Ian ‘Dappa’ Napa: I’m Ready To Get My Title Back

Thursday – It’s a beautiful sunny day in London, but here we are indoors, at the Ultrachem TKO Gym in Canning Town, East London, to watch former two-time British and European Bantamweight Champion Ian ‘Dappa” Napa going through his final training session before setting off to Peterlee, Tyne & Wear, where he will face Darlington’s Stuart Hall for the vacant British Bantamweight title.
Napa’s coach, Brian Lawrence warns us,”Napa’s focused, he’s so focused now that a bomb could go off and he wouldn’t miss a beat. I tell you I wouldn’t want to be Stuart Hall. As far as Napa’s concerned Hall stands between him and the rematch with McDonnell”
So, if we didn’t know it already, Napa is still fuming over losing his British title by a controversial split decision to Jamie McDonnell in January. Mind you that loss didn’t just cost Napa the British title, it also cost him a European title shot. To add insult to injury, McDonnell side stepped a rematch with Napa, by vacating the British title, and then went on to defeat Frenchman Jerome Arnould for the European title.
This explained why Instead of the usual chirpy, ever smiling Ian Napa we are used to, we get to watch his alter ego train. This Ian Napa is a serious all business like character dedicated to finely honing his immense boxing skills by beating the living hell out a huge Ringside heavy bag. No one utters a word, It’s clear he wants to get his work done, so we wait patiently.
Finally the wait is over, Napa has finished training and has his weight checked by the BBBofC official, who like us waited patiently for him to finish his extended session. The first questions are the obvious ones such as “How’s training been” and “are you ready for Hall” etc to which he answered politely with the ubiquitous fighters reply “I’m looking forward to the fight, I can’t wait until I get in there and get the win.”
After about ten minutes of stock questions and answers it was mentioned that Hall had been making comments that Napa’s time was past, and that it was now his time. The Napa smile came back with a vengeance as he replied, “Talk is cheap, you know what I mean, when we’re in the ring it’ll be my fists that’ll be doing my talking. I’m not bothered about what he’s got to say. I know when I get in there I know what I’ve got to do. He’ll have to take what I give out. All I know is I’m ready to get my title back”
When it was pointed out that Napa´s slick defensive style, often likened to that of Floyd Mayweather, can make his fights hard to score for the ringside judges, Napa quickly responded by saying, “Some of the judges should wake up, take my last fight. I don’t know what fight they were watching but it wasn’t the one I was in. In the round replays, Sky TV couldn’t find one where McDonnell had landed anything. It’s crazy I’m always involved in decisions like these where I’m getting robbed.
Anyway that was then, this is now. My main aim now is to get back the British title first. That’ll get me back on track for the European title and then ultimately going for a World title. I’m not letting anyone get in the way of my goal, not Hall, not McDonnell, not anyone.”
Ian ‘Dappa’ Napa versus Stuart Hall for the vacant BBBofC British Bantamweight title will headline the Frank Maloney promoted event at the Peterlee Leisure Centre in Peterlee, Tyne and Wear on Friday, 4th June. and will be screened live on Sky Sports.
ROBERT “THE GHOST” GUERRERO DOCUMENTARY

June 3, San Francisco – From the first time he put on a pair of boxing gloves at age 9, Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero always dreamed of becoming a world champion. Guerrero fulfilled that dream (and more) by becoming a three-time world champion in two weight divisions, but the road to the top wasn’t so smooth. Contract disputes, fighting opponents who tested positive for steroids and traveling overseas to do battle with champions in their own country were some of the difficult challenges Guerrero had to endure. Yet these obstacles were nothing compared to his wife’s ongoing fight with cancer. In November of 2007, Guerrero’s world was shattered when he got news that his wife Casey was diagnosed with Leukemia.
Guerrero, a true warrior, would continue fighting at the highest level, winning two world titles during this difficult time. In January of 2010, Casey needed a bone marrow transplant in order to help her overcome the disease. That March, Guerrero turned down a shot at a world title (and his biggest payday) to be by his wife’s side, a decision that inspired everyone who heard his story. Miraculously, Leukemia cells are now absent from Casey’s body after receiving bone marrow from a donor in Europe.

