MAYWEATHER VS. HATTON

** In-Depth Preview and Analysis **

By Tony Penecale

Rarely will you find two more dissimilar fighters. In one corner is Floyd Mayweather, the brash and cocky champion and #1 Pound-for-Pound boxer in the world today. In the other corner is Ricky Hatton, the tough, blue-collar fighter from England. The only similarities are the internal drive to be the best in the world and the undefeated record each man carries into the ring. When the battle ends in Las Vegas, who will reign supreme and who will lose their unblemished record?

STYLE

Mayweather: Arguably, he is the fastest fighter on the face of the earth today. A very relaxed boxer who does everything well with an arsenal that includes a snapping jab, accurate right hand, and left hook that can be doubled and tripled with tremendous effect. Uses feint moves to freeze opponents and open punching lanes. Tucks his chin well behind his shoulder to roll with punches. Even on the ropes, he is a difficult target to land a solid punch. He doesn?t have great punching power. Most of his stoppage victories come from outpunching and outclassing his opponents but rarely scoring clean knockouts.

Hatton: A pure pressure fighter who makes each bout a war of attrition. Likes to get right in his opponents chest and maul on the inside, clutching, brawling, and winging strength-sapping body shots with both hands. Once the opponent is worn down, he is a very good finisher. With such a wide-open attack, his offense serves as his best defense. He can be hit on the way in but is willing to take two punches to land one of his own.

STRENGTHS

Mayweather: * Experience ? Boxing is in Mayweather?s blood since his childhood. Completed an extensive amateur career by competing in the ?96 Olympic games. He has been competing successfully on a championship level for the past nine years, facing and defeating all styles.

* Speed ? Speed Kills. Mayweather has incredible hand and foot speed, which allows him to move inside, unload his offense, and dart out of range before his opponent can set himself.

* Ring Generalship ? Mayweather knows every inch of the ring and how to control a fight. When to attack, when to box, and when to coast, Mayweather owns the ring when he is in there.

Hatton: * Body Attack ? Once on the inside, Hatton cranks out repeated punishing body shots. Any part of the torso, including arms, shoulders, and hips are relentlessly pounded until the hands come down.

* Aggression ? Hatton attacks from the opening bell. While he tends to gain weight between bouts, he trains intensely and is always in tremendous shape. He doesn?t give his opponent a second to breathe. In conjunction with his body attack, Hatton?s aggressiveness will leave an opponent both physically and psychologically beaten.

* Passion ? For the last several years, Hatton has been a popular figure in his native England. He yearns to reach that status in the United States. There is no doubt that he will bring everything he has and more to the biggest event of his career.

WEAKNESSES

Mayweather: * Brittle Hands ? Mayweather has been plagued throughout his career with hand injuries. The soreness in his hands, especially the right hand, reduces Mayweather?s exceptional offense, often forcing him to rely on his foot speed to dance around and pitter-pat opponents.

* Lack of Focus ? Mayweather was considering retirement after his last fight. Just a few months ago, he was competing on Dancing with the Stars, which potentially could have lasted until 12 days before the bout. He also has to deal with the continuing personal and professional rift with his father and former trainer, Floyd Sr.

* Punching Power ? Most of Mayweather?s stoppage wins have come from an accumulation of punches. The usual result is the referee or opposing corner stopping the bout to prevent further punishment. It is rare to see Mayweather finish a bout with one punch dating back to his days as a 130 lb boxer.

Hatton: * Balance ? When pressing the action, Hatton has a bad habit of stepping in with his back foot, squaring himself up and giving his opponent a wide open target to hit.

* Skin ? Like many English fighters over the years, Hatton has to deal with soft skin. He has been susceptible to facial cuts and bruises, most notably in his fight with Luis Collazo, where Hatton suffered severe swelling to his eyes.

* Size ? Hatton has only competed once at welterweight and he struggled mightily in winning a razor-thin decision over the aforementioned Collazo. His punches were not nearly as effective at creating the havoc that was caused at junior welterweight.

PREVIOUS BOUT

Mayweather: Mayweather won a split decision over the popular crowd favorite and marquee attraction, Oscar De la Hoya. Mayweather was successful boxing in the center of the ring, using his speed to outland De la Hoya but ran into difficulty when De la Hoya pressured him to the ropes. Mayweather used his superior condition to win three of the final four rounds.

