FORMER WORLD JUNIOR CHAMPION, JOEY DAWEJKO TO MAKE PHILLY DEBUT ON FEBRUARY 5th AT THE LEGENDARY BLUE HORIZON

PHILADELPHIA (January 29, 2009)—On Friday night February 5th one of the most anticipated area debuts in quite some time will take place as former world Junior amateur heavyweight champion Joey Dawejko will fight a four round Heavyweight bout as part of the Special Valentine’s Day card at The Legendary Blue Horizon.

The card is promoted by Vernoca L. Michael and Blue Horizon Boxing promotions Inc.

There will be members from the Red Cross at the Blue Horizon where a station will be set up for donations for relief in regards to the recent Tragic Earthquake that took place earlier this month in Haiti and the boxing community is encouraged to help those in need.

Dawejko from the Tacony section of Philadelphia picked up boxing as a youngster after his grandfather took him to the local Golden Gloves that was ironically held at The Blue Horizon and Dawejko wanted to give boxing a try.

Dawejko started to have success as a junior boxer which facilitated Dawejko to step up the competition. In 2008, Dawejko traveled to Guadalajara, Mexico to compete in the prestigious world Junior Championships.

Four victories later Dawejko captured the championship when he defeated Eric Brechlin of Germany by a score of 9-1 Dewejko won his four bouts by a combined score of 43-16, and Dewejko was anointed the future of USA Boxing.

Dewejko didn’t want to wait another four years for the next Olympics to come around and decided to turn pro after finishing his amateur career with a record of 56-12.

“The wait for the Olympics plus I felt to go out on top was the perfect ending and it was time to go pro”, said the then eighteen year old prodigy.

Dewejko received a phone call that former Heavyweight champion of the world Hassim Rahman needed a sparring partner and Dewejko jumped at the chance to work with Rahman.

“I was still an amateur when that happened. It actually was before the world junior championship. I guess he liked what he saw in those sessions and we kept in touch.”

After sparring with Rahman for a second camp, Dawejko signed a contract with Rahman as the former champ is now the manager of young Dawejko.

Since then Dawejko has sparred with former WBC Heavyweight champion Samuel Peter as he prepared to take on Eddie Chambers.

Dawejko turned pro on September 26, 2009 in Kinder, Louisiana against thirteen fight veteran Royphy Solieau. Dawejko scored a knockdown in pounding out a six round unanimous decision.

Dawejko showed that he was a throwback as he fought six rounds in his pro debut rather than the four rounder’s that most fighters take in the first fight.

Now in Dawejko’s second start he will get to perform in front of the hometown fans.

“I go to just about all the fights at The Blue Horizon and sometimes I get lost in thought as I am always envisioning being in that ring and performing for the knowledgeable crowd that Blue Horizon has and I can’t wait until February 5th to display my skills in front of them”

Rahman will be ringside to watch his protégé fight undefeated Ricardo Johnson (1-0) of Ohio in the four round bout.

In the main event, USBA Jr. Middleweight champion, Derek “Pooh” Ennis (19-2-1, 12 KO’s) of Philadelphia will take on Edwin Vazquez (22-14-2, 8 KO’s) of Santurce, Puerto Rico in an eight round non-title bout.

In an eight round co-feature, former world title challenger Israel “Pito” Cardona (36-10, 28 KO’s) of Hartford, CT takes on the upset specialist Martinus Clay (13-24-4, 5 KO’s) of Philadelphia.

In a four round Heavyweight bout of Philadelphian’s, Tim Johnson (4-1, 2 KO’s) takes on Charles Hayward (2-2, 1 KO)

In a four round Ladies Welterweight bout, Jackie Davis (3-0, 1 KO) of Philadelphia takes on Cassandra Lindsay (3-4, 2 KO’s) of Columbus, MS

Andres Gustafson (3-0, 1 KO) of Norrkoping, Sweden will travel across the Atlantic to do battle with Levay King (0-1) in a four round Heavyweight attraction.