Pennsylvania based MMA promotion CPWC returns for its sixth installment this coming Friday.
Friday, June 4 both amateur and professional mixed martial artists will lay it all on the line once again as the Central Pennsylvania Warrior Challenge returns to the Lancaster County Convention Center in Lancaster, PA. With 18 fights on the card, fight fans are in for a night of non-stop action.
In what promises to be to be a night to remember, the organization’s sixth show will feature an appearance from former UFC champion and hall of famer Dan “the Beast” Severn.
While Severn will not be making a return to octagon action at CPWC 6, his appearance should help solidify the organization’s place in the mix of the state’s top promotions.

NEW YORK (June 2, 2010) – Can Scott “Hands Of Steel’’ Smith, aka “The Comeback Kid,’’ do it again?
On Saturday, June 26, at HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif., on SHOWTIME®, Smith will attempt to make it two consecutive victories over Cung Le in a middleweight (185 pounds) rematch of one of the most incredible Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) comeback victories of all-time.
The eagerly anticipated return bout between Smith (17-6), of Elk Grove, Calif., and Le (6-1), of San Jose, will take place on an already-stacked STRIKEFORCE and M-1 Global fight card that features the world’s No. 1 heavyweight and pound-for-pound MMA fighter, Fedor “The Last Emperor” Emelianenko (31-1),against two-time Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu world champion and top-ranked superstar Fabricio “Vai Cavalo” Werdum (13-4) in the main event.
The universally recognized No. 1 female fighter in MMA, Cris Cyborg will defend her STRIKEFORCE 145-pound belt against Jan Finney, marking the first time in history that both the No. 1 male and female fighters will compete on the same card.
In another featured fight, former STRIKEFORCE lightweight (155 pounds) champion Josh Thomson (16-3), of San Jose, will try and regain his winning ways against Pat “Bam Bam’’ Healy (23-15) of Portland, Ore. Thomson lost a five-round decision in his last start to Gilbert Melendez in one of the most wildly exciting, give-and-take slugfests of the year on Dec. 19, 2009, at HP Pavilion. Healy is coming off a well-deserved, unanimous three-round decision over Bryan Travers during a STRIKEFORCE Challengers event on May 21.

The hard-hitting, never-say-die Smith is no stranger to dramatic, stirring, come-from-behind victories. He rallied to knock out Benji Radach on April 1, 2009, at HP Pavilion and registered a highlight-reel second-round KO over the UFC’s Pete Sell on Nov. 11, 2006.
Smith, however, may have outdone himself with his courageous performance against Le, coming back from the brink of absolute defeat to triumph by third-round knockout last Dec. 19 at HP Pavilion.
Smith had taken a frightful beating for two-and-a-half-rounds as southpaw Le, making his first start in 21 months, totally dominated. The one-sided proceedings seemed over at least a couple of times as everything was going Le’s way. His trademark spinning back kicks were connecting with startling frequency and were knocking Smith around the cage.
At one point, while Smith was on the ground after getting dropped, Le seemed to throw more than 50 consecutive punches. He slammed Smith once.
But Smith, a proven finisher who has never turned down a challenge, summoned the energy and heart – again – to twice drop Le. After he connected twice on a downed Le, the referee stepped in and halted the exciting battle at 3:25.
“This was one helluva fight,’’ said Smith afterward. “He had me the first two-and-a-half rounds, but I’ve got a hard head. On the knockdowns, I faked the right and threw the left. Everyone always looks for my right, but the left hook is my best punch.
“It took me until the third round to close the gap on him, but once I did and he began to drop his hands, I could sense things were starting to go my way. That’s when I feinted with the right and landed the left. It never matters who I fight. I just want these types of tough fights.’’
Le, a former STRIKEFORCE middleweight champion who relinquished the belt to concentrate on an acting career, offered no excuses but has been clamoring for a rematch since.
“He got the best of me last time with a good punch,’’ Le said. “We both fought our hearts out that night, but I’ve wanted a chance to turn the tables on him since that fight ended and now my opportunity is here. I am very excited to fight a warrior like Scott again.
“The fans in San Jose and those watching on SHOWTIME are in for a great fight again between Smith and me and a great night of fights.’’
Thomson, who shut out Melendez across five rounds to capture the STRIKEFORCE world 155-pound belt on June 27, 2008, lost a rematch by the scores of 49-46 twice and 49-47.
Like Le, the popular Thomson was coming off a lengthy layoff. It was his first start before a paying audience in 15 months due to injuries (he broke his left leg twice during training).
But Thomson showed against Melendez that he’s healthy again and he is excited about a possible rubber match. First, however, he must get past Healy.
“I’m up for a third fight with Gilbert if that’s what STRIKEFORCE wants,’’ said Thomson, who had an eight-fight winning streak end last time out. “I know this is a fight the fans want to see again. But my sole focus now is on winning my next fight. I can’t concern myself with future fights.
“For me, the future is June 26 and beating Healy.’’
Healy has defeated quality opponents since turning pro in August 2001. He was impressive outpointing Travers (13-1 going in) by the scores of 30-27 and 29-28 twice. It was a rare points’ victory for the durable, well-conditioned wrestling specialist who has won more than half his fights via submission.
A winner of three in a row and five out of six outings, Healy is getting an opportunity against one of the fighters he most wanted to fight.
“’I’ll fight anyone but there are two guys in the 155-pound as far as I’m concerned and that’s Josh and Melendez,’’ Healy said. “A win over Thomson, then Melendez could be next for me.’’

