WORCESTER, Mass. (April 27, 2010) – The first 5-time World’s Strongest Man, Polish icon Mariusz “Dominator” Pudzianowski, makes his United States debut May 21 against 2-time UFC heavyweight champion Tim “Maine-iac” Sylvia (25-6-0) in the super heavyweight main event, headlining the first major mixed-martial-arts show in Massachusetts history, “God of Martial Arts” pay-per-view event, at the DCU Center in Worcester.
“God of Martial Arts” is being presented by Moosin, the South Korea-based promotional company, which has promoted MMA shows in South Korea and the United States. Moosin, in conjunction with the International Taekwon-Do Federation, plans expansion into to China, Poland and Australia.
The 6-1,275-pound Pudzianowski (1-0), a national hero in Poland, won his cage debut last December, forcing Marcin Najman to tap-out to punches and kicks in only 43 seconds. In addition to his feats of strength as the World’s Strongest Man, Marius practices karate and finished second in Poland’s version of “Dancing With The Stars.”
During his sensational career, Ellsworth, Maine-native Sylvia (6-8, 280 lbs.) has defeated many of the top MMA heavyweights and super heavyweights – Andrei Arlovski (2) Brandon Vera, Jeff Monson, Wes Sims, Ricco Rodriguez, Mike Whitehead (2), Ben Rothwell and Jason Lambert.
“The owner of Moosin, Mr. Oh, is an affluent Korean businessman who owns a global Yaekwon-Do company in South Korea,” Moosin’s Corey Fischer explained. “This (Moosin) isn’t about money; it’s about prestige. He wants to leave his legacy as the man who brought MMA to the forefront of the world, bringing it back to being a traditional sport. In the co-main event, Korean heavyweight Mu Bae “The Heavy Tank of Busan” Choi (9-4-0) battles veteran Travis “Diesel” Wiuff (59-14-0). Brazilian middleweight Rafael “Sapo” Natal (11-2-0) takes on Travis “The Serial Killer” Lutter (10-5-0), while Bahamian lightweight Yves “The Texas Gunslinger” Edwards (37-15-1) faces New England’s rising-star Mike Campbell (7-2-0).
A special female attraction has been added featuring two of the premier women MMA fighters in the U.S., Tara LaRosa (18-1-0) and Roxy Modafferi (13-4-0), at a 130-pound catch-weight.

Unfinished business for police officer Jason ‘School Boy’ Pires

PROVIDENCE (April 27, 2010) – New Bedford police officer Jason “School Boy” Pires, one of the top United States amateur boxers in the mid-1990s, has come back to the ring after graduating from college to take care of some unfinished business.
Pires (22-3-1, 9 KOs), a former USBA super bantamweight champion, takes on former world title challenger Michael “Cold Blood” Clark (39-5-1, 18 KOs), headlining the May 7th “Spring Fever” pro boxing card, presented by Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment and Sports, Inc. (CES), at the Twin River Event Center in Lincoln, R.I.
Pires and Clark are fighting for the vacant NABA-U.S. junior welterweight title in a special 9-round bout.
As an alternate on the 1996 U.S. Olympic Boxing Team, Pires was recognized as one of the best amateurs in the nation. When Team USA was preparing for a dual meet against Russia, Jason roomed with the great Floyd “Money” Mayweather, Jr.
“Floyd’s a good guy,” Jason said. “It was a great experience working out with him and being roommates. He’s a down-to-earth guy. I remember sneaking out at night and going to the roller skating rink with him.”
Pires turned pro in 1996, winning his first 15 fights, before suffering his first loss to the much more experienced Arthur “Flash” Johnson, who had been in three world title fights at that time, by a 10-round majority decision. Two years and four wins later, Jason lost an 8-round majority decision to Oscar Leon, who went on to fight twice for the world title.
In 2003, Pires was stopped for the first and only time of his career by a hot prospect, 14-0 Rocky Juarez. Jason decided to concentrate on school, earning a BA degree from the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth in sociology and criminal justice before becoming a police officer in his hometown of New Bedford (MA).
The now 35-year-old Pires returned to the squared circle Nov. 29, 2008, more than five years since his last fight, winning a 6-round decision against veteran Frank Houghtaling, followed by a win by 8-round decision against Louie Leija (21-9-1), and a 6-round majority draw in his last action (March19) versus John Revish in which Jason was dropped twice in the second round but came back to earn the draw, though many ringside observers felt he won the fight.
“I came back because I missed it,” Pires said of his return to boxing. “I was out of boxing five years but I was still in the gym. I’ve been boxing since I was a baby – three years old; it’s in my blood. It’s part of me. I had put so much into boxing and wanted to take care of unfinished business – winning a world title and making some real money. I decided to go for it.
“Boxing has helped me as a police officer. I know how to stay focused, the No. 1 priority in both jobs, and to always be in top condition. I’m a professional in both jobs. One time I had a foot chase with a guy and caught him after a mile. You never know what to expect when you get a call. What I’ve learned in the gym has helped me be a better police officer.”
Pires’ May 7th opponent, Clark, has been an NABF, IBC and WBC Continental Americas champion, and he lost his only world title-fight in 1999 to WBO lightweight champion Artur Grigorian. Clark holds a win against former CES star Gary “Tiger” Balletto during The Contender, Season 2 as well as victories against other top fighters such as Mauro Lucero, Antonio Rameriz and the late Leavander Johnson.

