CUTMAN DARREN ANTOLA TO BE AS BUSY AS DEREK JETER ON YANKEE STADIUM FIELD THIS SATURDAY NIGHT

BRONX, NY (May 31, 2010)—On Saturday night June 5th, A special and historical night of boxing will take place at Yankee Stadium.
The night will be special for many reasons to many people. But for one it will particularly special as for Darren Antola it will be a chance to serve as a cutman for WBA Super Welterweight champion Yuri Foreman in his title defense against former two-division champion Miguel Cotto.
Antola who grew up in North Jersey was a rabid Yankee fan as a kid and like many kids in his neighborhood, had dreams of donning the pinstripes and being a Yankee.
Antola will be a busy man on June 5th as before he accompanies Foreman to the ring, he will be in the corner of emerging prospects Jorge Diaz and Pawel Wolak.
“This fight night is definatly a dream come true for me to participate at Yankee Stadium”, said Antola.
“Growing up I was a huge fan of the Yankees and Don Mattingly and I don’t think I was any different from anybody else on wanting to play for the Yankees and now I can work on the same grounds as Derek Jeter on a high profile stage.”
Antola began to box at the Times Square Gym where he met Jimmy Archer who was the brother of Middleweight contender Joey Archer.
Unfortunately, Antola was in a car accident which cut short any type of in-ring career.
Antola had the fire to stay around boxing and would hang around boxing gyms and just talk boxing with the likes of Lou Duva and legendary cutman Ace Marotta.
Also at the gym was world renowned trainer Tommy Brooks, who just happened to be the son-in-law to Duva.
Also in the gym was another cutman named Jimmy Colotto. Colotto learned his trade from Chicky Ferrera and Charlie Goldman.
Colotto took Antola under his wing and young Darren began to learn everything there was to know about being a competent cutman.
Antola continued to observe and learn in the gym until he was ready to work his first corner.
Although a little nervous, Antola remembered a very important bit of advice he received from Archer and that is “Don’t Panic and just do your job”
Antola’s first experience with a cut happened in an exhibition bout in Ohio where Antola was working with Archer. The fighter for which Archer was working with suffered a cut just ten seconds into the round, when sitting in the corner, Archer told Antola “Darren, be ready to take care of that cut”
Much to his surprise the nerves were gone and Antola went to work on the fighter’s cut. The cut was not a problem for the remaineder of the fight and Antola had his calling.
Months later, Brooks came to Antola and told him that it was time to leave the exhibition circuit and join him and Duva in the paid ranks. Antola wanted to seek approval from his mentor, and Archer gave him his blessing to become a professional cutman.
From that point on, Antola begun working with Brooks and Duva first at the Red Brick Gym in Newark, New Jersey then later at a gym that Brooks and Duva opened up in West Paterson, New Jersey.
Antola has built up a great reputation for himself as he has been in the corner for Yuri Foreman’s WBA Super Welterweight title winning effort this past November 14th in Las Vegas. Not bad for a kid from New Jersey.
Antola also has manned the corner of other world champions such as former WBO Jr. Welterweight champion Kendall Holt as well as former Heavyweight champion of the world Riddick Bowe and former Jr. Welterweight champion Vivian Harris as well as former two-time cruiserweight title challenger Bobby Gunn.
In addition to Foreman, Wolk and Diaz, Antola also is the chief cutman for some of New Jersey’s finest prospects such as Jeremy Bryan, Victor Valenzuela, as well as Maryland’s undefeated Light Heavyweight, Mark “TNT” Tucker .

CASEY CLAIMS SUPER-BANTAMWEIGHTS TITLE AFTER AMAZING PRIZEFIGHTER EVENT

WILLIE ‘Big Bang’ Casey has won the Prizefighter Super-Bantamweights title after a night of thrilling action, drama and controversy at London’s York Hall.
Casey, 28, from Limerick, Ireland, claimed the £32,000 winner’s prize with a unanimous points victory over Scottish substitute Paul McElhinney.
McElhinney got his chance in the final after Welshman Ricky Owen was left in tears after a bad cut sustained during his semi-final win denied him a final appearance.
“This victory means I’m up there at the top of the division and I’ve proved I can be with the best,” said a delighted Casey, who entered Prizefighter as a short-notice replacement after Wayne McCullough withdrew injured.
“I only came here with five fights on my record but I beat everyone against all the odds.
“It was a great opportunity and if a big fight comes up then I will always take it. Prizefighter came along and without hesitation I accepted it.
“I was a bit edgy before the start as I normally come on stronger in the later rounds but then I had a fast start in my first fight.
“I showed a lot of character and that I have a big heart as there were some great lads in this.
“The best in Britain were in this competition including Esham Pickering and Jamie Arthur but I’m the one left standing.
“Who knows what the future holds? I might get a shot at the European title after winning Prizefighter. I’m very proud of everything I’ve done.”
In one of the greatest Prizefighter events ever, four of the seven fights were decided by a split decision, while one was stopped inside the distance.
Casey won an incredible semi-final on points against Barnsley’s Josh Wale in a contest where a staggering 532 punches were thrown in three rounds.
The other semi-final saw Owen gain a hard-fought win over 2002 Commonwealth Games gold medalist Jamie Arthur.
However, both men gained bad cuts during the contest and Owen’s cut saw him unable to fight in the final.
This was the 12th Prizefighter event and it started in explosive fashion as Casey floored Liverpool’s Mark Moran during their quarter-final before the contest was then stopped.
Barnsley’s Josh Wale narrowly defeated former European, Commonwealth and British champion Esham Pickering in the next contest.
Arthur scraped past Robbie Turley in the third quarter-final before Owen climbed off the canvas to beat Gavin Reid in the last one.

