PROVIDENCE (May 18, 2009) – Super middleweight “Irish” Joe McCreedy has developed into one of New England’s favorite fighters, based on support he’s received from his growing legion of passionate fans from Lowell, the same Massachusetts city that produced one of boxing’s all-time most popular ring warriors, “Irish” Micky Ward.

EBA super middleweight champion McCreedy (10-2-1, 5 KOs) is matched against veteran Willis “The Prophet” Lockett (11-7-5, 5 KOs) on Friday night’s (May 22) “Rage At The River” show, promoted by Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment and Sports, Inc. (CES), at Twin River Event Center in Lincoln, Rhode Island.

McCreedy is as tough as any fighter, evident by his performances since his first loss. After starting out his career with victories in his first five pro bouts, Joe suffered his first lost in October of 2006 to Andre Hemphill. McCreedy’s jaw was broken early but he kept fighting until it was fractured in the second place, which resulted in the ending of the fight in the third round. Joe’s boxing career was in jeopardy but the former high school running back came back strong one a year and a half later to beat previously unbeaten Bay State rival Chris Traietti (7-0) by 6-round decision.

Two fights later, the now 24-year-old McCreedy lost a 6-round decision to Henry Mayes but Joe avenged that loss in his next fight, defeating Mayes by 6-round decision. A natural Irish-Italian, Massachusetts-Rhode Island throw-down was arranged between two CES boxers, McCreedy and Richard “Bobo the Bull” Starnino, last August in which the two fought non-stop, toe-to-toe to a 6-round draw. McCreedy then outclassed veteran Joe Johnson to set-up a rematch against Starnino this past February. In another fan-friendly brawl an even better conditioned McCreedy won an 8-round decision for the vacant Eastern Boxing Association title, much to the joy and delight of his many vociferous backers in the stands.

“Joe McCreedy is a brawler who fights like Vinny Paz and Micky Ward,” promoter Jimmy Burchfield said. “He gives fans their money’s worth every fight. He just keeps coming straight ahead and Joe’s very dangerous. I think he’s at the top of his game right now. His fan base is growing fast because he gives them what they enjoy. He’s fun to watch. There’s no such thing as a boring fight with Joe McCreedy.”

The 8-round main event puts world-rated light heavyweight Joey “KO Kid” Spina (24-1-1, 17 KOs), fighting out of Providence, against veteran Tiwon Taylor (26-14-1, 19 KOs), former Carolina Boxing Association title-holder, who has been in against world champions Adrian Diaconu, Fabrice Tiozzo and Lou Del Valle. Power-punching Spina is rated No. 12 in the WBA and WBC, No. 13 by the WBO and No. 15 by the IBF.

Middleweight James McGirt, Jr. (19-2-1, 9 KOs) makes his CES debut in a 6-round bout versus Patrtick “La Sasa” Perez (25-4, 14 KOs), while Ward works the corner for his nephew and another Lowell fighter, lightweight Sean Eklund (6-3, 1 KO), against Jose Guzman (3-4-1) in a 4-round match.

A 1996 Olympic Bronze medalist for the United States, Floyd “Money” Mayweather (39-0, 25 KO’s) has since gone on to strike Gold in the professional ranks, winning six world titles in five weight classes to firmly establish himself as one of the best fighters of his era. In just his 18th pro fight, Mayweather won his first world title at the age of 21 by stopping Genaro Hernandez for the WBC world super featherweight crown in 1998. The Grand Rapids, Michigan native defended that title eight times before moving up to lightweight and taking the 135-pound belt from Jose Luis Castillo in 2002, but “Money” Mayweather wasn’t done yet, as he defeated Arturo Gatti and Zab Judah for the junior welterweight and welterweight world titles, respectively. Despite these impressive achievements, it wasn’t until he defeated Oscar de la Hoya in May of 2007 for the world junior middleweight championship in a record-setting super-fight where the world truly got to see what Mayweather was all about. In his last fight, on December 8, 2007, Mayweather made another statement to the world when he knocked out Ricky “Hitman” Hatton in the tenth round, handing the British superstar his first professional defeat. After the bout, Mayweather – who has achieved crossover fame as a contestant on the hit show “Dancing with the Stars” and as a participant in WWE’s “Wrestlemania XXIV” – announced his retirement from boxing. But he left the door open for a return if the right challenge presented itself, and on July 18th, the 32-year-old Las Vegas resident comes back to face Juan Manuel Marquez.