Hot on the heels of the best Prizefighter yet, Matchroom Sport can announce the line-up for the next event – Prizefighter Super-Middleweights at York Hall, Bethnal Green on Wednesday June 30.
Willie “Big Bang” Casey won the latest thrilling instalment of Barry Hearn’s eight-man, one night tournaments in the super bantamweight division, and there’s a potential British title rematch on the cards in the 13th edition of the show between Merseyside pair Tony Dodson and Tony Quigley.
Quigley knocked Dodson out in the final round of their British super middleweight title fight in Liverpool last March and the duo could be drawn together, while Scotsman Stevie McGuire has also fought for the British title. Local interest will come from Waltham Abbey’s former Repton amateur Daniel Cadman, with Sheffield’s Peter Federenko and Birmingham’s Eddie McIntosh are also in the line-up, gunning for the £32,000 prize live on Sky Sports.
For the first time in the tournament’s history, the eighth competitor will be chosen by fight fans through the official Prizefighter website, as Matchroom Sport’s Eddie Hearn explains.

Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham On Steve Bunce’s Boxing Show On Thursday June 3rd

One of the Cruiserweight divisions most exciting stars, former IBF champion Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham, is to be a guest on Steve Bunce’s BBC London Radio show (94.9 & DAB) this coming Thursday evening.
Cunningham, from Philadelphia, PA, will be talking about his upcoming showdown with Canada’s Troy ‘The Boss’ Ross for the vacant IBF Cruiserweight title at the Jahnsportforum in Neubrandenburg, Germany on the 5th June 2010.
Speaking during a brief break in his final training session, at the Max Schmeling Gym in Berlin, Cunningham said. “I’m looking forward to being on Buncey’s show and getting a chance to reach to the British fans, I would love to fight in the UK one day”
Cunningham, who recently signed a promotional contract with Germany’s Sauerland Event, is no stranger to fighting in Europe. Saturday’s bout, with dangerous southpaw Ross, will be the fourth championship fight that he has traveled, from his Philadelphia home, across the Atlantic to compete in.
His first visit, against Poland’s Krzystof ‘Diablo’ Wlodaczyk at Warsaw’s Toorwar Sports Hall on the 25th November ‘06, ended in disappointment for Cunningham following some rather dubious scoring by the home judges.
The IBF ordered an immediate rematch with Wlodaczyk, which took place sixth months later on May 26th ‘07 in Katowice, Poland. At the end of twelve hard fought rounds Steve ‘USS” Cunningham was crowned the IBF Cruiserweight Champion of the World.
For his first defense the globe trotting Cunningham set sail for Germany and a meeting with Marco “Kapt’n” Huck on the 29th December ‘07. Huck struggled throughout and was being backed up and hurt nearly every round. The final round was an even more one sided affair with Cunningham chasing Huck around the ring throwing heavy right after heavy right until Huck’s corner, with just one minute and four seconds to go, threw the towel in the ring to save their charge further punishment or worse still a knockout loss.
Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham versus Troy ‘The Boss’ Ross for the vacant International Boxing Federation Cruiserweight World Title will take place at the Jahnsportforum in Neubrandenburg, Germany on the 5th June 2010.
The co-featured main event, with Cunningham-Ross, will see IBF Middleweight Champion Sebastian Sylvester defend his title against mandatory challenger Roman Karmazin.