In a battle of Phildelphia based Jr. Welterweight, Clement Bethea will make his pro debut against comebacking Henry Northan (0-1).

Northan, will be making his first ring appearance in nearly seven years.

Also seeing action is exciting undefeated Ronald Cruz (7-0, 4 KO’s) of Bethlehem, PA against an opponent to be named in a four round bout.

NEW YORK (Jan. 28, 2010)—Six months ago, Lavar Johnson lay in a hospital bed, clinging to his life after he was gunned down while attending a family barbeque during the July 4 holiday. On Friday, March 26, the 32-year-old will enter a new chapter in his incredible recovery when he restarts his professional mixed martial arts (MMA) career in the main event of a STRIKEFORCE Challengers fight card at Save Mart Center in Fresno, California on Friday, March 26.

The heavy-handed Johnson (13-3), a 6-foot-4 inch, 250-pound resident of nearby Madera, will face off with another highly touted prospect, undefeated Lolohea Mahe (4-0-1) of Wailua, Maui in the STRIKEFORCE cage.

Tickets for the STRIKEFORCE Challengers event, priced from $30, go on sale on Monday, Feb. 1, at the Save Mart Center box office and select Save Mart Supermarkets, all Ticketmaster locations (800) 745-3000, Ticketmaster online (www.ticketmaster.com) and STRIKEFORCE’s official website (www.strikeforce.com).

“My health is great and I’m almost back to where I was,” said Johnson. In his last start in the cage, Johnson crushed Carl Seumanutafa in just 18 seconds with a single punch at the first-ever STRIKEFORCE Challengers event at Save Mart Center on May 15, 2009.

After being struck down by the gunfire that also led to the death of a cousin, Johnson, a father of two boys, ages eight and five, spent one month in hospital care and lost approximately 60 pounds.

Months of physical rehabilitation followed and, one month ago, Johnson was cleared by a physician to return to training with trainer Jasper Tayaba and Team Buhawe in Fresno

“(The experience) made me realize how fragile life is and that every day I’m here is a blessing. It has also made me take MMA more seriously.”

In other action on the STRIKEFORCE Challengers card, “Abongo” Humphrey (5-1) of Atlanta, Ga., will square off with George Bush III (5-1) of Columbus, Ohio, at light heavyweight (205 pounds).

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt Luke Stewart (6-2) of San Francisco, California will make his long-awaited return to action against Andre Galvao (3-1) of Brazil in a welterweight (170 pounds) contest.

Unbeaten Zoila Frausto (2-0) of Fresno will face off at 135 pounds with another one of the top prospects in the women’s field, Miesha “Takedown” Tate (7-2) of Olympia, Washington.

American Kickboxing Academy bred wrestling stud Justin “The Silverback” Wilcox (8-3) of San Jose, Calif., will do battle with Bryan Travers (13-1) of Bakersfield, Calif., at lightweight (155 pounds).

Save Mart Center doors will open for the STRIKEFORCE Challengers event at 6 p.m. PT. The first live, non-televised, preliminary bout will begin at 6:45 p.m.

The live SHOWTIME® telecast will begin at 11:45 p.m. ET/ PT (delayed on the west coast).

Act Now To Get Involved in Gleason’s Second Annual Masters Clinic and Show

We have 39 Master’s looking to get matched up. The more the better.

Gleason’s Gym will host it’s second annual Masters Clinic and boxing show February 18-20,2010.

Thursday morning will be the arrival into New York. Orientation will be from 12:00 noon to 1:oo pm. The first workout will be from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. A discussion on Masters boxing will be from 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm. Free time after that.

Friday morning will have training from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon. The afternoon session will run from 2 pm to 4:00 pm. A discussion on Amateur boxing and White Collar boxing will be from 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm. Free time after that.

Saturday morning will have light training from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon. Match ups for the evening show will take place from 12:00 noon to 1:00 pm. An optional workout for those not competing in the evening show from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. The weigh in for the show will be from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm. The sanctioned Master Boxing Show will begin at 7:00 pm and will end by 10:00 pm.

