Manos: The Hands of Fate is recognized as one of the worst films of all time.   In fact, it was so bad when it was released in 1966, it transformed itself from a sci-fi horror flick into a comedy cult classic for the ages.   It’s baaaack.

 

Ryan “The Big Deal” Jimmo is recognized as one of the best fighters to come out of Canada.  In fact, he is so good, he’s transformed his 0 – 1 record into a 16 – 1 record in a dangerous light heavyweight division.  He’s baaaack.

What may be most exciting about the return of Manos and the return of Ryan Jimmo is they are doing it together.  That’s right, MFC fans.  Your light heavyweight champion is starring in the 2012 sequel of Manos.  The new film is called Manos: The Search for Valley Lodge, and Jimmo says this time the Manos franchise is coming out with a high-quality product, “Rupert Munch, the director, wanted to make a sequel that’s a great movie.  We have Gene Snisky and Marie Kanellis (both of WWE fame).  We have special effects people who worked on X-men, Spiderman, AVP, and Hellboy.  We have sound people who’ve worked with So You Think You Can Dance Malcolm in the Middle, Batman: Beyond, and American Idol. It’s going to be great.”

 

Soak it in for a minute.  This is a B-grade cult classic sci-fi horror flick sequel starring former WWE superstars and MFC light heavyweight champion, Ryan Jimmo.  The producer is shooting for high quality and bringing in the industry experts to make it happen.  Do you even need to read more?

 

Either way, there’s more to read because Jimmo gave a sneak peek into the plot; although, he’s keeping some secrets until the release date, “The basis of the original movie was a hidden portal that people drove through by mistake.  All these people go missing and end up in this place called Valley Lodge where there’s an evil and magical villain – The Master – and his harem of women.  In the sequel, we head back in there and kick some evil polygamist cult ass.”  Fans familiar with Jimmo, Snisky, and Kanellis can respect the type of evil ass-kicking bound to happen, and it’s hard to go wrong with a movie that involves a “harem of women,” especially when the director of photography, Jay Lee,  produced and directed Zombie Strippers.

 

The team will be filming in El Paso, Texas, and it sounds like Jimmo is working hard to get the role down.  It’s not all hard work, though.  Some parts of the character come naturally to him, “My character, he’s a bad ass dude.  He’s got a soft side, but he can kick ass, and he loves smoking cigars – just like I do.”  Smoking cigars and beating down evil doers?  It sounds like Jimmo’s acting and MMA careers are more similar than one might think.  In fact, the MFC superstar finds a number of parallels in preparing for fights and preparing for movies.

 

Jimmo said success comes the same way no matter what you do in life, “In anything you’re going to do, the general principles are all the same.  Whether it’s being an accountant, a chess player, or a fighter – any one of those pursuits requires the same thing.  It requires understanding the landscape of what you’re doing, understanding what skills you need, building those skills until you achieve excellence, and putting in a lot of hard work.”  That sounds like sound advice from a guy who just finished second in Alberta Provincials wrestling on top of a string of successes in theatre, breakdancing, and MMA.  He plans to continue building on all those successes, and those standing in his way better watch out.

 

Fighters may think now is a good time to get after Jimmo with his focus being spread between fighting and acting, but opponents thinking about going for his belt better not get too comfortable figuring he’ll go soft filming a movie, “I’ve got a jiu jitsu coach right there on site.”  The team working on this film are dedicated to MMA action and enlisted the aid of 5-time Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Champion Pedro Carvalho to choreograph the action sequences.  In addition, Jimmo will have access to full gym facilities during shooting, and, really, it’s only a couple weeks at any given time.

 

Having access to training resources during shooting means Jimmo can destroy bad guys on film and then continue the destruction in the MFC ring, and although there are no signs of stopping his MMA career, he keeps a keen mind to the future, “I want to get into acting.  After I’m a fighter, I want to be an actor.”  Considering he’s already starring in this much-anticipated remake, the champ is off to a great start, and he has great backing behind him thanks to companies like the Maximum Fighting Championship, Good4You, and X-Factor.

 

Manos: The Search for Valley Lodge is scheduled for release in 2013, and fans can check out the movie’s Facebook page or website (www.torgolives.com) right now.  Ryan Jimmo will be back in action soon as well; although, his next opponent has yet to be named.  After a very close fight with Sokoudjou and a soon-to-be superfight occurring between Wilson Gouveia and Dwayne Lewis, fans can only speculate on who it might be.  Regardless, The Big Deal will be making moves.  He’ll be shooting the film, building on his MMA training, helping his fight camp team mates, and maybe working on some surprises for MFC fans in the future.   His good character and excellence in everything he does make him a true champion of the people, and his positive attitude shone through again when asked if he would consider branching out to something way different, like testing his well-known breakdancing skills on So You Think You Can Dance.

