Collins; “This is playing out just like Rocky 3”

Lemoore, Calif. – “And I’m Clubber Lang,” said the Merced, Calif. mixed martial artist Phil Collins.

“He (John Alessio) is the superstar. He’s doing all the interviews, the pretty boy and already calling himself the champ,” said Collins, who takes on the Las Vegas, Nev. veteran on Thursday, December 2 at the Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino for the vacant Tachi Palace Fights Welterweight title.

“You know what? I just train. I’m grinding harder than he is. I work harder than him. I’m not all in the press like he is. And I’m going to put it on him like Clubber did Rocky.”

Collins (9-5) is a Central Valley favorite that’s called the Palace his home, fighting in the World Extreme Cagefighting and Palace Fighting Championship and most recently the Tachi Palace Fights where he has won two straight fights.

“This is a big fight for me. It’s the type of fight that I’ve always wanted and this is the fight that I think that can get me out of the area,” Collins said. “I’m tired of beating up all the local guys.”

This bout has turned into a war of words on the social media front with each fighter exchanging words on Twitter and Facebook with Collins most recently saying, “@johnalessio79…lol dismantle??? I don’t think so pretty boy…lmao”

It’s been an exchange between both fighters for several weeks.

Tachi Palace Fights will stream live and free on MMAJunkie.com at 5:30 p.m. (PST) with MMAJunkie’s John Morgan, Tachi Palace Fight’s flyweight champ Ulysses Gomez and Fresno’s B95 Andre Covington cage side with the call.

The stream will be blacked out to fans within 100 mile radius of the Palace unless there is a sellout.

“I’ve seen a little footage on him,” said Alessio (30-13). “He is a tough guy. I’m not going to underestimate him.”

But that doesn’t mean that Alessio believes Collins really beat him.

“I’m taking him serious, but I truly feel I’m better and more well-rounded as a fighter. He doesn’t have better stand up than me and we know that my ground is going to be too much for him,” Alessio added.

“I imagine we will see a lot of standup in this fight. It will be exciting he will throw some big bombs, but I’m a lot more accurate and if it goes to the ground I’ve been on a streak there.”

Alessio has put together an impressive 6-fight win streak with five of the victories coming by submission.

“I’ve fought better guys. I train with better guys. I know that he doesn’t hit harder than Doug Marshall and his jiu-jitsu isn’t as good as Leopoldo Serao’s,” Collins said. “He’s not going to KO me and he won’t sub me.”

In the main event UFC veteran James Irvin of Sacramento, Calif. takes on battle-tested Jorge Oliveira of San Francisco, Calif. Irvin (15-7) snapped 3-fight skid recently with a knock of Angel DeAnda. Meanwhile, Oliveira (4-2-1) will be fighting for the first time in over two years.

The co-main event features a Tachi Palace Fights championship showdown, as current featherweight champ Isaac DeJesus (9-2) of Stockton, Calif. defends his title against Coconut Creek, Fla.’s Micah Miller (15-4).

The 10-bout card also features Brazil’s Jussier da Silva (7-0) against San Diego, Calif.’s Danny Martinez (13-3). Da Silva is widely regarded as the world’s top flyweight and will put that to the test against Martinez, who makes his drop to 125 pounds after a successful run at bantamweight

Michael Oliveira set to make major statement at home in Brazil

MIAMI (Nov. 10, 2010) – Undefeated, UNBC Middleweight Champion Michael “Chairman of the Board” Oliveira returns to his roots November 20, headlining “A Gala Night of Boxing” pro-am event, on a mission to firmly establish himself in his native country.

“A Gala Night of Boxing,” presented by Rumble Star Promotions, in association with Reunion Sports & Marketing, will air live on SporTV and TV Globo International live from Espaco das Americas in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

The 20-year-old Oliveira (11-0, 9 KOs), named by the Brazilian International Press Award’s as its 2009 Athlete of the Year, was born in Sao Paulo but he moved two weeks after birth with his family to Miami. “I’m very excited to be fighting at home for the first time,” Oliveira said from his training camp in Sao Paulo. “This is my coming out party for boxing fans here in Brazil. Boxing needs some excitement here again and, hopefully, I can live-up to everybody’s expectations.”

