Biosse steps up to fight friend McCreedy on ESPN FNF

PROVIDENCE (June 22, 2010) – New England and EBA super middleweight champion “Irish” Joey McCreedy (11-4-2, 6 KOs), trained by “Irish” Micky Ward and Dicky Eklund, was having a problem finding a suitable opponent for his July 9th fight in the 8-round co-feature on “Let Freedom Ring” presented by Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment and Sports, Inc. (CES), at the Twin River Event Center in Lincoln, RI.
When his good friend and CES stable mate, undefeated Cape Verdean boxer Vladine Biosse (6-0, 4 KOs), found himself without an opponent due to an injury suffered by Chris Traietti, promoter Jimmy Burchfield asked both fighters and their representatives if they’d like to get it on in the ESPN FNF co-feature.
“I give both teams credit for stepping up and taking the fight,” an ecstatic Burchfield said. “This is going to be a great, action-packed fight. It’s a pick ‘em fight, exactly what kind of fight fans want to see. Real fighters fight, they don’t pick and choose opponents to build up their records. Joey and Vlad are real fighters and boxing fans all over are going to see that July 9.”
They’re both good athletes, too. McCreedy was a standout running back for Lowell High, while Biosse, a native of Cape Verde, was a member of the University of Rhode Island football team.
“Real fighters fight and fighting on national television is a great opportunity for both of us,” McCreedy explained. “That’s what we are – real fighters — and it’s a going to be a great fight, a throwback type of fight between two warriors. Vlad and I are friends. I love the guy, but this is business. We just have to put our friendship aside while we’re in the ring. We’ll both give it our best and may the best man win. I have a lot of respect for Vlad as a friend and fighter. I don’t think he’s fought anybody as tough as me. I’ve had more opportunities because I’ve been fighting longer than him. He hasn’t fought anybody with my power and skills. We going to share the national limelight fighting on ESPN and it’s going to be one of the best fights ESPN has had in a long time.”
McCreedy, like Ward when he fought Arturo Gatti for the first time, will throw out the ceremonial first pitch (7 PM) Friday night at a minor-league game between the Lowell Spinners, the rookie Class A affiliate for the Boston Red Sox, and Connecticut Tigers at LeLacheur Park in Lowell.
Biosse, who came to the United States from Cape Verde unable to speak a word of English, has become quite eloquent, as well as becoming a U.S. citizen. “This is a big fight and a great opportunity to showcase what I’ve been working so hard to improve on into 40 million homes on ESPN,” Providence resident Biosse commented. “It’s what I’ve worked for. Joey and I have been good friends since before I turned pro. We’re cool with the fight; no anger or grudges. We understand that we’re in the fight business and we’re going to war. I’m going to bring my best to win and I’m sure he is, too. I like him a lot as a friend and fighter. I respect his style.
“We both understand that we’re in the business of fighting – that’s what we do. A lot of fighters pick and choose, and dodge opponents. I figure if I’m going to be a good fighter, let’s prove it now. I work hard and I’m trained by one of the best, Orlondo Valles. One of the reasons I signed with Jimmy Burchfield and CES is because he’s a businessman who loves boxing. He promotes boxing the right way and isn’t afraid to put two of his good fighters into the ring against each other. I’m bringing my all and it’s going to be a great fight. Joey and I will still be friends after the last bell rings.”
NABO lightweight champion “Hammerin’” Hank Lundy (18-0-1, 10 KOs), now rated No. 7 by the World Boxing Association, makes his first title defense against challenger John John “The Hammer” Molina (20-1, 16 KOs) in the 10-round main event. Quincy (MA) welterweight Aleksandra Magdziak Lopes (2-1, 1 KO) will be out for revenge in a 6-round rematch against the only opponent to defeat her, Providence’s Kali Reis (2-0 1 KO), who won a hotly-contested 4-round decision in their first meeting.
Providence firefighter Eric Estrada makes his long-awaited pro debut in a 4-round match against cruiserweight Antonio Robertson (0-1). Estrada, whose brother is 2004 U.S. Olympian Jason “Big Six” Estrada, was perfect as an amateur with a 6-0 record, including victories in the New England Golden Gloves Tournament and Rocky Marciano Tournament.
Roxbury (MA) super middleweight Maceo Crowder (2-0, 1 KO), whose brother is 2008 U.S. Olympian Demetrius Andrade, meets pro-debuting Worcester (MA) mixed martial arts fighter Ralph Johnson.
Also slated to fight in 4-round bouts against opponents to be announced are Warwick (RI) super middleweight Keith Kozlin (5-1, 3 KOs), Woonsocket (RI) super middleweight Joe Gardner (4-1-1, 1 KO), Lincoln light welterweight Diego Pereira (4-0, 2 KOs), and Fall River (MA) middleweight Dustin Reinhold (1-1, 1 KO). GLEASON’S GYM HOSTING AMATEUR BOXING THIS SATURDAY

