Interview With James Kirkland

By Matt Yanofsky

I had the pleasure of speaking with Junior Middleweight prospect James ?Mandingo Warrior? Kirkland 21-0 (18 KO?s}. Kirkland was victorious On November 30th; impressively stopping the dangerous Allen Conyers in the first round after Conyers sent him the canvas for the first time in his career.

MY: James, First off congrats on the win. Allen Conyers shocked a lot of us by putting you on the canvas and this was your first time dealing with adversary tell us about it.

JK: It was a surprise but something I needed to experience. I will continue to work on my defense. The punch didn?t hurt me I was caught off balance because my back foot was up and I was trying to turn away while he hit me and that?s what dropped me.

MY: Your last two Showbox fights have not gone past two rounds. Do you get frustrated that outside of Ossie Duran, no one has been able to give you rounds or are you pleased to get quick stoppages over fighters who are generally regarded as tough like Billy Lyell and Mohammad Said?

JK: I?m happy, it?s been a privilege to be on Showbox and put on a good fight and show the people who I am. It?s always good to get them out of there quickly.

MY: You?ve been featured plenty on Showbox. Are you happy being on Showbox or are you thinking about moving up and fighting on Showtime Championship Boxing or HBO?

JK: I love Showbox but as far as the whole world seeing me, HBO and Showtime Championship Boxing is where I want to be in my next fight.
MY: James, the division currently has four different champions. Out of the 4 champions Cory Spinks, Vernon Forrest, Joachim Alcine, and Sergiy Dzinziruk which one would you want to fight the most and why?

JK: I am not very familiar with Alcine or Dzinziruk. I would love to fight Spinks or Forrest because if I press the fight, I can beat them. I?ve seen Forrest and Spinks train and fight plenty of times so I?m very familiar with them. I?d beat Alcine or Dzinziruk too even though I haven?t seen them fight. That doesn?t make a difference, because I don?t watch tapes of any of my opponents.

MY: Recently, a few of your stablemates have ripped your promoter Gary Shaw and Nonito Donaire took it public. How would you assess your promoter and do you feel he is doing his job?

JK: Gary has done a good job for me. He has gotten me good fights and put on TV. I will allow Gary to help me become a world champion and im satisfied with his handling of me.

MY: When can we expect to see you in the ring again?

JK: Mid February to early March. My manager and promoter will work to get me the best opponent available.

MY: Thanks for your time. What do you have to say to your fans and the readers of Unlimitedfightnews.Com?

JK: Keep watching me when im on TV. I look forward to showing you bigger and better fights vs the top guys at 154 and keep rooting for me.

Jorge Teron is ?The Truth?

?Holiday Hits? Dec. 13 at The Roseland Ballroom also showcasing Joe Greene & Peter Quillin

NEW YORK CITY (December 7, 2007) ? Unbeaten Bronx lightweight prospect Jorge ?The Truth? Teron steps-up in class against Mexican knockout artist Adrian ?Canon? Navarette in the 10-round co-feature December 13 on the ?Holiday Hits? pro boxing show, co-promoted by Ring Promotions and Cedric Kushner?s Gotham Boxing, at The Roseland Ballroom in Manhattan.

WBA No. 9 rated middleweight contender challenger ?Mean? Joe Greene (16-0, 12 KOs), the 2004 National Golden Gloves Tournament champion and reigning NABA middleweight champion from Queens (NY), headlines in the 10-round main event. Undefeated middleweight Peter ?Kid Chocolate? Quillin (15-0, 12 KOs), of Brooklyn, faces battle-tested Troy ?TNT? Lowry (27-7, 16 KOs), of St. Paul (MN), in an eight-round Special Middleweight Attraction.

The 22-year-old Teron (18-0-1, 11 KOs), WBC No. 20 rated lightweight and 3-time New York Golden Gloves champion, will use his long reach and height advantage (4-inches, 6? 0? to 5? 8?) to box the power-punching Navarette (16-4-1, 13 KOs), former Intercontinental Mundo Hispano title-holder.

Teron is coming off of impressive back-to-back victories against Jefferson Auraad Rodriguez (20-10) by first-round TKO and an eight-round unanimous decision (80-72, 80-72, 79-73) and near shutout in his last action (September 5, 2007) versus Mike Gonzalez (10-1-1).