SHUMENOV BROTHERS LAUNCH KZ EVENT PRODUCTIONS IN LAS VEGAS

CAMPILLO-SHUMENOV REMATCH FOR LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT WORLD TITLES ON FOX SPORTS NET FRIDAY NIGHT FROM HARD ROCK HOTEL & CASINO

LOS ANGELES, January 27, 2010 – The Shumenov brothers, world title challenger Beibut and Chingis, two years ago established their boxing promotional company, KZ Event Productions, in Las Vegas. Tomorrow night (Friday), KZ Event Productions makes its Las Vegas debut with the presentation of “Fight Night With De La Hoya and Hopkins: Campillo vs. Shumenov II,” along with Golden Boy Promotions, at The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The main event is a 12-round WBA/IBA Light Heavyweight Championship match between WBA champion, Spain’s Gabriel Campillo (19-2, 6 KOs), and IBA World title-holder Beibut Shumenov (8-1, 6 KOs).

Last August in Astana, Kazakhstan, KZ Event Productions presented Campillo’s first title defense against Shumenov, the 2004 Kazakhstan Olympian. Campillo was able to hold on to his WBA World Title by way of a controversial decision that was announced as unanimous but changed the following day to a majority decision (114-113, 113-113 and 115-111) when a scoring error was discovered. The controversy surrounding the scoring led to tomorrow evening’s rematch.

According to CompuBox’s statistical breakdown of Campillo-Shumenov I, Shumenov landed more total punches and at a higher connect percentage (213 of 651 compared to Campillo’s 199 of 672), including a dominating 193-144 edge in power punches. CompuBox’s scoring gave Shumenov the first five rounds in addition to the eighth and ninth (10-8) for a 115-112 advantage.

With a victory against Campillo, Shumenov would become the major world light heavyweight champion with the fewest amount of pro bouts (10), breaking the record (15) set by Jeff “Hit Man” Harding in 1989. Beibut would also become the fourth major world title holder from Kazakhstan, joining Aratoly Alexandrov (1990 WBC super featherweight), Oleg “Big O” Maskaev (2000 WBC heavyweight), and Vassily “The Tiger” Jirov (2001-2003 IBF cruiserweight.

Beibut and Chingis share responsibilities running KZ Event Productions, but as Beibut’s fights get closer, Chingis and his staff always take as much of the promotional business stress as possible off Beibut. “I am involved 100-percent until I go into training for a fight,” Beibut explained. “My brother and Team KZ take the burden off of me so I can focus on training. Our first goal is for me to win the WBA world title and then we will continue signing fighters and building champions.”

Joining Shumenov on tomorrow night’s show are two other KZ Event Productions fighters, unbeaten Uzbekistan prospects light heavyweight Gayrat Ahmedov (12-0-1, 8 KOs) and Ravshan Hudaynazarov (9-0, 6 KOs), making their United States debuts.

“We’re building our promotional company to compete with the best in the business,” Chingis added. “When Beibut has a fight, the rest of Team KZ pulls together and takes care of business, so he can train properly. My brother’s success has brought attention to KZ Event Productions and we’ve been able to sign some great prospects like Gayrat and Ravshan. We’re very excited to have them both in our stable of future champions. Gayrat fought on our last two shows and Ravshan made his Team KZ debut on our last card. This is going to be a big night for the Shumenov brothers and everybody associated with KZ Event Productions.”

“Campillo vs. Shumenov II” is being presented by KZ Event Productions and Golden Boy Promotions with Campillo vs. Shumenov presented in association with Sampson Boxing LLC. The bout will be televised live on Fox Sports Net (FSN) and its regional sports network affiliates beginning at 11 pm ET / 8 pm PT (check local listings). Doors will open at 6 pm and the first bell rings at 7 pm.

In the event’s opening televised 10-round bout, former Cuban amateur star Erislandy Lara (9-0, 5 KOs) faces veteran junior middleweight Grady Brewer (26-11, 15 KOs), winner of The Contender II reality television show.
