LOS ANGELES, August 18 – It’s the biggest and one of the most highly-anticipated boxing events of 2009, so there was no question that when it was time to compile the undercard of the Floyd “Money” Mayweather vs. Juan Manuel “Dinamita” Marquez super fight at MGM Grand in Las Vegas Saturday, Sept. 19, it was decided to bring out the big guns with three spectacular televised undercard bouts on HBO Pay-Per-View®, including two world championship fights.

In the chief support bout, unbeaten Chris John will defend his WBA Featherweight World Championship against one of the most courageous warriors in the game, 2000 Olympic Silver Medalist Rocky Juarez, in a rematch of their February 28, 2009 fight which is seen as one of 2009’s most compelling battles thus far. The WBO Interim Lightweight World Championship will be up for grabs on September 19 when Australian action hero and former Lightweight World Champion Michael Katsidis and 2004 U.S. Olympian and hot lightweight contender Vicente Escobedo collide in the ring in what looks like a can’t-miss brawl. Opening the HBO Pay-Per-View portion of the card will be a 10-round matchup of welterweight veterans, as former Undisputed Welterweight World Champion Zab Judah takes on the always exciting banger, veteran Antonio Diaz.

“The Mayweather-Marquez fight card is definitely living up to the hype of Floyd’s comeback,” said Leonard Ellerbe, CEO of Mayweather Promotions. “With three more excellent fights being shown on the telecast, fans are in for a great night of boxing from start to finish.”

“Mexican Independence Day Weekend is one of the biggest boxing weekends of the year and with the Mayweather-Marquez mega-fight as the headliner, we wanted to make sure that we have a full night of hard-hitting action which is what we have with the September 19 undercard,” said Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar de la Hoya. “In these three fights we have two World Championships, three current or former World Champions, three Olympians and an exciting rematch of one of this year’s greatest fights. As a fan, I can’t wait to see these fights and the fans will not want to miss this card whether it’s live in Las Vegas or at home on Pay-Per-View.”

Long considered one of the most talented, yet underrated, champions in the sport, Indonesia’s Chris “The Dragon” John (42-0-2, 22 KO’s) finally broke through to the U.S. audience in 2009 with his exciting battle with Rocky Juarez. A world champion since 2003 who has defended his crown 11 times including victories over Juan Manuel “Dinamita” Marquez and Derrick “Smoke” Gainer, John is eager to build on his newfound fame with a victory over Juarez on September 19.

“I thought I won our first fight but now I am going to show how much I appreciate being champion and beat him again,” said John. “It has always been my desire to fight in Las Vegas and on the big fight cards. September 19 I will be able to do this and show the whole world that I am one of the best pound for pound fighters in the sport today.”

Hard-charging Houston native Ricardo Rocky Juarez (28-4-1, 20 KO’s) has made a home for himself at the top of the featherweight division for many years now. The only thing missing for the 29-year-old is a world title and after just falling short in competitive wars with Humberto “Zorrita” Soto, Marco Antonio “Barreta” Barrera (twice) and Juan Manuel Marquez, Juarez put it all together in his first bout against John on February 28, 2009, only to have the judges score the fight a draw. The second time around, Juarez vows to bring everything he has to the ring as he looks to take home a world championship belt.

“I am very fortunate to have another chance at a world title and a chance to show the world why I feel like I did enough to win the first fight, said Juarez. “I am getting older and therefore it becomes even more important to reach my long-standing goal of becoming a world champion.”

The pride of Toowoomba, Australia, Michael “The Great” Katsidis (25-2, 21 KO’s) has gained worldwide acclaim as one of boxing’s most exciting fighters, punch for punch and pound for pound. The former interim WBO Lightweight World Champion, Katsidis has been in with some of the best in the world over his eight-year career, including Joel “Cepillo” Casamayor and Juan “Baby Bull” Diaz. Winner of two in a row, including an April stoppage of former World Champion Jesus “Matador” Chavez, the 29-year-old Katsidis is ready to regain his title with a win over Escobedo.

“I just turned 29 and that is a great age for boxing, fighting for championships and I feel I am peaking right now with my power and ability,” said Katsidis. “I think we are both going to pull out everything to win the title on September 19, but I plan to win and it’s certainly going to be a great way to celebrate my birthday.”

At 27 years of age, 2004 U.S. Olympian Vicente Escobedo (21-1, 13 KO’s) is hitting his stride as a professional and is ready for his first world title opportunity. A native of Woodland, California, Escobedo has drawn comparisons to Oscar de la Hoya for his style and demeanor both in and out of the ring. After a three-fight stretch that has seen him impressively beat the previously undefeated Dominic Salcido and former World Champions Carlos “Famoso” Hernandez and Kevin “Flushing Flash” Kelley, there is no question that he’s ready for prime time.