Promoter Lenny Fresquez Speaks About ‘World Dominance: Holm vs. Mathis’ Dec. 2 at Route 66 Casino Hotel in Albuquerque

ALBUQUERQUE, NM (November 22, 2011) – “World Dominance” features the top two women’s boxers in the world, American favorite Holly “The Preacher’s Daughter” Holm (30-1-3, 9 KOs) and French knockout specialist Anne Sophie Mathis (25-1, 21 KOs), in arguably the No. female fight of all-time.   “World Dominance,” presented by Fresquez Productions, will be held Friday night, Dec. 2 at Route 66 Casino Hotel in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Holm-Mathis 10-round bout will be contested for the IBA Welterweight title and WBAN Championship Belt, as well as to determine the mythical No. 1 pound-for-pound world championship today in women’s boxing.   Veteran Lenny Fresquez has promoted Holm throughout her pro boxing and MMA career and he is also promoting “World Dominance.” Fresquez sat on the hot seat to answer questions about Holm, Mathis, female boxing and, of course, “World Dominance”   How significant is “World Dominance” for Holly as well as women’s boxing?   “This fight will confirm that Holly is unquestionably the No. 1 female fighter in the world. It is important for women’s boxing because they are the top two women in boxing today with 15 world titles between them. Holly has nine and she set a world record when she held all of the 147-pound belts except for the WBO.   “There are only three players today in women’s boxing – Holly, Sophie Ann and Cecilia Braekhus (18-0, 4 KOs – WBC, WBO & WBA welterweight champion). Mathis is the bigger puncher of the three and she has the best knockout ratio. But she has no fan-base in France or a promoter. She’s hard to promote because she isn’t very charismatic and unable to speak English.   Sauerland has done a great job promoting Braekhus, making people believe she’s a real world champion. She’s not in the same league as Holly, which is why we chose to fight Mathis first. “It’s a harder fight and we wanted to get that one out of the way first.”   What’s next for Holly after this fight?   “As Holly’s promoter, I’m always looking ahead to the next deal, but Holly’s not looking past Mathis. That’s my job and I think we have three possible options for Holly’s next fight. 1. Braekhus won’t come here but we’d love to fight her in March. 2. If this is a good fight, we can always have a rematch with Mathis. 3. Holly can have a big MMA fight.   “The only way I’d even think about Holly fighting Braekhus in Europe – she likes to fight in Denmark – would be under fair terms and conditions that would include a good purse and neutral judging. We’ve submitted a contract to Team Braekhus and we’re waiting for a response. We may go in another direction of we don’t receive a signed contract by the day of the Holm-Mathis weigh-in. We’ve never waited on, or will wait on anybody. Holly’s career has always been well planned every year. We will make plans after this fight for her in 2012.”   How does Holly rate all-time in women’s boxing?   “To me, she’s the best ever. The only other female fighters in her league, all-time, are Ann Wolfe, Regina Halmich and, maybe, Sumya Anani. Laila Ali fought on her father’s last name and she wasn’t nearly as good as these fighters. There’s nobody else.”   How frustrating is it not to be able to watch Holly fight on HBO or Showtime?   “She’s fought on ESPN and Telefutura, but HBO and Showtime have no interest in Holly or women’s boxing. Hopefully, the new head of HBO boxing will. Spanish boxing fans are interested in watching Holly fight because they’ve watched her grow-up here (New Mexico). People don’t understand the economics of promoting an ESPN show. First, it affects the gate, and ESPN doesn’t pay like it used to. Between rooms, meals and other costs for ESPN, it doesn’t pay for half of the main event purse. At the beginning of her career, Holly fought on ESPN for the exposure. Now, everybody knows Holly Holm, so we try and make the most money. It’s upsetting to see the top pound-for-pound men’s fighters like (Manny) Pacquiao and (Floyd) Mayweather make millions and millions of dollars, while the top pound-for-pound female fighters don’t even make a fraction of one-percent compared to men.”   Are you tired of criticism leveled at Holly for only fighting in Albuquerque?   “Yes. They paid us well to go to Detroit to fight Mary Jo Sanders in a rematch. It ended in a draw and Sanders retired after that fight. Holly’s also fought in Colorado and California. We’ll fight anybody, anywhere, anytime….as long as the money is right. That’s always been the problem, so why fight for less money?   “People here love watching her fight and she has a great fan-base. We’d love to kill that stigma by fighting elsewhere, but it all comes down to economics. There are probably only 25 male fighters in the United States who put as many people in seats as Holly does in Albuquerque.”   Holly “The Preacher’s Daughter” Holm   Holm is a nine-time world champion in three different divisions (light welterweight, welterweight and light middleweight) and the 29-year-old boxer has an amazing 20-0-1 (6 KOs) record in world title fights, in addition to sporting a 14-0-1 mark versus world champions. She has fought and beaten virtually all of the notable names of the past decade in women’s boxing, from 135 through 154-pound classes, including Christy Martin, Mary Jo Sanders, Mia St. John, Jane Couch, Duda Yankovich and Chevelle Hallback (twice). Holly is riding a 24-fight unbeaten streak, dating back to her only pro loss in 2004, when a serious cut under her eye prevented her from continuing to fight.   Ann Sophie Mathis   A six-time world titlist, Mathis is the reigning the WIBA, WIBF and WBF World Welterweight Champion. She has won 24 consecutive bouts, dating back 16 years to her only pro loss in her second pro fight. Gibson takes on Gomez for TPF strap

