighters are not giving me the respect that I deserve. I am a World Champion for a reason.

WILFREDO VAZQUEZ JR (after calming down): I love fighting in Kissimmee. These are the people that believed in me right from the start. Now I am very motivated, more than before. Mexicans are good boxers and he is a good boxer and I won’t take anything away from him.

MCJOE ARROYO: I am real happy to be able to fight on this card where Wilfredo Vazquez will be making the first defense of his world title. I made my pro debut when Wilfredo fought for the title in Puerto Rico on February 27 and its very exciting to be doing it here again in Kissimmee.

‘Cage of Horrors’ MMA show stacked from top to bottom

Almeida-Strauss headlines CES Pro-Am MMA show Oct. 22 at Foxwoods

MASHANTUCKET, CT (Oct. 13, 2010) – “Cage of Horrors,” presented by Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Sports and Entertainment, Inc. (CES), in association with Foxwoods Resort Casino, will feature a stacked lineup from top to bottom October 22 at Fox Theater.

The “Cage of Horrors” pro-am MMA show is headlined by the CESMMA Lightweight Championship fight between undefeated Brazilian sensation Magno Almeida (5-0-0) and veteran Daniel Straus (14-2-0).

Last month in the first sanctioned MMA match ever held in Rhode Island, Almeida upset Mike “The Beast” Campbell (8-3-0) by first-round tap-out, while NAAFS titlist Strauss rides a 10-fight win streak into Foxwoods.

The co-feature is a rematch between controversial winner Luis “Rockstar” Felix (5-5-0), fighting out of Cranston (RI) and Boston lightweight Jim Dechaves (3-3-0). All fights on the card will be contested at three, 5-minute rounds, excluding the five, 5-minute round match in the main event.

Heath to tangle with Teixeira: Two of MFC’s best strikers set to explode at Bragging Rights

Two fighters with eyes on championship gold will clash in what promises to be an explosive light heavyweight matchup on the main card of the Maximum Fighting Championship’s MFC 27: Bragging Rights.

Riding an eight-fight winning streak into his MFC debut, Brazilian striker Glover Teixeira (10-2) will square-off against heavy-hitting American crowd-pleaser David Heath (16-6) on the HDNet Fights-televised lineup slated for Friday, November 12 at the River Cree Resort and Casino, just outside Edmonton, Alberta.

Heath, who has just signed a new and exclusive three-fight deal with the MFC, has become one of the organization’s most popular figures for his all-out aggressive style. He further endeared himself to the fans at MFC 26 when, in his first fight in the middleweight ranks, the Tulsa, Oklahoma, product ferociously knocked out Solomon Hutcherson with a Superman punch early in the second round. That feat earned Heath the Knockout of the Night honor and solidified his position as one of the organization’s most action-oriented fighters. Heath had previously shared the MFC’s 2009 Fight of the Year with Mike Nickels.

The 34-year-old has earned two other wins under the MFC/Heat XC banners, including a first-round submission via guillotine choke over former light heavyweight champion Roger Hollett at MFC 20. Eight of Heath’s 16 career wins have come by way of knockout.

Teixeira, a former training partner of Chuck Liddell’s at The Pit under coach John Hackleman, is a proven knockout artist with eight of his 10 career wins coming by knockout, and all of those stoppages coming before the end of Round 2. Included in Teixeira’s list of impressive knockouts is a finish of Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou in only 1:41 and a destruction of Jorge Oliveira that lasted a mere five seconds. In his only victory that went the distance, the Sobralia, Brazil, native earned a unanimous decision over veteran Matt Horwich.

Though obviously a well-reputed striker, Teixeira has an accomplished pedigree in submission grappling as well. The 31-year-old is a former Brazilian ADCC trials winner and has competed under submission wrestling rules against the likes of Jeff Monson and Brandon Vera.

The Heath/Teixeira matchup further adds to an already stacked card for MFC 27: Bragging Rights which features a welterweight title fight between Douglas “The Phenom” Lima and Jesse Juarez. Other bouts scheduled for the televised main card of MFC 27 include:

Dwayne Lewis vs. Razak Al-Hassan, light heavyweight

Ryan Ford vs. Pete Spratt, welterweight

Kajan Johnson vs. Orestes Betran, lightweight

The 6-foot-4, 31-year-old Silva (14-2), of Coconut Creek, Fla., by way of Brazil, is one of the most talked-about and feared fighters in MMA. His freakish size is matched with brute strength, startling speed, incredible agility and quickness and brutal ground and pound skills. Factor in that he is also surprisingly nimble-footed and effectively combines Shotokan Karate and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and you seemingly have all of the ingredients of a future superstar.

Silva has won seven of his last eight starts, including a decisive, lopsided decision over former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei “The Pitbull” Arlovski in his most recent outing last May 15. Silva’s lone loss since December 2006 came when he was narrowly outpointed by fellow Brazilian, and Fedor conqueror, Fabricio Werdum, on Nov.7, 2009. After an early onslaught that included decking Werdum and having him in serious trouble, Werdum rallied to eke out a decision by the scores of 29-28 three times.

“I want to fight and I’ll fight whoever they put in front of me,’’ Silva said. “My goal is to be the best and fight for a world title.’’

Overeem (28-23), of Amsterdam, The Netherlands, is a fierce, dangerous striker who has won his last two fights in a combined time of 47 seconds. The 6-foot-3, 34-year-old Dutch Destroyer scored a 40-second KO (knee) over Catalin Zmarandescu last May 21. In his outing before last, the previous April 17, a head kick finished off Tengiz Tedoradze seven seconds after the opening bell.

Overeem has several notable victories, including a 0:56, first-round submission over all-time great Randy “The Natural” Couture and a 2:19, first-round submission over Sobral. Overeem has only gone the distance twice in a 53-fight career.

A member of Team Golden Glory like his brother, Overeem is a four-time winner in PRIDE Fighting Championship competition. He’ll be making his debut for STRIKEFORCE after signing with the San Jose, Calif.-based promotion in June.

Crowd favorite and St. Louis native, welterweight Jesse Finney, will take on a foe to be announced in the top non-televised undercard scrap.

Doors at Scottrade Center will open for the event at 6 p.m. CT. The first preliminary bout will begin at 6:30 p.m. and the first SHOWTIME televised main card fight will begin at 9 p.m.
