A cross-over star who also has made a name for himself in Hollywood, the popular Le has never lost a fight in his decorated career as a professional. He‘s perfect in MMA, kickboxing (22-0) and Sanshou (17-0).

Le, who recently relinquished his STRIKEFORCE belt to concentrate on a movie career – his latest flick, Pandorum, was released recently and another movie, Tekken, is due out soon — will be making his first start since dismantling the renowned Frank Shamrock on March 29, 2008, at HP Pavilion.

In an impressive performance, Le kicked the daylights out of Shamrock, breaking Shamrock’s arm in the process of winning by third-round TKO. Shamrock could not come out for the fourth round.

The 5-foot-10, 37-year-old Le was born in Saigon, South Vietnam, and moved to San Jose when he was 10. In 1994, he had his first amateur fight and turned pro in 1998. His main concentrations were in Sanshou and kickboxing until 2005. His MMA debut came in March 2006. Smith, of Sacramento, Calif., has won two of three and registered 13 knockouts in his 16 victories.

Souza, a 2008 Dream Middleweight Grand Prix runner-up, is a submission wizard who signed with STRIKEFORCE earlier this year. “Jacare,” which is Portuguese for the species of alligator that inhabit Manaus, the town in Brazil where he was born, took up Jiu Jitsu at the age of 17.

The talented, six-foot-tall, 29-year-old Souza held MMA legend Randy “The Natural” Couture to a draw in a grappling contest in 2006 and, shortly thereafter, began training at Xtreme Couture. He has long since returned to training in his homeland.

Souza established his position as a top tier 185-pounder after placing second in the 2008 Dream single elimination tournament in Japan. Souza, who won a decision over “Mayhem’’ Miller earlier in the Dream Grand Prix, is coming off a no-contest with “Mayhem’’ in his most recent start on May 26, 2009. Souza had won eight in a row before losing to world-class, top-five middleweight, Gegard Mousasi, in his outing before last in the finals of the Dream tourney on Sept. 23, 2008.

Lindland is the 2000 Olympic Games silver medalist who holds wins against Pat Miletich, former UFC welterweight champion Carlos Newton and Jeremy Horn. The comebacking Lindland is one of only two men to submit Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Travis Lutter.

Lawler, who fights out of Granite City, Ill., is known for utterly destroying opponents with an aggressive, unbashful, swing-for-the-fences, almost, at times, reckless style of fighting. A southpaw who has never turned down a fight, Lawler possesses enormous punching power, usually aimed at an opponent’s head.

A fan favorite who matches the strength behind his punches with unexpected flying knee kicks, the 5-foot-11, 27-year-old has long been regarded as one of the world’s top middleweights. Since October 2006, EliteXC’s last middleweight belt-holder and former two-time ICON Sport middleweight titlist is 5-1 with one no-contest.

The charismatic, outspoken “King Mo’’ will be making his United States debut after fighting five times in Japan where the 5-foot-11, 28-year-old of Temecula, Calif., by way of Mufiesboro, Tenn., became an instant fan favorite and is extremely popular.

A former three-time U.S. Senior National and NCAA wrestling champion, “King Mo’’ turned pro on Sept. 28, 2008.

“King Mo,’’ whose public feud with Quinton “Rampage’’ Jackson has been well-documented, has won four of his five pro fights by knockout (punches), three in the first round. In his last outing, a member of “Team Thirsty” and “Team GDP” required all of 25 seconds to dispatch of Mark Kerr.

NUREMBERG, Germany LAS VEGAS (November 7, 2009) – Two-time World Boxing Association (WBA) heavyweight champion John “The Quietman” Ruiz did exactly what he was supposed to do tonight in Germany, stopping former IBU title-holder Adnan “Aachen Assassin” Serin, to set the stage for a 2010 world title fight against new WBA champion David “Hayemaker” Haye.

WBA No. 1 contender Ruiz (44-8-1, 29 KOs) had agreed with the promoters for defending champion Nicolai Valuev and challenger Haye to “step aside” as the WBA “Official Challenger.” Ruiz, provided he defeated Serin (19-11-1, 7 KOs), was guaranteed a title bout against the Valuev-Haye winner by the end of May, 2010. Haye defeated Valuev by a 12-round majority decision.

Ruiz, the first and only world heavyweight champion of Latino heritage, fought for the first time in 14 months and at his lightest weight (226) in six years. Fighting for the first time with head trainer/cutman Miguel Diaz in his corner, Ruiz displayed a much more aesthetically pleasing, aggressive style – no holding, clutching or grabbing.

Ruiz outclassed Serin from the opening bell until Serin’s corner threw in the towel at 1:34 of the seventh round. John came out strong, using a stiff jab to set-up punishing rights to Serin’s body, but “The Quietman” suffered a cut to his forehead, near the bridge of his nose, from an apparent head-butt in the fourth round. Ruiz picked up the pace, hurting Serin in the sixth, and unloaded six straight damaging right hands to Serin’s head, leading to an 8-count in the seventh. Four more rights resulted in the referee halting the action, after a towel was thrown into the ring from Serin’s cornerman.

