Amateur Boxing at Gleason’s Gym this Saturday Evening

Gleason’s Gym will host the New York City Empire State Games Finals this Saturday evening May 29, 2010.
This premier tournament is only second to the Daily News Golden Gloves. It will showcase New York City’s best amateur boxers.
The show will include amateur boxers that are part of our Monthly Boxing Series. The show will include JO, Novice, Senior and Master bouts.
The New York City Empire State Games Finalists will meet winners from other areas of the State in Buffalo at The 2010 Empire State Games in late July.
The weigh in will begin at 4:00PM and the first bout will begin at 6:00PM.
All our bouts are pre-matched. They are sanctioned by USABoxingMetro. All boxers must have their boxing book with them in order to participate.

“Dark horse” Turley primed for all-Welsh Prizefighter clash

Newport fighter meets Jamie Arthur in London on Saturday
Three Welsh boxers are in the line-up for Saturday’s Prizefighter Super Bantamweights at York Hall in Bethnal Green, east London – and Robbie Turley believes the trophy will be heading to the Valleys at the end of the night.
Newport fighter Turley faces Commonwealth gold medallist Jamie Arthur in an all-Welsh quarter-final, and if unbeaten Swansea man Ricky Owen beats Gavin Reid in their quarter-final, there will definitely be a Welshman in the final.
Newbridge’s Gavin Rees claimed the Prizefighter Light Welterweight title in December and the draw made by darts legend Phil “The Power” Taylor has certainly increased the chances of a Welshman claiming the £32,000 winner’s cheque live on Sky Sports.
“Jamie Arthur has sparred with me a lot and we’ve fought on the same Newport bills – he’s even commentated on my fights!” said Turley. “It’s a bit strange as we’re friends but it’s a business at the end of the day and we all want to win regardless of who we fight.
“There are three good Welsh boxers in the mix and we’ve got a really good chance to win it. I’m definitely the dark horse in the line-up – I was a top amateur and that pedigree is going to help me out. It’s a new weight for me coming down from featherweight but I believe that this is my weight and I’ve come here to win.”
It will be the first time that Turley has fought outside of Wales, registering seven wins and two defeats from his nine fights as a professional. Making his debut at York Hall will be no problem for the 23 year-old, as he has a clear idea of the strategy that is needed to win Prizefighter.
“I believe the most skilled fighter will win on the night. It’s not about who is the biggest or the bravest,” said Turley. “Bravery can win you a 10 or 12 round fight where you can wear people down but you cannot get worn down over three rounds, Prizefighter is down to skill, speed and accuracy and I’ve got all those ingredients. A win would mean everything to me, a great start to look forward and with a good bank balance too.”
Turley’s desire for victory comes also has roots in his amateur days where he cut his teeth alongside another of Wales’ rising stars.
“I went to the same amateur gym as Nathan Cleverly and until a few months ago he lived about 20 doors from me,” said Turley. “He was my sparring partner for year, we were the youngest members of the senior Welsh squad too – it was great fun, and seeing what he’s achieved only spurs me on more.”

Azevedo Joins MFC’s Stable

Brazilian lightweight only man to beat World Champion Jose Aldo

The Maximum Fighting Championship has added a fighter with impressive credentials to its talent roster in the lightweight ranks.
Brazilian star Luciano Azevedo (16-8) boasts a strong resume and the native of Rio de Janeiro is expected to make his organization – and North American – debut at MFC 26. Details on the show and its lineup will be announced shortly. Azevedo has signed an exclusive four fight deal with The Maximum Fighting Championship.
The 26-year-old, who has won six of his last eight encounters, holds the distinction of being the only fighter to best world-renown featherweight Jose Aldo, capturing a submission victory via rear-naked choke when the two met in 2005 in Brazil. One of Azevedo’s other career highlights is a decision win over veteran Din Thomas – a verdict that came just four months after his victory over Aldo.
“I’m very excited to have Luciano in our organization and I’m expecting big things from him. I believe he can deliver in a big way,” said MFC Owner/President Mark Pavelich. “Obviously he has a great resume particularly with his win over Aldo – the only man in the world that has that distinction. Luciano has all the tools to be a champion so I’m hopeful he will live up to the expectations.”
Azevedo has yet to fight in North America, predominantly fighting in his native Brazil but also making five trips to England, two to Japan, and a single matchup in France. The five-foot-eight jiu-jitsu practitioner and wrestler has won 12 of his fights by submission – five each by triangle choke and armbar along with two via rear-naked choke.

“Tua De Force” shifts to Atlantic City David Tua vs. Monte Barrett July 17 at The Tropicana

NEW YORK (May 26, 2010) – “Tua De Force” has shifted sites and will now continue July 17 at the Tropicana Casino and Resort in Atlantic City as Samoan strongman David “Tuamanator” Tua, coming off a near shutout victory by unanimous 12-round decision this past March, faces former world title challenger Monte “Two Gunz” Barrett.
The Tua-Barrett fight had been tentatively scheduled for June 26 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Gotham Boxing will co-promote the July 17th event in Atlantic City with Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing.
“I was looking forward to Brazil because of the opportunity to expand David’s marketability in new areas, namely throughout Latin America,” Gotham Boxing President and Tua’s promoter Cedric Kushner explained. “However, the biggest and most important market, obviously, still is the United States and, therefore, fighting in New Jersey will give David’s career that extra bump. I want to thank Joe DeGuardia for working with me on this high-profile show in the middle of the summer.”
Tua (51-3-1, 43 KOs), rated No. 2 by the World Boxing Organization, remains arguably the most dangerous puncher in boxing today. It’s been eight years since “The Tuamanator” last fought in Atlantic City, where he is undefeated in 13 fights with 12 knockouts.
Tua, who successfully defended his WBO Asia Pacific and WBO Oriental heavyweight title belts against Friday Ahunanya (120-108, 119-109, 117-111), has defeated former world champions John Ruiz (KO1), Michael Moorer (KO1) and Oleg Maskaev (KO11) in Atlantic City, in addition to Hasim Rahman (KO10), during his explosive career.
“I’m delighted to be fighting in the U.S. again,” Tua commented, “especially in Atlantic City where I’ve had so much success in the past.”
Barrett (34-9, 20 KOs), now fighting out of New Jersey, is also unbeaten in Atlantic City, sporting a perfect 7-0 (5 KOs) record there. “I was looking forward to Brazil,” Monte added, “but there’s nothing like fighting at home.”
New Zealand’s national indigenous broadcaster, Maori Television, will present exclusive, live and free-to-air coverage of Tua’s July 17th fight.
