Hector Ramirez Added to Tachi Palace Fights 3 Lineup

Lemoore, Calif. – As the old saying goes, “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade” and Tachi Palace Fights did just that on Monday when it found out that it’s main event on February 4 had to be scraped.

Tachi Palace Fights learned on Monday that it’s first-ever title fight had to be canceled. The lightweight title showdown between Lemoore, Calif.’s Poppies Martinez (17-6) and Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.’s Gabe Ruediger (15-5) had to be cut from the card when Martinez had to withdraw because of an injury.

“It’s an unfortunate situation. This was a big fight that a lot of people on the West Coast were looking forward to,” Tachi Palace Fights matchmaker Richard Goodman said. “I think this is still a bout we can put together in the future and Gabe being the professional that he is was willing to stay on the card and fight, despite the change.”

Goodman and Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino Entertainment Coordinator Jeremy Luchau wasted little time looking for a bout to bolster the fight card when the departure of Martinez, who has been a mainstay at the Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino, the former home to both the Palace Fighting Championship and World Extreme Cagefighting.

The first change was making a featherweight special attraction bout between Fresno, Calif.’s Isaac De Jesus (8-1) and Westminister, Calif.’s Nam Phan (15-6) a five-round title fight for the featherweight strap.

“It was an easy decision for us. We wanted to have a pair of title fights on the card and we knew that we still wanted to match Poppies and Gabe down the road, so it seemed logical to make Isaac and Nam a title fight,” Luchau said.

But Tachi Palace Fights’ officials didn’t stop there, as the biggest announcement on Monday came with the signing of Orange County, Calif.’s Hector Ramirez (8-3-1) for a middleweight showdown with Coarsegold, Calif. Anthony Ruiz (23-13).

Ramirez is an Ultimate Fighting Championship veteran and was a coach for Team Rampage on the latest season of Spike TV’s hit show “The Ultimate Fighter”.

“I’m very excited to be fight for an established organization like Tachi. I will be making my 185-pound debut. I don’t know much about my opponent, but I’m sure it will be exciting,” Ramirez said. “I want to thank all my sponsors and all my fans to continuing to support me.”

Ruiz just recently made the drop to 185 pounds and earned the biggest win in his mixed martial arts career with a decision victory over UFC vet Xavier Foupa-Pokam (20-12).

“I always get called for these types of tough fights, but at least I have six to seven weeks to prepare for this one. I think that (Ramirez) is very beatable. He’s fought a lot of average guys and I think we are at the same level,” Ruiz said.

“I think in this fight I will get a chance to exchange and bang a little more than the last one. I will do what I always do for every fight and that is keep coming and coming and be relentless and wear him out late in the fight.”

Ruiz is a veteran of nearly 40 fights and fought a who’s who in the MMA world from heavyweight to middleweight, which includes fights with Vladimir Matyushenko, Trevor Prangley, Bobby Southworth, Brad Imes and Gan McGee.

“I’m really excited for this fight. I love to fight out at the Tachi Palace. The rooms are great and I like how the weighins are right there on location. I just have to show up and dance,” Ruiz said.

The Tachi Palace Fights World Bantamweight title fight between Fresno, Calif.’s Cole Escovedo (14-4) and Duluth, Ga.’s Jeff Bedard (12-2) was elevated to the main event.

And in another big bout, Oakdale, Calif. bantamweight Michael MacDonald (8-1) takes on WEC veteran Chico, Calif.’s Manny Tapia (10-3-1).

Also in action is Las Vegas, Nev. lightweight David Bollea (1-0), who is the nephew of professional wrestling super star Hulk Hogan. Bollea’s opponent has not been determined.

“This card just keeps getting better and better each week,” Goodman said. “The Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino and its tribal management and tribal council at the Santa Rosa Rancheria have really dedicated themselves to MMA and putting on some of the best fights in the state.”

WCF February Fight Card Shaping Up

Boston Mass. Decenber 15, 2009 –

World Championship Fighting today announced four featured fights for their upcoming show, dated Friday, February 26th at the Shriner’s Auditorium in Wilmington, Mass.

In what promises to be a war, Pro-Elite/Elite-XC Veteran Fred Belleton makes his return to World Championship Fighting when he takes on the Team Santos product, Keith Jefferey. When Belleton last fought for WCF, he was victorious in one of the night’s featured fights with a viscous head kick KO. While this is Jefferey’s WCF debut, he’s no stranger to MMA and has been one of the very best 185 pounders in New England for years. A match up like this is truly not something you see too often.

