WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue wrestling team added Pete Rogers to its coaching staff on Thursday, naming him an assistant coach with the Boilermaker grapplers. Rogers comes to Purdue from Lakeland College, where he served as the Muskies’ head coach for nine years and vaulted them into the upper echelon of NCAA Division III Wrestling.

“I’m very excited to be a part of the Boilermaker wrestling family,” said Rogers. “I’ve seen great things happening at Purdue and I can’t wait to get in there and work with the guys.”

In his time at Lakeland, located in Sheboygan, Wis., Rogers took the Muskie program from one that could barely field a roster to a pair of NCAA Division III Top-30 finishes in 2009 and 2010. In the 2007-08 season, Rogers led the squad to its first-ever national ranking in addition to a 13-5-1 dual record, a Northern Wrestling Association (NWA) title and mentored just the second NCAA Championship qualifier in school history in Paul Hartt. The Muskies also posted a 5-0 record that season against the rival and talented Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

The following season, Rogers took Lakeland to a 21th-place finish at the NCAA Championships with Hartt and heavyweight standout Adam Sutter, and in 2010 Sutter became just the third All-America honoree in school history with a third-place showing at the national tournament as the Muskies placed 26th as a team.

Rogers is no stranger to the Big Ten Conference, having wrestled collegiately for Ohio State University from 1996-to-2000. A four-time varsity letterwinner, he built an 80-63 career mark for the Buckeyes, including a 20-4 mark in his senior campaign that included a spot as a team captain and a third-place showing at the Big Ten Championships. Rogers also led the team in pins as a junior and was named the Buckeyes’ Most Dedicated Wrestler as a senior.

A native of Oostburg, Wis., Rogers was an elite high school wrestler, posting a remarkable 145-1 prep record and a trio of Wisconsin State High School Championships. Among his collegiate recruiters was current Boilermaker head coach Scott Hinkel, who is excited at his second chance to make Rogers a part of the Purdue Wrestling family.

“We’re very excited about Pete joining the team,” said Hinkel. “He brings a wealth of experience to our program, not only in wrestling, but in coaching and in managing a program. He had the passion and competitiveness to take Lakeland from the bottom to the top, and we think he can bring that to our program and help us as we push to the upper half of the Big Ten and the NCAA.”

Rogers has a master’s degree in education from Lakeland and a bachelor’s degree in sport and leisure studies from Ohio State. He and his wife, Brandi, have two children, Isabella and Gabriel. Rogers will officially join the Boilermakers on Saturday, Sept. 11.

Nicklow-Kennedy Headlines “Baltimore Bad Boys” September 17!

Headlining this outstanding evening of boxing is an intriguing ten round middleweight contest between Free State rivals Jesse “The Beast” Nicklow of Baltimore and Windsor Mill’s “Vicious” Julius Kennedy.

Nicklow, 20-2-1 (7 KO’s), is coming off an entertaining ten round decision victory over prospect Scott Sigmon March 20 at the Du Burns Arena. The former amateur standout, who is also 1-0 as a mixed martial artist, previously won the hearts of boxing fans worldwide during his gutsy performance against elite rising star Fernando Guerrero.

Since dropping his pro debut, the crowd pleasing Kennedy won all seven of his bouts, including three by knockout. In March 2009, the fearless Kennedy entered the hometown of well regarded Aaron Pryor Jr., (12-1), and pulled out a gutsy six round majority decision. He has also been long awaiting the opportunity to share the squared circle with Nicklow, calling him out on multiple occasions during the last few years.

Nicklow and Kennedy will meet for the vacant WBF America’s and Maryland State Middleweight Championships.

Headlining the undercard is Catonsville, MD cruiserweight Steve “Show Stealer” Wheeler, 5-0 (4 KO’s). The wildly popular Wheeler is a former Maryland Gloves champion and will appear in six rounder
against an opponent to be named.