In an era of great Mexican fighters such as Marco Antonio Barrera and Erik Morales, Mexico City’s Juan Manuel “Dinamita” Marquez (50-4-1, 37 KO’s) has made it clear over the last few years that he is truly the greatest of the bunch. Long revered by boxing purists as one of the best, Marquez won 29 of his first 30 pro bouts, before finally getting a world title shot in 1999. Marquez would lose that opportunity controversially to Freddie Norwood and in response, he didn’t lose for the next seven years, winning the IBF world featherweight title against Manuel Medina in 2003. In November 2003, Marquez unified the titles when he defeated Derrick “Smoke” Gainer and captured the WBA world featherweight title. His second title defense in 2004 against Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao may be his most memorable, as he rose from three first-round knockdowns to roar back and gain a draw in a fight that many observers believe he won. Marquez would lose his belt via decision to Chris John in 2006, but he returned to form almost immediately, scoring a 12-round win over Barrera in March of 2007 to win the WBC 130-pound world title. In 2008, Marquez and Pacquiao would meet again in another memorable bout however Marquez dropped a disputed 12-round split decision to the Filipino superstar. Undeterred, “Dinamita” moved up to the 135-pound weight class in September of 2008 and stunned the boxing world by handing Joel Casamayor his first knockout defeat to win the Ring Magazine world lightweight championship. It was hard to top such a victory, but in the 35-year-old Marquez’ most recent fight on February 28, 2009, he did just that as he stopped former Three-Time World Champion Juan Diaz in the ninth round to add the WBO and WBA World Lightweight belts to his trophy case. On July 18th he looks to further cement his legacy with a win over Mayweather.

PHILADELPHIA (May 17, 2009)—Joey “Minnesota Ice” Abell returned to the Legendary Blue Horizon with a emphatic third round knockout over Billy “The Kid” Willis to highlight a terrific seven bout card that highlighted “Health & Education Night”

Promoter Vernoca L. Michael honored local educators, Dr. Richard Englert (Business) and Dr. Michael Jackson (Director of Graduate programs of Sports & Recreation) of Temple University and local Neurologist, Dr. Emil Materese for their contributions to the community.

Abell dropped Willis early in round three from a left and quickly finished off Willis with another left at the fifty-four second mark of round three of their scheduled six round tussle.

With the win, Abell notched his fourth consecutive knockout to raise his overall mark to 24-4 with twenty-three knockouts. Willis of Houston is now 12-14-1.

The co-feature saw Legendary Blue Horizon favorite, Gee Cullmer raise his record to 16-1 as he scored a close split decision over Clarence “Sonny Bono” Taylor in a six round middleweight bout.

Taylor took some of the early frames but Cullmer got things going and made it a dog fight to pound out the decision by scores of 59-55 & 58-56 while Taylor took a third card by a 59-55 tally.

In one of the most-anticipated pro debuts in a while, Nazareth’s Achmad Tuba showed quick hands and advanced defensive skills to score a four round shutout unanimous decision over Vincent Batteast in a four round Jr. Middleweight fight.

Tuba was the subject of Television & Newspaper coverage as the muslim trains with a team of Jewish fighters in Tel Aviv. Scores were 40-36 on all cards.

For the second straight month, Taneal Goyco and Davit Davitshvilli put on a show for the fans at The Legendary Blue Horizon as they fought a back and forth brawl that once again had Goyco come out in top by scoring a unanimous decision in a four round cruiserweight affair.

FRESNO, Calif. (May 15, 2009) – Previously unbeaten hometown favorite Billy Evangelista lost by disputed, controversial second-round disqualification to Mike Aina Friday in the main event of the inaugural Strikeforce Challengers telecast on SHOWTIME.

At the finish, neither fighter was satisfied with the outcome at the Save Mart Center.

Evangelista (9-1), of Fresno, was disqualified for “intentionally” kneeing Aina (12-6-1), of Hilo, Hawaii, in the head while the Hawaiian fighter was down. The rule is a fighter can knee a downed opponent to the body, but not the head.