Hatton: Hatton stopped former world champion Jose Luis Castillo in four rounds, dropping him for the count with a single body shot. Hatton pressed the fight from the onset, backing Castillo up throughout, before he crashed a vicious hook into the side, which put Castillo down for the count.

3 BEST PERFORMANCES

Mayweather: * Diego Corrales (1/20/01) ? Experts were torn on who to pick in this one with many leaning towards Corrales to win by KO. Mayweather never let him in the bout, knocking him down five times before the bout was halted in the 10th round.

* Arturo Gatti (6/25/05) ? Although Mayweather was a solid betting favorite, many expected Gatti to make things rough for Mayweather. It never happened as Mayweather dealt out a severe beating before Gatti?s corner stopped the bout after six one-sided rounds.

* Angel Manfredy (12/19/98) ? This was Mayweather?s first defense of the WBC Super Featherweight Title and it was coming against a tough and skilled Manfredy. Mayweather staggered Manfredy with the first punch of the fight, kept composure throughout the remainder of the first and most of the second before hurting Manfredy against and unleashing a torrid offensive burst, prompting a referee?s stoppage.

Hatton: * Kostya Tszyu (6/4/05) ? Even though the bout was in Hatton?s native England, many figured he the long-reigning champion, Tszyu, would retain his crown. Hatton applied pressure and never gave Tszyu the range he needed to unleash his offense. The pressure gradually sapped the strength and resolve of the aging champion, forcing him to surrender on his stool after the 11th round.

* Jose Luis Castillo (6/23/07) ? While it was generally regarded the Castillo was on the decline, his epic wars with Diego Corrales were still fresh in people?s minds and there was some doubt if Hatton could deal with the power-punching Mexican. But Hatton ran through him, making Castillo look like a shot fighter, and then finishing matters with one crushing blow to the liver.

* Mike Stewart (10/1/04) ? Before he was a contestant on ?The Contender Season 2?, Stewart was an up-and-coming prospect, coming off a decision loss to Sharmba Mitchell. His travel across the Atlantic Ocean was much more painful as Hatton overwhelmed him, dropping him twice before the bout was stopped. When Stewart was asked if his nose was broken, he responded saying that he felt like ?a lot of things were broken.?

QUESTIONS

Mayweather: * Does Mayweather care enough about boxing to put in a top-flight effort?

* After winning the biggest fight in recent memory, will Mayweather be sufficiently focused and motivated against a smaller, lesser-known opponent?

* If Hatton finds success early, will Mayweather get pulled out of his gameplan and into a brawl?

Hatton: * At the higher weight, will he be able to successfully challenge the world?s best boxer?

* Will Hatton?s weight fluctuations between bouts finally catch up to him?

* If his one-dimensional offensive attack proves unsuccessful, will he be able to adapt in mid-fight?

PENECALE PREDICTION

Hatton has an immense desire to not only take Mayweather?s welterweight title, but to take his spot at the top of the boxing mountain. In order to do so, he knows he must bring the fight to the champion.

Hatton will charge out of his corner at the opening bell and immediately try to force Mayweather back to the ropes. Mayweather will start the bout on his toes, looking to avoid Hatton?s rushes and get a feel for what Hatton brings to the table. While infrequently, Hatton will, on several occasions, succeed in getting close to Mayweather, where he will clutch him with one arm and punch with the other. Frustrated by his opponent?s tactics, Mayweather will look to Joe Cortez and complain. Once separated, Mayweather will go back to moving, pivoting out of danger, and landing punches on the way out, and while they won?t have much force behind them, they will score cleanly.

By the 3rd round, Mayweather will have spotted an opening in Hatton. Like a pitcher who tips his pitches, Hatton?s habit of squaring himself up will be the equivalent of serving Mayweather a hanging curveball. Mayweather will time Hatton?s rushes and land double right hands which will snap his head back. Mayweather will also start to mix uppercuts into the equation.

Going into the 5th round, Hatton?s face will start to show the effects of the punishment, with him bleeding from the nose and damage around the eyes. He will start to look confused but he will stick with what brought him to the dance and he will make every effort in staying in Mayweather?s chest, in hopes of wearing him down.

The tactic will open up more chances for Mayweather, and from the 7th through the 9th rounds, it will start to become target practice, similar to his win over Gatti. Mayweather will pick his shots, land them cleanly, move on an angle, and fire again with minimal response from Hatton.

