MICHAEL TORRES TO TAKE ON MARK ALEXANDER IN HEADLINING BOUT AT ROBERT TREAT HOTEL ON SEPTEMBER 14TH IN NEWARK

NEWARK, NEW JERSEY (August 17, 2011)—On Wednesday night September 14^th, Gulfstream Boxing Promotions and Gabe LaConte will present the second installment of the Wednesday Night Fights Series at the Robert Treat Hotel in downtown Newark.

In the main event, Michael Torres of Jersey City, New Jersey will take on Mark Alexander in an eight round Jr. Welterweight bout.

Torres has a record of 13-2 and will be looking to get back in the win column after suffering his first two pro defeats.

He won his first thirteen bouts in a row which included wins over Keenan Collins (4-0); Eli Addison (8-1); Charles Wade (4-1); and Gilbert Vera (9-1-1).

He is coming off a six round defeat to John Williams (6-1-1) on October 29^th, 2010.

Alexander will be coming all the way from London, England and will be sporting a record of 10-5 with one knockout.

He has been in the ring with former world champion Michael Brodie and holds a win over undefeated Michael Devine (3-0).

He is coming off a knockout defeat to Ryan Barrett on September 11, 2010 in London.

A full undercard has been assembled that will feature some terrific veteran’s and top prospects.

Grizzled veteran Carlos Vinan will see action in an six round Lightweight bout.

Vinan of Newark, NJ via Ecuador will a record of 10-9-4 into the ring but he has beaten some top prospects such as Orlando Gonzalez (4-0-1); former Olympic alternate Eric Hunter (5-0); Andrew Cancio (8-0-2); Victor Vasquez (11-3); Anthiny Mazzache (18-5-3).

Vinan has drew with Lonnie Smith (4-1-1); Carlos Madrid (4-1-1); Eloy Perez (8-0-1) and Anthony Flores (8-0-1)

Cruiserweight Max Alexander will take part in a six round bout.

Alexander of Camden, New Jersey has a record of 14-5-2 with two knockouts.

Alexander was fixture in the PA/NJ circuit before taking his act on the road and facing top competition around the world.

Alexander won his first fourteen bouts with one draw.

Before joining the Contender Season 3 where he dropped bouts to former world title challenger Sam Soliman and Brian Vera.

Has last three bouts have been contested in Russia, Germany and New Zealand with his most recent bout taking place on October 3, 2009 when he dropped a six round unanimous decision to Moyoyo Mensah.

CORAL SPRINGS (Aug. 17, 2011) – On Saturday, August 20, Grapplers Quest is hosting the 2011 Southeast Grappling and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Open Championships at Coral Springs Gymnasium located at 2501 Coral Springs Drive in Coral Springs, Florida.

‘Bazooka’ Joe Linenfelser ready to explode on final 2011 ESPN FNF card

CHICAGO (Aug. 17, 2011) – Whether or not his swing bout airs on this week’s ESPN Friday Night Fights (FNF) card, welterweight prospect “Bazooka” Joe Linenfelser (9-1-1, 6 KOs), a 23-year-old boxer from Rockford, Illinois, plans to steal the show.

 

The final ESPN FNF card of the year, live from Hammond, Indiana, showcases 2008 U.S. Olympian Demetrius Andrade vs. The Contenders’ champion Grady Brewer in the main event and former world champion David Diaz vs. Hank Lundy.  Never-the-less, Linenfelser plans to rock the Horseshoe Casino.

 

“It’s going to be great, whether or not I actually get to fight on ESPN,” Linenfelser said.  “I know there are four other good fighters on the card with great records and reputations, but people who watch my fight are going to go away asking when I’ll be fighting again.”

 

In a six-round fight, Linenfelser will face his most difficult test to date, tough veteran Ruben “Modern Day Warrior” Galvan (27-17-4, 10 KOs), who has only been stopped four times. Galvan has been in the ring against world champions such as Zab Judah, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., Paul Spadafora, as well as world title challenger Dmitriy Salita.

 

“Beating Galvan will give me more credibility and hopefully get me ranked by one of the regional organizations,” Linenfelser added.  “It’ll help put me on the map and get me a shot at Henry Coyle in a few months. For now, though, I’m fully focused on Galvan. He is a veteran who has fought a lot of good guys.  I really don’t know too much about him, but I’m a young, hungry pup and I know that I bring more to the table than him.”

 

When he made his pro debut October 8, 2005, stopping 181-fight veteran Donnie Penelton in the opening round of their fight in Iowa, 17-year-old Joe was the youngest professional boxer in the United States.

 

In October of 2008, Linenfelser registered his signature victory versus former NABA & NBA champion “Fearless” Fernando Hernandez, who Joe had previously defeated in a kickboxing fight. Linenfelser put Hernandez to sleep in the fifth round and then into retirement right after their fight in Auburn Hills, Michigan. Next up for “Bazooka Joe” was an eight-round throw-down with 1996 Cuban Olympian Ivan Leden (12-8-1), in Milwaukee, that Linenfelser won by decision.

 

Linenfelser was inactive for 14 ½ months (2010-2011) due to an injury suffered in the ring, until his triumphant ring return this past April against Jeremy Marts in Chicago. Linenfelser dropped Marts once in the fifth and twice from body shots in the final round en route to a win by unanimous, six-round decision.

 

“I took a year off and during that time I concentrated more on body shots,” ‘Bazooka Joe” explained. “I’d always been ‘Bazooka Joe,’ throwing bombs and knocking guys out. But I found out that, the better the opponent, the harder it is to knock ‘em out with just head shots. Body shots tear-down an opponent and then you go upstairs to finish.”