Jimmy Lange Boxing Returns July 10 to Patriot Center

FAIRFAX, VA (June 1, 2010) — Celebrate summer with the ‘sweet science’ as popular junior middleweight contender Jimmy Lange (31-4-2, 22 KOs) of Great Falls, VA headlines another exciting Ice Promotions boxing event (www.jimmylangeboxing.com) on Saturday, July 10 at the Patriot Center. The eight-round co-main event promises to be an exciting welterweight (non-title) showdown between Baltimore’s Tim “Pitt Bull” Coleman (17-1-1, 4 KOs) and tough southpaw Damian Fuller (30-7-1, 14 KOs) of Detroit. Coleman is coming off a win against Mike Arnaoutis for the vacant United States Boxing Association (USBA) 140-pound belt last December. Meanwhile, veteran southpaw Fuller lost to world contender Lamont Peterson in his most recent fight held April 10, 2010. Both have fought previously at the Patriot Center – Coleman won his third pro fight impressively against Spencer Harsley on September 17, 2005, while Fuller successfully beat another “Pitt Bull”, Dean White, on the May 12, 2007 card.

In his first four pro fights, Juan “The Savior” Rodriguez (4-0, 4 KOs) of Haymarket, VA has rarely been tested, scoring knock outs of each opponent — three before the end of round one. After recording what many believe was the beltway’s top knockout of 2009, Tony “Mo Better” Jeter (9-2, 8 KOs) of Columbia, MD is poised to bring his punching prowess back to the Patriot Center to face Reston, VA’s Lawrence Jones (3-2-1, 1 KO) in a six-round middleweight bout. Training out of Severna Park, MD’s Club One Fitness, Jeter dropped Keith Gross with one punch on the September 26, 2009 Patriot Center card, instantly becoming the talk of the Beltway boxing community. Since returning to the pro ranks after a three-year layoff from 2005 to 2008, Jeter has gone undefeated in five bouts. In his last contest, Jones, representing LA Boxing, earned a split decision win over Vincent Batteast in a heavily-contested affair last March in Fairfax.
Promising middleweight prospect Brandon Quarles from Alexandria Boxing Club, who boasts 40 amateur wins and Golden Gloves experience, will make his professional debut against Vince “The Beast” Batteast (1-2-1) of Annapolis, MD in a four-round middleweight contest.

It’s On! – Mark ‘The Flash’ Alexander-Ryan Barrett Clash Set For Sept 11th

Hackney’s Lightweight contender Mark ‘The Flash’ Alexander has got his wish and is set to face former English Champion Ryan Barrett at the Steve Goodwin Promoted event at York Hall in Bethnal Green, London on the 11th September 2010.
An elated Alexander, who had just finished a training session with his coach Barry Smith at the Ultrachem TKO Gym in Canning Town when he got the call, said. “I’ve got the fight I wanted, Ryan Barrett’s finally accepted the fight. I’m really happy and can’t wait until September 11th. It’s a fight that needs to happen. I want the fight, I think it’s good for boxing as well as for me and him.”
Back in April, at the Steve Goodwin promoted “A Night of the Rising Stars”, former Olympian Alexander grabbed the headlines with his magnificent knockout performance against Michael ‘Simply’ Devine. The plaudits were justifiable as Alexander not only outclassed Devine, the man being touted as the new Ricky Hatton, but sent him crashing to the canvas no less than four times in just three rounds.
Alexander, who wanted to keep the momentum going, approached Barrett’s promoter a few days later to see if a fight between them could be made for June, but it didn’t look likely. Alexander explained why, “When I first talked to the promoter, Steve Goodwin, Barrett didn’t want to know. I was really disappointed as I really wanted the fight and knew it could be made for Goodwin’s June show and I really want to fight again before the summer break. Steve tried all he could to make it happen for then but by the time the card was set for the show Barrett still didn’t want to know.”
Following their final discussion Alexander decided to put out a press release calling Barrett out, “I want to fight a good name next, I want someone that’s been there and already won a title.” and then stated that he had set his sights on Barrett as his next opponent. “I’ve watched Ryan Barrett for a few years now, he’s a former English Champion. That’s just the kind of scalp I want now. I want to start getting at the names in the division.”
