Campillo awarded controversial decision against game Shumenov

ASTANA, Kazakhstan (August 16, 2009) – Previously unbeaten Beibut Shumenov lost a highly controversial 12-round decision last night to WBA light heavyweight champion Gabriel Campillo that left the crowd upset when announced at the Sport Complex “Daulet” National Tennis Center in Astana, Kazakhstan.
The show was presented by KZ Event Productions, owned and operated by the Shumenov brothers, Beibut and Chingis.
On the scorecards, Campillo-Shumenov was a majority draw going into the 12th and final round, in which, Campillo (19-2, 6 KOs) caught Beibut (8-1, 6 KOs) midway through the final round that felled the off-balanced Shumenov, which turned out to be the deciding factor.
Judge John Coyle scored the fight 114-113, Glenn Feldman 114-112, Pasquale Procopio 115-111. Questionable scoring resulted in Campillo being in position to win the fight by taking the last three rounds on two judges’ scorecards, as well as two of three by the other judge. Most observers at the fight had Beibut winning.
“Shumenov is a great boxer,” said road warrior Campillo, who won the title this past June against Hugo Hernan Garay in Argentina. “He will be world champion.”
Shumenov, reigning IBA World champion, floored Campillo with a spectacular counter left-hook at the end of the ninth round.
“Everyone thought Beibut won the fight,” promoter Chingis Shumenov remarked after the fight. “All we wanted was a fair shake and we were surprised by the final scores. Beibut will be back stronger than ever.”
Uzbekistan prospect Gayrat Ahmedov (12-01, KOs) stopped Douglas “Daggy” Otieno (19-2, 9 KOs) at 2:14 of the opening to win the vacant WBC Asian Pacific and PABA light heavyweight titles. Ahmedov, 4-time Uzbekistan National amateur champion, drilled Otieno with a vicious left hook to the body that disabled the Kenyan.
Former WBO light welterweight champion Demarcus “Chop Chop” Corley’s (35-11, 21 KOs) comeback continued versus “Jessie” James Kimori (11-2, 7 KOs) by eighth-round knockout. An outworked and weakened Kimori, who had had been floored for an 8-count in the sixth round, came out for the final round and Corley immediately unloaded a devastating right hook that put his opponent to sleep on his back as the fight was halted.
Uzbekistan light middleweight prospect Ravshan Hudaynazarov (9-0, 6 KOs), 2007 World Military Games gold medalist, kept his unbeaten pro record intact with a first-round knockout of Joseph “Mish” Miyumo (30-8-5, 17 KOs), former ECAPBG champion. Hudaynazarov trapped Miyumo on the ropes midway through the opening frame, unloading a barrage of punches that put the Kenyan down twice, the last for the final time as he was counted out.

SAN JOSE, Calif. (Aug. 16, 2009) – In the biggest, most important and highly anticipated fight in the history of women’s mixed martial arts, Cris Cyborg registered a brutal 4:59, first-round TKO (punches) over Gina Carano before a raucous 13,524 at HP Pavilion here Saturday on SHOWTIME.
For as long as it lasted, the Cyborg-Carano fight was as exciting as it gets. By winning, Cyborg (8-1), of Curitiba, Brazil, earned the first-ever Strikeforce Female 145-pound Championship. Carano, of Las Vegas, fell to 7-1.
The historic, non-stop action match between the two most talented female fighters in the world was stopped by referee Josh Rosenthal a split second before the horn sounded to end the opening round of a scheduled five-round fight.
When the thrilling proceedings were halted, Cyborg was on top of Carano and had delivered approximately 12 clubbing punches with both hands to Carano’s head.
“I just want to thank the fans for all the support I have always received, and to Gina for giving me this opportunity,’’ said a gracious but ecstatic Cyborg, who is a member of Brazil’s famed Chute Boxe fight squad.
Carano, an underdog in the wagering but clearly a crowd favorite, entered the ring to a deafening roar and the fans’ reaction to her introduction was seemingly as loud as one could possibly be.
The incredibly popular Carano gave as much as she took for the most part, but the aggressive-minded Cyborg proved to be too strong for the popular fighter who was making her first start in eight months.
In other televised fights Saturday on SHOWTIME: Gegard “The Dreamcatcher” Mousasi (29-2-1) of Leiden, Netherlands, was victorious for the 13th consecutive time, winning his United States debut and the Strikeforce light heavyweight title by destroying defending champion Renato “Babalu” Sobral (35-9) of Los Angeles via Brazil, at 1:00 of the first-round (TKO, strikes). Gilbert “El Nino” Melendez (16-2) of San Francisco by way of Santa Ana, Calif., avenged one of his two losses and retained the Strikeforce interim lightweight belt with a convincing third-round TKO (punches) over Mitsuhiro “Endless Fighter’’ Ishida (18-6-1) of Japan. Brazil’s Fabricio “Vai Cavallo’’ (12-4-1) Werdum moved closer to a possible world title fight against Fedor Emelianenko with a 1:24, first-round submission (guillotine) over Mike Kyle (12-7-1) of San Jose.
In the second of three Strikeforce world title fights, Mousasi threw a kick but Sobral blocked it and wound up on the ground in a scramble. Mousasi, who was in top position when they hit the ground, quickly unleashed a barrage of punches and that was that, ending Sobral’s five-fight winning streak.
“I am very happy,’’ Mousasi said. “I am willing to fight anybody.’’
Melendez mostly dominated. “The key to this fight was patience and I was patient tonight,’’ he said. “I know what kind of fighter Ishida was, and I knew what I had to do. It’s great to avenge a loss. But I am a different fighter than before.’’
In the opening bout of the telecast, Werdum overcame some early adversity to triumph impressively. “I trained hard and am happy with the result,’’ said Werdum, who resides in Huntington Beach, Calif.
A two-time Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu world champion who owns a victory over current Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem, Werdum would not be opposed to an immediate crack at Fedor.
Werdum has already defeated one of the Emelianenko brothers. On Nov. 12, 2006, he registered an impressive first round (3:24) submission (arm triangle choke) over two-time Russian National Sambo champion, Aleksander Emelianenko, brother of Fedor
“I would be very happy if Strikeforce wanted to make a fight between Fedor and myself. Fedor is the best in the world and this world be a fantastic opportunity.’’

