RICKY “THE HITMAN” HATTON BELOVED IN ENGLAND WANTS U.S. FANS TO KNOW MORE OF HIS CHARISMATIC PERSONALITY

DID YOU KNOW?.

Las Vegas, NV(December 4, 2007)?Today Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton made his grand arrival at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas, NV in preparation for his mega fight against “Pretty Boy” Floyd Mayweather taking place this Saturday, December 8, 2007 at the MGM Grand and live on HBO Pay-Per-View. Although this is Hatton’s fourth fight in the United States, there are still things United States fight fans might like to know.

Did you know?Ricky Hatton is a Member of the British Empire. This distinction was presented to Ricky in recognition of his achievements in and out of the ring. Prince Charles presented Ricky with the Member of the British Empire Medal on January 1, 2007. Ricky is actively involved in local charities, “There is never a day goes by that I don’t do something or sign something to help others less fortunate than myself” said Hatton.

Did you know?If Ricky was not a boxer he would want to be a professional football player for Manchester City. Ricky loves the Manchester City Football Team and he tries to attend all of their matches. As a youngster Ricky played in the midfield and idolized his favorite footballer of all time, Colin Bell, who played for Manchester City. Ricky is friends with Paul Dalglish who plays American football for the Houston Texans.

Did you know ?Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton’s favorite Tommy “The Hitman” Hearns’ fight was against Marvin Hagler. Hatton and Hearns met each other for the first time while Hearns was training at the Phoenix Gym in Manchester for a fight at the MEN Arena.

Did you know?Ricky’s most memorable fan experience was entering the MEN Arena to 22,000 fans who were cheering for him when he fought Kostya Tszyu. Ricky’s worst fan experience was when he received a bottle of beer (Guinness) outside of his hotel room in Grand Rapids with a note from Mayweather saying, “To Vicky Fatton!”

Did you know?During his downtime, Ricky likes to go out with friends and socialize at pubs or clubs. But when in training he spends his down time watching comedy films on DVD or TV and watching professional wrestling with his son Campbell.

MAYWEATHER AND HATTON ARRIVE IN SIN CITY

MAYWEATHER AND HATTON MAKE MGM GRAND ARRIVALS AS BOTH FIGHTERS PREPARE FOR FINAL “UNDEFEATED!” FIGHT WEEK ACTIVITIES AT THE MGM GRAND LIVE ON HBO PAY-PER-VIEW

LAS VEGAS (December 4) . . . “Pretty Boy” Floyd Mayweather, and Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton both arrived at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas for “UNDEFEATED!” for the WBC and Ring Magazine welterweight championship at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and live on HBO Pay-Per-view. Here is what the fighters had to say as they met with media members in town early to cover this mega-bout.

“PRETTY BOY” FLOYD MAYWEATHER

“This is another fight for me and I am totally prepared to do what I have to do Saturday night to beat Ricky Hatton.

“All my other opponents said they were going to beat me too and I’m still undefeated.

“When have you ever heard Ricky Hatton talk trash before. He won’t say it to my face but in front of the cameras he is really acting up. We did a five-city tour and the only time he talked tough was when he was home in Manchester. Now he’s talking on HBO’s 24/7 too. You know what I call him?a camera gangster. If I’m going to talk about you I am going to do it to your face, right in front of you.

“His mother probably wants to tell him, “go in there and kill him” but the dad stopped her from going that far. I personally would never say anything about his mother or father. My grandmother, who raised me, told me never to speak badly about anyone else’s parents. I wouldn’t respect him like that no would my mother ever say anything like that about one of my opponents.

“The fight won’t go the distance. I can promise you that

“I just am happy that I have been able to make a nice life for my family. My kids are happy, my grandmother who raised me is living a good life and my mother is well provided for. I don’t have to worry about anything else. It’s just who I am.

“Ricky Hatton has never faced anyone with any talent like I have. All those British fans coming to the fight are going to have the chance to be part of the “Floyd Mayweather Experience.”

RICKY “THE HITMAN” HATTON

“A lot can be said before the fight and he has been saying all kinds of things, but all he’s doing is lying to the papers.

