GUERRERO VACATES JUNIOR LIGHTWEIGHT TITLE AS HIS WIFE BATTLES CANCER

LOS ANGELES, February 16 – Two-Division World Champion Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero, the current IBF Junior Lightweight World Title holder, announced today that he is relinquishing his title in order to care for his wife Casey, who is currently battling leukemia.
“It is with great regret that I am relinquishing the junior lightweight championship of the world that I, along with my team, worked so hard to capture,” said the 26-year old Guerrero. “I feel that it is in the best interest of the sport and the fans that I care so deeply for to give someone else a chance to fulfill their dream of becoming a World Champion. I am now focused on the love of my life, my wife Casey, as undoubtedly we face the greatest opponent of our life, cancer. Whatever the outcome, our faith in Jesus Christ will get us through. Thank you for the prayers and support. God bless.”
Casey Guerrero, who was stricken with leukemia in 2007, is currently recovering from a bone marrow transplant and chemotherapy treatment. Within the next two to three weeks it will be known whether her latest treatment was a success or not.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Guerrero family during this tough time,” said Oscar de la Hoya, president of Golden Boy Promotions. “We respect his decision to vacate his title and will do everything in our power to get him back in for a World Title shot when he is ready to return to the ring.”

Price is wrong Fighter quits, blows big opportunity at MFC 24

Chris Price has blown has his shot at making a name for himself in the MFC, and at the same time, likely torpedoed his entire career in mixed martial arts.
The light heavyweight was supposed to make his organizational debut at MFC 24: Heat XC but after several issues regarding his passport arose, he has now backed out of his fight against Nick Penner completely. In fact Price told one half of his management via text message that he was finished with fighting all together, apparently stating “I’m done. I was never that good in the first place.”
With Price backing down and immediately being released from his multi-fight contract with the MFC, Maximum Fighting Championship officials have approached heavy-handed Aron “The Poster Boy” Lofton to take on Penner (9-1). A final decision on that potential matchup should come within the next 24-48 hours.
Price had initially run into passport problems in reference to substantial amounts of child support he owed to his wife. The pair had split up with his wife filing for child support, but then got back together thus erasing the need for support. Though that issue seemed bypassed for the time being, Price continued to waffle on getting his passport right up until allegedly contacting his agent and flushing his fight career.
“It’s embarrassing,” offered one source close to Price. “The kid hung everyone out to dry and then didn’t have the balls to call – he sent a text.”
Lofton (8-3) won three of his first four fights in the MFC but is currently on a two-fight skid in the organization, having been stopped by Marvin Eastman at MFC 21 and then getting submitted via armbar by Roger Hollett at Heat XC 4.
170 SHUFFLE: Due to a torn ACL, Thiago Goncalves has been shelved for his appearance at MFC 24. The Brazilian black belt who trains in Vancouver, B.C., was looking to avenge a loss at Heat XC 3 to Corey MacDonald. Instead, Jesse Juarez will take the spot vacated by Goncalves and square off against Nathan Gunn. Juarez (12-5) won his sixth straight fight at MFC 23 when he bested Joe Christopher by unanimous decision. The Torrence, California, native trains under MFC lightweight champion Antonio McKee.

The ASICS U.S. Open Wrestling Championships will feature the nation’s top senior-level wrestlers in the three Olympic styles: men’s freestyle, women’s freestyle and Greco-Roman. The Men’s FILA Junior National Championships include the nation’s top athletes who are 17-20 years old, competing in freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling. Up to 850 athletes are expected to participate in the two competitions.
The top seven athletes in each weight class at the ASICS U.S. Open Wrestling Championships qualify to compete at the 2010 U.S. Senior World Team Trials in Council Bluffs, Iowa, June 10-12. The Men’s FILA Junior National Championships is a qualifying event for the FILA Junior World Team Trials in Colorado Springs, Colo., May 21-22.

HOBOKEN, N.J. (Feb. 16, 2010) – An injury to Cristian Mijares has forced the former 2-time world champion off a February 27 card in Cancun, which has been cancelled and replaced by a world-class show in Guadalajara, Mexico, on “The Double Assault” pay-per-view extravaganza.
“After looking forward to coming back and restoring his rightful place among the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world,” KO Entertainment president Ignacio “Nacho” Huizar explained, “Cristian Mijares was crushed with disappointment to learn a broken eardrum he suffered December 12 hasn’t healed properly and doctors wouldn’t clear him to fight Feb. 27.”
Instead, the revamped PPV show now features two world championship fights from Guadalajara, presented by Boxeo De Gala, to replace the Cancun card that was to be headlined by Hugo Hernan Garay vs. Chris Henry. The 12-round main event finds WBA light flyweight champion Rodel “Bantang Mandaue” Mayol (26-4-1, 20 KOs), rated No. 2 by The Ring, defending his crown against the WBC No. 1 contender, former WBC light flyweight titlist Omar “Giant Killer” Nino (28-3-1, 20 KOs). Also airing from Guadalajara is a 10-round WBC Youth lightweight championship match between defending champ Daniel “Tremendo” Estrada (21-1, 17 KOs) and veteran Angel Alirio “El Morocho” Rivero (21-7-1, 14 KOs).
