Big Fight Preview: Lee Selby-John Simpson British And Commonwealth Title Clash

New kids on the block, Francis and George Warren, have pulled out all the stops to ensure that their 14th December Queensberry promotions event, at York Hall in Bethnal Green, London – and broadcast live on BoxNation (Sky platform ch. 456) – is a fitting finale to a rather excellent year of British Boxing in the Capital.

Headlining the event Francis and George have Lee Selby defending his British and Commonwealth Featherweight titles for the first time against former champ John Simpson, who has held both straps at various times throughout his illustrious career.

Selby sensationally stopped Liverpool’s previously unbeaten Stephen Smith to lift the belts on only his eleventh pro outing back in September.

Selby, 24, was unfancied against the champion, especially as the fight was on Smith’s home turf, however the young Welshman dominated the centre of the ring throughout. Selby decisively secured victory on the two minute mark of the eighth round, after letting rip with a left-handed counter to send Smith crashing to the canvas and out cold.

The aforementioned Stephen Smith is a common denominator in this intriguing match-up, as it was the Liverpudlian that took, on separate occasions, both the British and Commonwealth straps from Simpson.

Simpson’s first encounter, in September 2010, with the younger brother of then British Super Middleweight Champion Paul Smith see him relinquish his Commonwealth belt after a storming twelve round war.

Three months later Simpson beat Martin Lindsay to lift the Lonsdale belt, which ultimately set up a return match with Smith in April this year. Yet another close all out war ensued, after which Simpson was again relieved of his coveted belt by the Liverpudlian

Even with Smith out of the equation this time you can bet that just as Simpson will be going all out to regain the British and Commonwealth straps, young Selby will be equally determined to hold on to the hard earned titles.

It’s fairly hard fight to call and has all the makings of a classic. My feelings are the early rounds will be a bit of a chess match, with Simpson keeping it long and working behind his excellent jab, whilst Selby will be looking to counter at every opportunity. As the fight progresses it is likely to liven right up, Simpson will be looking to box and Selby countering in fine style before letting off big bombs at every opportunity.

I’m not going to give any predictions on who is likely to take the belts home, but will say that the more I size this fight up the more I am convinced that it’s not going to go the distance.

Heading up the support the Warren boys have Steve O’Meara defending his recently won Southern Area Light Middleweight title, against upcoming TRAD TKO star ‘Sugar’ Nathan Weise

Back in September O’Meara sensationally knocked out defending champ, and local rival, Ryan Toms with a stunning pin point accurate left hook to the chin in the dying seconds of the first round.

Whilst not known as a concussive puncher O’Meara sure made a point with that stunning shot. As such Weise will need to ensure that his defense is up to scratch, something I’m sure trainer Mark Tibbs and manager Johnny Eames are already working on.

Weise is a stylish purist, right out of the ‘Sugar’ Ray Leonard mould, his sublime movement and fluid combinations make him a joy to watch and a real handful for any opponent.

In his last bout Weise had a six round war with former Champ Toms and if it wasn’t for a visit the canvas, in the third, he was on course for another fairly comfortable win, however due to having to take the count instead he had to settle 57-57 draw.

The clash of styles, between O’Meara and Weise, makes this a very interesting match up, one that is going to be an all action thriller. As with Selby-Simpson this is another tight one to call, saying that I have a sneeky feeling that the supremely talented Weise is likely to be just too slick and elusive for O’Meara.

In addition to O’Meara-Weise Francis and George Warren have put together an excellent undercard, featuring undefeated young prospects such as Slough teen sensation George Michael Carman, Cranham’s Lee Markham as well as a pair of Nathan Weise’s TRAD TKO gym mates, Canning Town’s Freddie Turner and Dagenham’s Ediz Hussein.

Cowboys Sign 7, Guerrero Happy with All Star’s Oliver & Parks, Talks to Takedown

TEMPE, Ariz. – Oklahoma State wrestlers Jordan Oliver and Jamal Parks each earned wins at the 46th Annual NWCA All-Star Classic Monday night.

Oliver, the top-ranked wrestler in the country at 133 pounds, earned an 8-7 decision over third-ranked B.J. Futrell of Illinois. It was his second win at the event, as he also defeated Andrew Hochstrasser of Boise State in 2010.

The defending national champion got off to a quick start as he took down Futrell and rode him for the remainder of the first period to earn a 1:57 riding time advantage. After choosing down to start period No. 2, Oliver escaped in just five seconds to take a 3-0 lead into the third period.

The third period saw much more scoring. Futrell started the period down and earned a quick escape to pick up his first point and make the score, 3-1, Oliver. The pair then traded takedowns to bring the score to 7-7 at the close of the third period. Thanks to Oliver’s riding time advantage, he picked up the extra point to win by a final score of 8-7.

