For Manny Pacquiao and Antonio Margarito, the stakes are extremely high going into their Saturday contest for the vacant WBC super-welterweight championship. Pacquiao is aiming for a record world title in eight different weight classes while keeping the pressure on Floyd Mayweather Jr. for a superfight in 2011. While Pacquiao has millions of reasons to need an impressive victory, it is plausible that Margarito needs it just a little bit more. Margarito had finally become a breakout superstar when he was found to have illegal substances in his handwraps before a bout with Shane Mosley. Not only was he soundly defeated by Mosley and suspended for 15 months, his prior accomplishments have been tarnished almost beyond repair. If he can derail the impressive Pac-man, he can restore some of the shine to his sullied reputation. When they meet in Dallas, who will come out on top?

Margarito:
A tall, lanky fighter with long arms and power in both hands, Margarito fights aggressively, usually starting slow and finding the range for his straight right hand and left hook, thrown effectively to the body and head. Not afraid to take a punch, Margarito will stand directly in front of his opponents, using his superior strength to put them on the defensive. Once the action starts heating up, he fights like his moniker of “The Tijuana Tornado”.

STRENGTHS

Pacquiao:
* Unorthodox Style – Pacquiao is very unorthodox, even for a southpaw. He moves straight in but is hard to time with his bobbing and head feints. Before most opponents can time his onrushes, he is throwing whirlwind punches from a variety of angles.

* Speed – Pacquiao is quick and agile and his hands are deceptively fast. He throws rapid one-two combinations or multiple left hands and will force opponents on the defensive.

* Stamina – Pacquiao fights just as hard in the last round as he does in the beginning. He applies a lot of pressure and is constantly punching, wearing opponents down in the process.

Margarito:
* Aggressive Pressure – Margarito is a straight-forward pressure fighter who will frequently turn bouts into wars of attrition and slowly break his opponents mentally and physically.

* Chin – In bouts against respected punchers like Miguel Cotto, Kermit Cintron, Paul Williams, and Joshua Clottey, Margarito has stood toe-to-toe and taken their best offerings without blinking. Even his loss to Mosley, Margarito was able to withstand inordinate amount of punishment before finally getting stopped.

* Killer Instinct – Once an opponent is hurt, Margarito swarms power punches like a shark swarms to blood, attacking with an assortment of punches until his adversary is no longer standing.

WEAKNESSES

Pacquiao:
* Trouble with Boxers – Pacquiao is at his best when in against opponents who stand in front of him and try to trade as he usually overwhelms them. But he has had difficulties against good boxers, especially Juan Manuel Marquez, who was able to clearly outbox Pacquiao for extended periods in their two encounters.

* Cuts – Pacquiao has contended with cuts and scar tissue throughout his career. He was cut badly by headbutts in his fight with Agapito Sanchez and also in his first fight with Erik Morales. His fragile skin is always a potential liability.

* Distractions – Pacquiao is a popular celebrity in his native Philippines, involved in the country’s political agenda. His star is burning brightly and there is also the constant talk about a potential mega-fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. All of this looms every time Pacquiao steps in the ring.

Margarito:
* Slow Feet – Margarito is a very methodical, plodding boxer who is notoriously slow-footed. Cotto who possesses average speed was able to outmaneuver Margarito for stretches and Mosley made him look like he had lead feet.

* Easy to Hit – Margarito certainly focuses more on offense but that leaves him open to be hit especially over the top of his long arms. He is very willing to take punches to land his own.

* Reputation – Ever since the scandal over his handwraps going into the Mosley fight, Margarito has had his reputation severely tarnished. Trying to redeem himself could prove to be a bigger obstacle than Manny Pacquiao.

PREVIOUS BOUT

Pacquiao:
(03-13-10) Scored a comprehensive but ultimately forgettable 12-round unanimous decision over Joshua Clottey. While Pacquiao dominated the action, Clottey fought passively and seemed content to avoid danger.

Margarito:
(05-08-10) In his first bout coming back from his suspension, Margarito won a lackluster 10-round unanimous decision over Roberto Garcia. While he won nearly every round, he didn’t come close to scoring a stoppage, raising additional questions about his lack of punching power without loaded wraps.