CES presents “Pride & Power” pro boxing card at Mohegan Sun
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (May 28, 2010) – Heavyweight prospect Tony “TNT” Grano has his timer set to explode Saturday night, June 26, when he headlines “Pride & Power,” presented by Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment and Sports, Inc. (CES), in the 10-round main event at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.
The WBF All-Americas heavyweight champion, Grano (17-1-1, 13 KOs) – fighting out of Hartford – takes on Horace Ray “The Reeazon” Grant (15-2, 9 KOs) in the “Pride & Power” headliner.
“Grano is probably the most popular boxer in New England,” promoter Jimmy Burchfield said. “He has a growing legion of fans that support him whenever he fights. We’ve loaded this card with some of the best fighters in Connecticut like Mike Oliver, David Bauza and Chad Dawson’s older brother, Rick. Joe Smith, Jr. will be in action looking for his fifth first-round knockout in his fifth pro fight.”
Oliver, the reigning New England and EBA super bantamweight champion, faces former multiple title-holder Mauricio “Indio Boy” Pastrana (35-13-2, 23 KOs) in the co-feature. Oliver, another Hartford fighter, is rated No. 4 by the USBA. Pastrana has been world champion of the IBF, WBA, IBO, and IBA.
Long Island light heavyweight Smith (4-0, 4 KOs), a 2008 New York Gold Gloves Champion; Philadelphia welterweight (6-0, 2 KOs) Frankie Trader; Hartford middleweight Bauza (5-0, 3 KOs) and New Haven middleweight Dawson (1-0, 1 KO) are all slated to fight opponents to be determined in 4-round bouts.
Also on the undercard is Bridgeport (CT) super lightweight Carlos Hernandez (0-1) versus pro-debuting Jonathan Vasquez, of Fall River (MA), while another Springfield fighter, pro-debuting light heavyweight Jose Torres, faces Ahmad Mickens (1-0-1), from Stamford (CT).

Pickering: I am convinced I will win Prizefighter

Experienced Nottingham boxer says York Hall night is his for the taking
Former Commonwealth, European and British title holder Esham Pickering says he is positive that he will lift the Prizefighter Super Bantamweight trophy at York Hall, Bethnal Green on Saturday night.
The 33 year-old fighter is the most experienced boxer in the latest of Barry Hearn’s eight-man, one night events and he is itching to get into action from 9pm live on Sky Sports 1 and HD1.
“I really cannot wait – I’ve been buzzing in training this week and I’m totally convinced that I will win this,” said Pickering at the official weigh-in at the Crowne Plaza London Hotel in Shoreditch, where all eight fighters made the weight.
The Nottinghamshire fighter takes on Barnsley’s Josh Wale in the second quarter-final on the night – a 22 year-old with nine wins from his 11 professional fights. “Josh is a good fighter and I’ve got a lot of respect for him but I will win that fight – and the two after that as well,” said Pickering. “It’s a three round fight and I will win all three.”
Wale himself is confident of a good showing at York Hall and the window-cleaner by day is raring to get in the ring with Pickering. “I’m looking very good in training so I’ve nothing to fear at all,” said Wale. “Esham’s a top fighter and I know it’s going to be a great fight, but I can win that – and the trophy too.”
The opening fight of the night promises to be a cracker as Commonwealth bronze medallist Mark Moran takes on unbeaten Limerick fighter Willie “Big Bang” Casey, with the winner facing the winner of Pickering and Wale’s clash. “Everyone here has a good record so the draw wasn’t that important – whoever you fight is going to be quality,” said Casey. “I just have to go in there and do my thing and if I fight to my potential I will win this.”
The second half of the draw sees an all-Welsh affair in quarter-final three with Commonwealth gold medallist Jamie Arthur taking on Swansea’s Robbie Turley, before unbeaten Welshman Ricky Owen takes on Yorkshireman Gavin Reid.