Oliveira, who won the UNBC title September 11, 2009, will make his defense in the 10-round main event against Dominican power-puncher Junior Ramos (10-5, 6 KOs). “I don’t know too much about him other than he fought for a WBC Latino title,” Oliveira said. “I have respect for him as a competitor and I will be ready for a good fight. If he can hit, I’ll feel him out a bit and then pressure him for a knockout, even if I take risks. I want a knock out for my fans but will settle for an impressive win by decision, if necessary.”

Brazil, of course, is famous for its beautiful women and soccer. Oliveira hopes to follow in the footsteps of Brazilian boxing icons, Hall of Famer Eder “Golden Bantam” Jofre and recent superstar Acelino “Popo” Freitas.

“I would love to see all of the beautiful Brazilian women we can seat that night,” Michael commented, “along with any soccer fans looking for an exciting alternative in sports. The Brazilian television networks show soccer 24 X 7. We need to convert a few million of these Brazilian soccer fans into boxing. We plan to start that process November 20th.

“It’s much too premature to compare me to Jofre and Freitas as great representatives of Brazilian boxing. With the team I have, including (head trainer) Danny Hawk who has guided me to 12-0 and Miguel Oliveira, a former Brazilian World Champion recently added to the mix, I can dream of being successful like they (Jofre and Freitas) were in their time.”

In the 12-round co-feature, South American and Brazilian Heavyweight Champion George Arias (46-11, 33 KOs), of Sao Paulo, defends his South American title belt against Argentinean rival Emilio Ezequiel “Chiquito” Zarate (10-2-1, 5 KOs). Also in action is light middleweight Edvan Dos Santos Barros (10-10-1, 7 KOs), who lives in Florida but was born in Salvador, Brazil, in a 6-round fight versus local Sao Paulo favorite Eraldo Cesar Pereira (6-1, 3 KOs).

Brazil’s top amateur boxers and Sao Paulo favorites, female heavyweight Roseli Feitosa and welterweight David Lourenco, are also slated to box in separate matches. Feitisa is the 2010 World Boxing Championships gold medalist, while Lourenco reigns as the 2010 Youth Olympic Games gold-medal winner.

Brighton’s Ben Murphy replaces Kevin O’Hara in the Matchroom Sports Prizefighter – Super Featherweights which takes place at York Hall in Bethnal Green, London on Saturday 20th November.

Murphy, who is the current Southern Area Lightweight Champion, joins a star studded lineup that includes; WBU/WBF Featherweight World Champion Choi Tseveenpurev, former WBU Featherweight World Champion Derry Matthews, British Super Featherweight Champion Gary Sykes, European Lightweight title challenger Gary Buckland, European Super Featherweight title challenger Scott Lawton, former Central Area Super Featherweight Champion, and now a regular on TV’s Coronation Street, Stephen Bell and Prizefighter – Lightweights semifinalist Gary McArthur.

Following a couple of sparring wars, with Featherweight George Jupp and Lightweight Ricky Boylan at the Ultrachem TKO Gym in Canning Town, Murphy, who is clearly in confident mood, simply said, “I’m gonna win the 32 grand.”

A grinning Brian Lawrence, Murphy’s manager and trainer, quickly added, “We’re glad that Matchroom have put us in the Prizefighter. What they’ve done is put the cat amongst the pigeons. Ben is a real handful, it’s going to be an exciting show and I think Ben has a very good chance of winning it.

I think in the Prizefighter you need a little bit of luck, because it’s only three rounders. But he’s raring to go.”

When asked has the late call-up affected the way Murphy is preparing for Prizefighter Lawrence replied, “I know the call came late, but we were training for it anyway. When the cut come they didn’t include us, but we kept ticking over though. When we got the call we were already ready.

As you’ll see on the night he’s in good shape and I don’t see any problem with the amount of time we had to train for it.

We’ve had quite a few sparring partners. Ricky Boylan, George Jupp and another kid called Tyler, I can’t remember his second name, but he’s quite a good kid. We’ve also been sparring with Lee Purdy, he’s the Southern Area Welterweight Champion and had loads of others as well. There’s always a lot of sparring around in London, there’s no problem with that. He’s ready to go.”

EA SPORTS MMA AND SHERDOG.COM EXCHANGE PROGRAM FIGHTERS TO MAKE STRIKEFORCE DEBUTS ON HENDERSON VS. BABALU UNDERCARD

NEW YORK (Nov. 10, 2010) – Three of the four upstart athletes who recently completed the EA SPORTS MMA and Sherdog.com fighter exchange training program by training with a STRIKEFORCE fighter mentor will put their newly enhanced Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) skills to the test on the undercard of STRIKEFORCE: Henderson vs. Babalu at Scottrade Center in St. Louis on Saturday, Dec. 4.