Two of New England’s top ranked 145 pound fighters are set to meet at WCF 9. Justin Homsey is set to face undefeated rising star Saul Almeida in what could be a match up of the area’s best submission aces. Both fighters have won the majority of their fights by submission and both are out to prove they have the best Jiu-Jitsu in the weight class.

Also included on the WCF8 fight card is a fight between two of WCF’s most popular and exciting fighters, John Benoit and Noah Weisman. Three plus years in the making, Dan Mullarkey looks to get even with Jamie Campbell this Friday night.

Espinal of Brooklyn, NY has a record of 6-11-3 with two knockouts has been matched extremely tough but is very capable of pulling off the upset.

In Espinal’s last ten bouts he is 0-9-1 but the combined record of those opponents is 56-9.

In 2007, Espinal scored the best win of his career when scored a four round stoppage over then undefeated Jimmy Campbell (10-0).

Mark “TNT” Tucker Retains Title in Westminster!

Westminster, MD – In front of 2,500 boisterous fans at the Shipley Arena, Mark “TNT” Tucker retained his USBO Light Heavyweight championship Friday night with a hard fought ten round unanimous decision over wily veteran George “El Gallo” Armenta of Silver Spring, MD.

With a group of US Marines leading his loudly cheered ring walk, Tucker controlled the opening two frames by ripping Armenta with hard jab-straight left hand combinations. The hard charging Armenta had some success in the middle rounds with short right hands, but with the guidance of special assistant trainer Buddy McGirt, Tucker shook off a few rough moments to box effectively.

Armenta continued applying pressure in the late rounds with hopes of a one punch knockout, but the gutsy Tucker used an arsenal of heavy body punches along with straight left hands to the head while battling through a reoccurring in-fight hand injury to secure the victory.

Judge Gary Camponeschi scored the contest 98-92, while John Gradowski and Don Risher both had it 96-94 for Tucker, who also prevailed on scorecards of ringside media outlets.

“It was a great fight, he kept coming and was very tough”, said Tucker, who hails from nearby Eldersburg. “I got hit with a few punches I shouldn’t have, so I had to make adjustments to take charge and pull out the fight.”

Tucker improves to 13-0 with 7 KO’s, while the game Armenta falls to 13-5 (11 KO’s). Tucker’s next bout is tentatively scheduled for March 27 in Newark, NJ.

On the undercard, Jamar “The Truth” Freeman earned a unanimous decision victory over Omar Sims, while Garrett Wilson and Vincent Batteast pulled out close points victories over Adam Willet and Allen Perkins.

The four fight card was promoted by TNT Promotions 21, who worked hand in hand with Marine Toys for Tots to generate hundreds of donations from fans in attendance for needy children.

Since their inaugural card in February 2009, TNT Promotions 21 helped spring boxing to life in Northern Maryland. They have hosted six shows at the Shipley Arena, bringing in a large each time. TNT 21 also has the exclusive promotional rights to USBO Light Heavyweight champion Mark Tucker.

Hot middleweight prospect Michael Oliveira Added to Dec. 18th card in Haiti

MIAMI (Dec. 14, 2009) – Fresh off of his impressive first-round stoppage of Gustavo De La Cruz last week in the Dominican Republic, unbeaten Brazilian middleweight prospect “Chairman of the Board” Michael Oliveira (10-0, 8 KOs) has been added to Friday night’s (Dec. 18) pro card at the Karibe Convention Center in Petionville, Haiti.

The 19-year-old Oliveira, a student at Miami Dade Community College, was born in Brazil but lives and fights out of Miami. The charismatic teenager is matched against dangerous Dominican puncher Edvardo Mercedes (5-2, 5 KOs) in an 8-round bout.

The power-punching Oliveira is being groomed as the heir apparent to Brazilian boxing star Acelino “Popo” Freitas, 4-time world champion, who retired two years ago.

They’re away from home during the holidays, serving their country, and this fight will give them a feeling of home and Brazilian pride with one of their own in the ring. The Perfect Storm Tavoris Cloud

NORTH MIAMI BEACH (Dec. 14, 2009) – Undefeated IBF light heavyweight champion Tarvoris Cloud (20-0, 18 KOs) has become the Rodney Dangerfield of boxing – he can’t get any respect, especially from “Bad” Chad Dawson, allegedly the top dog in the 175-pound division.