“I am really looking forward to the opportunity to fight on this card as it falls on Mexican Independence Day and I will be fighting for all of the Mexican people out there,” said Escobedo. “It is for my first world title and I am training extremely hard because I know this is a great opportunity and my dream coming true. I can’t wait for the fight and I am ready to win.”

A charismatic wizard in the ring known to his fans as “Super Judah”, Brooklyn’s Zab Judah (37-6, 25 KO’s) is a Former Two-Division World Champion who got to the top not only because of his blazing speed, but also because of his fight-stopping power. Owner of a resume that includes victories over Micky Ward, Junior Witter, Demarcus Corley and Cory Spinks, the 31-year-old from Brooklyn has readied himself for a run at another world championship and the first fighter in his way is Antonio Diaz.

“I appreciate the opportunity to be able to fight on Floyd’s comeback show and I know I have a very tough opponent in Daiz,” said Judah. “I know he is the bigger guy but I intend to take advantage of his fighting style by boxing him all the way to the finish, whether it goes the distance or it’s a knockout. I will beat Antonio Diaz on September 19.

Antonio “Toño” Diaz (45-5-1, 27 KO’s) first made his name in the late ’90s in the light welterweight division with wins over the likes of Cory Spinks, Emanuel Augustus, Ivan Robinson and Omar Weis. Not content with settling on this an impressive resume, Diaz moved up to 147 pounds to do battle against Sugar Shane Mosley and Antonio Margarito, and after a three-year layoff from 2005 to 2008, he has won four in a row, putting him in fine form as he approaches the fight with Judah.

“I am looking forward to fighting Zab Judah and think it is a great challenge for me as I continue to comeback after my layoff,” said Diaz. “I have been feeling really good since I took the break and I am training very hard as my goal is to accept this challenge, beat Zab Judah and move on to the next challenge.”

MAYWEATHER’S CHARITY HAND TOUCHES VEGAS

Las Vegas (August 18)…Floyd Mayweather showed his champion spirit last Friday when he spoke with a group of teenagers from Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth (NPHY) at their Safe Place Drop-In Center in Las Vegas. Mayweather, who will meet Juan Manuel Marquez in the ring on September 19 at MGM Grand in Las Vegas and live on HBO Pay-Per-View®, was received by the NPHY group with great admiration and appreciation for taking time out of his training schedule to give them a message of hope and inspiration.

“It is great to have a professional athlete like Floyd Mayweather come in and teach our kids what it takes to rise to the top of his profession,” said Tim Mullin, NPHY Director of Operations.

The youth, who attend the NPYH life skill program once a week, were affected by Mayweather’s message and related to the Champion’s own trials and tribulations.

“Today was one of the most inspirational days of my life,” said Breanna Watkins, age 18. “It is not easy to keep your head up and push through the storm, but after today, I realize that no matter how much you struggle, it is possible to make it out on top. I really appreciate that Floyd Mayweather and his team took the time out of their schedules to give us words of encouragement.”

“Today I felt more inspired, no, I am more inspired to make a difference in this world,” said Dominique Contrevo, age 17. “Having the opportunity to meet all of these amazing people is reassuring that there is still good in this world.”

In addition to visiting the Safe Place Drop-In Center, Mayweather and his team frequently prepare hundreds of packed lunches for distribution to homeless people living on the streets and in makeshift tents throughout Central Las Vegas. Yet, the opportunity to interact with the youth living in these difficult conditions, is something he feels strongly about giving back to and it touched him in a different way.

“I have been fortunate enough to rise above what I was faced with as a young kid in Grand Rapids,” said Mayweather. “If even a fraction of what I said to these kids today can give them hope, then I have done what I came here to do.”

The Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth started in 2000 when a group of concerned community members formed a coalition to address the needs of abused, neglected and abandoned youth in the Las Vegas valley. The organization’s mission was, and continues today, to eliminate homelessness among Nevada’s youth. MCC: Making the Fighter, set to air episode 1, tonight on Mediacom ch 22, at 10pm

Making the Fighter, which began filming in June, followed MCC Interim Lightweight Champion, Joe “The Hammer” Brammer and up and coming brawler, Colby “The Alligator” Karaidos, as they prepare for upcoming bouts at MCC 22 “Reality Check,” Sept 5th at Vets Auditorium. The reality show will give an inside look at the intense training regimen that mixed martial arts fighters go through.

Los Angeles, CA (August 17, 2009) – Fresh off a stunning first-round knockout of highly-regarded heavyweight Travis Walker, Manuel “El Toro” Quezada (28-4-1, 18 KOs) has climbed the ladder in the World Boxing Council (WBC) rankings from last months #9 position to the #4 WBC heavyweight contender.