Parks, ranked second at 149 pounds, was originally scheduled to face fifth-ranked Tyler Nauman of Pittsburgh, but instead squared off against Arizona State’s Joel Smith.

The senior All-American proved his rank as he made quick work of Smith to win a 17-4 major decision.

Parks jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the first period after recording three takedowns and a nearfall. He added another takedown in the second and two more in the third to make it 16-4 and earned the extra point with his riding time advantage.

The event, hosted by Arizona State this year, is an exhibition that annually features some of the top wrestlers from across the country. This marks the second-straight season Oklahoma State has claimed two winners at the event, with Oliver and Clayton Foster winning in 2010.

STILLWATER, Okla. – Oklahoma State wrestling has signed seven athletes to national letters of intent for the 2012-13 academic year, the program announced today.

Jordan Rogers, widely considered the best high school wrestler in the nation at 182 pounds, highlights the Cowboys’ recruiting class.

“The level of wrestling at Oklahoma State is just phenomenal,” Rogers said. “The opportunities they have there outside of the collegiate season with freestyle and international wrestling played a big role. That’s one of my favorite things to do is to wrestle freestyle and my goal is to go win the Olympics and World Championships. Coach Smith has already done it, so you can’t really go wrong with that.”

Five of OSU’s signees are from the state of Oklahoma, including brothers Kyle and Brian Crutchmer from Tulsa Union, Chase Ferman from Broken Arrow, Conner Cline from Blackwell and Landry Chappell from Guthrie.

Kyle Crutchmer was the 2011 6A state champion at 171 pounds, while Brian Crutchmer is a two-time 6A runner-up at 135 pounds.

“It’s definitely cool having my brother sign with the same school,” Kyle Crutchmer said. “We are pretty close and it will make things easier on us. I’m looking forward to hanging out with all the guys. I met them on an official visit and they all seemed really cool.”

His brother showed the same excitement to sign with the Cowboys.

“OSU is like a family with all the tradition they have there,” Brian Crutchmer said. “I like the coaches a lot and it just seemed like the right place. Me and my brother both decided we were going there. I like the way they do things.”

Case Garrison, who grandfather, Walt Garrison, played football for OSU and the Dallas Cowboys, is another big name on the list. He helped lead Graham High School in St. Paris, Ohio, to its 11th-straight state title last year and is considered one of the top high school wrestlers in the country at 135 pounds.

 

The remaining three signees are all Oklahoma high school state champions. 

 

Ferman claimed the 6A state championship at 135 pounds in 2011. He also went 34-2 and placed second in the 2011 Junior Greco-Roman Fargo Nationals at 135 pounds. He was a high school teammate of current Cowboy Zach Skates.

Chappell won the 2011 5A state championship at 215 pounds and holds a 7-1 all-time in the state tournament. He is also a football and baseball standout for Guthrie.

The final signee is Conner Cline of Blackwell. Cline won the Oklahoma 4A state title at 112 pounds to close his junior year in 2011.

Landry Chappell – Guthrie, Okla. (Guthrie High School)
Chappell won the 2011 5A state championship at 215 pounds and is 7-1 all-time in the state tournament. He played linebacker for Guthrie’s football team and had 178 tackles and five sacks in 2010. He also played baseball was named to the first team of the Oklahoman’s All-Big City team. The Guthrie mayor named Sept. 6 “Landry Chappell Day” in honor of his athletic and academic achievements.

Conner Cline – Blackwell, Okla. (Blackwell High School)
Cline won the Oklahoma 4A state title at 112 pounds to close his junior year in 2011.

Brian Crutchmer – Tulsa, Okla. (Union High School)
Crutchmer was the class 6A runner-up as a sophomore and junior at 135 pounds. He was also a Freestyle All-American in 2011.

Kyle Crutchmer – Tulsa, Okla. (Union High School)
Crutchmer won the class 6A state championship at 171 pounds in 2011. He was named a Freestyle All-American in 2011 and also plays safety for Union’s storied football program.

Chase Ferman – Broken Arrow, Okla. (Broken Arrow High School)
Ferman won the 6A state title in 2011 at 135 pound and was a high school teammate of current Cowboy Zach Skates. HSWrestling.net rates him as the No. 10 prospect at 135 pounds nationally. He went 34-2 in 2011 and placed second in the 2011 Junior Greco-Roman Fargo Nationals at 135 pounds. He also placed fourth in the 2010 Junior Greco-Roman Fargo Nationals at 130 pounds.

