Blood-feuding headliner for ‘Snow Brawl’ MMA show

Lauzon-Trites headline Dec. 2 at Twin River Event Center in RI

LINCOLN, R.I. (Nov. 10, 2010) – There’s bad blood brewing between the Dec. 2nd main event fighters, Dan “The Upgrade” Lauzon (13-4-0) and Damien “The Omen” Trites (5-3-0), on the “Snow Brawl” professional Mixed Martial Arts show, presented by Jimmy Burchfield’s CES MMA at the Twin River Event Center in Lincoln, R.I.

Trites claims the 22-year-old Lauzon, fighting out of Reality Self Defense, has disrespected him. Lauzon, the youngest UFC fighter ever, is the younger brother of UFC lightweight contender Joe Lauzon (18-5-0), who fights George Sotorupoulos on UFC 123 (Nov. 20 at Auburn Hills, Mich.).

“It’s a big fight because we don’t like each other,” Trites, representing Wai Kru in Boston, said. “There’s a lot of hating between us. This has been going on for six months to a year. This is going to be one of the biggest MMA fights in New England history. We’re going to sell out the place. I really hate him. At one point we were supposed to meet up in a parking lot to fight

“I respect him as a talent, no doubt about it, and I know I have to fight hard. He has a lot more experience than me and he’s had three UFC fights. But I don’t respect him as a person. He thinks he’s a gangster but he lives in East Bridgewater with his parents. I’ve been on my own since I was 16. He’s clueless.”

The feud started, according to Trites, when he went to train one night at Reality Self Defense, owned by Joe Lauzon, with his best friend, UFC fighter Josh “Doomsday” Howard. Trites trained with Joe Lauzon without incident but, as Trites explained, Dan Lauzon basically tried to hurt him.

“Joe was a true gentleman,” Trites remembered. “I like and respect Joe. We’d probably be friends if it wasn’t for his brother, who is the complete opposite of Joe. Dan tried to knock me out but I held my ground. Afterwards, I said I wouldn’t go back to their gym because you don’t train with somebody who is trying to knock you out. It would be like him coming to our gym and somebody there trying to knock him out.”

Trites said that after the initial incident he and Lauzon joked around when they met, but, deep down, they didn’t like each other from the start. Their animosity towards each other climaxed when Trites pulled out of a fight with Lauzon’s teammate, Joe Proctor.

“I had an ankle injury,” Damien added. “I pulled out of that fight but went to an Ultimate Fighter tryout. My injury was risky enough to stop me from fighting Proctor. He had only four fights, but I wasn’t going to pass up the Ultimate Fighter tryout. Lauzon went on my Facebook page, which is really for my friends and family – my mother goes on there a lot – and posted a message that I tried out for Ultimate Fighter and ducked his teammate. He said I was scared and that’s what really started it for us. You don’t go on somebody’s page and show disrespect. I’m not afraid of him or his friend and things escalated from there.

“We’re losing the mixed martial arts spirit — a lot of guys aren’t humble. Hey, he blew his UFC chance three times. He doesn’t respect me and he’s nothing but a bully. I’m going to stand right in front of him and go at it. If he thinks I’m afraid to fight him, he’ll find out December 2nd.”

Popular Providence lightweight Mike “The Beast” Campbell (8-3-0) plans to get back on the winning track against Detroit invader Tony “Lion Heart” Hervey (12-8-0) in the co-main event.

Rhode Island MMA pioneer Mat Santos (2-6-0), of East Greenwich, will be seeking revenge against BJJ specialist Everilton “Sonca” Silva (3-3-0), of Marlborough, MA), winner of a two-round, split decision against Santos four years ago.

Also fighting on the undercard are Connecticut featherweight Jason Bennett (4-3-0) versus Tateki Matsuda (4-3-0), out of Boston by way of Tokyo, and Brockton (MA) lightweight Lionel Young (4-4-0) taking on Luiz Rodriguez (3-0-0) of Somerville (MA). Pawtucket welterweight Rigo Dominicci (4-10-0) is scheduled to fight on the card against an opponent to be determined.