Gomez and Gonzales finally square off at Tachi

Lemoore, Calif. – Riding the wave of five submissions and truck load of press, rising flyweight star Ulysses Gomez is expected to meet an even bigger challenge than he did when he faced Rambaa Somdet in his third bout of his MMA career.
On May 5th at the Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino in Lemoore, Calif. Gomez (5-1) won’t have the luxury of owning an overwhelming advantage on the ground, like he had in his previous six bouts, but rather he will be the underdog if the fight happens to hit the canvas against Hanford, Calif.’s Luis Gonzales (2-1) a jiu-jitsu black belt.
“I think this is a tougher fight for me personally, but I still feel like people out there just expect me to win,” said Gomez, who trains at Cobra Kai in Las Vegas and with Ken Hahn’s Striking Unlimited. “I think that what he’s shown he is good at in MMA, I’m better at and what I’ve shown I’m good at in MMA, he’s better at. He’s won his fights striking and I’ve won mine on the ground.”
The bout will be the main event of an 11-bout Tachi Palace Fights card and crown the first ever flyweight champ for the upstart promotion.
“I’m excited this has been a long time coming,” said Gonzales, who teaches at several schools in Central California, including his own academy in Tulare and at Hanford’s Valley Fight Club. “I’m very anxious for this fight. People have been talking about this fight for a long time and it’s long overdue.”
The pair were favorites in a 125-pound tournament at Tachi in 2008, but both lost decisions, which derailed their collision course.
“I think that Luis is a good fighter, I really respect his skills,” Gomez said. “Every time that we’ve talked, he’s been nice. I’m really just excited for this fight.”
The fight should be one of the more strategic battles on the card.
“I think that we match up well with each other. We are both ground fighters and we are going to see who can dictate who is better in the top position,” Gonzales said.
Gomez is riding a 3-fight win streak into the contest, but doesn’t feel any of the pressures of fighting for a title.
“This is really the same as any other fighter. Yeah, it’s for a belt, but once I get the belt I would wear it around the house a few times and maybe to Taco Bell once or twice and put it away,” Gomez said.

Also returning to action at Tachi Palace Fights is Lemoore, Calif.’s Poppies Martinez (17-6) in a welterweight tilt with Visalia, Calif.’s Darren Crisp (7-5) and a featherweight special attraction between the always exciting Enoch Wilson (13-6-1) of Portland, Ore takes on Las Vegas, Nev.’s Dustin Phillips (11-5).
In one of the biggest signing in Tachi Palace Fights’ short history, 2004 Olympic Silver medalist Stephen Abas will make his pro MMA debut at 135 pounds. Abas is widely regarded as one of the top wrestlers to enter the MMA world. He was a 4-time All American and 3-time National Champion at Fresno State. He will take on Sacramento, Calif.’s Luis Jauregui (0-1).

PHILADELPHIA (April 27, 2010)—On Friday night, May 7th at The Arena (Formally The New Alhambra) a huge night of boxing will take place that will feature undefeated Jr. Welterweight, Danny “Swift” Garcia taking on rugged Christopher “Kid KO” Fernandez in the ten round main event.