Lemoore, Calif. – Cody Gibson and Ulysses Gomez seemed to be headed in much different paths.

Gibson (5-1) was fresh off of a victory of Walel Watson (9-2) that thrust the Visalia, Calif. bantamweight into the Tachi Palace Fights title picture against Farkhad Sharipov (13-5), who had just defeated Tommy Vargas (8-2) on the same card.

In September, Gomez (8-2) bounced back with a bantamweight victory over Drew Bittner (4-2) and was looking to move back down to flyweight in December.

But the mixed martial arts gods had other ideas… Sharipov signed with Bellator, leaving an opening for the bantamweight title on Dec. 2 and the Las Vegas, Nev. grappler Gomez was quick to seize the opportunity.

“It’s a big honor that Tachi thinks enough about me to give me an opportunity to fight for the 135-pounhd title,” Gomez explained. “I’m looking to make the most out of the opportunities that are given to me.”

Gomez has openly said that his goal is still to get back to flyweight and fight for Tachi gold at that weight class as well, but couldn’t pass up a shot at a title at 135 pounds.

Gibson understands why.

“It feels good to be fighting for that title. Look at where the two guys that held that belt before are at now. They’ve both moved on to bigger things,” Gibson said. “I’m really excited to be fighting for that title.”

Former Tachi Palace Fights Bantamweight champions include the red-hot Ultimate Fighting Championship contender Michael McDonald (14-1) and UFC vet and WEC legend Cole Escovedo (17-9).

Although Gibson doesn’t carry the credentials of Gomez, he still is a worthy opponent. He snapped Watson’s 7-fight win streak with a dominating performance and then watched Watson get scooped up by the UFC one fight later.

“Cody is a really good wrestler and a game fighter. You can’t sleep on him,” said Gomez, who has competed against some of the world’s top flyweight fighters. “I think this should be an exciting fight.”

Tachi Palace Fights will stream live and free on Sherdog.com at 5:30 p.m. (PST).

The stream will be blacked out to fans within 100 mile radius of the Palace unless there is a sellout.

Gibson has been designated the underdog for this fight. It seems like a role the former Menlo College wrestler is comfortable with.

“Ulysses is great on the ground. I know he is a brown belt at Cobra Kai. I’ve seen all of his fights,” Gibson said. “I know what he is going to bring to the table. He isn’t bad on his feet… I mean he is no Jose Aldo, but he isn’t a fish out of water either.”

Gibson didn’t want to go into too much detail about his plans for the fight but did say that “At the end of the night, I think this is going to be a good fight”.

Meanwhile, Gomez thinks he might have the fight figured out.

“I kind of can see the fight in all different aspects. We will start on the feet, but I do see him trying to take me down and I see myself subbing him if he is able to do that,” Gomez said.

In the main event, TPF Flyweight champion Ian McCall (11-2) puts his belt and World No. 1 ranking on the line against Omaha, Neb.’s Josh Rave (18-8). San Clemente, Calif.’s McCall was originally scheduled to meet Will Campuzano, but an injury forced Campuzano out of action and Rave took the fight on short notice.

Isaac DeJesus returns to action after a 6-month suspension by the California State Athletic Commission and will face Riverside, Calif.’s Georgi Karakhanyan (16-3) in the co-main event. DeJesus (9-3) was stripped of his TPF Featherweight title in May after failing to make weight.

ROBERT ‘THE GHOST’ GUERRERO MAKES HIS CASE FOR MAYWEATHER

Guerrero (29-1-1, 18 KOs), who had partially tore the rotator cuff in his left shoulder ten days before a August 27th showdown with WBA jr welterweight champion Marcos Maidana, is fast approaching full fitness and will be ready to fight as early as March. To say he wants Mayweather on the May 5th Cinco de Mayo holiday is like saying some people think Mayweather’s shtick is tiresome. But Guerrero is too small, never fought at 140, much less 147. “It would be easy for me to fight as a welterweight without having to change my body,” Guerrero explained to FightNews. “My weight right now is 152 and I’m in great shape. Having to cut down to make weight’s no good for anybody. I’ve gotten stronger as I’ve moved up in weight.