All bouts feature three, five-minute rounds. Undercard fights will soon be announced. All fights and fighters are subject to change.

Fans’ favourite Choi has posted a video on YouTube throwing the gauntlet down to the likes of British champion Gary Sykes, former England Commonwealth Games captain and Coronation Street actor Steve Bell with his unique take on some classic tracks.

AGELESS WONDER GLEN JOHNSON IMPRESSES SUPER SIX FIGHTERS WITH KO VICTORY OVER ALLAN GREEN

NEW YORK (Nov. 9, 2010) – Glen Johnson’s stunning eighth-round knockout victory over Allan Green Saturday night on SHOWTIME® not only earned him three points and the final spot in the Super Six World Boxing Classic Semifinals but the respect from the other entrants in the Super Six.

Although the scoring was close, the 41-year-old Jamaican-born Johnson (51-14-2, 35 KOs), of Miami, Fla., pushed the pace and consistently delivered the heavier shots throughout. Making his first start at 168 pounds in 10 years, Johnson finished Green (29-3, 20 KOs) of Tulsa, Okla., with a combination culminated by a vicious right hand 36 seconds into the round.

The final Group Stage 3 fight will transpire Saturday, Nov. 27, when former world champions Arthur Abraham (31-1, 25 KOs) of Germany and England’s Carl Froch (26-1, 20 KOs) clash for the vacant World Boxing Council (WBC) super middleweight title from Hartwall Areena in Helsinki, Finland, on SHOWTIME (same-day delay) in the opener of a televised doubleheader.

Undefeated World Boxing Association (WBA) 168-pound belt-holder Andre Ward (22-0, 13 KOs) of Oakland, Calif., will defend against dangerous Sakio Bika (28-4-2, 19 KOs) of Sydney, Australia, by way of Cameroon, Africa, live on SHOWTIME in the second half of the eagerly awaited Nov. 27 twinbill. “I think Glen Johnson put on a good show and did what he had to do in his fight with Allan Green,’’ Ward said. “I wasn’t shocked by the outcome. I anticipated something like that happening. With the type of fight they had and they pace they fought at, it was hard to tell what impact fighting at 168 had on Glen.

“With that said, he did what he needed to do on Saturday night and I take my hat off to him.”

Abraham, who is tied with Johnson with three points, also commended Johnson on his outstanding accomplishment.

“I was impressed by Glen Johnson,’’ Abraham said. “You could see what experience and
class can do inside the ring. It is very remarkable that at the age of 41 he knocks out a young man like Green.

“That was a strong performance.’’

Froch offered high praise for Johnson and SHOWTIME, while providing some free advice to Green.

“The win over Allan Green was a good one and the old fella looked game and determined,’’ Froch said. “He made the weight comfortably and seemed happier at 168 pounds.

“I think Johnson brings a different dimension to the Super Six as a fighter. One thing this tournament has shown is how we’re all very different in our approach. We’re all very unique in that sense. I like people who come to fight and therefore I’m all in favor of Johnson’s inclusion. Ken Hershman has done well to bring ‘The Road Warrior’ in at such short notice.

“With regards to Green, unfortunately, it’s not really worked out for him at all. Maybe he needs to consider a move up in weight to recapture some of his old magic. He is tall and I’ve often read of his battles with the scales and I think that will be his only way forward now. He’s shown in the past he can put it together, but something has been lacking during this tournament for him and maybe light heavyweight is the answer.”

The Metropolitan Championships also known as The Metros or The New York City Championships will be at Gleason’s Gym this Friday Night November 12, 2010, at 8:00 PM.

Both quarterfinal and semifinal bouts will be contested.

The Gym will close at 6:00 PM Friday night for working out.

The weigh-in begins at 6:00 PM for the boxers.

Two rings will be used at the same time.

All Star Classic: Sanders, Robles get the nod at 125

A pair of two-time 125-pound All-Americans finalize the main event lineup at the 2010 NWCA All-Star Classic Presented by the Marines.

