PHILADELPHIA (September 10, 2008)—On Wednesday most of the participants for this Friday night’s big card at The Legendary Blue Horizon were on hand to converse about the outstanding show that will be highlighted by three evenly matched eight-round bout that will surely provide fireworks and excitement for the fans in attendance and those who will be able to view the card on www.gofightlive.tv on a tape delayed basis.
In the main event, Steve Upsher Chambers will take on Kevin Carmody in a Jr. Welterweight fight. Gee Cullmer and Jameel Wilson will square off in super middleweight tilt. A potentially explosive cruiserweight fight between undefeated Ran Nakash of Israel taking on Larry Robinson of Philadelphia in a bout that most pundits believe will end in a knockout.
There will be three exciting undercard bouts featuring Derrick Bivins and Darryl Jones making their pro debut in separate bouts.

US Olympic Alternate Danny O’Connor Turns Pro September 17 in Manchester, NH

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. (September 10, 2008) – 2008 U.S. Olympic first alternate Danny O’Connor makes his professional boxing debut September 17 against Jose Guerrido in a four-round bout on “The Maul In Manchester” — the seventh annual Fight To Educate – at the Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester, New Hampshire.
The 23-year-old O’Connor, fighting out of Framingham (MA), won this year’s US Future Stars National Championship, in which he was named Most Outstanding Boxer, as well as the National Golden Gloves Tournament, both in the 141-pound light welterweight division. Danny’s most notable victory as an amateur was a dominating victory, 23-3, against eventual 2008 Olympic Gold medalist Felix Diaz, of the Dominican Republic, on May 29 in a USA-Dominican Republic dual meet in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
“I’ve never been so ready in my life,” O’Connor said about his pro debut. “I feel like a caged lion. I can’t wait. It’s something I’ve dreamed about and I’m excited it’s happening so close to home. I wish I had boxed in the Olympics and medaled, but I can always say a month before the start of the Olympics I beat the gold medalist.”
O’Connor was a Massachusetts high school wrestling champion when he was a sophomore. The stylish southpaw that reminds some of a cross between a young Paul Spadafora and Winky Wright, offensively and defensively, respectively, had been training less than six months when he participated in his first national tournament in 2006.
A lifelong resident of Framingham (MA), Danny has gone from a 4-time New England Golden Gloves champion, winning the novice and open titles in his first time around the circuit, to recently being profiled in Sports Illustrated (Faces In The Crowd).
O’Connor, who trains at the 401 Gym in Rhode Island, is co-managed by Rob Valle and Dave Keefe, who also is head trainer. Danny recently signed a promotional contract with Warriors Boxing. “I made a lot of sacrifices being an Olympic alternate, being away from my family for so long,” O’Connor spoke about his signing, “but it paid off and I signed a great deal with Warriors Boxing.
Dave (Keefe) made the arrangements and I met Leon Margules (Executive Director of Seminole Warriors Boxing). I got a real good feeling right away about Warriors because Leon runs a great, well organized company. He was very genuine. I felt signing with Warriors was in the best interest of my career. I really like him. Everybody’s happy with the deal.”
O’Connor debuts on a 5-fight pro card showcasing unbeaten prospects Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin (19-0, 14 KOs) and Ronald “The Chosen One” Hearns (19-0, 15 KOs) separate bouts. Special guests will include boxing stars Tommy “Hit Man” Hearns, the 6-time world champion who’ll be supporting his son, Ronald, International Boxing Hall of Fame inductee Roberto “Hands of Stone” Duran, and legendary trainer Angelo Dundee.

The James Shuler Memorial Gym In West Philadelphia is a real working gym where those just starting out train alongside current champions of all weights and classes. The ring always seems to have some action going on, but the fighters and trainers just keep on working, honing their skills. Sometimes a fighter or trainer may take a minute or two off to catch a glimpse at the two combatants sparring, but that‘s about all.
Not so earlier this week. Everyone, but everyone stopped what they were doing and watched as two fighters well known as gym regulars squared up to each other. It could so easily have been because climbing on to the ring apron to give instruction from one corner was the legendary trainer Nazim Richardson and the other Marshall Kauffman, but no. it’s not unusual to see them instructing their many famous charges.
It was something far rarer. None other than the current IBF cruiserweight champion of the world, Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham had climbed in to the ring, for a public sparring session.
On the spur of the moment the ever likable champion had decided to give his good friend, Julio Cesar Matthews (4-0), a serious workout to assist with Matthew’s preparation for his upcoming fight against the more experienced Chris Stallworth (9-1) from Pittsburgh, this coming Saturday at the ‘Night Of The Rising Stars’ event in Reading, Pennsylvania.
Matthew’s, and those lucky enough to be in the gym at the time, were treated to a master class in the art of pugilism tutured by the grand master himself.
At the end of the session all those in attendance applauded the pair and normal service resumed as everyone went straight back to their training.
Julio Cesar Matthews vs Chris Stalworth will be at the King’s Promotions ‘Night Of The Rising Stars’ event at the Riveredge Hotel and Restaurant Complex. Route 183 North, Reading PA on Saturday September 13th and Steve Cunningham will be there to cheer his friend on.
This event will be headlined by an eight round heavyweight bout featuring Travis ‘GW Hope” Kauffman (12-0, 9 KOs) against Josh “Griz” Gutcher (18-9) of Iowa.
The evening’s eight round co-feature will pit Reading’s Keenan Collins (12-4-1) against Joshua Onyango (14-15-1) of New Jersey.
In addittion to Julio Cesar Matthews vs Chris Stalworth the undercard features featherweight Lucian Gonzalez (6-4-1) who will face an opponent yet to be determined in a six rounder and welterweight debutee Jose Martinez will take on Esteban Rodriquez (2-1). Also making his pro debut will be Philadelphia heavyweight Joey Dawejko, who has won five national tournaments as an amateur.
Doors open at 6:45pm; fights start at 7:30pm. The Riveredge is located on Route 183 North, just south of the Reading Airport. Tickets are priced at $60.00 ringside and $30.00 general admission. Team Ruiz counters Sauerland’s attack

