‘Last Man Standing’ show Oct. 2 at Foxwoods Resort Casino

MASHANTUCKET, Conn. (Sept. 22, 2010) – WBA No. 6 rated light heavyweight contender Joey “K.O. Kid” Spina must get past his respectful friendship with his next opponent, former multi-world title challenger “Sucra” Ray Oliveira, as well as fight at a lighter weight than normal in order to win the pivotal Oct. 2 match-up, which headlines the “Last Man Standing” card in Fox Theater at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Conn.

“Last Man Standing” is being presented by Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment and Sports, Inc. (CES), in association with Foxwoods Resort Casino. Spina-Oliveira is being fought at the 168-pound super middleweight limit.

Spina (25-1-2, 17 KOs), fighting out of Providence, puts his undefeated Foxwoods record (6-0, 5 KOs) on the line, fighting at Fox Theater for the first time since his signature victory to date in 2006 against Jesse Brinkley, former star of The Contender, Season One television reality show. Spina stopped Jesse Brinkley with a vicious body shot in the 11th round of a fight Joey trailed so badly he needed a knockout to win. Brinkley is now preparing to challenge IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute for the world title Oct. 15. Spina, who is coming off of a 10-round draw last October against former world champion Lou Del Valle, also holds wins against former world champion Carl Daniels, Jay Pina and Anwar Oshana.

“K.O. Kid” has been knocking on the door for a major fight, but he must defeat his CES stable mate, Oliveira, to get a big money and/or world title fight shot. “I love Ray,” Spina said. “He’s a good friend but this fight is strictly business. He was a great fighter in his time when he fought at 140 pounds, but I walk around at 210 and I’m just too big for him. I’m a big puncher and all of his pitter-patter punches won’t help him. I’m just going to keep coming at him.”

Oliveira, 41, has always been an action fighter in addition to being a 3-time world title challenger. The slick boxer and defensive genius from New Bedford (MA) is a former IBU welterweight, NABF light welterweight and New England lightweight champion. Foxwoods, though, hasn’t been a friendly house for “Sucra,” who is making a comeback to finish his career with 50 pro wins, needing only three more. He has won six of 14 fights with one draw at Foxwoods, including a pair of world title-fight losses there to Jake Rodriguez and Zack Padilla. Oliveira did defeat former world champion Vince Phillips at Foxwoods in 2000. He also holds victories against former world titlist Charles Murray (twice), as well as Saul Duran, Vivian Harris, and Tracy Spann, and he’s also been in against world champions Ricky Hatton and the late Vernon Forrest.

New England super middleweight champion Vladine “Mr. Providence” Biosse (8-0, 4 KOs), a former University of Rhode Island football player, has been added to the “Last Man Standing” card in the 6-round co-feature against upset specialist Ariel “Iron” Espinal (8-15-3, 4 KOs) in a non-title fight.

USA Judo Coach Jimmy Pedro on Kayla Harrison and Olympic Dreams

(Tokyo, Japan) – On Thursday, 20-year-old Kayla Harrison (Wakefield, Mass. / NYAC / USA Judo National Team FORCE) made history by becoming the first U.S. player to win a World Championship title since 1999.

USA Judo is pleased to announce that Harrison’s gold medal efforts will be rewarded with at least $21,000 in cash prize money.

After receiving her gold medal on Thursday, Harrison was presented with a check for $6,000 from the International Judo Federation.

In addition, USA Judo and the U.S. Olympic Committee each will award Harrison $5,000. The American Judo Fund also has pledged to contribute $5,000.

“Winning an Olympic Medal today in the Olympic Games in our sport is only possible through a thoughtful and well executed training plan. The financial commitment is staggering,” said USA Judo President Lance Nading (Denver, Colo.) “On average, medal hopefuls from around the world receive in excess of $100,000 per year in training, coaching, medical and living support expenses. That amount or more is just the financial commitment it takes to have a shot at winning.”

USA Judo is pleased to announce that any donations to Harrison’s prize fund, up to a maximum of $5,000 will be matched by USA Judo.

This effort was begun by the USA Judo Board of Directors, including Nading and Noboru Saito (Clawson, Mich.) who each contributed $100 to the fund. USA Judo CEO Jose H. Rodriguez (Colorado Springs, Colo.) also contributed $100.

Rodriguez continued: “Just as the USOC likes to say that it is Americans who financially support our Olympians, we would like to say that it is our American Judo community who also supports performances like Kayla’s gold medal. We will take $10 donations as well as $1,000 donations. It is not the amount that is most important, but the fact that we are rewarding performance as a nation and as a sport.”

Wisc. Hall of Famer Donnie Pritzlaff talks Induction, Schedule and Season to TDR

MADISON, Wis. — An exciting schedule awaits the University of Wisconsin wrestling team in 2010-11. The Badgers placed fourth at the 2010 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, tying for the best finish in school history, and looks to surpass that finish in 2011.

“It’s a great schedule,” Wisconsin head coach Barry Davis said. “It’s going to challenge our athletes and prepare our team for the NCAA tournament in March.”

In total, the Badgers host seven events at the Field House in Madison, Wis., including the annual Intrasquad Meet on Oct. 28.

