ODU’s Steve Martin has a top ranked class, Team has a Bright Future Talks to TDR

Head Coach Steve Martin and the Old Dominion wrestling program has brought in its sixth consecutive Top 20 recruiting class as InterMat has released its 2010 rankings. The wrestling Monarchs rank No. 16 on this year’s list.

In the last six years, Martin has brought in four recruiting classes ranked in the Top 10 (2005, 2006, 2008, 2009) and two classes ranked just outside the Top 15 (No. 16 in both 2007 and 2010).

“The coaching staff is pleased to bring in a great group of talented young men both on and off the mat,” said Martin. “We are very excited to help these individuals obtain degrees and championships.”

Old Dominion is coming off a season where it won the CAA regular season title and produced three NCAA qualifiers. At the NCAA Tournament senior Chris Brown earn NCAA All-American status, ODU’s third straight year with an All-American.

The Monarchs graduated four seniors at years end, including three starters.

“We had a priority to fill many needs at several weight classes and we accomplished that goal with this class,” Martin explained. “It’s very important to compete against the Big 10 and Big 12 programs head-to-head for these athletes as we continue to grow into a national power. This group has goals of becoming NCAA Champions and All-Americans.”

SHOWTIME® TO RE-AIR DIAZ-NOONS I PRIOR TO LONG-AWAITED OCT. 9 REMATCH

NEW YORK (Sept. 21, 2010) – In anticipation of their must-see grudge rematch on Saturday, Oct. 9, SHOWTIME® will re-air the memorable first fight between Nick Diaz and KJ Noons as part of an hour-long, multi-fight highlight package on SHO 2 beginning Friday, Sept. 24, at 10 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).

The Diaz-Noons special, which features their original showdown along with three of Diaz’s past fights and three of Noons’ past fights, will also air on Tuesday, Sept. 28, at 10:10 p.m. ET/PT on SHO 2 immediately following an airing of Oscar-winning film The Hurt Locker. It will air again on Monday, Oct. 4, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on SHO2. The program will also be available On Demand beginning Sept. 24.

The first slugfest ended in bloody controversy when Noons won a disputed, first-round upset TKO over Diaz in a thrilling, give-and-take brawl, Nov. 7, 2007, on SHOWTIME. Both fighters have gone undefeated since their last meeting and bad blood between the brash fighters has only been growing.

Diaz-Noons II will be for Diaz’s STRIKEFORCE World Welterweight Title in the main event of a sensational fight card at HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif., which will also feature Sarah Kaufman defending her STRIKEFORCE Women’s Welterweight World Title against No. 1 contender Marloes Coenen.

The following Diaz and Noons fights, consisting of five knockouts and one submission, will also appear on the highlight video: Diaz vs. Thomas Denny (July 26, 2008), Diaz vs. Scott Smith (June 6, 2009), Diaz vs. Marius Zaromskis (Jan. 30, 2010), Noons vs. James Edson Berto (July 27, 2007), Noons vs. Yves Edwards (June 14, 2008) and Noons vs. Jorge Gurgel (Aug. 21, 2010).

125- The only returner at this weight class is Jr. Josh Rollins. A newcomer to the roster signing on with the Yellow Jackets and accompanying Rollins, is 4X NY State Finalist Kyle Crisafulli, who compiled a 210-15 career record in HS under Coach Gene Mills at Phoenix HS. Also, coming aboard the AIC Express is Mike Bradley. Bradley, a 2X VT State champion, wrestled his high school career under Coach Scott Legacy at Mt. Anthony. Crissafulli was nationally ranked by USA wrestling magazine for his weight class and Bradley was honorable mention by the same publication.

133-Andrew Liske, from CT, was a redshirt a year ago and now looks to start his college career. Coming aboard to challenge Liske are newcomers Aaron Smith, who is a transfer from Highline Community College, and 2X Juco All-American under coach Scott Norton; Zachary Ziobro, from RI, who is an Eastern Nationals champ; and Andrew Agoo, from FL, an AAU World Champ.

141- Chris Hoffman, from MD, went 15-6 for the Jackets as a freshman. Adding depth at the weight will be incoming freshman Sergio “Niko” Fernadez, who is an Arizona state placer. Also, at this weight class will be Anthony Gaito out of NJ, and MA state place winner Josue Guerra.

