NEW YORK (Sept. 24, 2010)–The Group Stage 3 matchups in the Super Six World Boxing Classic, the unprecedented boxing tournament from SHOWTIME Sports® featuring the world’s best super middleweights, have been rescheduled for November 27, it was announced today by Ken Hershman, Executive Vice President and General Manager for sports programming on the network.

The matchup between breakout American stars and friends, Andre Ward and Andre Dirrell, will headline the SHOWTIME® telecast on Saturday, Nov. 27, live at 9p.m. ET/PT. Ward vs. Dirrell, one of the most talked about matchups of the year, will be contested for Ward’s WBA championship and the newly vacated WBC belt, adding yet another dramatic layer to an already captivating fight.

Ward has already locked up his Semifinal berth, but will be protecting his title and undefeated professional record. Dirrell, conversely, needs a win to guarantee his place in the Semis. Dirrell conceivably could get in with two points but he would need help from fellow tournament competitors.

On the same night, Saturday, Nov. 27 from Hartwall Areena in Helsinki, Finland, Arthur Abraham will meet former WBC titlist Carl Froch for their pivotal Group Stage 3 fight. Promoters Kalle Sauerland and Mick Hennessy are working with the Hartwell Areena to finalize details for the event. This bout, matching arguably the two toughest and most aggressive punchers in the Super Six, has been rescheduled from Oct. 2 due to a back injury to Froch.

Allan Green, whose Group Stage 3 bout with Mikkel Kessler was waylaid when Kessler withdrew from competition with an eye injury, has left the perennial contender without an opponent. A decision on Green’s Group Stage 3 bout is expected in the coming days.

The third and final Group Stage will complete the round-robin portion of the tournament and determine the four fighters who will advance to the single-elimination Semifinals. Through the first two Stages, the WBA world champion Ward is the only fighter to have secured a berth in the Semis. No fighter has been eliminated from contention creating a virtual win-or-go-home scenario for each of the men.

Hershman said, “We have asked these fighters to challenge themselves against the best fighters in the world; not in one mega-fight, but in a consecutive series of career defining fights. Injuries and delays are inevitable. However, each one of them has accepted the challenge and brought a level of intensity to the ring that, in my estimation, is unmatched in all of sports.

“We are still on pace to complete the tournament in 2011, at which time we will have delivered to boxing fans around the world a number of the most compelling and meaningful matches in the sport.

“So, the drama continues with all the fighters still alive heading to Group Stage 3. I couldn’t have scripted this any better.”

SKELTON: I’M ALIVE AND KICKING FOR PRIZEFIGHTER

Few tickets remain as Reading fighter prepares to draw on Kickboxing background at York Hall.

Matt Skelton has vowed to make his experience count when he enters the Prizefighter Heavyweights IV at York Hall on Saturday 9 October – with Kickboxing his secret weapon.

At 43 years of age the Reading fighter is the oldest man on the bill in the 14th outing of Barry Hearn’s eight-man, one night tournament live on Sky Sports, but Skelton says he will draw on his experience from his successful Kickboxing career to cope with the stop-start frenetic paced night of action in East London – with only a limited number of tickets available for what promises to be an explosive night.

“It’s a bit of a different concept to what I am used to fighting in the last four or five years with the three rounds then the break,” said Skelton. “But I used to do that in Japan in a similar way with Kickboxing because there were a lot of tournaments that were like that, and even though it was a long while ago, I can still remember how to cope with that so I’ll be using that on the night.

“Training is going really well, been sparring great and preparation is going well comparatively speaking – You have to put your foot on the gas from the first bell in Prizefighter which is why it is so exciting to watch and I’m really looking forward to the night.”

Skelton returns to the a happy-hunting ground after he stopped a three fight losing streak with a comfortable fifth round knock-out of journeyman Lee Swaby at York Hall in July, having lost tough fights in Germany against Bulgaria’s hot prospect Kubrat Pulev (January) and undefeated Italian Francesco Pieneta (September 2009) and been knocked out by Martin Rogan in Birmingham in a failed defence of his Commonwealth title in February 2009.

A World title fight defeat and a European title win preceded those bouts and Skelton admits that following the hat-trick of defeats he was close to quitting, but that he has rediscovered his hunger and is ready to show that and bank the £32,000 winner’s cheque.

“After my last fight when I got knocked out in Germany, I made a conscious decision to call it a day and not fight anymore as I was a bit disillusioned with the way things were going,” said Skelton. It was really a chance meeting that started the possibility of me fighting again and I thought yeah, let’s give it a go. I am enjoying it, still loving the training and that’s the real challenge as there’s a danger you can lose that hunger and that’s when you can slacken off in the gym.

“I didn’t think the [Lee Swaby] fight was going to go ahead because I was meant to fighting Carl Baker but that fell through – then I was told Lee had taken it on the Tuesday of the fight so it was all a bit late notice, but I had to get back in the ring in order to do Prizefighter. I wouldn’t gauge my capabilities from that win though as if I hadn’t stopped him people would have said ‘Matt hasn’t got it anymore’ and when I did they just said ‘well you should’ but it was a good workout.”