Case Garrison – St. Paris, Ohio (Graham High School)
Garrison helped lead St. Paris Graham to its 11th-straight state championship with a second-place finish at 135 pounds last year. He was named an honorable mention for the best 135-pounder by HSwrestling.net. Wrestling USA Magazine ranked him No. 7 among high school freshman and sophomores at 125 pounds as a freshman at Bishop Lynch in Texas. Garrison is the grandson of former Oklahoma State and Dallas Cowboy fullback Walt Garrison.

Jordan Rogers – Spokane, Wash. (Mead High School)
Rogers is wrestling at 182 pounds for Mead High School in Spokane, Wash. He is the preseason No. 1-ranked wrestler nationally in his weight class by several outlets including Intermatwrestle.com and WIN Magazine. In the 2010-11 season, he won the ASCIC National Championship in Greco and Freestyle at 171 pounds, earning a pin or tech fall against every opponent. The two-time winner at the WIAA State Championships was also a double champion at the FILA Cadet Nationals in Ohio, where he was named Outstanding Wrestler, and represented the United States at the FILA Cadet World Championships in Hungary in August. Rogers also received All-America honors at the Fargo ASICS Championships for his third-place finish in Greco and second-place finish in Freestyle.

WHAT:           Lamont and Anthony Peterson will spend this Thanksgiving helping those in need as they volunteer to serve and deliver Thanksgiving meals and baskets to some of the Washington DC’s less fortunate residents.

NEW YORK (Nov. 23, 2011) – Just one month out from the biggest fight of his life and his first in the United States, Anselmo “Chemito” Anselmo and his wife Rouss Laguna Moreno found out they are expecting twins.

There are indeed big things ahead for the 26-year-old fighter from Panama City, Panama, who will also be making his SHOWTIME and Golden Boy Promotions debuts, when Moreno will defend his World Boxing Association (WBA) Bantamweight Super Championship against Two-Division World Champion Vic “The Raging Bull’’ Darchinyan onSHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING on Saturday, Dec. 3, live on SHOWTIME^® (9 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast) at Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif.

In the main event, unbeaten rising star Abner Mares will defend his International Boxing Federation (IBF) and World Boxing Council (WBC) Silver Bantamweight Championship titles against the boxer he dethroned, former two-time IBF 118-pound champion Joseph King Kong Agbeko.

Moreno (31-1-1, 11 KO’s) met his wife after one of his fights in Panama.  Rouss’ father is the former lightweight world champion Ismael Laguna, who was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2001 and the World Boxing Hall of Fame in 1999.

Anselmo, whose personal website can be found at www.chemitomoreno.com, recently took time out from training camp to answer six questions about himself and his upcoming fight.

QUESTION: What do you expect to see from Vic Darchinyan, who many are calling your toughest opponent to date?

MORENO: “I feel like I’m a strong fighter just like he is.  I’m at the point in my career when I’m ready to fight the great ones like a Vic Darchinyan.  He has a good record and I have a lot of respect for him.  He will be quick and come forward and I’m aware of his power.”

QUESTION: Do you hope to someday have as much success in the United States as fellow Panamanian and New YorkYankees pitcher Mariano Riviera has had? 

MORENO: “Why not?  He worked hard to get where he is in America and now I’m beginning my journey to hopefully get there too.  My time is coming to be in the same place.  He’s viewed as a hero here, of course, but I have never met him since he has been living in the States.”

QUESTION: Do people recognize you on the streets of Panama?

MORENO: “Yes, people do when I’m out running and they want to stop me and take a picture with me.  They stop me in the supermarket and want to meet me.  There aren’t too many famous athletes from here and Roberto Duran was the most famous boxer.  I know I wouldn’t be recognized walking down the street in Los Angeles now, so that’s what I’m hoping will change after a few more fights in the States.” 

QUESTION: Do you think you will have more fans in Anaheim cheering for you than Darchinyan on Dec. 3?

MORENO: “That’s easy, Vic will; just because he’s fought there before and there are lots of Armenians that will be there cheering for him.  I do plan on bringing a lot of friends and family from Panama who will be loud and carrying the Panamanian flag.  I’ve won big fights in Germany and France, so I’m used to it, but for sure there will be a lot more cheering for Darchinyan.”

QUESTION: What do you plan on doing immediately after the fight?

MORENO: “We always take a week-long trip with the family.  We are thinking about the Bahamas this time, but my wife just found out last week she is pregnant with twins, so we’re not sure.  We’re very happy about the news and can’t wait.”

QUESTION: What about Disneyland?

MORENO: “No. My wife says she’s in no condition to walk that much or go on any rides.  Right now, I’m just concentrating on the fight. My wife wants to talk about our first trip to the United States and California and this and that, but I don’t want to hear anything about that.  I’m just so focused right now on the fight.”