At the conclusion of the 9th round, a game but beaten Hatton will return to his corner, where this chief second will stop the bout, to prevent any further punishment.

ROB ZOMBIE WORKING WITH HDNET FIGHTS

ROB ZOMBIE’S HALLOWEEN UNRATED DIRECTOR’S CUT DVD TO SPONSOR
HDNet FIGHTS “RECKLESS ABANDON”
… AND THE FANS WIN!
Saturday, December 15, American Airlines Center, Dallas, TX

DALLAS, TEXAS (December 3) —Mark Cuban’s HDNet FIGHTS has inked a presenting sponsor deal with Rob Zombie’s HALLOWEEN UNRATED DIRECTOR’S CUT DVD for the upcoming “RECKLESS ABANDON,” scheduled for Saturday, December 15 at American Airlines Center in Dallas. The ten-bout mixed-martial-arts event will feature two of the sports top middleweights, Frank Trigg and Jason “Mayhem” Miller, in separate co-main event fights.

Each fan attending the event will receive Rob Zombie’s HALLOWEEN UNRATED DIRECTOR’S CUT DVD, which will also be available in stores starting December 18 from Dimension Films and Genius Products.

For HDNet FIGHTS CEO, Andrew Simon, the match-up with HALLOWEEN was a natural fit. “A lot of our fight fans are fans of the movie as well,” Simon pointed out. “For our customers to be able to come to the fights and also receive a movie, valued at the suggested retail price of $29.95, that’s just an added bonus.”

Rob Zombie’s HALLOWEEN UNRATED DIRECTOR’S CUT is a terrifying re-imagination of the original slasher film HALLOWEEN, and is written, produced, and directed by Rob Zombie (The Devil’s Rejects, House of 1,000 Corpses). The two-disc special edition includes an unrated director’s cut with footage too terrifying for theaters and hours of extras, including an alternate ending, deleted scenes, bloopers, casting sessions and commentary by Rob Zombie.

“What better way to reward our fans than to let them in on this special DVD event,” said Mark Cuban, president and co-founder of HDNet. “Not only will fans see some great fights – they’ll also score a great movie!

The first 200 fans attending the Cageside Club pre-fight dinner will also receive a special copy of the DVD autographed by Rob Zombie. Cageside Club attendees will also be treated to a visit by HALLOWEEN star Tyler Mane, who plays the character of Michael Myers in the movie.

Tickets for “RECKLESS ABANDON” are priced at $25, $50, $100 and $300 (Cageside Club). Cageside Club seating includes: Seating in first 4 rows, Platinum Parking, Pre-Fight Dinner/Meet & Greet, Complimentary T-Shirt and program. Tickets are on sale at the American Airlines Center Box Office and all Ticketmaster Outlets, including www.ticketmaster.com and by phone at 214-373-8000.

In an inter-promotional battle that experts are predicting will be a candidate for “Fight of the Year” – IFL standout Tim Kennedy (8-1) steps into the cage to fight HDNet Fights superstar, Jason “Mayhem” Miller (19-5). The two fought as part of an Extreme Challenge eight-man middleweight tournament in February of 2003. Kennedy won a unanimous decision en route to winning the tournament. Mayhem seeks redemption and will undoubtedly fight with reckless abandon!

Trigg (15-6), a top 10 middleweight in all the latest rankings, will be taking on Edwin Dewees (43-10) in a 3-round clash of top middleweights.

Also slated for action on the card will be one of the world’s top lightweights, Yves Edwards (29-13-1, Houston). Edwards will be taking on Alonzo Martinez (20-8). Pete Spratt returns after delivering a devastating KO in October and Texas favorites Chris Bowles and Jason House will head up a strong card that makes up “RECKLESS ABANDON.”

HEAVYWEIGHT NAGY AGUILERA PROFILE

New York?s latest hot prospect
Heavyweight Nagy Aguilera
Dec. 13 at The Roseland Ballroom showcasing Greene, Teron & Quillin

NEW YORK CITY (December 3, 2007) ? Dominican-born heavyweight prospect Nagy Aguilera, New York?s newest rising star, will be in action again December 13 on the ?Holiday Hits? pro boxing show, co-promoted by Ring Promotions and Cedric Kushner?s Gotham Boxing, at The Roseland Ballroom in Manhattan.

