OVILL McKENZIE has won the Prizefighter Cruiserweights title after an exciting night of knockdowns and shocks.

Former Commonwealth Champion McKenzie defeated John Keeton on points in a thrilling final in front of a capacity crowd at the Earl’s Court in London to scoop the £25,000 top prize.
Every one of the eight fighters in the line-up had fought or held either a European, Commonwealth or British belt and it promised to be the best Prizefighter event so far.
The Sky Sports-televised show did not disappoint as there were six knockdowns before the final, the most in any of the seven Prizefighter events, with three contests not going the distance.
The final was between two outsiders as Keeton and McKenzie were priced at 16/1 and 12/1 respectively at the start of the competition.
Keeton, a former British Champion, was celebrating his 37th birthday but could not get the ideal present as he lost 28-29, 28-29, 27-30 in a hard-fought final.
McKenzie, who was drafted in as a late replacement for the injured Mark Krence, was the lightest of the fighters but that did not stop him performing at his best in one of the biggest nights in his career.
He had moved up from light-heavyweight to be in this competition and had only had two weeks notice. But he clinched the title thanks to victories over former IBF world title challenger Terry Dunstan and Darren Corbett before triumphing against Keeton.
It was an evening of big shocks as three of the four highly-fancied fighters lost in the first round before favourite Dean Francis suffered a surprise defeat in the first semi-final.
Francis had produced one of the best performances of the night when he dominated against Neil Simpson before it was stopped in the third round.
However, Francis, who was priced at 1/9 to make the final after the quarter-final, was floored twice in two and a half minutes against Keeton in the opening semi-final.
The other quarter-finals saw Keeton gain a points win over Bruce Scott and Darren Corbett do likewise against Micky Steeds.

TELEMUNDO’s STORY ON CARINA MORENO HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED TO MAY 22, 2009

Due to network rescheduling, Telemundo’s story on the life of four-time world champion, Carina “La Reina” Moreno, will now be televised this Friday May 22, 2009. All times remain the same. The story will air in the San Francisco, Fresno and Las Vegas during Telemundo’s (Channel 48) “Conteo De Noticias” at 6:00 PM and again at 11:00 PM. In other cities such as, Tucson, Phoenix, Dallas, San Antionio and Houston, the story will appear at 5:00 PM and 10:00 PM.

Pampering The Project
(Editor’s Note: Jeremy Luchau has been a journalist for 10 years and over the last four years wrote a column chronicling his training to become a mixed martial artist. This is the fourth Volume of the Writer to Fighter series)

There’s things that come up each and every week that really prohibit me from getting that grueling and intensive training camp that the pros get.
But hey, that’s all right, because I’m a fulltime dad and work a great job at the Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino as an Entertainment Coordinator. I’ve got other responsibilities and priorities in my life.
When the Palace Fighting Championship’s “Validation” came to fruition on May 8, I had to take a little time off the training schedule. And one week latter I found myself in a similar position as Gretchen Wilson put on a show May 15 and Ramon Ayala did his thing on May 17.
It was a busy, but exciting two weeks for me and I still managed to stick to my diet for the most part and keep my weight down at 170 pounds and also stick to a pretty strict training schedule.
I worked out three times a week with strength and conditioning coach Steve Novencido and VQ Fitness in Hanford, Calif.
Then I would either head to the Team Ochoa training facility and work with Jacob Jeff and Mike Martinez in Lemoore, Calif. or travel to the Lemoore Farmboyz wrestling practices to work with a pair of excellent wrestlers in Alex Perez and Nick Sierra.
My broken toe is healing up nicely and I’m feeling pretty strong at this part. These next two weeks I will spar some pretty tough rounds and do a lot of strength training.
Novencido has my whole workout program scheduled daily up until fight day. He wants to make sure my body peeks at the right time. He’s also asked me to make sure that I take care of my body a little better this time around, asking me to get massages etc.
I’ve done my best to kind of pamper myself, getting massages and pedicures to help with my feet. I know a lot of fighters that I’ve spoken to say they get both pedicures and manicures – as strange as that sounds.
The one thing that I still struggle with, though, and will probably bite me in the butt down the road is proper rest. I’m really only getting roughly six hours of sleep at night because of work and then training.
There’s only so much time in day for me to get everything done and each and every day I forget to do something.
It’s a real test for me to try and organize myself and my kids, work and training. And at the same time make sure I take my supplements at the right time and eat when I’m scheduled to eat.
It always amazes me that the casual mixed martial arts fan thinks just anyone can do MMA. That fighters just sign a fight contract, train for a few weeks and then hop in the ring or cage and fight, collect their check and then go party.
If it was only that easy?
Cage Combat matchmaker Richard Goodman also phoned me this week with some news.
“Jeremy, I have your opponent locked in,” he says.
“Kenny Florian,” I joked.
“I wish buddy, No, Carlos De Soto from Hanford said he would like to fight you,” Goodman replies.
I of course accept.
I don’t think I know anything about De Soto really. I immediately text Mike Martinez, because this guys trains at every gym all over the nation and ask him if he knows about him.
And as I guessed, he did.
“De Soto fought my boy Joe Morales from Samurai Dojo in a show earlier this year,” Mike explains. “This will be a good fight for you. You guys will match up pretty well. That’s a fight I would take if I were you.”
Next step was to look him up on Sherdog.com and see if I could find any info. There wasn’t much to go off of really other then that he lost to Morales at a Pure Combat Event in March of this year – TKO punches in two minutes, eight seconds of the first round.
Whatever the case, I still need to just keep improving my game. Focus on myself and getting myself ready to fight again after nearly a year out of the game.
These next two weeks will be a big test for my body, and me as I’ve worked pretty hard the last two months to get back in shape. So, I will push my body to the limit and hope to see some great results.