Minnesota junior Zach Sanders and Arizona State senior Anthony Robles will reacquaint themselves with one another on November 21 at Selland Arena in Fresno, Calif.

Robles, a Mesa, Ariz., native is one of the best stories in all sports. He came on the scene as a high school senior, winning the high school nationals at 112 pounds. His win wasn’t the remarkable thing, but born without a right leg, Robles excelled in a sport where it’s tough enough for wrestlers with both of their lower extremities.

Robles, a fan favorite nearly every place he competes, has placed twice at the NCAA Division I championships and most wrestling fans love to watch his style of wrestling.

Sanders, a five-time high school state champion from tiny Wabasha, Minn., is one of the most active wrestlers in the country at the weight. The two will each be the second representatives of their programs in the 45th annual wrestling event.

Sanders joins teammate Sonny Yohn, wrestling at 197 pounds, while Robles joins teammate Bubba Jenkins, who is wrestling at 157 pounds.

Robles went 32-4 last season en route to a seventh-place finish at the 2010 NCAA Division I Championships. Sanders went 29-7 and finished fifth. The two did not meet last season, but split matches in 2009.

Sanders beat Robles at the Cliff Keen/Las Vegas Invitational in December of 2008, while Robles earned a 19-10 victory in the consolation semifinals in the 2009 NCAA Division I Championships.

Robles’ inclusion pushes the total numbers of Pac-10 Conference wrestlers to six, with Jenkins, Boise State’s Andrew Hochstrasser, Adam Hall, Kirk Smith and Stanford’s Nick Amuchastegui also competing.

By contrast, Minnesota’s pair comprises two-thirds of the Big Ten entries. Illinois’ Jordan Blanton is the only other Big Ten wrestler competing in the 2010 event.

The 45th Annual NWCA All-Star Classic Presented by The Marines will be held at the Selland Arena in Fresno, California on Sunday, November 21, 2010. Bermondsey’s Marianne Marston Looks To Follow In David Haye’s Footsteps

As Bermondsey, South London’s most famous boxing son David ‘Hayemaker’ Haye enters the final stages of his preparations to defend his WBA Heavyweight World title against former Olympic Gold medalist Audley Harrison, in Manchester on the 13th November, another Bermondsey resident, Marianne ‘Golden Girl’ Marston, prepares to begin her journey as a professional boxer with World Championship aspirations, a little closer to home at York Hall in Bethnal Green, East London, just a few weeks later on the 4th December.

Whilst we all know David’s story – excellent amateur career, as a professional only lost one fight in 25 outings, secured the European, WBC, WBA and WBO Cruiserweight titles and then after only his second fight at the weight lifted the WBA World Heavyweight title after beating Nikolay Valuev – Marianne’s is just as impressive, albeit in a very different way.

Marianne’s story is far more international than local. She was discovered and mentored by legendary Heavyweight Champion of the World Smokin’ Joe Frazier, who went on record stating Marianne will be World Champion, and was very much part of Cruiserweight Champion of the World Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham’s Philadelphia based team before returning to London where she is now managed by Johnny Eames and trained by Derek Grainger at their Ultrachem TKO Gym team in Canning Town.

Marianne explained how she came to be trained in America in the first place, “It was while I was on a business trip, I accidentally met Joe Frazier at a coffee shop in Philadelphia. I didn’t even realise it was him at the time.

The only spare places were at my table and Joe asked if it was OK to sit there. We got talking and the conversation got onto boxing and I told him I had been training a bit. He asked me to show him my shadow boxing, so I did. He then told me who he was and gave me a card, which I still have and treasure, and then said to come and try out at his gym.

I was so nervous, I mean this is the man that beat Ali and was World Champion. I mean he’s a legend. Anyway I did, he liked me and asked me to join his team.

Unfortunately Joe had to close the gym in 2008 so I moved my training to The James Shuler Memorial Gym in West Philadelphia.