Fernando Bettega of Huntington Beach, Calif., trained with STRIKEFORCE World Middleweight (185 pounds) Champion Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza, Max “Payne” Martytniouk of Los Angeles by way of Russia, trained with former STRIKEFORCE World Light Heavyweight (205 pounds) Champion Gegard Mousasi, and Patrick Cummins of Reynolds, Penn. trained with STRIKEFORCE middleweight (185 pounds) superstar Jason “Mayhem” Miller as part of the program that brought to life the “career mode” in EA SPORTS MMA, which was released on Oct. 19.

The program, which sent each pair of STRIKEFORCE star and future star hopeful to several of the world’s leading MMA camps, kicked off immediately after the live, SHOWTIME®-televised STRIKEFORCE: Diaz vs. Noons II event on Oct. 9 and concluded at the end of last month.

“CraveOnline looked at the release of EA SPORTS MMA as an opportunity for our Sherdog personnel to open up this world to the masses,” stated John Keefer, Vice President of CraveOnline, the parent company of Sherdog.com. “The fighter exchange followed the format of the EA SPORTS MMA video game by taking four up-and-coming fighters and teaming them up with established fighters to get an immersion course on what it takes to be the best. The result is an exciting journey that will end in the ultimate test for these fighters at the STRIKEFORCE event.”

“EA SPORTS MMA celebrates the global nature of mixed martial arts and the fighter exchange program brought to life the worldwide journey found in the game for the four up-and-coming MMA fighters,” said Randy Chase, Senior Product Manager. “The EA SPORTS MMA team is very excited to see the four protégés get the opportunity to showcase their skills on the big stage of the Dec. 4 STRIKEFORCE event.”

Bettega (6-4), a 30-year-old member of the Chute Boxe MMA fight team, will square off with Wayne Phillips (4-3) of San Jose, Calif. at welterweight (170 pounds).

Phillips, a member of American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) in San Jose, earned a career-best, much-needed victory in his last start with a 4:27, first-round submission (armbar) over Eric Lawson on a STRIKEFORCE Challengers undercard last Feb. 26 in San Jose. The upset victory snapped a five-fight winning streak for Lawson.

Born in the former Soviet Union, Martyniouk (0-0) is, along with his brother Stan, being eyed as one of the potential future superstars of the sport. Martyniouk, a onetime amateur boxer who gravitated towards MMA over the course of his youth, will battle Justin Lawrence (0-0) of Pacific, Mo., at lightweight.

A two-time St. Louis Golden Gloves boxing tournament winner and six-time national amateur kickboxing champion, Lawrence’s start will mark his professional debut after compiling a perfect 5-0 record under amateur status.

Cummins is a 29-year-old former NCAA wrestling standout for Penn State University. He will face off with undefeated Terrell Brown (2-0) of O’ Fallon, Mo.

Brown, 27, turned pro with a second-round TKO (punches) over Luke Burton on June 26, 2010. The following Aug. 11, Brown won a unanimous decision over Vadiano La Cruz.

While paired with Souza, Bettega, a winner of two of his last three fights, visited El Nino Training Center, the San Francisco-based camp owned by STRIKEFORCE World Lightweight (155 pounds) Champion Gilbert “El Nino” Melendez, as well as Cesar Gracie’s camp in Pleasanton, Calif.; AKA; and Werdum Combat Team, the gym owned by STRIKEFORCE heavyweight superstar Fabricio Werdum.

Along with his mentor, Mousasi, Martyniouk trained during the EA SPORTSMMA program at STRIKEFORCE superstar Dan Henderson’s Team Quest in Temecula, Calif.; Elite MMA, the Westlake Village, Calif. gym owned by MMA legend Bas Rutten; and Gokor Chivichyan’s Team Hayastan in North Hollywood, Calif.

Together, Cummins and Miller ventured to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil gyms, including Nogueira, Gracie Barra, Nova Uniao, Gordo Jiu-Jitsu, Brazilian Top Team (BTT), Renovacao Fight Team (RFT), Nobre Arte and X-Gym.

In the Dec. 4 main event, MMA superstar Dan Henderson (25-8) of Temecula, Calif., will clash in a rematch with STRIKEFORCE light heavyweight world champion Renato “Babalu” Sobral (36-8) of Brazil at light heavyweight (205 pounds).