“The reason I came to fight in the US in the first place was to get a fan base and here we are at the grand arrivals and I’m getting all of the cheers. Not one person cheered for Floyd, they are all my fans. We are here in his hometown, in Las Vegas, and not one fan in the crowd. He seems like a confident man, but I think he’s a bit insecure. This is his hometown and if I got booed in my hometown of Manchester, I would hate that kind of reception.

“When the talk of his hand being hurt surfaced and that the fight might be canceled, it was all squashed immediately so it never had the chance to sink in with me.

“He’s had all of these excuses, Dancing with the Stars, his hands, his shoulders, 24/7, etc but I just throw it over my head, I want to fight the best Floyd Mayweather there is, he says he’s the best, so I want the best on Saturday.

“He’s training as hard as ever, and he’s in great shape, but I don’t think he thinks I’m as good as I am.

“I think in the Castillo fight a lot of people say I did better than Floyd and then others say Castillo had seen better days, but I’ve never seen one fight where Floyd has taken the bull by the horns and gone after him and that’s what he’s got to do on Saturday.

“He calls me all kinds of name, Ricky Fatten, says that I only fight the “has beens,” none of that stuff matters to me.

“Floyd has barely scrapped by through the skin of his teeth on a couple of occasions. In the fight with Oscar, Oscar died in the last six rounds of the fight and Mayweather only won that fight by the skin of his teeth because of that.”

Napa Retains British Title Against Power

Posted on | December 4, 2007 | No Comments

Ian Napa retained the British bantamweight crown Friday night with a tremendous effort on a Frank Maloney promotion at London’s Newham Leisure Centre, posting a hard fought unanimous decision win over former champion Martin Power in a rematch to their 2005 clash.

The reigning champion was hard pressed early by Power, who put together quick combinations and showed little ill effects from losing his previous two bouts to Commonwealth champion Tshifhiwa Munyai.

But Napa was undaunted and soon took over the bout, coming forward behind a sharp jab to push Power back, punishing the challenger with an energy sapping body assault.

The challenger couldn’t keep Napa from coming forward and “Dappa” picked up rounds by brilliantly outboxing the taller Power. The final frame was a dogfight with the tenacious Power marshaling every ounce of strength for one last push to take the twelfth and final round.

When the cards were read, Napa retained his title via scores of 117-112 and 117-111 (twice). Napa improves to 16-6 (1) while Power drops to 19-3 (8).

On the undercard, South Africa’s towering Commonwealth bantamweight titlist Tshifhiwa Munyai continued to impress, fighting for the second straight contest at featherweight and putting in a world class performance in seeing off Ugandan Abdul “Cobra” Tebazalwa over eight rounds on points 79-74.

The hard punching Sweden based Tebazalwa, 9-2 (7), was coming off a narrow split decision loss against WBF feather titlist Choi Tseveenpurev just a month ago and had the confidence press his argument, but Munyai, 15-0-1 (8), nullified those efforts with his superb ability to fight at any distance and adapt to any style.

Also on the bill, featherweight hot prospect Akaash Bhatia, 9-0 (2), continued to improve, raking opponent Riaz Durgahed, 6-11-1 (1), with lightning quick combinations to take every session of their six rounder, 60-54.

Lightweight Henry Castle, 15-4 (8), got back on track with a bruising 78-75 points victory over Kevin O’Hara, 13-3 (3), after eight rounds.

French import Christopher Sebire, 12-1 (7), added to the woes of welterweight Robert Lloyd Taylor, 13-7 (4), handing the Englishman a third straight loss, winning the six rounder 60-55.

Light heavyweight Tony Salem, 7-0 (3), stayed perfect, stopping opponent Carl Wild, 5-7 (1), when the Sheffield based boxer couldn’t answer the bell for the fourth round of a scheduled six.

A slew of four round bouts capped off the card, with welterweight Scott Woolford, 5-1 (0), returning from a loss to post a difficult win over previously unbeaten Dave Ryan, 4-1 (1), by a score of 39-38, light middle Jamie Radford, 2-0 (1), gave fellow prospect Dave Murray, 2-1 (0), his first loss via a stoppage at 1:47 of the first round.