Welshman says win on Saturday could land shot – Hearn confirms next event
Prizefighter Super Bantamweights is just one day away at York Hall, Bethnal Green – and Jamie Arthur believes that the winner could be one step away from a British title shot.
The former Commonwealth gold medallist steps into the ring in Barry Hearn’s latest eight-man, one night tournament for the first time since losing a British featherweight title fight against Martin Lindsay in March. The 30 year-old will face fellow countryman Robbie Turley in the quarter-finals and knows
“I took some time out to contemplate my future after the Lindsay fight then last Sunday I took the call to do Prizefighter, so I haven’t been doing a lot of training,” Arthur told Steve Bunce’s BBC Radio London’s Boxing Hour. “But I’m a fit guy so it’s not been a problem. My trainer Darren Wilson had Jason Cook in Prizefighter and Gavin Rees also trains in the same gym so I’ve spoke to them but I know the format and I know it’s perfect for me. It’s fast and furious over short rounds but I learnt how to deal with that at the Commonwealth Games.”
Arthur told Bunce that the £32,000 winner’s cheque would certainly help the bank balance but victory live on Sky Sports 1 and HD1 from 9pm could open the door to a title fight.
“The British super-bantamweight title will be vacant soon, Matthew Marsh will be the number one contender and maybe the winner of this can fight him for the title – that would be amazing,” said Arthur.
“Boxers have to fight to make ends meet so financially this is a great opportunity but it’s the title opportunities that I’m after.”
Saturday’s action will be the twelfth edition of the ground-breaking boxing show, and the man behind the entertainment also spoke to Bunce about how Saturday’s eight hopefuls can look to a previous winner for inspiration.
“Picture the scene – a man comes back from Olympics with gold medal as a national hero, signs big contract and stinks the place out several times,” said Hearn, who confirmed that the next Prizefighter will take place on June 30 at super-middleweight. “Too much to say for himself, manages his own affairs and doesn’t fight – everyone tries but it’s destined never to happen for him and he’s done… but then along comes Prizefighter and now Audley Harrison is hot property again and on the verge of a World title shot – that’s what this event can do.”

PHILADELPHIA (May 28, 2010)—On Friday night, June 4th boxing returns to The Legendary Blue Horizon with a great night of professional boxing as well as a celebration of Vernoca L. Michael’s sixty-fifth birthday.
The card is promoted by Blue Horizon Boxing Promotions LLC and SAM Promotions.
In the main event, world ranked Light Heavyweight Yusaf “Mack Attack” Mack will see action against an opponent to be named in an eight round bout.
Mack, of Philadelphia has a record of 28-3-2 with seventeen knockouts and is ranked number eleven in the world by the IBF.
Mack will be looking to get back in the win column and climb back up the rankings after his sixth round stoppage defeat to former world champion Glen Johnson on February 5th in Miami.
That fight was an IBF elimination bout and a win would have catapulted Mack into a world title opportunity with reigning champion Tavoris Cloud.
Before that setback, Mack had won five consecutive bouts which included an impressive decision over the highly regarded Chris Henry on February 6th, 2009.
This will be Mack’s first appearance in Philadelphia since September 26th, 2008 when Mack took out Omar Pittman at the Philadelphia Armory.
Mack is undefeated at The Legendary Blue Horizon (7-0, 4 KO’s) and in his last appearance at “The Blue” Mack won the USBA Super Middleweight title with an eighth round stoppage over Shannon Miller.
In the co-feature, hot prospect, Coy “Pretty Boy” Evans will take on an opponent to be named.
Evans of Philadelphia has a record of 8-0-1 with two knockouts and is quickly becoming one of the hottest fighters in the city.
After not recording a stopping his first six bouts, Evans has scored explosive knockouts in two of his last three outing which includes his most recent outing when Evans annihilated Morris Chule in three rounds on April 9th at The Arena in Philadelphia.
In a six round Super Middleweight fight, undefeated Farah Ennis (13-0, 7 KO’s) of Philadelphia will be looking for his second consecutive victory at The Legendary Blue Horizon he took out Frankie Santos in two rounds. Ennis, who is the brother of currant USBA Jr. Middleweight Derek Ennis, will be taking on an opponent to be named.
Van Oscar Penovaroff (5-0, 4 KO’s) of Kailua Kona, Hawaii will take on Gustavo Dailey (4-8, 1 KO) of Philadelphia in a four round Lightweight bout.
In a four round Ladies Jr. Middleweight bout, the popular Olivia “The Great” Fonseca (3-2-2, 2 KO’s) battles undefeated Akima Stocks (3-0, 3 KO’s) of Newark, NJ in a bout scheduled for four rounds.
In a four round Super Featherweight bout, Keenan Smith (1-0) of Philadelphia will take on Alex Monte, 1-0.
In a four round Jr. Middleweight bout, Ismael Garcia (1-0) of Milville, NJ takes on debuting Tyrone Rivera of Allentown, PA.
Legendary Blue Horizon favorite, Darrell Jones (3-0, 1 KO—all at The Legendary Blue Horizon) will take on Marcus Hall (3-1, 2 KO’s) of Rochester, NY.