Paul “Semtex’’ Daley (25-9-2) of Nottingham, England, will make his STRIKEFORCE debut against power punching Scott “Hands Of Steel’ Smith (17-7, 1 NC) of Elk Grove, Calif., at welterweight (170 pounds).

Another knockout artist, “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler (17-6, 1 NC) of Granite City, Ill., will take on 2000 Olympic Games silver medalist Matt “The Law” Lindland (22-7) of Oregon City, Ore., in a middleweight (185 pounds) scrap; Antonio “Big Foot” Silva (14-2) will collide with Valentijn “The Python” Overeem (28-23), brother of STRIKEFORCE Heavyweight Champion Alistair “The Demolition Man” Overeem; and football legend and unbeaten MMA fighter, the remarkable Herschel Walker (1-0), will be opposed by Scott Carson (4-1).

Crowd favorite and St. Louis native, welterweight Jesse Finney, will take on a foe to be announced in the top non-televised undercard scrap.

Stevens, of the boxing hotbed of the Brownsville section of Brooklyn is one of the most feared punchers in the Super Middleweight division and has a record of 21-3 with fifteen knockouts.

Stevens started out his career as one of the most ballyhooed prospects in boxing as he racked up thirteen straight victories with eleven knockouts. After suffering a controversial stoppage defeat to veteran Marcos Primera, Stevens scored a eight round unanimous decision in the rematch that took place four months later.

After winning four consecutive bouts, Stevens dropped a ten round unanimous decision to former U.S. Olympian Andre Dirrell in a bout that was shown on HBO.

Stevens went on to win four consecutive bouts which included a three round pounding over then undefeated Piotr Wilczewski (22-0) in front of predominantly Polish crowd in Newark, New Jersey.

In Stevens last bout, he came out strong before dropping a twelve round unanimous decision to former member of the Contender Jesse Brinkley (34-5) in an IBF title elimination bout on January 29 in Brinkley’s hometown of Reno, Nevada.

Stevens currently ranked number five by the IBF.

Muriqi of New York via Kosovo has a record of 37-5 with twenty-three knockouts and will be back in the ring after a thirteen month layoff.

Muriqi won his first thirteen bouts before suffering a suffering controversial loss to Dan Sheehan on March 24, 2000.

Muriqi went on to win seventeen straight fights which included signature victories over Sam Ahmad (16-2-3) & Tony Menefee (77-19-1).

After a run where Muriqi went 4-2, he challenged former undisputed Light heavyweight champion Antonio Tarver.

Muriqi fought a valiant fight against the heavily favored Tarver only to fall short by a razor thin majority decision.

Muriqi has gone 3-1 since with his only defeat being a twelve round unanimous decision to former world champion Clinton Woods in Woods hometown in England.

Muriqi is on a two fight winning streak with his latest outing being a 2nd round stoppage over Tiwon Taylor on October 10, 2009 in Greensboro, North Carolina.

In eight round Light Heavyweight bout featuring Brooklyn undefeated Heavyweights, Will Rosinsky (12-0, 7 KO’s) will take on Yasin Rashid (7-0, 2 KO’s)

Joselito Collodo (11-0, 3 KO’s) will take part in a eight round Featherweight bout against an opponent to be named.

Undefeated Cruiserweight Stivins Bujac (2-0, 2 KO’s) of New York will fight a four round Cruiserweight bout against an opponent to be named.

Undefeated Light Heavyweight Seanie Monaghan (3-0, 2 KO’s) of Long Island, NY will take on Maurice Amaro (1-3) of Philadelphia

U.S. Army Captain, Boyd Melson of Brooklyn will make his pro debut against Andrew Jones (0-1-1) of Buffalo, NY in a four round Jr. Middleweight bout.

Popular Lightweight, Shemuel Pagan (1-0) of Brooklyn will battle Emil Brooks (0-1) of Buffalo in a four round bout.

In a four round Light Heavyweight bout, Joel Castillo (5-0, 3 KO’s) will see action in a four round Light Heavyweight bout

In a four round Featherweight bout, Allan Phalen will make his pro debut against Joshua Arocho (0-2) of Kissimmee, Florida.

There will be a press conference on Wednesday November 17th at 2pm at Portobello’s Pizzeria at 83 Murray Street between Greenwich and West Broadway in New York City