Highly touted and hard hitting Capitol Heights, MD native Thomas “KO” Snow, 12-1 (8 KO’s) returns to his home state for just the second time since 2007 to battle fellow Marylander Dwayne Martin, 2-1 (1 KO), of Laurel in a six round contest.

In bouts scheduled for six rounds, Baltimore’s Maxell “The General” Taylor makes his long awaited return to the ring against Mechanicsville, VA’s Francois Ambang and Jed Phipps of Baltimore takes on Chicago IL’s Theron Johnson.

In addition to the $35 general admission tickets, floor seats are available for $50 and individual VIP seats are $75. Reserved tables are priced at $500, while second row VIP and first row VIP tables are $750 and $1000 respectively.

Patrick McElligott’s Klitschko vs Peter Preview

At Frankfurt, Germany (ESPN3.com live, ESPN Deportes same-day tape, ESPN next-day tape): Wladimir Klitschko vs. Samuel Peter, rematch, 12 rounds, for Klitschko’s Ring/IBF/WBO heavyweight title.

It’s been five years since Wladimir Klitschko survived three knockdowns to win a unanimous decision over Samuel Peter. Since that fight, Klitschko has dominated each of the nine challengers that he has faced, with only one lasting all twelve rounds. His cautious, systematic manner of breaking his opponents down has earned the respect of the boxing community, but little recognition among the general sports fans.

In those same five years, Sam Peter has been at times exciting, at times impressive, and frequently disappointing in the ring. He has won ten fights, including two decisions over James Toney. However, he showed no desire to win in successive bouts against Vitali Klitschko and Eddie Chambers.

Peter has made quick work of four opponents in a row, although only one – Nagy Aguilera – had a victory over a former top contender. The shallowness of the current field of heavyweight contenders is definitely a factor in Sam’s securing this rematch at this time. Without question, if Peter enters the ring weighing less than 240 pounds, he has a solid chance of defeating any contender in the division. More, with his impressive punching power, he has the capacity to seriously hurt any heavyweight, including Wladimir.

The question is, can he put his punches together in a manner where he can deliver that power on September 11? As we saw five years ago, Sam will have to land more than one hard shot at a time, because Wladimir has the ability to get off the canvas – even three times – and still win a decision. Although Klitschko’s three loses are all by knockout, they came before Manny Steward taught him to relax in the ring. More, Steward is the best trainer for teaching tall fighters how to take full advantage of their height in the ring.

Years ago, when he was a rising prospect, Peter had an opportunity to be trained by Teddy Atlas. Sam’s stubborn streak resulted in this not happening, something that I believe reduced his chances of becoming a great heavyweight champion. It’s not only that Atlas insists upon discipline in those he trains now, but he understands the one technique that a shorter opponent simply must have in order to compete with either of the Klitschko brothers.

In Michael Arkush’s excellent book “The Fight of the Century,” about the March 8, 1971 Frazier vs Ali bout, he touches upon this. Before that epic battle, some were comparing Smokin’ Joe’s style to that of the great Rocky Marciano. Frazier noted that they were actually distinct: Marciano fought in a crouch, and often ducked his opponent’s punches; Frazier bobbed-and-weaved, much like Henry Armstrong.

Some other heavyweight champions had also bobbed-and-weaved. Jack Dempsey did against Jess Willard. One has to be in great condition to bob-and-weave effectively for many rounds; hence, by the time he fought Gene Tunney, Dempsey was reduced to ducking.

Floyd Patterson used a style of bobbing-and-weaving that was known as the “peek-a-boo.” His trainer, the legendary Cus D’Amato, also taught Jose Torres and Mike Tyson this style. It allows a fighter with fast hands to deliver extended combinations with full power and increased accuracy. (Those of us who live in the upstate New York area remember Cus, when Iron Mike was still an amateur, saying he finally found a heavyweight with Patterson’s speed and delivery, and with Liston’s power.)