“That Intrasquad meet is a great way to start the season,” Davis said. “It gives our fans the chance to see some of their favorite athletes. They get to watch not only guys like Andrew Howe and Tyler Graff but also some of the guys that they have never seen before. It gives our team a chance to compete early and the chance for our fans to see new faces.”

Wisconsin, which returns All-Americans Graff, Trevor Brandvold and Howe, a 2010 NCAA Division I Champion, competes in at least 16 team events this season and two unattached events.

After competing in two unattached competitions in early November, the Badgers travel to Raleigh, N.C. on Nov. 19 for its first dual meet against the University of North Carolina-Greensboro.

Wisconsin concludes the weekend on Nov. 21 in Chapel Hill, N.C., to compete in the Big 10/ACC Clash.

“I think that the Big Ten/ACC tournament will be an exciting event,” Davis said. “It’s a great way to match our two conferences up. It gives our teams the chance to go somewhere different. We haven’t been there for a while, and there is no doubt there will be a lot of competition at that tournament.”

The Badgers open the month of December in Las Vegas for the Cliff Keen Invite, an event where in 2009 both former Badger Kyle Ruschell and then-sophomore Howe claimed individual titles.

“The invite in Las Vegas is a great tournament every year,” Davis explained. “It has a lot of the top teams in the country. Out of the top 30 teams in the country, roughly at least 15 of those teams will be at that tournament which will be really great for us.”

Wisconsin hosts its first two home duals against Northern Iowa and Michigan on Dec. 11 and 12, respectively. Following its two-event homestead, UW competes in the Midlands Invite in Chicago Ill., to conclude 2010.

The Badgers open the new year at the National Wrestling Coaches Association National Duals in Cedar Falls, Iowa, Jan. 8-9 and opens the Big Ten season with Illinois a week later.

Wisconsin concludes regular Big Ten competition in East Lansing, Mich., with a dual against Michigan State on Feb. 20.

The Big Ten Championships are slated for March 5-6 in Evanston, Ill., and the 2011 NCAA Championships will take place March 17-19 in Philadelphia.

Donny Pritzlaff, a 2002 graduate of the University of Wisconsin, enters his fourth season as an assistant with the Badgers, but first year as associate head coach. Pritzlaff was elevated to the role of associate head coach during summer of 2009.

Pritzlaff works with UW’s middle weight wrestlers and helped Andrew Howe become a Big Ten champion and reach the NCAA finals at 165 lbs. as a true freshman during the 2008-09 season.

Prior to joining UW, Pritzlaff was an assistant coach at Hofstra for three years. In 2005-06, the Pride sent eight wrestlers to the NCAA championships and won their fifth-consecutive Colonial Athletic Association title.

As a Badger wrestler, Pritzlaff was a three-time Big Ten champion (1999-2001), a two-time NCAA champion (2000 and 2001) and a four-time All-American (once at 150 lbs., three times at 165 lbs.). His career winning percentage of .894 (135 wins, 16 losses) stands as the second best in program history while his 135 career wins ranks fourth.

Pritzlaff was a junior world champion in 1998 and was a member of the United States National Team in 2002-03. Following his graduation with a degree in sociology, the Lyndhurst, N.J., native served as a volunteer assistant at Wisconsin during the 2002-03 season. Pritzlaff won a bronze medal at the 2006 World Championships and finished his competitive wrestling career during the summer of 2008 after training for the 2008 Olympic Trials.

Pritzlaff currently lives in Madison with his wife Robin and daughter Adalena.

Michael Childs Named Davidson Assistant Wrestling Coach

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson head wrestling coach Bob Patnesky announced the addition of Michael Childs to the staff as an assistant wrestling coach Tuesday.

Childs, a four-year letter winner as a student-athlete at Drexel, brings a wide range of experiences to the Wildcats.

“Michael comes to us with a wealth of knowledge,” said Patnesky. “He has been around wrestling all of his life and is very excited for the opportunity to coach here. He will contribute to our program in a variety of ways.”

The Wayne, Pa. native spent six years as a high school head wrestling coach beginning in 2001. Childs began at Friends Select School in Philadelphia where he doubled participation rates and coached a wrestler to a top-12 finish at the National Prep Tournament. He then served as the head coach at Springfield Township H.S. in Erdenheim, Pa. for four years, where he increased participation rates and coached a wrestler to a fourth-place finish at the state championships.

Most recently, Childs was assisting at his high school alma mater, Radnor, where as a student he posted a 91-19 record and a top-eight finish at the state championships, and was a freestyle state champion and a two-time Keystone State Games Champion.

He spent the 2008-09 academic year at Penn State, where was a volunteer coach for the Nittany Lion Wrestling Club while serving as an academic tutor and mentor for student-athletes.

Childs gained international experience beginning in 2007, serving as the manager and head wrestling coach at the Grip House in Glasgow, Scotland, a Muay Thai/mixed martial arts gym. He oversaw daily operation of the gym and trained professional fighters from throughout the UK and Europe in wrestling.

Childs is the son of Jack Childs, who has been the head coach at Drexel for the past 35 years and has been inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Pennsylvania Chapter and the Pennsylvania Wrestling Hall of Fame. Michael competed for his father at Drexel, and graduated with a degree in psychology in 2003.

Childs is a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association and is currently pursuing a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist certification.