NABA middleweight champion ?Mean? Joe Greene (16-0, 12 KOs), the 2004 National Golden Gloves Tournament champion and WBA No. 9 rated challenger, headlines in the 10-round main event.

WBC No. 20 rated lightweight Jorge ?The Truth? Teron (18-0-1, 11 KOs), 3-time New York Golden Gloves champion, will be in the 10-round co-feature. Unbeaten middleweight Peter ?Kid Chocolate? Quillin (15-0, 12 KOs) takes on Troy ?TNT? Lowry (27-7, 16 KOs) in an eight-round Special Middleweight Attraction.

Two-time New York Golden Gloves champion Aguilera (4-0, 2 KOs), raised in Puerto Rico and fighting out of Newburgh (NY), is matched with Darryl Holley (6-5, 1 KO) in a 6-rounder. ?I first came across Nagy when I was looking for a sparring partner about two months before my fight with (Evander) Holyfield,? Nagy?s advisor and former world heavyweight contender ?Big? Lou Savarese said. ?I was told about a good heavyweight in Newburgh, which is about 1 ? hours north of New York City. It?s a beautiful place, right on the Hudson River, but a rough suburb. I was taken back after sparring with Nagy and wondered why I hadn?t heard of him. He was only 20 at the time (Aguilera is now 21) and said he only had about 30-40 amateur fights. But he seemed more seasoned than that.

?Nagy is so fundamentally sound, but he was doing it working on a shoe-string budget, without the benefit of a strength-and-conditioning coach or eating properly. I introduced him to John Silverman, who is now his manager, and today Nagy has those edges. Nagy has great physical attributes (6-3, 230 pounds) and — it?s odd to say about a 21 year old — but he doesn?t really do anything wrong because he?s so technically solid. Nagy later told me he had 137 amateur bouts having started boxing very young in Puerto Rico before moving to the Bronx about five years ago. Mentally, I?ve never see a fighter so relaxed before a fight ? he sleeps in the locker-room! His timing is starting to come around; two fights ago he knocked out (right out of the ring) a guy (Tyrone Smith) who had never been stopped and in his last fight, he floored an opponent (Elfair McKnight) who had never been down before. Nagy almost knocked him out, too.?

Also fighting on the undercard are New York State lightweight champion Freddy Soto (9-3-2, 5 KOs), light welterweight Jeremy Bryan (1-0), Canadian bantamweight Noriko Kariya (7-2-1, 1 KO), and Long Island heavyweights Darrel Madison (7-1, 3 KOs) and Elfair ?The Wyandanch Warrior? McKnight are matched-up.
Tickets are priced at $150.00, $100.00, $75.00 and $50.00. Call Ring Promotions (516.313.2304) or Gotham Boxing (212.755.1944) to purchase tickets or for more information. Doors open at 6:30 PM, first bout at 7:30 PM.

THE ULTIMATE FIGHTER POST-SHOW REPORT

Posted on | December 2, 2007 | No Comments

[mpinpage]

But here’s a synopsis of the THE ULTIMATE FIGHTER for Episode on Wednesday Nov.28, 2007

I saw Tom “The Barncat” Speers fight his first fight in the WEC last night on Versus. His opponent was Sidney Silva (Silva=most popular name in mma). The fight was back in May. It was sort of funny because Frank Mir, the commentator, was saying how important technique was over strength and talking about how technical Silva was and that Tom Speer was bascially a big strong guy with little technique and just about at that time The Barncat picks up Sidney Silva and slams him then he postures up rears back and delivers a huge right hand to Silva’s face, connects perfectly, and because Silva’s already on his back, his head has nowhere to go except to ricochet off the ground. Fist to Face to Head to Ground then followed it up with some nice ground and pound until the referee stops the match and declares it a TKO. It was an impressive display of power from Tom Speers and makes me realize that his name too will be in the hat also for possilbe victors this season. Mac Danzig, Tom Speers, and George Sotiropolous in my opinion are the fighters who have the best chances of being this season’s Ultimate Fighter.
Tom does seem like a Matt Hughes clone when it comes to their fighting styles and their build. He has that raw brute strength. They keep calling it “that farmboy strength” which is kind of funny. It seems Hughes has really taken to Tom, even though Hughes made the point he’s not there to meet any new friends. But Hughes said Tom reminds him of himself and he thinks Tom has the spirit of a champion, or something to that effect. I do think Tom could be a real force in the Welterweight division with experience and proper training. Mainly I wanted to point out how impressed I was with his performance in the WEC. If you ever get the chance to see it, you should check it out.