There has been a common thread in Wladimir’s fights in recent years, when he has faced shorter opponents: they have had great difficulty in getting inside on him on a consistent basis. A few have made it inside a few times, and then been tied up. Klitschko’s physical strength then saps his opponents. Even as talented a boxer as Calvin Brock end up standing in front of Wladimir, looking at his head and shoulders, attempting to anticipate an opening. As a result, they eat his jab, a sure way to get beaten up for a few rounds, and then knocked out.

A shorter fighter has to bob-and-weave to get inside in a manner that allows them to land punches. When you bob-and-weave, you tend to watch your opponent’s feet and legs, not his shoulders and head. To counter this, Klitschko has to rely first upon his jab, but this allows one to get under his jab. Watch a Frazier or Tyson: they actually can come under and land their own jab, setting up their attack.

Next, Klitschko would be forced to commit to moving forward, pushing the opponent backwards (like Foreman vs Frazier), and risking throwing uppercuts. Neither Klitschko brother is gifted with a fast, effective uppercut. They tend to fight too stiffly, and in the heat of competition, throwing an uppercut places them at maximum risk.

For a big heavyweight, Sam Peter has surprisingly fast hands. He also has the ability to learn new techniques, as the second Toney fight showed. However, he is “top-heavy” in stature, which can create problems with balance if he attempted to bob-and-weave. It would have been to his advantage to have had Atlas training him years ago. I’ll be surprised if his trainers have made many adjustments in his approach to the rematch. So his best chance is to set a pace that Klitschko will have difficulty hanging with. But, in order to do that, Sam Peter will have to be in much better condition – both mentally and physically – than he has ever been in so far.

UNI’s Schwab Needs your Support at Nat’l Duals, NWCA’s Mike Moyer Talks to TDR

Mike Moyer of the NWCA is asking for your help and for your attendance at this years National Duals. The University of Northern Iowa and it’s 1st year head coach Doug Schwab have made a huge commitment to this event and all wrestling fans should be prepared to attend. All Hawkeye fans should attend as fans of the sport even in the absence of the University of Iowa. The future design of this event will change in the coming year but we as wrestling fans, for the betterment of the sport, should come out and support this edition.

Among those scheduled to attend and compete: the University of Minnesota, Cornell University, Oklahoma State, The Ohio State and many others from all divisions.

The University of Iowa wrestling program — defending NCAA Division I team champs — released its 2010-2011 schedule today… and what’s most noteworthy is what’s missing: the 2011 NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals.

A quick look at the list posted at the National Wrestling Coaches Association website of D1 teams that have confirmed their participation in the January 8-9, 2011 event at the UNI-Dome at the University of Northern Iowa, and Iowa is not on the list. The Hawkeyes have taken part in the National Duals going back to when Dan Gable was head coach (he retired in 1997).

Referring to what he called “a firestorm of criticism,” the Hawkeyes’ head wrestling coach Tom Brands addressed the issue in an audio interview with Scott Casber of Takedown Radio.

“We support Mike Moyer (president of NWCA) and the NWCA in their energy to change to a real National Duals,” said Brands. “Right now, it’s an invitational, and we’re not ready to commit to that kind of event.”

“I realize it’s a hot topic, and our absence is being discussed… I understand I’ve put Mike Moyer in a bind.”

The fifth-year Iowa coach said he had given the matter considerable thought, saying that the reason the upcoming season’s schedule was issued later than normal was because of this matter.

Brands did leave open the possibility that Iowa would travel 90 miles north to Cedar Falls to compete at the National Duals… if the team has earned a place among the top D1 teams in the nation in the weeks leading up to the early January event. However, according to Iowa’s schedule, the day before the National Duals kicks off Saturday morning, the Hawkeyes will be hosting Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville at Iowa City (January 7, 2011, time to be determined).