?It?s always exciting to fight at home because my family and friends watching makes me happy,? Teron said. ?I?m also excited to be fighting in the co-feature for the first time. It?s a progression of my career and I want to show everybody what I can do. I?ll be headlining my own show soon. In 2008, I plan on fighting one or two 10-rounders and then I?ll be ready to take on the top lightweights in the world. I?m ready for the top level; no more swing bouts or 8-rounders. I?m fighting 10-rounders and eventually 12-rounders. I feel great for this fight.?

TUF FINAL SHOW BEFORE THE FINALE RECAP

Posted on | December 5, 2007 | No Comments

[mpinpage]

Getting ready for the Finale.
It looks like one of the four finalists is going to walk off the show for some reason. What kind of good reason would make someone give up their dream on the last week after they’ve been there all this time, gone through all this, what could possibly make someone give it up? We’ll find out soon….

The 4 Finalists are:
Mac
George
Matt
Tommy

Matt Arroyo seems to have hurt a rib. Looks like it may be cracked as well. He’s talking about he’s not sure if he’s going to fight or not. I don’t see how it’s even his decision at this point. I thought if there was a medical issue, automatically they were out. Hmmmm.

Ok so they hyped this “walk out” thing up way more than it really was if that was it. The guy had a freaking cracked rib. You can’t roll around and swing for the fences with a cracked rib. I don’t think Dana really understood (or maybe he knew more than we did) that it was cracked.

Anyway the guy chose not to fight. They would have let him fight so I guess the rib couldn’t have been too bad. Anyway, Matt Arroyo is OUT of the finals and so they brought a few guys in to see who was “enthusiastic” about fighting Mac Danzig and moving into the finals as an alternate.

First they ask War Machine…..and he was not wanting to fight Mac
Then they ask Ritchie and he said the right words but you could tell he did not really want that fight either
Then walks in John Kolosci and he was very enthusiastic about wanting to redeem himself and he took the fight. Incidently it was Mac Danzig who beat him the last time to put him out of contention but as fate would have it, they have a rematch. John Kolosci has a pro record of 8-4. Though he has more fights than some of the guys in the house he still is not nearly as experienced as Mac and I don’t really see him being able to take Mac but hopefully he will make a better showing this time around. I give the guy a ton of credit for wanting to take the fight. He’s fought Mac. He knows he’s only human unlike some of the other guys who may look at Mac as “unbeatable.” Danzig’s record officially is 17-4-1

So here’s their fight:
Mac Danzig vs. John Kolosci
Round 1: John comes out with a good leg kick. Another good leg kick. Throws a high kick but falls. Mac is taking his time waiting for a mistake. John starts throwing a jab. Mac throws a leg kick. Mac is constantly moving looks like he could be more explosive. Waiting to explode is more like it. Clinched. Both throw some knees. Mac gets a takedown. John looking for a kimora. Mac keeps hitting John in the back of the head. Mac gets a pretty easy rear naked choke. Fast and John offers no defense to it.

Mac sheds a few tears after the match and he moves to the finals. Mac Danzig will be the next ULTIMATE FIGHTER. No doubt about it in my mind. This is a great showcase for him for people to get to know him and it’s a proven formula how the UFC is building stars. Mac says he’s been doing this a long time and there were times he thought about just quitting but now he’s so glad he stuck with it cause this is his chance. He finally gets to fight at the Big Show and most probably is going to win it. He could be a real force in the UFC welterweight division also. I could see him having to fight one these coaches for a title one day possibly or George St. Pierre. Good stuff. The new breeds continue to emerge.

I’m sorry. I just got too excited after seeing Mac rip it up again. I’m not giving enough credit to Tommy Speers and George. Both of these guys also have a good chance at winning.

This fight may be the best fight of the show besides the final. I think these guys match up well and should be exciting. George is no joke and neither is Tommy. Tommy is strong as an ox and can end the fight in one punch if he connects.