Super middle Dwayne Lewis, 2-0-1 (1), won his fight with Lee Nicholson, 3-11-1 (0), when the Doncaster man couldn’t answer the bell for the second round and welter Ross Hewitt, 1-0 (0), won his professional debut with a 39-37 points verdict against veteran Kristian Laight, 5-38-5 (0).

Frank Maloney Promotions returns to action next Saturday, December 8, at the Robin Park Centre in Wigan, England where the UK’s top light middleweight, Jamie Moore, challenges European champion Zaurbek Baysangurov, Gary Woolcombe meets Marcus Portman for the vacant British light middleweight championship, Commonwealth welterweight champion Ali Nuumbembe defends against hot prospect Craig Watson and English super flyweight titlist Jamie McDonnel faces off with English flyweight champ Chris Edwards for the vacant British super flyweight crown.

In the Ring With Bob Fitzsimmons

Posted on | December 4, 2007 | No Comments

Now Available!

This is the third book in Adam Pollack?s series on the heavyweight champions of the gloved era. Bob Fitzsimmons was boxing?s first pound for pound great, winning the world middleweight title before becoming the world heavyweight champion (and later lightheavyweight champ). Combining both crafty skill and crushing power, Fitzsimmons was able to knock out heavyweights when he only weighed 158 pounds!

This meticulous and tremendously researched book uses multiple local primary sources from New Zealand , Australia , and America to chronicle Fitzsimmons? boxing career. It contains detailed fight descriptions never before revealed, round by round reports, pre- and post-fight analysis, daily training regimens, critical analysis of opponents? careers, discussion of skills, techniques, strategies, strengths, and weaknesses, and explains how legal, political, social, and economic issues affected and impeded fights.

The book also includes stories of fixed fights, conspiracies, legal battles, trials, threats of violence and imprisonment made by governors, judges, and militiamen, and verbal jousting, taunting, boasting, and even physical confrontations between Bob Fitzsimmons and James J. Corbett.

464 pages, 63 photos and illustrations, 968 footnotes, bibliography, index, and appendix (containing a complete Fitzsimmons career record).

Adam J. Pollack is the author of John L. Sullivan: The Career of the First Gloved Heavyweight Champion, and In the Ring With James J. Corbett.

Preface: The Series Continues

Welcome to the world of the fight to the finish, where championship bouts continued until someone was knocked out, where there were no mouthpieces, no handwraps, no protective foul cups, no training headgear, where floors and ring posts were often hard, when gloves were only five ounces and the eight-ounce glove was considered a big pillow to only be used in friendly exhibitions, when fights were never stopped on cuts, when a fight was rarely stopped just because a guy was a little wobbly or because he went down a number of times, where even decisions were based on who did the most damage and was the more aggressive, not just based on who knew how to tap, run, grab and survive. This was a time when your pay depended on success, when the phrase ?winner take all? was not just a bluff. These were some tough guys.

This is the third book in my heavyweight champion series, Reigns of Fame and Shame. The first two were John L. Sullivan: The Career of the First Gloved Heavyweight Champion, and In the Ring With James J. Corbett. My goal has been to answer the questions that no other book answered. I wanted history based not on speculation, hearsay, and legend, but based on what local reports said at the time.

I have found that achieving the richest and most complete understanding of these fighters? careers is accomplished by reference to multiple local primary source accountings. These accounts enliven the opponents and the fights, offer new facts, discuss issues that secondary sources failed to consider, and give fresh perspective on matters previously only discussed in a limited or incomplete way. Greater than ever before, this book offers a much stronger understanding of Bob Fitzsimmons? career, skills, and ability, and the era?s fight scene, including top contenders and the legal, political, and social issues which affected the fight game.

Using mostly local contemporary newspaper reports, this book provides a more thorough analysis and detailed discussion of:

Bob Fitzsimmons? many Australian bouts. Local Australian primary sources shed new light on Fitz?s early career, and show the long road he took to stardom. Because so many of the era?s great fighters were produced in Australia , to understand the world?s fight scene one must be familiar with Australian boxing.

Fitz?s alleged fixed fight with Jim Hall. Find out whether Bob took a dive.

The legal and political fallout from the deaths of Con Riordan and Andy Bowen.