149- Newcomer, Andres Nanez from Germany, placed 3rd the last two years at the European Championships, and has the inside track to start. Also, excepted to compete for the spot is 2X state qualifier Matt Waggy from Olympic Heights, FL and transfer Arthur “Ray” Shaffer , from Pottstown, PA.

157- Marshall Giovannini is the potential starter at this weight class. He is a transfer from Highline Community College, and has two junior college All-American Certificates placing 4th and 2nd. Also, looking for time are RI state champion Zachary Audet, and Central High School local Frederick Bruce.

165- Ronnie Tetreault, a junior from Ludlow, MA, is going up a weight class for this up coming season. And 165 is the weight class where, two years ago, Mr. Tetreault placed third at the junior college nationals, then competing for Colby CC. Angel Mazara also returns for his sophomore year. Mazara is a tough customer whose season was cut short by injury, after winning a final wrestle-off match for Regionals. Also adding depth for the Yellow Jackets at this weight class will be freshman Ryan Parker (CT).

174- Jason Pagan, a senior, is looking for some closure from last season and for his career! Pagan got hot for the Yellow Jackets late last season, and rattled off thirteen wins in a row! Unfortunately, season-ending surgery kept Pagan from competing at our regional tournament. Also, back from a year lay off, is Vladimir Bereschenko from Russia. Bereschenko is a very decorated wrestler in his country, and might also see time at 165. Newcomer and CT State Champ Kyle Copes will also add a nice blend to the weight.

184- Yakov Bloch Sr from Israel had a 20-win season last year. Wausu Onibanjo, from NJ, is also a very exciting wrestler at the weight class. Who wants it?

197- Newcomer, Mike Ingalls, out of CT. a New England placer two years ago, did a prep year last year and was runnerup at the New England prep-school tournament.

285- Casey Hines from Starke, FL, is back for his sophomore campaign, and has grown into the weight. Further, sophomore Austin Morris from NY and newcomers Sean Mahoney (MA) and Raul Gonzalez (FL) will add needed heavy weight depth in the room.

AZ St’s Shawn Charles Releases Schedule, Ready for Season, Talks to TDR TV

TEMPE – Shawn Charles, the second-year head coach of the Arizona State University wrestling program, has announced the schedule his Sun Devils will face in the upcoming 2010-11 season, which features 11 duals, two dual tournaments and three individual tournaments. Those events will be used to prepare the Sun Devils for the final two competitions of the season, the Pac-10 Championships and the NCAA Championships.

ASU’s season gets underway on November 13 with two road duals in the state of Arizona as the Sun Devils travel to face Grand Canyon at 1 p.m. in Phoenix before heading north to Prescott for a 7 p.m. dual with Embry-Riddle. Those duals will mark the sixth time in program history (since 1962-63) that ASU has visited a pair of intrastate foes in the same season and the first since the 1980-81 season when the Sun Devils defeated Northern Arizona, 56-0, in Flagstaff before taking down Arizona in Tucson, 34-12.

After their opening day traveling the state, the Sun Devils will return home on November 18 to welcome its first of five visitors to Wells Fargo Arena as they play host to Oklahoma in a 7 p.m. dual. The Sun Devils will then travel to Fullerton, Calif., and compete in the Fullerton Open (November 20) before returning home to close the opening month of the season with their first Pac-10 dual as CS Fullerton comes to town on November 27 (time TBA).

The month of December remains unchanged for the Sun Devils as they will once again compete in a pair of tournaments in Nevada, starting with the Cliff Keen/Las Vegas Invitational in Las Vegas, Nev., on December 3-4 before returning to Reno for the Reno Tournament of Champions on December 19. Following the holiday break, the Sun Devils will jump back into dual competition with a home contest against Oklahoma State at 6 p.m. on January 2. Form there, ASU will travel to the Virginia Duals in Hampton, Va. (January 7-8) and the Lone Star Duals in Arlington, Texas (January 15) where their dual opponents will be named at a later date.

The final two duals of the month also are the final two home events for the Sun Devils as they play host to a pair of Pac-10 rivals. First up will be a dual with CS Bakersfield on High School Night, which is set for 7 p.m. on January 21. The following weekend, on January 30, ASU will play host to Cal Poly at 2 p.m. Prior to that dual, the program will recognize its departing seniors, including starters Anthony Robles and Ben Ashmore, among others.