“Chad Dawson won’t be able to run 12 rounds against me,” Cloud said. “My pressure will be unbelievable and I hit hard with both hands. He’ll have to stand and fight and that will be his ultimate demise. We’re totally different. If I went around saying I could beat the No. 1 contender, like Chad did when I was the No. 1, I’d fight him to prove it.

“I’m baffled, I guess, more than frustrated. All my life watching boxing, I thought the champion had to fight the next available, most deserving challenger, or unify the title. I was the No. 1 contender and he was the champ, but that’s when all the politics of boxing came in – extensions and exceptions – and his promoter lobbied to duck this hungry fighter. I understand the promoter building a fighter and arranging puff fights for more money. At some point, though, a real fighter has to fight the best. You can’t be great just fighting hand-picked, over-the-hill guys.”

Cloud, fighting out of Tallahassee (FL), has beaten everybody put in the ring against him during his perfect 4 1/2–years pro career. He’s fresh, entertaining and throws nearly 100 punches a round, something practically unheard of from a light heavyweight. The Ring magazine has him rated No. 6 but he still hasn’t been able to get Dawson into a fight because, reportedly, Tavoris isn’t well enough known by fans to justify a fight against Dawson on HBO.

What’s Cloud have to do?

His last four opponents – Clinton Woods (DEC12), Julio Cesar Gonzalez (TKO10), Mike Wood (KO1) and Jacob Rodriguez (RTD3) – have either officially retired or simply haven’t fought since being ‘rained on’ by Cloud.

After stopping Wood in the first round of their March 28, 2008 fight in Chicago for the USBA and NABA titles, Cloud became the No. 1 IBF contender and he then took out former WBO titlist Gonzalez in the 11th round of their Aug. 8, 2008 IBF Title Eliminator to become the mandatory challenger for the then reigning Dawson.

Dawson was first supposed to defend his IBF strap against Cloud by January 8, 2009, but Dawson was granted an exception to fight Antonio Tarver in a rematch last March. Dawson won and the IBF mandated that he fight Cloud by May 1, 2009 or be stripped of his title. Rather than take on Cloud, Dawson relinquished his IBF title belt after Tavoris refused to fight a non-title bout against another opponent, not Dawson, on an HBO show. Cloud’s promoter, Richie Boy Promotions, declined the offer and promoted a fight for the then vacant IBF crown between Cloud and former IBF champion, Clinton Woods, who Tavoris impressively defeated by unanimous 12-round decision (116-112 scoring by all three judges).

After defeating Woods, HBO offered Cloud a spot on its network against Dawson or in the co-feature on a show headlined by Dawson, whose promoter, Gary Shaw, once again, refused to fight Tavoris or even allow Chad to fight on the same HBO card.

Team Cloud believes there’s another reason why Dawson won’t fight Cloud and it doesn’t have anything to do with purse structures or name recognition. “Back in 2001,” Cloud’s head trainer Al Bonanni explained, “Dawson and Cloud were both outstanding amateurs. They sparred in 2001 at the U.S. Olympic training camp. Tavoris floored Dawson and hurt his eye. After that, Dawson was moved down to 168 pounds, instead of competing with Cloud at 175. Dawson still fears Tavoris Cloud and that’s why he won’t get in the ring with him. We’re willing to fight Dawson or any of the top light heavyweights in the world.”

Cloud hopes to defend his IBF title in the first-quarter of 2010 against WBC champion Jean Pascal in a unification bout, or, there’s always the possibility of fighting one of the over 40 greats such as Bernard Hopkins, Roy Jones, Jr., Glen Johnson and Antonio Tarver.

If Dawson ever mans-up, that deal can still be made but, like Dangerfield, right now Cloud ‘can’t get no respect!’

“I think Dawson will fight me in the not too distant future,” Cloud added. “As long as I keep winning impressively in exciting fights, fans will call for it. I don’t understand his logic (for not fighting Tavoris) because I’m not that type of fighter. I want to fight the best and it doesn’t matter if they’re boxers, punchers or southpaws. That’s the way to be great. One world title belt isn’t enough for me; I want more.”