Skelton is joined in the bottom half of the drawer by old foe Michael Sprott – a man he has defeated in their two previous meetings. Sprott has to see off Prizefighter Heavyweights III semi-finalist Danny Hughes in his quarter-final match while Skelton faces Hammersmith hitter Ali Adams in his opening bout – and while Skelton remained professional to say he was focused on Adams, he did allow the prospect of a mouth-watering clash with Sprott to cross his mind.

“We’ve fought twice before and he’s a very good opponent who will be coming into Prizefighter on the back of a good performance against Audley Harrison,” said Skelton. “He’s a very good fighter so he’s always going to be very dangerous on the night but I cannot think about anything other than my first fight against Adams. Obviously I want to progress through the rounds and lift the trophy and a meeting with Sprott would be a highlight of the night for sure. Our last fight wasn’t the best, the problem sometimes with fighting the same man twice is that you get to know each other too well and it’s not a nice fight for the fans to watch. But I know he will always comes to fight and should we both get to the semi-finals it will be a great match-up.”

The winner of Prizefighter Heavyweights IV will inevitably be linked to a big title shot after Harrison went from lifting the trophy to landing a World title fight with David Haye in November. And while Skelton says he’s not ready to call it a day just yet, he’s keeping his feet firmly on the ground when it comes to his future after Prizefighter.

“I really won’t allow myself to get too drawn into what could happen after Prizefighter as it is such a true cliché that you have to take the night one fight at a time on the night,” said Skelton. “I’m a realist though – Audley also has the fact that he’s an Olympian too which is a rare thing and he’s a big box office draw. When I fought over in Germany it was one of those things where it was very much under their terms and it wasn’t really in my favour at all – but when you get offered a title fight you have got to take it. In some ways I shouldn’t have taken the fight against Martin Rogan so soon, as there was a lot going on in my personal life and people close to me were telling me not to take the fight but I did. So I’m not looking long-term as my age is against but you have to remember that I only turned professional at 36 so I’ve got into the game very late in my life really – I will take it one fight at a time and while I am still enjoying it and can still get myself into the gym in the morning I will keep on going.”

Undefeated Archie Ray Marquez Meets

NEW YORK (Sept. 23, 2010) – Two fighters coming off huge wins and riding impressive winning streaks will meet in an all-important stepping-stone matchup in a 12-round junior welterweight main event on ShoBox: The New Generation on Friday, Oct. 1, LIVE on SHOWTIME® (11:45 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast).

Current USBA light welterweight champion, Tim “The Pit Bull” Coleman (17-1-1, 4 KOs) of Baltimore, Md., takes on two-time Venezuelan Olympian Patrick “El Elegante” Lopez (20-2, 12 KOs) at the Chumash Casino Resort in Santa Ynez, Calif. In the co-feature, undefeated Archie Ray Marquez (9-0, 1 ND, 6 KOs) of Albuquerque, N.M., faces off against Juan “Chago” Santiago (13-4-1, 8 KOs) of Denver, Colo., in an eight-round lightweight bout.

Coleman, 26, is coming off a 12-round decision win against former world title challenger and hometown favorite Mike Arnaoutis in New York in his last fight on Dec. 3, 2009. He has won three fights in a row since his only loss in October, 2008. The steady southpaw Lopez, 33, was impressive in his third-round TKO win against previously undefeated prospect Prenice Brewer in his last fight on Aug. 6.

“Coleman-Lopez is a good boxer-puncher matchup, and it’s coming at the right time,” SHOWTIME expert analyst Steve Farhood said. “Coleman is on the rise. This fight has real meaning as a crossroads matchup and the winner is going to be in commanding position to take the next step.”

The fifth-year pro Coleman is currently ranked No. 15 in the IBF and No. 18 in the WBC at 140 pounds and will be making the first defense of his USBA light welterweight title. He has been working with famed trainer Roger Mayweather in Las Vegas.

Coleman was reluctant to lavish praise on Lopez. He said, “I guess [Lopez] is a strong guy. He went to the Olympics twice. I don’t know; I feel like if I lived in Venezuela, I would have [gone] to the Olympics twice, too.”

Coleman’s only loss came on ShoBox on Oct. 3, 2008, against undefeated prospect James De la Rosa.

Lopez, also a five-year pro, honed his skills in the amateur ranks where he had 280 fights. He competed in the 2000 and 2004 Olympics and won a gold medal at the Pan American Games in 2003, beating Lamont Peterson in the quarterfinals. He is currently ranked No. 10 in the WBA at 140 pounds.

Lopez, who currently resides in Londonderry, N.H., has won five fights in a row since his last loss in April, 2009.

“I saw Tim Coleman fight Mike Arnaoutis,” Lopez’s manager and trainer Julio Pena said. “I have a lot of respect for every fighter. I know that he’s being trained by Roger Mayweather, which is pretty good. It makes me feel like I really want to work harder for this one because of all the respect we have for the Mayweather people. But at the end of the night, it’s not the trainers – it’s the fighters.”