Quezada’s latest victory was the 17th straight for the 31-year-old, native of Wasco, CA, who was making the third defense of his WBC CABOFE title. In 2009 Quezada, who has displayed increased punching power since Joe Goossen took over as his trainer, has won all three of these fights by knockout – the last two coming in the opening round.

As the #4 contender in the WBC — whose champion is Vitali Klitschko — only former world champ Oleg Maskaev, Ray Austin and Goossen-Tutor stablemate and top-ranked Cristobal Arreola, are rated ahead of him.

Fallen-Onyango co-feature on HUGE night of boxing at the most famous venue in the world

Public Safety night will honor Police Officers, Firefighters and other security personnel in the Philadelphia area.

The card is promoted by Vernoca L. Michael and Blue Horizon Boxing Promotions Inc.

Chambers of Philadelphia has a record of 19-1-1 with five knockouts and is coming off nine month layoff where he battled a foot injury but is ready to get back in the ring on September 11th.

In his last bout, Chambers won a unanimous decision over Ben Ankrah last December 5th.

In one co-feature, Darren Fallen will battle Joshua Onyango in an eight round Jr. Middleweight bout

Fallen of Philadelphia has a record of 12-4-1 with six knockouts and is coming off two consecutive split decision victories over Carlos Pena. This will be Fallen’s fourth bout at The Legendary Blue Horizon (3-0)

Onyango has a vet deceiving record of 14-17-1 with eleven knockouts.

The native of Trenton, New Jersey via Lake Victoria, Kenya has been in with the very best in the world. The combined record of his opponents who have defeated Onyango is a staggering 254-17-3. To say he has been matched tough is an understatement as he has shared the ring with the likes of Paul Williams, Jose Luis Zertuche, Yuri Foreman, Terrence Cauthen and Carlos Quintana to name just a few,

Lost in all that, are a few signature victories such as a six round unanimous decision over Gabriel Rosado.

Onyango is coming off a six round unanimous decision defeat to Ed Paredes (20-2) on February 20th in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

This will be Onyango’s third appearance at The Legendary Blue Horizon and first since dropping an eight round unanimous decision to Cauthen (29-3) on April 7th, 2006.

In a six round Jr. Lightweight bout of Blue Horizon regulars, Joselito Collado will put his undefeated ledger on the line against Jules Blackwell.

Collado has a record of 8-0 with two knockouts and will be making his third straight and fourth overall appearance at The Legendary Blue Horizon.

The native of Queens, New York is coming off a six round unanimous decision over Darrell Martin (4-8) on May 15th.

Blackwell is back after a nine month layoff when he was stopped by the same Darrell Martin in three rounds at The Legendary Blue Horizon.

The native of Phoenixville, PA has a record of 8-2-2 with three knockouts. This will be Blackwell’s tenth appearance at The Legendary Blue Horizon (7-2, 2 KO’s)

Popular Israeli Jr. Welterweight Elad Shmouel will return on September 11th against an opponent to be named in a scheduled six round bout.

The native of Tel Aviv sports an impressive record of 19-2 with ten knockouts.

Shmouel came back on February 6th to The Legendary Blue Horizon to stop Khristian Geraci in two rounds.

That was his first bout since his epic fight with Lenn DeVictoria which took place fourteen months earlier. This will be Shmouel’s eighth appearance at The Legendary Blue Horizon (6-1, 2 KO’s)

In a four round Lightweight bout, Isaac Suarez (7-0, 2 KO’s) of Lancaster, PA battles Mondre Pope (1-0-1) of Virginia.

In a four round Welterweight bout, Joe Alonzo of Philadelphia makes his pro debut against Cleveland school teacher, William Brown (4-3, 2 KO’s)

Fresh off his Pro debut knockout on May 15th, heavyweight Makiti Ku-Tima will see action in four round bout against an opponent to be named.

Richard Brown (4-0, 2 KO’s) of Fort Lauderdale, Florida will take on Kevin Hood (5-11-1) of Coatsville, PA in a four round Heavyweight affair.

In a four round Jr. Welterweight bout, Ruslan Khayrtdinov (3-0, 1 KO) of Brooklyn, New York will take on an opponent to be announced.

Popular ladies welterweight, Jackie Davis (2-0, 1 KO) will take on Victoria Cisneros (3-6-2) of Albuquerque, New Mexico in a ladies Welterweight bout

Rounding out the card will be Philadelphia welterweight, Darrell Jones (1-0, 1 KO) in a four round bout against an opponent to be named and Phillip McCants (7-1-1, 3 KO’s) of Philadelphia in separate bouts.