Dawejko, from the Tacony section of Philadelphia brings in a record of 3-0 with one knockout. In his last bout, Dawejko scored a four round unanimous decision over K.C. Cunningham on March 6th in Atlantic City.
The nineteen year old has quickly become a fan favorite in the city as this will be his second start in Philly. In his lone hometown fight, Dawejko scored an explosive first round stoppage over Ricardo Johnson on February 5th at The Legendary Blue Horizon.
Dawejko is a former world Jr. Amateur champion.
Jones of Washington, D.C has a record of 2-2-1 with both wins coming by knockout.
This will be his first bout in nearly a decade and is coming off a no-contest with Dana Dunston in June of 2000 in Glen Burnie, MD.
Also seeing action will be middleweight prospect, Latif Mundy.
Mundy of Philadelphia was an amateur star and has accumulated a professional record of 8-2 with three knockouts.
Mundy won his first eight bouts and will be looking to get back into the win column after suffering back to back defeats to undefeated Patrick Majewski (10-0) and his last bout where he lost to rising Gabriel Rosado (12-4) via seventh round stoppage on November 7th in Atlantic City in what was a toe to toe war.
Mundy’s opponent will be named shortly.
In other bouts:
Charles Hayward (2-2, 1 KO) of Philadelphia will take on Andre Espuet (2-1, 1KO) of Morristown, NJ in a four round Light Heavyweight bout.
Undefeated Light Heavyweight, Andy Mejias (5-0, 1 KO) of Utica, NY will battle Todd Eriksson (1-3-1, 1 KO) of Dover, NJ in a bout scheduled for four rounds.
In a four round bout featuring New Jersey based Featherweights, Jose Ortiz (3-2, 2 KO’s) of Jersey City will take on undefeated Jason Sosa (2-0, 1 KO) of Camden.
Undefeated cruiserweight, Julio Cesar Matthews (9-0, 5 KO’s) will see action in a six round bout against an opponent to be named.

KRENCE: PRIZEFIGHTER WIN WILL TAKE ME TO BRITISH TITLE

MARK Krence believes winning Friday’s Prizefighter Cruiserweights II will catapult him to a third shot at a British title.
Chesterfield-based Krence, 33, has fought twice for the British Heavyweight Championship and is desperate to compete for the Lonsdale belt at cruiserweight level.
However, after six defeats in his last ten fights, the only way for that to happen is for him to become the Prizefighter Cruiserweights II champion.
The eight-man, one-night tournament takes place at the York Hall in Bethnal Green, east London on Friday and represents a last chance for Krence to fulfil his boxing ambitions.
“Winning Prizefighter will boost my career back up there and push me towards a British title shot, which is what I’m after,” said Krence.
“It’s my dream to become British champion. I want to win the British title for my three lads so I want them to be able to say ‘my dad’s a British champion’.
“Losing twice for the British heavyweight title was worse than anything as I had my heart set on winning it.
“I’ve had two shots and it wasn’t meant to be but hopefully it will be third time lucky and I’ll win the British cruiserweight title.
“I took the Matt Skelton fight at 24 hours notice so I wasn’t prepared and against Scott Gammer I was winning then just got caught in the ninth round.”
Krence had been scheduled to take part in the first Prizefighter Cruiserweights event but had to withdraw as he could not make the weight in time.
However, he is delighted to be given a second chance and intends to take it and secure the £32,000 top prize.
“I’m excited to be picked and to have the opportunity,” added Krence. “I didn’t know there was another cruiserweight tournament until I got the phone call but I’m glad to be in it and I’m going to grab the opportunity with both hands.
“People are saying I’m getting on and that I’m too old but there are still things to come from me that people haven’t seen before.
“I’ve been criticised all the way through my boxing career for 15 years so it all just goes over my head.
“I don’t care what the critics say; if they were so good then they would be in the ring doing it.
“My trainer is saying I’m looking better than I have been in the last five years.”
The full list of contenders is: John Anthony (Doncaster), Wayne Brooks (Cardiff), Darren Corbett (Belfast), Jon-Lewis Dickinson (County Durham), Herbie Hide (Norwich), Zahid Kahut (Batley), Mark Krence (Chesterfield) and Leon Williams (Streatham, London).