Gleason’s Gym continues the monthly boxing series this Saturday evening June 26, 2010.
The show will include amateur boxers that are part of our Monthly Boxing Series. The show will include JO, Novice, Senior and Master bouts. There will also be female bouts.
Chris Beckles will box Melissa Hayes in a 112 pound Masters bout to support her favorite charities: “Hands for Paws” and “Pets Alive.”
The weigh in will begin at 4:00PM and the first bout will begin at 6:00PM.
All our bouts are pre-matched. They are sanctioned by USABoxingMetro. All boxers must have their boxing book with them in order to participate.

Promo shoot “makes it more real” for June 30 hopefuls
The ten boxers lined-up for Prizefighter Super-Middleweights at York Hall, Bethnal Green on Wednesday June 30 live on Sky Sports began the countdown to the show with today’s promotional shoot at Sky Sports studios in London.
The eight starters on the night were joined by the two reserves for a number of promotional activities including Sky Sports interviews for the night and promotional videos and pictures, all within tantalising touching distance of the Prizefighter trophy which will go to the winner of the 13th edition on Barry Hearn’s eight-man, one night tournament, along with a cheque for £32,000.
“I’ve been laughing all day, I’m so excited – it’s been amazing coming down here to Sky it’s such a big thing for me and I’ve loved every minute of it,” said Maidenhead’s Patrick Mendy, who makes history as the youngest boxer to take part in Prizefighter at the age of 19. “It’s made it more real being here and I cannot wait to get into the ring now and show people what I can do.”
The contenders face the biggest night of their professional careers when they take to the famous York Hall ring, but some of them found some parts of the promotional day almost as daunting as a the boxing itself.
“It’s been a very good day – but I’m not sure about the make-up, I don’t really like girls who wear too much!” said Tony Salam, the Stoke Newington fighter who won the first public vote to take the final spot in the show.
“I’ve never been around this sort of press attention but I’ve enjoyed it, I won’t be telling the boys about the make-up, even though I could do with it!” added Jeff Evans, the unbeaten Pontypool boxer who is hoping to follow in the footsteps of Gavin Rees as a Welsh winner.
The conversation in the green room inevitably turned to the World Cup as the fighters waited their turn to face the cameras – and the pre-fight banter began in earnest.
“Tony has been talking about football and how Fabio Capello should sack John Terry and Wayne Rooney and put in a bunch of League One players! We’re like “are you crazy!?” So the banter has been pretty good in there – it’s been a laugh,” said English champion Paul David, the Sheffield-based fighter from Northampton.
“It’s been good to be around the boys like this too, you can get a bit of banter going while you are waiting around and if someone starts acting the big one, it’s something you can take into the ring on the night,” said Waltham Abbey’s Daniel Cadman. “You don’t know who you are going to be drawn against yet so you don’t wanting to be walking around growling as it might come back and bite you but they’re good lads.”
One man who has experienced the big occasion is Sam Horton, the Dudley fighter who took on James DeGale at Upton Park in May. “I’m used to it now after the DeGale fight so this feels natural already which can only be a good thing for me going into the night,” said the 24 year-old.

Del Valle of New York has a record of 36-6 with twenty-two knockouts
Del Valle won his first twenty-two fights before challenging and narrowly losing a unanimous decision to long reigning champ Virgil Hill. Four wins later, Del Valle put him back in position and this time captured the WBA Championship with a eighth round stoppage over Eddy Smulders (34-1.)
In Del Valle’s first defense, he scored a knock down on legendary pound for pound king Roy Jones Jr. but came up short as he dropped a unanimous decision.
It just took for fights for Del Valle to position himself for the WBA Title again and he fought to a draw against Bruno Girard in Girard’s homeland of France.
The two fought just eleven months later with Girard pulling out a close split decision victory.
Since that fight, the eighteen year veteran has gone 5-3-1 with his latest fight being a draw with Joey Spina (25-1-1) on October 31, 2009.
Diaz of the Dominican Republic won a Gold Medal at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China. Diaz has amassed a record of 5-0 with three knockouts as a professional.
Diaz has already fought in his native Dominican Republic, Russia, Germany and this fight will be his second in the United States.
In his last fight, Diaz scores a six round unanimous decision over Orlando Membreno on March 12th in the Dominican Republic.
Taylor of Edgewood Arsenal, Maryland is just nineteen years-old but has already compiled an impressive mark of 8-0 with seven big wins by way of knockout.
Taylor, who turned pro at eighteen, has scored two consecutive stoppages, which includes a third round stoppage over Ayi Bruce (6-1) on May 7th in Huntington, NY.
Also on the bill will be former world Junior Amateur champion, Joey Dawejko (3-0, 1 KO) of Philadelphia and he will take on William Miranda (1-0) of Allentown, PA in a Heavyweight bout scheduled for four rounds.
Israeli Jr. Welterweight Oz Goldenburg (1-0) will take on Travis Thompson (3-7-1, 2 KO’s) of Pottstown, PA in a bout scheduled for four rounds.