The co-feature pits the unbeaten Marquez against Santiago in a match that Farhood says he’s looking forward to. “Marquez-Santiago is also a boxer-puncher type match,” he said. “Santiago proved his toughness on ShoBox against Vernon Paris, and Marquez will be looking to do what he does so well –moving and changing angles. This fight will be a very interesting contrast in styles.”

ShoBox fans last got a look at Marquez on Jan. 29, 2010, in his hometown of Albuquerque where he won an eight-round unanimous decision against Derrick Campos in a dominating performance and his biggest win to date.

Known for speed and versatility, Marquez always comes into fights in top condition and like Lopez, has a strong amateur background.

“I’d say I’m a boxer-puncher,” Marquez said. “Whatever they bring, I can adjust to it. I can jab and move around, use a lot of angles, and sometimes I go forward. It all depends what the fighter brings to me.”

Marquez, 22, is also familiar with the surroundings at Chumash as he fought there on Dec. 4, 2009, winning a six-round majority decision against Andres Ledesma.

Santiago, 25, has fought 12 times in his home state of Colorado and has some nice upset wins against the likes of previously undefeated Washington, D.C. prospect Ty Barnett (first round) and a seven-round unanimous decision against previously undefeated Jose Morales.

In his last fight on June 26, in Sheridan, Colo., he knocked out Donaldo Holguin. In his previous loss on ShoBox on May 14, he lost an eight-round split decision against Vernon Paris at Chumash.

The event is promoted by Gary Shaw Productions, LLC.

(Sept. 22, 2010) – Integrated Sports Media announced today that it will distribute the October 16th “The Rising Son Returns” Pay-Per-View event, featuring Boricua star Wilfredo “WV2” Vazquez, Jr. in his second WBO Junior Featherweight title defense, live in the United States from Silver Sports Arena in Kissimmee, Florida.

The 25-year-old Vazquez captured the WBO 122-pound division crown this past February, stopping Marvin Sonsona (14-0-1) in the fourth round, followed last May by a 10th-round TKO win against No. 1 contender Zsolt Bedak (15-0) in Wilfredo’s first title defense. WHAT: The fighters will participate in a press conference on Monday, Sept. 27, to announce the mega-STRIKEFORCE event on Saturday, Dec. 4, at Scottrade Center in St. Louis. The press conference is open to the public. An autograph signing session for fans will take place immediately following the press conference formalities.

The 48-year-old Walker, the 1982 Heisman Trophy winner and two-time NFL Pro Bowl competitor, is undefeated at 1-0 in his latest athletic endeavor – MMA. A 1999 College Hall of Fame inductee who was selected to Sports Illustrated’s NCAA All-Century Team that year, the 6-foot-1, 220 pound Walker already holds a fifth degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do and boasts additional training in the combat disciplines of Muay Thai and Kenpo.

A two-time U.S. Olympic wrestling team member (‘92, ‘96), Henderson is the only fighter in the sport’s history to simultaneously hold two different titles in two different weight classes (welterweight and heavyweight) for a major fight promotion (PRIDE Fighting Championships). A former UFC star, Henderson is one of the most decorated fighters in MMA history.

Sobral, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, is coming off a unanimous decision victory over knockout artist Robbie Lawler last June 16 at STRIKEFORCE: Los Angeles.

Rutger’s Asst. CH. John Leonardis is ready for the Campaign, Talks to TDR TV

John Leonardis has been with Rutgers head coach Scott Goodale since his first day “On the Banks” and has played a vital role in the resurgence of the program.

He helped guide the Scarlet Knights to a 50-19-1 record during his three years at RU. Leonardis helped make an immediate impact on the recruiting trail as their first recruiting class was ranked nationally by W.I.N. Magazine (No. 3) and InterMat (No. 4).

During Leonardis’ tenure, 12 RU wrestlers have earned NCAA bids and 14 Scarlet Knights have placed at the EIWA Championships.

Last season, Leonardis helped Rutgers to a No. 22 finish in the final 2009-10 NWCA/USA Today Division I Team Coaches Poll after posting a 19-5-1 record. Seven Scarlet Knights earned NCAA bids, the most since 1960. The No. 22 ranking is the highest in school history.

The Scarlet Knights put together a 15-match unbeaten streak from early December to late February which was the longest streak in school history.

Leonardis was a three year varsity wrestling letter winner at Lehigh before graduating in 1997. He was an EIWA Champion in 1996 in the 190-pound weight class. The Sea Girt, N.J. native played football and wrestled for Blair Academy in Blairstown, N.J. His senior year he was a captain for both wrestling and football, leading each program to a State Championship during his wrestling career.

Leonardis was a four-time National Prep place winner and champion and an Amateur Wrestling News All-American. On the coaching front, Leonardis has extensive experience. For six years (2000-06), he compiled a .720 winning percentage as the head coach at Peddie School in Hightstown, N.J. Leonardis-coached teams placed in the top-five of the National Prep Championships five times. He coached 32 National Prep Place winners and four Junior National All-Americans.

The fourth-year assistant coach also worked as the New Jersey Wrestling Federation Coach from 1997 to 2007, receiving Coach of the Year honors three times from the Trenton Times. He personally trained three Junior National champions, two NCAA Division I National Champions and multiple All-Americans.