Biloxi, Mississippi (August 15, 2009)—BJ Flores remained undefeated as he boxed well and Epifanio Mendoza retired at 1:19 of round FOUR retain his WBO NABO Cruiserweight title.
Flores dominated the fight as he boxed well over the first two rounds and it seemed he hurt his shoulder in the first moments of the round. Mendoza tried to get through the round but Flores jumped on Mendoza with terrific body work.
The fight was stopped at 1:19 of round FOUR for Flores, 200 lbs of Las Vegas and is now 24-0-1 with fifteen knockouts. Mendoza, 197 lbs of Barranquilla, Colombia is now 29-8-1.

Canadian Heavyweight Champion Kielsa Faces Biggest Test Yet

Heavyweight Giant Kevin Montiy to Face “Steel Pole” at Rumble at Rama IX
RAMA, ON (August 15, 2009) – With no challengers willing to step up on the domestic front yet again, Canadian Heavyweight champion Greg “The Steel Pole” Kielsa (10-0, 5 KO’s) will take on hulking American Kevin Montiy (17-6-1, 13 KO’s) on the Rumble at Rama IX undercard, September 4th, at Casino Rama, in Rama, Ontario.
The main event of Rumble at Rama IX pits defending WBO Junior Bantamweight champion Jose Lopez (39-7-2, 32 KO’s) against Philipino upstart “Marvelous” Marvin Sonsona (13-0, 12 KO’s), in what promises to be an all out war between one of the sport’s toughest world champions and one of its most promising stars.
In the evening’s co-feature, former IBF Junior Featherweight world champion, “The Canadian Kid” Steve Molitor (29-1, 11 KO’s) continues his quest for a second world title when he faces tough Argentine Sergio Escobar (11-8-1, 2 KO’s).
“We’re pleased to add a quality fight like Kielsa-Montiy to what already should be one of the most exciting cards anywhere this year,” said Alan Tremblay, president of Orion Sports Management.
“Greg (Kielsa) is a bright heavyweight prospect, but to become something in the sport you have to get past quality fighters like Montiy.”
After going the distance in three of his four fights in 2008, Kielsa has cranked it up in 2009, going 2-0, with 2 KO’s, against his toughest opposition yet.
In March, Kielsa defended his title with a devastating 8th round TKO over leading Canadian contender Arthur Cook, and followed it up with an equally crushing fourth round TKO over American Byron Polley.
The 34 year-old Montiy, from Flat Rock, Michigan, has been in with top heavyweights like former world title challenger Michael Grant, the man who retired the legendary “Iron” Mike Tyson, Kevin McBride, and hard-hitting contender Shane Cameron, and provides Kielsa with a crucial litmus test that must be passed with flying colors.
Kielsa’s Canadian title will not be on the line against Montiy.
Held in Casino Rama’s state-of-the-art 5,200 seat Entertainment Centre, the Rumble at Rama series has firmly established the Casino as the premier venue in which to see the Big Time Excitement of a world-class fight in Ontario. Rumble at Rama IX takes place on Friday, September 4th, with the undercard bouts getting underway at 8:00 pm.
The Molitor-Escobar fight and the WBO title match between Lopez and Sonsona will be shown on TSN in Canada, and both bouts will also be seen on national carrier coverage in both the Philippines and Puerto Rico.