“Reno Xtreme Fights – The Legacy Continues” will feature top Mexican prospect Ulises “Archie” Solis (30-2, 21 KOs) vs. Eric Ortiz (32-10, 21 KOs) in a 10 round Jr. Flyweight bout. Solis is the IBF #1 contender and the fight against his fellow countryman Ortiz is a rematch of their 2006 world title fight in which Solis won by 9th round TKO.

A test for Brandon Gonzales
Undefeated middleweight prospect Brandon Gonzales 12-0, 9 KOs will be in a very tough fight against San Diego’s James Parison (12-1, 3 KOs). Gonzales, who tasted the canvas in his last fight, is looking to show that he is still at the top of the division after facing adversity in the ring. Gonzales vs. Parison is scheduled for 8 rounds.

Ruediger carries win streak, new-found respect into title bout

Lemoore, Calif. – It’s been over three years since Gabe Ruediger’s “The Ultimate Fighter” debacle on Spike TV that saw the rising mixed martial arts star dismissed from the show for weight issues.
Ruediger has put those days behind him, and since won six of eight bouts including five straight.
“It’s nice that people are starting to take notice of me again. I was kind of forgot about and written off because of how I was depicted on the show,” said the Rancho Cucamonga grappler, who will take on Lenny Lovato on Friday, July 9 for the Tachi Palace Fights vacant Lightweight Championship at the Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino in Lemoore, Calif.
“I was a fighter before I was on the show and all this has just propelled me to do more. Lovato is just another step up for me.”
Ruediger (16-5) defeated Dominique Robinson in February to earn a title shot.
“Things have been going really well for me lately,” Ruediger said. “A lot of people don’t realize that I had neck surgery and I was out for over a year. It’s been a slow process, but things are coming together for me.”
Things have been going well for Lovato as well. The Albuquerque, New Mexico fighter is a perfect 8-0 and coming off of a victory over Ultimate Fighting Championship veteran Nate Mohr (9-7).
“I wrestled for 17 years, but I’m not limited to just that,” Lovato said. “In my last fight against a UFC vet, I dropped Nate Mohr with a punch. And I’m a black belt under Eric Paulson. I think it’s a great matchup and Gabe is obviously good in jiu-jitsu and I have that wrestling, but we both like to stand as well.”
Lovato has finished seven of his eight fights, only going to a decision once.
“I really don’t know anything about (Lovato). I think he is like 8-0 or 10-0, from New Mexico and primarily a wrestler. I don’t know if he is conventional or a southpaw or how good he really is, because his competition hasn’t been that great,” Ruediger said.
“It’s hard to gauge him, but I’m really not concerned with what he is doing or what he does. I’m focused on myself and my training and I have every intention on putting a loss on that record.”

Meanwhile, Blackburn (15-11-1) has dropped two straight in the UFC after a 3-0 start on the world’s biggest stage.
In title fights, welterweight champ David Mitchell (10-0) of Santa Rosa, Calif. defends his belt against Lemoore, Calif.’s Poppies Martinez (18-6) and bantamweight title holder Cole Escovedo (16-4) of Fresno, Calif. defends against Oakdale, Calif.’s Michael McDonald (9-1).
Also, grappling master Bill Cooper of Santa Barbara, Calif. makes his MMA debut against UFC veteran David Kaplan (2-3) of Las Vegas, Nev. in a lightweight tilt; Olympic Silver Medalist Stephen Abas (1-0) of Fresno, Calif. makes his return to the Palace in a bantamweight bout with Lemoore, Calif.’s Joey DeLaCruz (1-0); Las Vegas, Nev. lightweight David Bollea (2-0), who is the nephew of wrestling superstar Hulk Hogan, takes on Visalia, Calif.’s Cody Gibson (3-0); and Coalinga, Calif. bantamweight Francisco Loredo (4-5) fights Soledad, Calif.’s Drew Bittner (3-0).
