Maurice Harris back in heavyweight picture

NEW YORK (July 20, 2011) – USBA heavyweight champion Maurice “Sugar Moe” Harris’ often tumultuous boxing career is back in a good place, after he redeemed himself last Saturday in Atlantic City, when he stopped Derric“The Shaolin Fist” Rossy in the 12^thround at Resorts Casino Hotel.

Harris (25-15-2, 11 KOs) was coming off of a disappointing loss by third round to Tony “The Tiger” Thompson (36-2, 24 KOs) in May, shown live on ESPN Friday Night Fights in their IBF Box-Off.

 

Rossy (25-5, 14 KOs), rated No. 15 by the IBF, served as a litmus test for Harris, a 35-year-old whose major claim to fame is winning the 2002 Thunderbox Heavyweight Tournament, defeating Thompson in the $100,000 finale, as well as defeating world champion Sergei Liakhovich. The New Jersey fighter found himself at the crossroads once again, facing possible retirement if he lost to Rossy, the former Boston College football standout who had previously defeated WBO champion and 1988 Olympic gold-medal winner Ray Mercer (DEC12) and world title challenger Carl David Drummond (DEC10).

 

“I never looked at the fight like that,” Harris said, “only as another challenge, another fight. I don’t focus on something like that (in a career-ending fight) because I always need to focus on my opponent and our fight. I did show resiliency when I needed to win. It was a good win, one of my top five, but I was only about 70-percent of what I can really be. I hadn’t been 12 rounds since last August. I was still a little rusty. You can do that (12 rounds) in the gym but it’s not the same as in a fight. I did feel good going into the fight and afterwards.”

 

Harris dropped Rossy in the sixth, led by two rounds going into the 12^th, and finished the show in impressive style. The veteran had worn-down Rossy and eventually trapped his tiring opponent on the ropes in the 12^th, decking him again with a three-punch combination, an overhand right to the chin serving as an exclamation point. Rossy got to his feet but Harris moved in to finish him, backing Derec onto the ropes again, and unloading a four-punch combination against his defenseless opponent. Referee Earl Morton halted the action at 1:35 of the final round.

 

“This fight proved that Maurice’s last one was a fluke.” Harris’ promoter Mario Yagobi (Boxing 360) commented. “He couldn’t respond right after getting hit with so many illegal hits behind the head. I said that before this fight and still believed in Maurice. He was the stronger, bigger guy who showed a lot more skills than his opponent. Rossy came to win. He was in great shape, at 225 pounds, and had a six-pack stomach. Maurice showed his experience, dropping him the sixth, and finishing with a 12^th round knockout. Rossy was banged up; his face had a lot of bruises and welts. From the eighth or ninth round, he looked like a beaten fighter.”

 

“The last two rounds were my strongest,” Harris noted. “I caught my second wind. I knew one good assault would close the deal. I hadn’t had a knockout in a long time (2002 vs. Liahkovich). I thought I had him out in the sixth, but he stayed right in there until the last round. I hit him with some good combinations. He fell and got up, but I knew he was finished.

 

“The Thompson fight is still in the back of my head. We’ve both won once and I’d like a third fight to settle things. I won’t get over it until we do. I wish him luck in his fights but, even if it’s sparring, I want to fight him again. He didn’t fight the best Maurice Harris but, then again, neither did Rossy.”

 

Because Harris, rated No. 9 by the IBF, fought an optional defense against Rossy, Maurice has a mandatory coming up against a challenger to be determined. Chazz Witherspoon is the No. 1 rated IBF challenger, followed in order by Steve Collins, Cedric Boswell, Antonio Tarver and Michael Grant.