LAS VEGAS (September 10, 2008) – Team Ruiz blasted Wilfried Sauerland and his promotional company about derogatory remarks made against two-time World Boxing Association heavyweight champion John “The Quietman” Ruiz (43-8-1, 29 KOs), after the latter responded to a press release in which Team Ruiz demanded a full videotape of Valuev-Ruiz II to further review for evidence of alleged corrupt practices in their August 30th fight in Berlin.
Team Ruiz’ points of contention included Judge Takeshi Shimakawa improperly keeping a running score during the fight; Ruiz not being credited with a legitimate knockdown when he floored Valuev in the second round; Judge Antonio Requena scoring two rounds even despite WBA instructions that there should be no even rounds scored in championship bouts; most importantly, throughout the fight Valuev’s cornermen received judges’ scoring results as the rounds went on.
“Team Ruiz is not as concerned with media quotes in Sauerland’s hometown newspaper,” Ruiz advisor/attorney Tony Cardinale emphasized, “as they are about quotes from international publications from several years ago like Tim Graham’s Dec. 2, 1999 column regarding the federal criminal charges against the IBF’s Bob Lee, ‘How to get ranked in boxing’ on espn.com: “Two other alleged scenarios involved George Foreman and Axel Schultz. According to the documents, Foreman’s people paid (past IBF president Robert) Lee $100,000 for an exemption to defend his title against the unranked Schulz. Big George got more than he bargained for and sweated out a majority decision. Then Schulz’s management allegedly paid Lee $100,000 to order a rematch. He did, but it never came off.” (Team Ruiz note: Sauerland was Schultz’ management team.) We had a good laugh reading what Team Sauerland said, but we are more concerned about what went on in this fight. We want to review the full, unedited Valuev-Ruiz II videotape to strengthen our position outlined in the original release about the issues.”
PunchStat results of Valuev-Ruiz II revealed that Ruiz connected with nearly twice as many power punches as Valuev, 98-52, and that the 7’ 0”, 318-pound Valuev threw 99 jabs compared to Ruiz’ 49. Valuev also instigated 79 “clear” clinches to Ruiz’ 29.
“This wasn’t the amateurs where jabs count as much as power punches,” Cardinale noted. “John had Valuev running around the ring, despite the tremendous difference in their sizes (Ruiz stands 6’ 2” and weighed 239 pounds), when Valuev wasn’t throwing that freakishly long, light hitting jab of his to hold-off John, he was holding and pushing John down.”
Upon review of the full videotape of the fight for review, Team Ruiz indicated that it planned to petition the WBA to rule the bout a no-contest and Valuev be stripped of the WBA title for a blatant violation of WBA rules. Team Ruiz will also seek sanctions against any officials involved in permitting these violations to happen.

MCC Middleweight Champ to Visit Fans at MCC 16 Prior to UFC Debut

Joe “The Doctor” Vedepo snatched the middleweight crown from Brian Green during MCC 14 in one of the most brutal fights in MCC history. A few short weeks later, Vedepo signed a multi-fight contract in the largest promotion in mixed martial arts, the UFC. “The Doctor” joins the list of MCC standouts who went on to compete in the UFC, including former Lightweight Champion Jeremy “Lil Heathen” Stephens, as well as John “Hurricane” Halverson.

The fight for the WBO interim title at supermiddle between Karoly Balzsay and Denis Inkin set for Universum´s big show in Hamburg September 27 is postponed after Balzsay was cut in sparring. The cut didn´t require stitches but is still bad enough to force a postponement of the fight.
The WBA have called for purse bids for the all German mega fight at middleweight between WBA ruler Felix Sturm, promoted by Universum, and mandatory challenger Sebastian Sylvester, promoted by Sauerland Event. The deadline is September 15. The day after the IBF stage purse bids for Wladimir Klitscko vs Alexander Povetkin, should Sauerland Event win they might look to promote the fight in Moscow.
K 2 East promotes a show named “Tiger Boxing” September 27 in Kiev, Ukraine. IBF Youth middleweight champ Maksim Bursak headlines and face Esteban Waldemar Ponce from Argentina.
Superheavyweight Vyacheslav Glazkov, who won a bronze medal in the Bejing Olympics, might turn pro with K 2 East Promotions
WBO Latin cruiser champ Ali Ismailov defends the title October 4 in Viborg, Russia. At middle prospect Guenady Martirosyan takes on Hungarian Attila Kovacs, the former IBO titlist. Jr light Sherzod Nazarov is in against Portugese Joao Bento.

VETERAN MMA FIGHTER EVAN TANNER DISCOVERED DEAD AT AGE 37

Evan Tanner, who became an inspirational illustration of how it really is possible to overcome addiction, was recently found dead in the Palo Verde mountain area while on a camping trip there. A cause of death is yet to be reported, but the most chilling part of this story is not just that Tanner died so young. It seems that before his departure to the mountainous desert terrain Tanner actually made public comments to downplay the dangerousness of his trip that now appear to have jinxed him in the worst way. MMA fans everywhere will mourn the loss of this true warrior, and his story of overcoming adversity will also surely inspire anyone who learns of it, whether they be fans of the sport or not. Our condolences go out to Tanner’s family, and we hope the example of his true courage, tenacity, and refusal to let his demons devour him will outlive him and encourage others to believe in the possibility of ultimate redemption.
