DUDDY TO FIGHT IN NYC ON IBRAGIMOV VS. KLITSCHKO UNDERCARD

Posted on | January 13, 2008 | No Comments

Duddy-Smichet Feb. 23 in NYC

NEW YORK (January 13, 2008) ? Unbeaten world middleweight title contender “Ireland’s” John Duddy has returned from his native Emerald Isle to his adopted Big Apple home in Queens to fight in New York City for the first time since last May, taking on Walid “Temperate de Sable” Smichet (17-3-1, 13 KOs) in the 10-round, off-TV co-feature February 23 on the heavyweight champion unification show, headlined by IBF champion Wladimir Klitschko against WBO title-holder Sultan Ibragimov, at Madison Square Garden.

Closing in on a world title fight in 2008, Duddy (23-0, 17 KOs) is rated No. 3 by the WBO and WBC, as well as No. 6 and No. 11 by the WBA and IBF, respectively, and No. 10 in The Ring magazine.

Duddy is coming off of three consecutive fights in Ireland, highlighted by his most notable victory to date in December, when he won a 10-round decision against former 2-time world title challenger Howard Eastman.

Smichet is a tough Tunisian fighting out of Montreal. His most notable win was a 10th round knockout of previously unbeaten (17-0) Matt O?Brien for the Canadian Middleweight Interim Title. Smichet also fought an eight-round draw against Donny McCrary of The Contender III fame.

“We’re coming down the stretch for the ultimate prize in boxing,” Duddy’s promoter (Irish Ropes president) Eddie McLoughlin said, “the middleweight championship of the world, maybe right after this fight. John hasn’t fought in New York City since May and, as great as it was for John to fight in Ireland, there’s something special about him fighting in New York City. He cut his teeth with New York City fans and they immediately warmed to him. They’re the real deal. I know John’s excited to be fighting back at Madison Square Garden. Duddy’s fight won’t be televised, so the only way to see him fight February 23rd is to buy a ticket and be there in Madison Square Garden.”

Undefeated New York City middleweights “Mean” Joe Greene (17-0) and Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin (15-0) are also on the Klitschko-Ibragimov card.

Tickets, priced at $1,000.00, $600.00, $300.00, $200.00 and $100.00, are on sale at the following locations: Manhattan: Demsey’?s, 36th W. 33rd (212.629.9899); Queens: Elaine’s Deli, 65 Pl. Mark Brown Wins As Havoc Erupts In Salem!

Posted on | January 13, 2008 | No Comments

By Matt Yanofsky

In front of a packed house at Salem County Community College, Salem’s very own Mark “Oak Tree” Brown improved to 11-1 (4 KO’s) in winning the battle of the Brown?s by getting a disqualification victory over Bernard Brown 5-3 (3 KO’s). Oak Tree was boxing Bernard slowly and landed a decent left hook which left the challenger from Baltimore, Maryland clinching. As both men landed a few shots out of the clinch, referee Allan Huggins called for a break. The Maryland resident then hit Oak Tree as Huggins attempted to move the two massive Heavyweights apart.

Bernard once again swung at Oak Tree hitting him, prompting Huggins to warn Bernard. Bernard ignored the warning and went for another dirty blow prompting Huggins to disqualify him. Oak Tree became frustrated with the dirty tactics and wrestled his opponent to the ground punching him multiple times before police entered the ring to break up the ruckus. When the disqualification was announced at 1:45 into the first round, the fans chanted “let them fight, let them fight.”

Light Heavyweight Reuel Williams improved to 6-1 (2 KOs) following a very lackluster unanimous decision victory over Zeferino Albino 3-4 (1 KO). Williams showed a few flashes of his excellent hand speed while landing some good clean shots. Unfortunately, the Delaware product spent too much time waiting around or avoiding the wild punches of Albino. This caused the crowd to boo frequently throughout the bout. Scores were 59-55 on all three cards.

Milo “Main Event” Miles 1-0 (1 KO) successfully won his pro debut with a first round KO over Jeremy Melvin 0-2. Miles landed a short left hook which dropped Melvin for the count at 1:45.

Desmond Bolden 1-0 (1 KO) earned a second round TKO over an aggressive Jesse Horton. During the first round, Bolden landed some good shots but was not able to drop Horton. Bolden’s punch increase went down during the second stanza where Horton threw just about everything except the kitchen sink at Bolden.

Horton’s aggression may have evened up the fight on the scorecards but surprisingly, we will never know. Surprisingly, Horton stayed on his stool after the second round, leaving the crowd confused as to what happened. It was later confirmed that he could not continue due to exhaustion.

Mike Tiberi 4-0 (2 KOs) scored an exciting first round stoppage over Allen Moore 1-3 (1 KO). Tiberi immediately came out swinging and ate a few punches from Moore. Tiberi retaliated by dropping Moore with a picture perfect left hook which sent the mouth piece flying right next to yours truly ringside. Tiberi followed up by dropping a still shaken Moore just seconds later. Moore attempted to get up but referee Allan Huggins saw he was unfit to continue and stopped the contest only 2:23 into it.

Wilmington Delaware?s Ryan Belasco 5-2-3 (1 KO) had a lackluster draw with Brian Miller 1-0-2. Both men had small spurts of aggression although neither man was hurt at any point. Belasco and Miller often fought in close, leading to plenty of clinches and an uneventful fight which saw all three judges score it 38-38.

Fiorentino fights for third world title

“The Ultimate Showdown II” Pro-Am Boxing Show
Jan. 26 at Mansfield SportsPlex

MANSFIELD, Mass. (January 10, 2008) ? Reigning IWBF featherweight and NABF super featherweight champion Missy “The Fury” Fiorentino, headlines “The Ultimate Showdown II” pro-am boxing show, presented by Peter Manfredo, Sr. in association with Bash For Cash, on January 26 at the Mansfield SportsPlex in Mansfield, Massachusetts.