The fight tonight is Tom Speers vs. Ben “goofy grin” Saunders. I’ve said it before; Ben’s goofy grin would make me so mad in a fight. But before the fight we have more bored fighter antics. I guess they put a turd in the back part of the toiler where the water goes. They also wrecked the house pretty good after drinking alot. Mac makes fun of Ritchie’s laugh which was annoying. I can feel Mac on this cause I seriously hate being around drunks. Hate it…hate it….hate it. And Ritchies laugh was annoying me, I can’t imagine being in the house with it after you’ve been training hard and they’ve been up drinking.

Best quote of the episode…”Pranks are pranks but when you bring doo doo into the equation that’s fucked up.” That was classic. They called it an upper decker. Definitely childish. Immature. But whaddaya gonna do? Makes for funny TV sort of. Mac said, “These are the type of people representing our sport?”

Ok….so Ben Saunders gave Ben Barrera lots of stitches. And someone just said the same thing Frank Mir said in Tom Speers WEC fight, “Technique will always beat strength.” Well, obviously not always cause Speers whipped dat ass for Sidney Silva. I guess the “goofy grin” I refer to of Ben’s….they refer to as the “sadistic smile”. Whatever it is ahhhh I freakin hate it. OK fight time……I really hope Speers takes Saunders to the pasture. Destroys him like a sick horse. Knocks him down like a sleeping cow.

Round 1 – Clinch, Tom goes for takedown…gets it. Ben looking for submissions. Won’t let Tommy posture up to swing so Tommy picks him up and slams him. Ben is able to get an armbar that looks like he breaks it but Tom gets out. Then Ben gets him in a triangle and he gets out of that somehow. Jesus Christ. Ben’s putting on a clinic and Tom is putting on an escape clinic. I told you Tom looked impressive. Anyone that can survive that armbar is no joke. Tom landing some ground and pound. Ben’s face is bloody. Tom lands some elbows. I wish Rashad would take a few tips from Tom here and do more on the ground. Tom postures up actually stands up and lands a big right just like in that WEC match. Tommy pretty much overpowers Ben on the ground. Ben threw all his ju-jitsu at Tommy and Tommy survived. I’m impressed for sure. I still can’t believe he survived that armbar….that think I swear looked like it was gonna snap.
Round 2 – Tommy takes Ben down in the first 30 seconds but Ben gets up. Tommy throws some knees then takes him down again. Tommy seems to take him down at will. Here comes the g n’ p from Tommy. Tommy takes a huge swing from standing position but misses this time. Tommy is in Ben’s open gaurd. Ben’s looking for an opening for submissions. Ben is doing a good job of not taking too much damage and scrambles once really good but ends up back on his back. Tommy is not doing alot right now but still enough to stay busy. Elbows now from Tommy. OK Ref stands them up. One minute to go. Ben throws a knee but misses. Tommy back on top now. Ben’s is holding his hands good to resist damage but Tommy lands a couple shots. Ref stands them up again 25 seconds. Another takedown for Tommy and that should clinch the win for him easily. Tommy lands some small shots.
To Ben’s credit, he didn’t allow Tommy to do alot of damage from the top but to Tommy’s credit he took Ben down at will and did land some decent ground and pound and stayed as busy as he could considering Ben wouldn’t let him move too much. I thought it was a good fight. Neither guy was able to finish the other but I think Ben actually came closer to finishing it when he had Tommy in that armbar and then a triangle but mostly the armbar. However other than that he landed practically nothing. I would give the win to Tommy though I could see how the judge’s could possibly have it one round each at this point.

UNANIMOUS DECISION…….TOMMY SPEERS.

I’m sticking to what I said before…..The Ultimate Fighter will be either Mac, George, or Tommy.

Mac Danzig will be facing Matt Arroyo. Tommy Speers will be facing George Sotriopolous. At least that’s who made it to the semifinals but I just saw a preview for the last episode and they said that one of these fighters is going to “walk off the show.” So that throws a monkey wrench in the whole thing. It appears a replacement will be made for one of these fighters in the semifinals. The final episode is next Wednesday December 5th and then the Finale will be live on Spike TV Saturday December 8th where the winner of The Ultimate Fighter Season 6 will be decided and with a main event being Clay Quida vs. Roger Huerta.