 

Linenfelser has fought almost exclusively as a junior middleweight – his only loss was in a fight in which he weighed 171 ¾ pounds – but he’s dropped down to welterweight for this fight and plans to continue fighting at 147.

 

“I had no problems making 147,” he concluded.  “There was a time that I had some personal problems, but I started praying a lot and everything just seemed to fall into place for me. My speed and stamina has improved.  I’m as strong as ever and I’ve been running 12 miles a day.  When I fought at 154, I’d balloon-up as high as 187 between fights. Now, I eat and drink right and my weight doesn’t go way up.

 

“My father (manager Jeff) has been telling me for a long time that I should be fighting at 147.  I haven’t felt this good since I was 14.  I’m excited to fight at this weight.  I’m on a nutritious diet and take vitamins. I used to be on a ‘wrestling diet’ to make weight because I lost weight the wrong way.  I’m living healthy and feeling real strong.”

August 27 heavyweight showdown in Germany

 

SCOTTSDALE, Arizona (August 17, 2011) – Former World Boxing Organization (“WBO”) Heavyweight Champion Sergei “The White Wolf” Liakhovich is primed and set to challenge defending champion Robert “The Nordic Nightmare” Helenius for the WBO and World Boxing Association (“WBA”) Inter-Continental titles, next Saturday (Aug. 27) in a 12-round bout airing live in the United States from Efurt, Germany on the EPIX cable network.

 

Liakhovich (25-3, 16 KOs), who lives in Arizona, departs this Saturday for Germany, where Helenius resides. An impressive victory against Helenius (15-0, 10 KOs) — WBO #2, IBF #3, WBA #9, IBF #13 and No. 9 by The Ring –will set the stage for a major showdown with either of the current world title holders, Vitali or Wladimir Klitschko.

 

“I am ready and looking forward to August 27^th,” Liakhovich said in between recent training sessions. “Helenius is a good fighter. He does certain things in the ring very well, but my job is to take that away from him. I will beat him at what he does badly and will take away what he does well. Fans are going to see a high- quality level of boxing and fighting from me.”

 

Liakhovich has a decisive experience advantage against Helenius, in terms of total professional fights (28 to 15) and rounds (161-70), as well as a huge edge in strength of opponents fought. Sergei is also being trained once again by Kenny Weldon, who worked with Liakhovich in the past, including his WBO title-winning performance against Lamon Brewster.

 

“My experience is a huge advantage in this fight,” Liakhovich noted. “I have been to war and back several times in my boxing career. There is no substitute for experience. Kenny and I are on the same page.”

 

Liakhovich’s Boston-based advisor and veteran boxing lawyer, Anthony Cardinale, revealed that Sergei passed on a much more lucrative offer to challenge Helenius.

“We were offered three times more money than this purse to fight one of the Klitschko brothers before Christmas,” Cardinale explained. “Sergei and I believe that there will be considerable more demand (and therefore much more money) for a Klitschko title fight following his defeat of Helenius. It was Sergei’s choice, and one I admire and respect

 

“Sergei is determined to win and more than ready to fight. Helenius is going to quickly find out that he is in the ring with someone he has not seen before — an opponent as relentless, confident and skilled as Sergei.”

 

“This is Sergei’s first fight since signing with Main Events,” his promoter Kathy Duva said. “From our first conversation he has clearly expressed his desire to make a real statement in the heavyweight division by fighting absolutely anyone. He is taking on a big challenge in Helenius, but we expect that by next Saturday (Aug. 27) everyone will know that Liakhovich is back and ready to regain his world heavyweight title.”

Undefeated Todd Wilson and Former World Champ Eric Aiken to Battle on Sept 10 Jimmy Lange Boxing Card

FAIRFAX, VA – In what should be his toughest fight to date, undefeated welterweight Todd “White Lightning” Wilson (10-0, 3 KOs) will face former world champion Eric “Mighty Mouse” Aiken (16-7-1, 12 KOs) in a six-round contest on the September 10 Jimmy Lange Boxing card at the Patriot Center.

 

The Fairfax-based Wilson, a former national collegiate boxing champion and two-time All-American at Virginia Military Institute, has won his first 10 pro bouts, including the last three at the Patriot Center.  A business development specialist at Booz Allen Hamilton who trains at Annandale Boys & Girls Club (ABGC), Wilson defeated another tough veteran, Dean “Pitbull” White, in his last fight held on March 12, 2011 in Fairfax.

 

Based out of Washington, DC, Aiken, who also works as a personal trainer, is set to make his return to the ring after a three-year absence.  Aiken’s crowning moment as pro came when he captured the International Boxing Federation’s (IBF) featherweight world title by defeating heavily-favored and previously undefeated Valdemir Pereira on May 13, 2006.  Possessing strong punching power in both hands with good speed, he lost to Monty Meza Clay in his last bout held on February 1, 2008.

 

In the evening’s 10-round Main Event, hometown fan favorite and former star of the boxing reality TV show The Contender,  Jimmy Lange,(Great Falls, VA) will fight for a world title, taking on Raul “El Toro” Munoz (Topeka, KS) for the World Boxing Union (WBU) 154-lb Championship. The card will also feature Lange’s Contender teammate Jonathan Reid, another Contender participant (Season 2)Michael Stewart, as well as Zain Shah (Chantilly), Lawrence Jones (Reston) and Scott Sigmon (Lynchburg).