The alleged fixed fight with Tom Sharkey. The behind the scenes story is itself worth the price of admission. The court battle and all the sensational testimony are fully covered. Was it a grand conspiracy?

The complete back and forth verbal jousting, taunting, and confident exclamations between Fitzsimmons and Jim Corbett. No other fight ever had as much free advertising and hot discussion as a result of its mouthy combatants. They were the kings of smack talk, the inventors of building up fights with verbal and even physical confrontation.

The unbelievable legal and political battles the boxers and promoter Dan Stuart had to go through in order to bring fights off. This story has governors, armed militiamen, and judges threatening violence and lengthy prison sentences, following, chasing, and arresting these men, and generally impeding the sport?s progress in any way that they could.

All of Fitzsimmons? American fights and most of his exhibitions (up to the heavyweight championship), including lesser known and previously unknown bouts, and massive pre- and post-fight coverage of his most significant bouts. This also includes Fitz and Corbett?s daily training regimen leading up to their big fight. Even new controversial facts about the Corbett fight are revealed.

I hope you enjoy learning about Bob Fitzsimmons as much as I did!

Gary Woolcombe Gets British Title Opportunity

Posted on | December 4, 2007 | No Comments

Santa Claus has come down Gary Woolcombe’s chimney early. Woolcombe, who was preparing for an eight round bout on November 30, was given an early Christmas present when Jamie Moore’s European title fight was cancelled.

Woolcombe will now challenge for the vacant British light middleweight title and co-headline the “Home Guard” bill at Robin Park Centre in Wigan, England on Saturday, December 8. The card will serve as the lead-in to Sky Sports’ PPV broadcast of Ricky Hatton’s WBC welterweight challenge to Floyd Mayweather in Las Vegas.

At the age of 25, Woolcombe, 24-1 (9), relishes the opportunity to step up among the big names in the light middleweight division and grabbed the opportunity as soon as it was offered to him by promoter Frank Maloney. He’s determined not to let his South London fans down, of which 150 will be making the journey up north to Wigan.

Woolcombe will face WBF titlist Marcus Portman, 18-5-1 (3), a southpaw from West Bromwich who has also asked for 100 tickets for his fans making the trip from his hometown.

Both combatants were already in training for fights and were inside the check weight limits comfortably when they were weighed last night.

Whoever wins this title can look forward to good paydays on the British scene and even a clash with ex-champion Jamie Moore in the near future.

Also on the card will be the first fight for the newly created British super flyweight belt, between Chris Edwards, 10-12-3 (3), and the undefeated young Jamie McDonnel, 8-0-1 (2).

Jamie, from Doncaster, is being tipped to become a star of the British lighter weight divisions, but Edwards, the tough little warrior from Stoke, has other plans and intends to throw a spanner in the works in the development of McDonnel.

The third title fight on the bill sees a Commonwealth welter championship contest between the talented reigning titlist Ali Nuumbembe, 18-2-1 (6), and one of Britain’s most underrated fighters, Craig Watson, 11-1 (3), the man who had Amir Khan on his backside in Amir’s last amateur fight.

Watson is a throwback and once he receives a phone call from his promoter, all he asks is “where do I have to turn up and what weight do I have to be”? He never asks to see a tape or asks his opponent’s record; he just loves to fight.

This fight could be the show stealer of the whole card.

Frank Maloney Promotions presents “Home Guard” featuring Gary Woolcombe vs. Marcus Portman for the British light middleweight title, Chris Edwards vs. Jamie McDonnel for the British super flyweight title and Ali Nuumbembe vs. Craig Watson for the Commonwealth welterweight title along with full undercard at Robin Park Arena in Wigan, England on Saturday, December 8, 2007.

Tickets are priced at ?125, ?80 and ?40 and are available by logging onto www.frankmaloney.com or by calling the Box Office at 0871 226 1508. Prices include the big screen showing of the Hatton vs. Mayweather contest.

Doors open at 7:30PM with the first fight commencing at 8:00PM.

Sky Sports will televise the action live on Sky Box Office starting at 22:00 hrs.

When proboxing was allowed Sandell was the biggest name but proved to be rather limited. She goes out at 6-4-2