February will see the Sun Devils become road warriors as they travel around for four duals and the first of two championship events. The first weekend of the month will bring a pair of duals against Big 12 opponents as ASU travels to face Nebraska on the 4th and Iowa State on the 6th. The meeting with Nebraska will be the first between the two schools since the 2003-04 season. The following weekend, the Sun Devils will close out the regular season with duals at Oregon State on the 11th and Stanford on the 13th.

Following a week off from competition, the Sun Devils will return to Corvallis, Ore., for the second time in 15 days as they will take part in the 2011 Pac-10 Championships that will be hosted by Oregon State on February 27. ASU has had success in Corvallis in the past as they won the 1987 and 1995 Pac-10 titles. From there, those that qualify from the Pac-10 tournament and through at-large selections will travel to Philadelphia, Pa., for the 2011 NCAA Championships on March 17-19.

Overall, all but the dual with Nebraska will be a rematch from last year. The last time ASU and NU met came during the 2003-04 season with the Huskers winning a 30-10 decision in Tempe. The Sun Devils also will look to maintain a strong hold on both intrastate schools and the Pac-10 Conference during the season. All-time, ASU is 57-9-0 against teams from the state of Arizona, including a 2-0 record last year with wins at home against GCU and ERAU, and stand 127-23-1 against all teams that are (or have been) in the Pac-10 after going 4-2 last year.

ODU’s James Nicholson, Ready for Season and the Top of the Box talks to TDR TV

NORFOLK,VA–Six ODU student athletes have been selected to the 2009-10 Virginia Sports Information Director’s Academic All-State Team. Rising senior James Nicholson (Wrestling),juniors Trian Iliadis (Men’s Basketball), Mairi Buchan (Women’s Basketball),along with recent graduates Elizaveta Moiseeva (Women’s Swimming & Diving), Steffen Rabben (Men’s Soccer) and Ashley Kellogg (Women’s Lacrosse) the 119 student-member squad.

James Nicholson was selected to the National Wrestling Coaches Association’s Division I National Academic Team for the third straight year. He was also named the Colonial Athletic Association’s Scholar Athlete of the Year for wrestling. The Des Moines, Iowa native compiled a sparkling 32-3 overall record this past season and was the CAA champion at 125-pounds for the third straight year. Nicholson ranked Seventh nationally and was the #7 seed at the 2010 NCAA Championships, going 2-2. He carries a 3.48 GPA in finance.

Moiseeva was the recipient of the ODU Jack Wilkins/James Howard Female Scholar Athlete of the Year. She was one of the Lady Monarchs top freestyle competitors. She registered ODU’s second best time this season in the 1,000 free of 10:46.93, and fourth best times in the 100 free of 53.56 and 200 free at 1:55.45. The native of Moscow, Russia graduated with a 3.93 grade point average in international studies.

Steffen Rabben, was the recipient of the ODU Jack Wilkins/James Howard Male Scholar Athlete of the Year. He scored five goals with two assists and had two game winning goals for the Monarchs last season. He is a former CAA Rookie of the Year and a second team All-CAA selection. Rabben, a native of Valdres, Norway graduated with a 3.66 grade point average in economics.

Trian Iliadis was named to the Colonial Athletic Association’s first team All-Academic squad this past season. He played in all 36 games for the Monarchs, averaging 3.1 points per game. Iliadias scored a Career high 13 points in ODU’s win over Charlotte and 11 in the Monarchs win over 11th ranked Georgetown. The Perth, Western Australian native was presented the CRC Press Chemistry Achievement award which is given to a chemistry or bio chemistry major with the highest average in chemistry 115N-116N sequence. He has a 3.84 GPA.

Lady Monarch basketball player Mairi Buchan averaged 4.8 points and 2.3 rebounds along with shooting 78 percent from the free throw line. She was named to the first team CAA All-Academic squad. Over the summer the Stirlingshire, Scotland native helped lead Great Britain’s under-20 national team to the European Championships. She carries a 3.97 GPA in pre-med and biology.

Ashley Kellogg was named second team All-CAA in 2010 and posted a team high 42 goals during her Senior season. The Downingtown, Pa. native ranked fourth in the CAA with 2.8 goals per game and ended her remarkable Lady Monarch career fourth all-time in both goals (127) and points (151). Kellogg Graduated with a 3.67 grade point average in physical education and exercise science.