Fiorentino (16-1, 6 KOs), a Rhode Island Sheriff out of Cranston, fights for her third world title belt in three different weight classes having already captured the IWBF featherweight and lightweight titles. She has since relinquished the latter belt because of IWBF rules restricting champions to only one division.

Roger Williams College graduate Fiorentino battles Ela “Bam Bam” Nunez (5-2, 1 KO), a single mother of four, in the 10-round main event despite Missy risking a mandated title shot against WBC super featherweight champion Jelena Mrdjenovich (21-2, 11 KOs). Fiorentino earned that with a unanimous 10-round decision last July against previously unbeaten Cindy Serrano (15-0-1) in a WBC title elimination fight that was also for the NABF belt.

“She (Mrdjenovich) has until April (to make her mandatory) and I haven’t fought since July,” Missy said. “I needed a fight in between as long as it was at 130 pounds. I want to win world titles in three different weight classes. It’ll be nice fighting close to home. Some people came to New York for my last fight but I’ll have a lot more support there this fight. Nunez is aggressive, comes forward, which is good. Her style is the same as mine and I’d rather fight somebody like than chasing ’em around the ring. It’s going to be a good fight.”

Three of New England?s brightest pro prospects are also on the card — New Hampshire cruiserweight Rich Gingras, Whitman (MA) super middleweight Mark “The Italian Bazooka” DeLuca (3-0, 2 KOs), and Worcester (MA) middleweight Edwin Rodriguez making his pro debut.

Gingras (7-0, 4 KOs), of Claremont (NH), was the 2006 Ringside World heavyweight champion before turning professional a year ago. He faces 18-fight veteran Carlos “The Headbanger” Jones in a six-round bout. DeLuca (3-0, 2 KOs), the 2004 National Silver Gloves champion, takes on Cory Jones (2-1) in a four-round match.

The 22-year old Rodriguez, born in the Dominican Republic, is making his much-anticipated pro debut after winning 89 of 93 amateur matches, highlighted by gold-medal performances in the 2006 National Golden Gloves Championships and 2005 United States Championship.

Seven amateur matches also scheduled featuring four Master’s Division matches: Foxboro police officer David Fascaldo vs. Mass. Department of Corrections officer Eric Flaherty; “Easy” Ed Nelson, of Brockton, vs. former New York City police officer Steve “The Steel” Gentile; retired U.S. Navy Seals Captain Tony “The Tiger” O’Brien, of Brockton, vs. Louisiana firefighter Bruce McDaniels; Foxboro police officer Frank Acevedo vs. Louisiana firefighter J.R. “The Lion” Moore.

Other amateurs on the card are 29-year-old heavyweight James DeLuca, as well as 15-year-olds James Perella, of Mansfield, and Toka Kahn, of Pawtucket.

A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Wounded Warrior Project assisting U.S. armed forces men and women severely injured during conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other places around the world.

Tickets are priced at $25.00 (general admission), $50.00 (open seating), $75.00 (ringside) and $175.00 (VIP invitation only). Call 401.723.1359, 508.509.3236 or go to www.bashforcashllc.com to purchase tickets or for additional information.

PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

Missy Fiorentino: “I’m training hard and looking forward to fighting for my third world title at three different weight classes. My last fight I won the North American title at 130 pounds. Peter?s (Manfredo, Sr.) is my trainer and he’s going to have me in great shape.”

Rich Gingras: “I’m not much of a talker but I bring a big game. I’m going to dominate the fight from the start. If it goes six rounds it’s up to him.”

Mark DeLuca: “I’m excited to be fighting locally instead of New York, Kansas or anywhere else we’ve fought as amateurs. I’m excited to be a New England fighter. We have some tough fighters here ? Missy’s probably the toughest. I’m excited to be on this card with her, Edwin and Rich. I’m going to try and blast this guy out in the first round. I’m going to bring the heart back to Boston and New England.”

Edwin Rodriguez: “I’m looking forward to my pro debut. I?m ready. I’m dying to get into the ring and do what I do ? box!”

BARKER TO FACE BENDALL FOR COMMONWEALTH MIDDLEWEIGHT TITLE BOUT

Posted on | January 13, 2008 | 1 Comment

Hennessy Sports in association with GoldenPalace.net are proud to announce?

“Dazzling” Darren Barker will make his first defence of his Commonwealth Middleweight Title against former European title challenger Steve Bendall at York Hall, Bethnal Green on Friday, 22nd February, to be broadcast live on Sky Sports.

This will mark the second time in as many fights that Barker will appear at York Hall the most historic boxing venue in London. In November Barker captured the Commonwealth title there by dominating previously unbeaten in 20 fights and tough Australian Ben Crampton, a performance that generated an unbelievably loud and lively response from Barkers enthusiastic fans.

For his first defence Barker faces a tough challenge in the experienced and dangerous southpaw Steve Bendall (28-3). Bendall coming off of three consecutive wins and going undefeated in 2007 will certainly be looking to continue his winning ways in 2008 and upset Champion Barker.

Barker has compiled an unbeaten and impressive record since turning professional after winning the Gold Medal at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester.

Barker now (16-0) knows that Bendall has been in with some very good opposition, but is confident that he will retain his Commonwealth Title in “Dazzling” fashion.

“Darren is an exceptional talent and has the potential to be a big star of British Boxing. I’m looking to get Darren US exposure this year so an impressive win over Bendall will path the way for this” said promoter Mick Hennessy.