ATLANTIC CITY (NOVEMBER 7, 2009)–it will be a tremendous night of championship boxing from Ballys in Atlantic City as the fighter regarded as the top prospect in America, Mike “MJ” Jones will take another step towards fighting for the Welterweight title when he battles the rugged Raul Pinzon for Jones’ NABA Welterweight title.

Billy Evangelista Defeats Jorge Gurgel, Shane Del Rosario Remains Undefeated At STRIKEFORCE Challengers

FRESNO, CALIF. (November, 6, 2009) – One night before the monumental CBS/ STRIKEFORCE/M-1 GLOBAL SATURDAY NIGHT FIGHTS Fedor vs. Rogers event LIVE on the CBS Television Network, hometown favorite Billy Evangelista defeated Jorge Gurgel via unanimous in the main event of Strikeforce Challengers on Friday night on SHOWTIME.

The two lightweights traded punches from the opening bell until the waning seconds of the first round when Evangelista (10-0) took Gurgel to the mat. But, in the final 30 seconds of the second round, Gurgel landed a powerful left kick that sent Evangelista to the mat. Just when it looked as if Gurgel (13-6) was about to submit get Evangelista with a guillotine choke, the Fresno native was able to escape with just a few tics remaining.

The third round featured some back-and-forth action, and Evangelista won by scores of 30-27, 30-27, 29-28.

”The guy is tough, it was exactly what I expected,” Evangelista said. “He was very aggressive; I have to take my hat off to him. He almost had me with the guillotine, but I was able to get out. It was a great fight, what else can I say?

Gurgel was clearly disappointed with his performance.

“Billy fought a great fight,” Gurgel said after the fight to SHOWTIME MMA expert commentator Stephen Quadros. “I expected to get booed. I just wanted to get some respect from the crowd, and I think I got that.”

While Quadros was impressed with Evangelista’s showing, he argued that Gurgel looked great, even in losing.

“It was everything we expected it to be,” Quadros said. “Evangelista showed a lot of guts in this because he had to fend off the wild hits and submission attempts from Gurgel. He showed a lot of heart in this fight.

“But, based on his performance, even in this loss, people still want to see Jorge Gurgel.”

In an explosive fight that few thought would go past the first round, Shane Del Rosario (9-0) defeated local favorite Brandon Cash “Money” (5-1) via first round submission in a matchup of two hard-hitting heavyweights.

After getting floored with a sweeping hook from Cash, Del Rosario was in trouble early, taking an onslaught of punches while on the mat. But, the undefeated prospect was able to get up and turn things around, getting the previously unbeaten Cash into an omoplata and ending things at 2:57 of the first round.

“That was pretty good,” Del Rosario said. “I knew he was going to come out swinging. He caught me pretty good, but I bounced back. I’ve been working on submissions a lot, and I was able to get one here.”

Rising middleweight star Luke Rockhold defeated fellow 185-pound prospect Jesse Taylor via rear naked choke in the first round in the third SHOWTIME televised fight of the evening. The fight almost immediately went to the mat, with both fighters attempting submissions. Rockhold (6-1) was able to get Taylor into the rear naked choke, and with Taylor (13-5) refusing to give up and unable to escape, the referee ended the fight at 3:42 of the first round.

“That was by far my toughest opponent, and I rose to the occasion,” Rockhold said. “I think I proved myself tonight, and I’m ready for whoever they give me next. I tried to keep the fight standing up, but I trained with a lot of wrestlers and I was ready for it. “

In the quickest fight of the evening, Merritt Warren (5-2) defeated Thomas Diagne (1-1) via heel hook submission. With both fighters grappling on the mat, Warren got Diagne, who initiated the takedown, in a heel hook, forcing the French San Shou champion to tap out at 3:49 of the first round.

“This guy had crazy kicks, but I was more technically sound,” Warren said. “I landed some really powerful shots on the floor. I went for it, he was really slick and I couldn’t get a hold of him, but I got the heel hook and I went for it.”

In a hard fought female MMA match, Fresno native Zoila Frausto (4-0) defeated Elisha Helsper (0-2) via unanimous decision. Both fighters wanted to stand and trade punches, but the fight turned in Frausto’s favor in the second round when she landed a devastating right leg kick to Helsper’s face.

“My head kick really turned it around for me,” Frausto said. “I knew she was going to be tough. She kept coming, but I fought back. We both wanted to stand there and trade.

“I’ve been working on my kicks forever and I’m just happy I landed it right.”

Also during the telecast, former Strikeforce middleweight champion Cung Le announced that he would return to the ring on the Dec. 19 STRIKEFORCE event on SHOWTIME.

“I’ve been staying in good shape and I’m ready to get back in there for the fans,” Le said. “I’ll be fighting for Strikeforce on Dec. 19.”

STRIKEFORCE Challengers is a proving ground for up-and-coming MMA fighters. The series is designed to provide today’s top prospects with the opportunity to step-up their level of competition and demonstrate their ability in a nationally televised event.