Other notable opponents on Iowa’s schedule: cross-state rivals Iowa State (at Iowa City) and Northern Iowa (at Cedar Falls), along with Big Ten rivals Ohio State, Indiana, Purdue, Michigan, Michigan State, and Penn State, among others.

According to the NWCA, D1 teams that have committed to the 2011 National Duals include Cornell University, ranked as the number one team in some preseason polls. Other programs expected to participate: Oklahoma State, Ohio State, and University of Minnesota.

In addition, Iowa will be participating in the 2010 Midlands, the post-Christmas tournament at Northwestern University.

Alexander: “Come Saturday I’ll Be The Champ And Barrett Will Be The Chump.”

Lightweight Mark ‘The Flash’ Alexander is just a few days away from the biggest fight of his life, and his first title challenge, against former English Super Featherweight Champion Ryan Barrett on the Steve Goodwin Promoted ‘It’s Personal’ double title event at York Hall, Bethnal Green, London, on Saturday the 11th September 2010.

The ever amiable Alexander, who rightly earned the title shot following his sensational four knockdown, in three rounds, stoppage victory over the highly touted Michael ‘Simply’ Devine back in April, took some time out to speak about the preparations for his showdown with Barrett, “I’m been getting some great work in the gym. My final sparring sessions with Freddie Turner and Ben Murphy were real wars.

Freddie’s a sharp fighter, each time we sparred he’s done exactly what I thought he’d do, make me work. He’s bigger than me, which is great for me, he’s sharp, super fit and a real talented fighter. Way out of Barrett’s class.

Sparring Ben on the other hand is like being in with a pit bull. He keeps coming forward, walks right through you. He’s real hard work. Probably the hardest fighter I’ve been in with. There’s no stopping him. Barrett in comparison will be a walk in the park.

Holding my own with Freddie and Ben is the best preparation I can possibly get. They both have full arsenals of punches, unlike Barrett, and they make each session a real war. They work me harder in six rounds than Barrett is capable of doing in ten.

I’ll be ready for anything Barrett has to offer. Freddie and Ben have skills Barrett can only dream of. I’m learning how to master a southpaw in the ring. I’ll not just be ready for him I’ll be ready to annihilate him.

It ain’t just Freddie and Ben, I have a great coach in Barry Smith he’s really putting me through the paces. He’s making me even stronger and sharper. He’s already proved how he can make me a heavy puncher. Devine’s the proof of that.

It’s great being at Ultrachem TKO Gym to prepare for this fight. Johnny Eames, Jimmy Tibbs, Brian Lawrence, they’re all great trainers. They gladly put their fighters in for sparring. They watch you when sparring and come over and give seriously good advice.

These guys have trained so many champions in their careers, it’s really great that they have taken the time to help me prepare. It makes you feel confident with what you are working on. I’m really grateful to all these people that take the time to help and advise me on what to do.

They’ve all done their stuff and now I’ve got to do mine. I’m fully focused, faster and stronger than I’ve ever been before. I’m ready for Barrett, I’ll end his career for once and for all.

One things for sure, come Saturday I’m going to be the Champ and Barrett will be the chump.”

Ryan Barrett versus Mark ‘The Flash’ Alexander, for the vacant International Masters Lightweight title, will headline the Goodwin Promotions ‘It’s Personal’ event at York Hall, Bethnal Green, London on Saturday the 11th September 2010.

Co-headline sees Ultrachem TKO Boxing Gym’s unbeaten Light Middleweight prospect Pat McAleese against the ultra tough Lee Noble. This fight also suits the event’s ‘It’s Personal’ billing as there’s no love lost between McAleese and Noble either.

According to the NWCA, D1 teams that have committed to the 2011 National Duals include Cornell University, ranked as the number one team in some preseason polls. Other programs expected to participate: Oklahoma State, Ohio State, and University of Minnesota.

In addition, Iowa will be participating in the 2010 Midlands, the post-Christmas tournament at Northwestern University.