The two massive super heavyweights fighting in the main event of the nationally and internationally televised world championship Kickboxing Empire card scheduled for Saturday, July 30, in the Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, sat down for interviews recently, and their personalities could not be in more stark contrast.   Alain “The Panther” Ngalani of Hong Kong and Dzevad “BH Machine” Poturak of Sarajevo, Bosnia, are a study in opposites.   Ngalani is the heavily muscled extrovert known as one of the fastest heavyweights on the planet. Poturak lets his fists do most of the talking. He is a relentless pressure fighter with extremely heavy hands.   A former high-profile bodyguard known for his famously brutal training routines, Ngalani is a flashy showman with a signature move called the “Panther High Kick.” A determined stalker in the ring, Poturak has made a career of being tougher than his opponents.   Poturak has shown exemplary sportsmanship to his opponents before and after every fight. Ngalani’s fightwith Ramazan Ramazanov became a YouTube hit when so many illegal blows were landed between the fighters it triggered a wild, in-ring brawl between the two fighters’ camps.   But one element of commonality they share is that they are two of the world’s best kickboxers and they will meet for the International Kickboxing Association super heavyweight championship, headlining an event that features the finest collection of international kickboxers to compete in Las Vegas in four years-a card that includes five current and former world champions.   Alain “The Panther” Ngalani You are proficient in a number of fighting disciplines. Which is your favorite and why? That’s a tough one, as i really enjoy practicing them all–from judo to karate, boxing to kickboxing–each discipline has made what I am today: a complete fighter.   Are we going to see your patented move “The Panther High Kick” on July 30? Definitely, I can’t wait to display that signature high kick on July 30. I’m even faster and more powerful now, as I’ve put on a few more kilograms of lean muscle this time around. I’m walking around at a solid 242 pounds. One might think that much weight would slow me down… think again!   What do you know about your opponent? I’ve seen my opponent fight and I respect him because I know what it takes to be a professional fighter. He is a worthy opponent and I like that. There’s nothing better to give a man a run for his money and a good show. He is a strong fighter, but I’m stronger.   You’re known for your brutal training regimen. Tell me how you prepared for this fight. Good diet and training are the ultimate key. I’ve been doing brutal circuit training, pads and bag-interval work and sparring all day long. How can one beat that?   How do you stay such a hard worker even into your 30s? What motivates you? I’m a fitness freak. I think if we eat, sleep and fart every day, we should train every day as well. It becomes like a therapy. Age becomes just a number. It is how you feel that matters and right now I feel better than when I was in my twenties. Go figure.   You’re 36 now. Happy Birthday. When your fighting days are over what will you do? Bodyguarding again? Coaching? Movies? I didn’t wait to retire from fighting. I’m already a coach/manager/director. I’m a business man investing in the fitness area and the property market.   Dzevad “BH Machine” Poturak How would you describe Ngalani as a fighter? He is strong fighter with good skills. Huge muscles.   How do you picture the fight against him unfolding? It is going to be a very good fight with a lot punches.   How do you feel heading into this fight? I am very happy to fight in Las Vegas and I am ready.   You’ve had a fantastic career already. How long do you plan to keep fighting? I think five more years. I’ve had a lot of fights with good names, like Daniel Ghita, Aleksey Ignashov, Melvin Manhoef, Chalid Arab, Alistair Overeem and others.   How did training go? Do you foresee any problems with stamina? The undercard has been announced for the Warriors Boxing blockbuster FIGHT NIGHTS at The Cosmopolitan III at The Chelsea Friday, July 29 and televised live on ESPN Friday Night Fights.

 

Several exciting matchups are scheduled in addition to the 12-round IBF Super Lightweight elimination bout between the Dominican Republic’s once-beaten IBF #3-rated Victor “Mermelada” Cayo (20-1, 18 KOs) and Washington DC’s IBF #4-ranked Lamont Peterson (24-1-1, 14 KOs) and the sensational 10-round light heavyweight showdown between Edison “Pantera” Miranda (34-5, 29 KOs) and Yordanis Despaigne (8-1, 4 KOs).

Game Plan: “No real game-plan because Jason comes swinging at you to see if he can knock you out. I’m just the type of guy; I see how I adjust to fight. The first round or two rounds I see how it goes and then I will work him out and do what I have to do to get the win.”

 

TV: “First, it being on Channel 5 (in UK) is a great thing for boxing and a great thing for me. It gets to be seen, hopefully, by a few million people for the Theophane name to get out there. And for it to be shown in America and Canada is a great thing because I loved being on ESPN a few times and I have Canadian and US friends and fans. It’s good because it’s like as worldwide event. I’m lovin’ that!”

 

Prediction: “I’m not a guy who stops guys, but don’t be shocked if there is a stoppage, and I’m going to win, be it points or stoppage. I’m going to win looking good.”

 

Next: “For me, I haven’t fought in America for a year, nearly exactly a year since I beat Delvin Rodriquez who just had a great draw with Pawel Wolak. I’d love – if I had my own way – I know the WBC champ is Timothy Bradley, my No. 1 target. I know he needs an opponent because he’s not fighting Khan, so I’d be willing to box with him when he finishes his dealings with his next promoter. Or, I’d be willing, eventually, to fight Berto or Ortiz. They are the long-term guys I want. If Bradley, Ortiz or Berto – win or lose – I want to fight the best. That’s what I want to do.”