Next semi-final fight

Tommy Speers 9-1 vs. George Sotiropolous 7-2
Round 1: The ref kept telling Tommy to watch the fingers and sure enough Tommy poked him right in the eye. Ref had to call time. George lands a good shot to the face. Tommy lands a good one. Both exchange blows. George staying in the pocket. Tommy drops George just like I said he could. Knocks George out. Big right hand drops him then lands a couple for good measure and George goes out.

I’m gonna tell you something right now…….

Don’t you dare make the mistake of counting Tommy Speers out against Mac Danzig. I told you last week that Tommy Speers is a tough s.o.b. and I was just saying he could drop a guy if he connects and he connected.

I have suddenly become very excited about the FINAL MATCH between Mac Danzig and Tommy Speers because I have no idea who will win.

I am looking more forward to this fight than any other fight in Ultimate Fighter history. That is no joke. Damn damn damn. Saturday’s card has just turned into one hell of an event.

I don’t even know who I want to win. I like both of these guys alot. For once I can just sit back and enjoy a great battle and I have a feeling we might see two contracts handed out.

This turned out to be a GREAT Ultimate Fighter. Loved it.

Very Ironic that Matt Hughes’ team started out badly and then ended up winning the whole thing because both guys in the fnals are from Team Hughes.

MALIGNAGGI COMMENTS ON HIS RIVALS

Posted on | December 5, 2007 | No Comments

Malignaggi plays ?The Name Game?

VERO BEACH, Florida (December 5, 2007) ? International Boxing Federation light welterweight champion Paulie ?The Magic Man? Malignaggi took a break from his Vero Beach training camp, where he?s preparing for his first title defense January 5 on Showtime Championship Boxing against No. 1 contender Herman ?The Black Panther? Ngoudjo (16-1, 9 KOs) at Bally?s Casino in Atlantic City, to play boxing?s version of ?The Name Game.?

The outspoken Brooklyn boxer, rated No. 2 by The Ring, commented on some of the top welterweights and light welterweights in the world:

Floyd Mayweather: ?The best pound-for-pound in boxing today, maybe ever. He dominates and is definitely the smartest boxer.?

Ricky Hatton: ?Workmanlike but a little overrated. He?s not great but is a good fighter who is tough and a worker. He?s overrated in that some believe he?s the best.?

Miguel Cotto: ?One of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world today — very powerful, strong, hungry and determined.?

Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr.: ?I didn?t see his last fight but he surprised me by beating (Ray) Sanchez, who I know from the amateurs. Chavez came back from being down on two cards to stop Sanchez. Maybe, he has gotten a little better.?

Herman Ngoudjo: ?Another workmanlike fighter but not the same as Gavin Rees because he doesn?t throw as many punches. What you see is what you get with him. He?s a former Olympian and I expect him to come into our fight at 100-percent. He?s never been given anything and has come up the hard way. I?m looking forward to fighting him.?

Junior Witter: ?Probably the most dangerous, underrated, unappreciated fighter in boxing. I?d love to meet him in the ring but that?s up to the networks. Witter is definitely the best light welterweight in England.?

Demetrious Hopkins: ?Good family pedigree and a solid fighter. He?ll lose his first pro fight in 2008 when he meets Paulie Malignaggi.?

Lovemore N?dou: ?The biggest clown in boxing today. He?s like Barnum & Bailey, you see the same show. His recent words and actions make him look even more stupid to the media and fans.?

Gavin Rees: ?I?ve watched some clips of his fights and he seems like a rugged fighter who throws a lot of punches. Another workmanlike fighter, but he won?t last too long as a title holder.?

Ricardo Torres: ?A strong fighter who can?t fight a lick.?

Timothy Bradley: ?I know him from the amateurs. He?s a darkhorse junior welterweight right now and he?ll eventually become a contender in this division.?

Jose Luis Castillo: ?Past his prime; a legend in his day.?

Vivian Harris: ?Another underappreciated fighter who has been mismanaged. It?s a shame that his loss to Witter has hurt his career so much. It shouldn?t have.?

Kendall Holt: ?A solid fighter who could become world champion. He?s had a couple of bad breaks. It?s all up to him. He has all of the physical tools but, mentally, he has to overcome negativity and setbacks. If he can overcome that he can be world champion.?