“I feel bad at what happened, but I am definitely planning to protest,’’ Evangelista said. “Nothing I did was on purpose. I thought I had timed the knee perfectly and that he was on his feet when it was delivered.’’

Said Aina: “No one likes a fight to finish this way. I don’t look at it as a win for me, and he should not look at it as a loss for him. It should have been a no contest.’’

The five-fight telecast aired on SHOWTIME at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the west coast).

In other SHOWTIME fights: Sarah Kaufman (9-0) of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, remained unbeaten with a hard-fought unanimous decision over determined Miesha Tate (6-2) of Olympia, Wash., in a women’s match at 135 pounds; Lavar Johnson (12-3) of Fresno scored an 18-second, first-round knockout over Carl Seumanutafa (4-3), a Samoan based in San Francisco, in a heavyweight fight; San Antonio’s Aaron Rosa (12-2) registered a 4:29 first-round TKO (choke) over Anthony Ruiz (21-13) of Coarsegold, Calif., takes on in a light heavyweight bout and Bao Quach (16-9-1) of Huntington Beach, Calif., won a unanimous decision over Tito Jones (6-3) of Sacramento, Calif., in a featherweight scrap.

In an eagerly anticipated women’s bout, Kaufman outlasted Tate in a non-stop, see-saw battle. It was the first time Kaufman was taken the distance, but she was the stronger fighter at the finish and won by the scores of 29-28 on all three scorecards.

A relentless puncher with good stamina, Kaufman bloodied Tate’s nose, but was taken to the mat twice, the first times she has ever been down.

“I give Miesha credit but I am very happy with my performance,’’ Kaufman said. “I wish I could have done more in the second round, but three rounds go by so fast. I wish they’d let us fight five-minute rounds like the guys.

Tate took down Kaufman in the closing seconds of the first round and in the first 35 seconds of the second. She kept Kaufman on her back for much of the second but couldn’t sustain her momentum in the third.’’

Johnson, a standout football player as an outside linebacker ay Madera (Calif.) High, caught an off balance Seumanutafa with a quick, brutal right uppercut that knocked the Samoan unconscious and sent him face down to the canvas. Seumanutafa tried to shoot with his head down but was nailed flush.

“This is exactly what I had practiced. I had watched tapes of Carl and knew he might try that kind of thing.

“This was an important win for my. I had my two young sons with me. No way was I going to let them see their Dad get beat up. No way they’d listen to me after that.’’

Rosa rallied after getting caught early. “He got me, but then I rocked him good with a right hand off the cage,’’ Rosa said. “I feel good. This was a big win and I am grateful for Strikeforce giving me this opportunity. He was a slick guy but he didn’t do anything that I wasn’t prepared for. did, slammed Ruiz, and was in control until the referee stopped the bout.

The victory was the second in a row for Rosa, who won the first 10 fights of his career.

In the telecast’s opening bout, Quach survived two knockdowns in the final round to win by the scores of 29-28 on the three judges scorecards. Winning for the 10th time in 11 starts, Quach appeared hurt after going down a second time but Jones didn’t follow up.

“I stuck to my game plan, which was to stick (kick) and move, and I did,’’ Quach said. “I know I won the first two rounds and he definitely got me in the third. I was dazed but he didn’t capitalize. But until the third round, he didn’t do anything. There was no doubt in my mind that I won the fight.’’

Non-televised results: Ben “The Teacher” Holscher (2-0) of Fresno submitted (rear naked choke) Cody Cantebury (1-4-1) of Sacramento at 2:47 of the first round (160 pounds); Thomas Diagne (1-0) of San Jose, Calif., won a decision over Kaleo Kwan (7-10) of Kailua, Hawaii (lightweights); Fabricio “Morango” Camoes (10-4) of Brazil submitted (rear naked choke) Torrance Taylor (7-6-1) of Cleveland, Ohio at 3:31 of the first round (155 pounds) and Spencer Herns (1-0) of San Jose won a majority three-round decision over Chad Sutton (2-2) of Fresno in a bout at 185 pounds.

SHOWTIME will replay Friday’s telecast on Thursday, May 21 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on SHOWTIME TOO. It will be available ON DEMAND beginning Monday, May 18.