After I had been training there a couple of months Steve and Livvy (Cunningham) invited me to be part of their team. I really loved my time at Shulers, that place is a true fight factory. I would be training alongside Steve, Eddie (‘Fast’ Eddie Chambers), Yusuf (Mack) and many other champions. It was awesome.”

Her clear ability earned her the kudos of being offered an unprecedented twelve fight contract by American promoter Ivan Cohen. Her American debut was due to be in May last year against former American sparring partner Christina Leadbeater. Unfortunately that was not to be as when her required visa was turned down by the American Embassy in London.

“It was like being stabbed through the heart” Marianne said of the Embassy refusing her visa. “They said that Women’s boxing is not a professional sport. It’s crazy I had all the right paperwork and a twelve fight contract in my hand yet they wouldn’t take me seriously. It had been OK for me to train in America, have a home in America but they wouldn’t let me box professionally in America.

Ivan (Cohen) went berserk hearing that, so did the Philadelphia press who campaigned for me to be allowed to fight there.”

Not being one to give up on her dream Marianne initially went to a local gym at London Bridge before moving to the Ultrachem TKO Gym in Canning Town where she impressed Johnny Eames, whose disapproval of Women’s boxing is legendary, and became the first female boxer signed to his highly successful boxing stable.

“It’s an honour to be part of the Ultrachem TKO team. TKO is just like Shulers it’s a true pro boxing gym, it really is the best boxing gym in Europe.” Marianne said of her UK training base. “Shulers has some of America’s best coaches and fighters, TKO has many of the UK’s best. It even feels like Shulers at times, I feel really at home there. I mean they are great coaches and I train alongside some world class British fighters.

On only my second day at TKO I was shadow boxing in one of the rings and Kevin Mitchell climbed in and shadow boxed alongside me. I stopped at one point as I had spotted a move he had made out of the corner of my eye.

During the break I mentioned it to him and he showed me exactly what the move was. He was preparing for his fight with Michael Katsides at the time yet he took the time to help me. Now that’s class. That’s TKO.

Derek (Grainger) was a great boxer and is an top class coach. But it’s not just Derek when you’re a TKO fighter. If Derek can’t make it in for any reason I am coached by Johnny (Eames) or Alec (Wilkey) and Brian (Lawrence), Jimmy (Tibbs) and Mark (Tibbs) often watch the sparring and give advice, as do some of the fighters. It really is a family, everyone cares about every fighter and will help when they can.”

Marianne’s British debut will be against the very tough Lana Cooper from Wales, as such Johnny Eames arranged quality sparring with the highly experienced Welterweight Angel ‘The Artist’ McKenzie and the UK’s number one Lightweight Laura Saperstein, who have both fought Lana Cooper, as well as Olympian Ruth Raper and unbeaten Bantamweight Laura Norton to ensure she will be fight ready.

“There’s nothing like good sparring to get ready for a fight and Johnny and Derek have got me the best.” Marianne said, “I’ve sparred with Angel a lot and also previously sparred Ruth but have yet to spar either Laura and am looking forward to our sessions over the coming weeks.

With the world class training and sparring I will be 100% ready for Lana. We’re both pressure fighters so I expect it to be a real tear up. I’ll enjoy that, I’m ready for that.”

We couldn’t let Marianne go without first asking who she expects to win the upcoming David ‘Hayemaker’ Haye versus Audley ‘A Force’ Harrison fight. “I was there, right in the front row, when Audley knocked out Michael Sprott for the European title.” Marianne said before continuing, “It was a wicked left, lethal. but that’s about all he did all fight, Michael was less than two minutes from winning by a clear margin.

I think David is by far the more complete boxer. Against Valuev he stayed out of range, attacked at pace and got out before Valuev could let rip with any big shots. I think he’ll do the same with Audley. Definitely David Haye will still be the champ at the end of the night.”

Marianne ‘Golden Girl’ Marston versus Lana Cooper will be supporting Yassine El Maachi defense of his International Masters Light Middleweight title, against Jimmy Colas at the Steve Goodwin promoted “Judgement Day” double title event at York Hall, Bethnal Green, London on Saturday the 4th December 2010.