Gleason’s Gym Newsletter (5-19-09)

Greetings!
The gym will be closed on Monday, May 25th in honor of Memorial Day. We will reopen at 5:00AM on Tuesday, May 26, 2009.
Last Saturday’s Amateur show at Gleason’s was a great success. We had seventeen very exciting bouts, which included: six novice bouts, two open bouts, three female bouts and six master bouts.

The Gleason’s Gym 7th Annual Fantasy Boxing Camp will be at Kutsher’s Country Club in Monticello, New York over the Labor Day Weekend, September 4 through September 7, 2009.
The camp is open for anybody that likes boxing. Our youngest attendee was 12 and our oldest attendee was 76. There are professional and amateur boxers and businessmen and women boxers, and just plain fans of boxing that attend.

Heavyweight Showdown Precedes Lawler vs. Shields Main Event
Live on SHOWTIME from Scottrade Center In St. Louis on June 6
ST. LOUIS (May 19, 2009) – SHOWTIME announcer Jimmy Lennon Jr., announced today that top-10 ranked heavyweight and former UFC champion Andrei Arlovski will face unbeaten heavyweight sensation Brett “The Grim” Rogers on Saturday, June 6 at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis and LIVE on SHOWTIME.
The announcement was made at a kick-off press conference for STRIKEFORCE: Lawler vs. Shields at the Atrium at Scottrade Center. The heavyweight showdown, which will be sponsored by Affliction, will precede the main event fight between two of the most highly regarded fighters in the world, “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler and Jake Shields.
The event will be televised live on SHOWTIME® at 10 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).
Tickets for Strikeforce: “Lawler vs. Shields”, priced from $30, are on sale now at the Scottrade Center box office as well as at all Ticketmaster locations (800-745-3000), Ticketmaster online (www.ticketmaster.com), and Strikeforce’s official website (www.strikeforce.com).
Affliction’s Arlovski’s (15-6) fight resume includes a who’s-who of the heavyweight division with fights against Fedor Emelianenko and Tim Sylvia. Eleven of the 15 victories for the former UFC heavyweight champion have come by way of knockout. The undefeated Rogers is 9-0 with eight devastating knockouts and one submission. Only one of his fights has gone past the first round. The two stand-up specialists stand at 6-foot-4, so fans can expect an all-out slugfest.
Lawler, a world top-10 middleweight, is unbeaten in his last six (5-0 with 1 No Contest). Shields, a winner of 11 in a row, is ranked among the top five welterweights in the world. They will clash at a catch weight of 182 pounds.
The rest of the SHOWTIME portion of the June 6 event rounds out as follows:
Fresh off their respective thrilling wins in the premier of Strikeforce on SHOWTIME (April 11), the versatile Nick Diaz and knockout artist Scott “Hands of Steel” Smith will meet in a special 180-pound showdown.
Diaz, who shocked the MMA world with his complete dominance of four-time world champion Frank Shamrock, has shown tremendous versatility in recent fights, adding top-shelf striking ability to his well-known submission skills. Smith is coming off a stunning, come-from-behind KO of Benji “The Razor” Radach, in a fight that is sure to be a candidate for 2009 Fight of the Year.
“The New York Badass” Phil Baroni (13-10) will collide with Joe “Diesel” Riggs (29-10) in a 170-pound contest. Nine of Baroni’s 13 wins have come by knockout, so expect the brash, trash talking New Yorker to bang with Riggs. A former UFC contender, Riggs is a well-rounded fighter with 14 wins by knockout and 13 via submission. Their war of words in the press is ongoing. Expect an emotionally charged throw-down in this one.
Opening the SHOWTIME telecast, Kevin “The Monster” Randleman (17-12) will face Mike “Iron” Whitehead (23-6) in a 205-pound clash. Randleman, a former UFC standout who has been tested against some of MMA’s most recognizable names, will make his return to the cage and his Strikeforce debut. Whitehead is a knockout and submission specialists who has won 14 of his last 15 fights. Whitehead is in for his toughest fight to date.

LOS ANGELES, MAY 19 – The number 30…by itself, it doesn’t mean much, but to boxing superstars Floyd Mayweather and Juan Manuel Marquez, 30 is a very significant number, one that proves that among today’s active fighters, none can match their commitment to fighting the best. On Saturday, July 18, when Mayweather and Marquez step into the ring, it will be the 30th time these two fighters have faced a past, present, or future world champion.