3 BEST PERFORMANCES

Pacquiao:
* Oscar De la Hoya (12/06/08) – Pacquiao stole the show from “The Golden Boy.” 90% of polled experts had picked De la Hoya to win in a landslide. It was a landslide but it was Pacquiao dishing out the beating, ripping De la Hoya apart with both hands. After eight one-sided and brutal rounds, a swollen and bloodied De la Hoya was beaten into permanent retirement.

* Miguel Cotto (11/14/09) – Pacquiao impressively dismantled the larger and physically imposing Cotto. Pacquiao dropped the Puerto Rican superstar twice early and from the 6th round on, had him in a defensive shell, battering him until the referee stopped the bout in the 12th round.

* Ricky Hatton (05/02/09) – Pacquio ran through Hatton in fast and destructive fashion. Hatton, while still an underdog, was expected to provide a challenge with his strength and mauling tactics. Pacquiao unveiled an improved right hook and had Hatton down twice in the 1st round before crushing him with a devastating knockout in the 2nd.

Margarito:
* Miguel Cotto (7-26-08) – Margarito cemented his star status by hammering the undefeated Cotto into defeat. Cotto boxed well early and built a solid lead. But Margarito walked through Cotto’s best punches and gradually wore him down; dropping him twice in the 11th round before the bout was halted.

* Kermit Cintron (4-12-08) – This was a rematch to Margarito’s dominant victory over Cintron three years prior. Many thought the roles would be reversed as Cintron had improved tremendously under the tutelage of Emmanuel Steward. None of that mattered in the ring as Margarito relentlessly pounded Cintron with right hands, finally deflating him for the count with a vicious body shot in the 6th round.

* Golden Johnson (11-10-07) – Coming off a decision loss to Paul Williams, it was wondered if Margarito was on the downslide. Margarito promised to start faster and he made good on that statement, attacking Johnson early and driving him to the canvas three times for a 1st round stoppage victory.

QUESTIONS

Pacquiao:

* Is he looking toward a lucrative fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr.?

* Will he become discouraged if he can’t hurt Margarito?

* Will his recent successes leave him overconfident?

Margarito:

* Can he keep up with Pacquiao’s speed?

* Does he truly believe in himself anymore?

* Can a win or an impressive showing fully restore his reputation?

PENECALE PREDICTION

Margarito is traditionally a slow starter and Pacquiao will come out quickly, probing with his jab to the head and body, while using his superior foot speed to continually move on angles. Margarito will plod ahead trying to set his feet and keep pace with the faster man. Pacquiao will continue to move forward but will show respect for Margarito’s strength and punching power, winning an uneventful opening round.

Pacquiao will take advantage of his superior speed in the 2nd round and use his right hook overtop of Margarito’s lead hand and set him up to land straight lefts right down the middle. Pacquiao’s speed with allow him to three or four punches to every one of Margarito’s one.

Margarito will increase his straight-forward pressure in the 3rd and 4th rounds, hoping to wear down the smaller Pacquiao. While he will have brief pockets of success, the advantage will still be in Pacquiao’s hands as he continues to hammer Margarito’s anvil chin with right hooks, left uppercuts, and other punches from a variety of angles.

While his iron chin will keep him on his feet, Margarito will continue to take punishment and, by the mid rounds, his face will start to show the effects with bruising and swelling around both eyes and blood from the mouth.

Pacquiao is a tremendous finisher and once he senses blood, he attacks like a shark. He will be outpunching Margarito and landing 50+% of his power shots, increasing the damage to the bigger man’s face. Referee Laurence Cole will confer with the doctor in the 8th round and alert the Margarito camp that he will stop the fight if he continues to take more punishment.

Pacquiao will have Margarito in full retreat mode, connecting with relentless power punches, snapping his head back, but unable to put him on the canvas. After another combination lands cleanly, Cole will step in and save Margarito from any further punishment. The winner by TKO at 2:29 of the 10th round is MANNY PACQUIAO!!!

‘Master’ replaces Teixeira;Wallace joins MFC 27 lineup for fight with Heath

Due to ongoing issues regarding his travel visa from Brazil, Glover Teixeira has been deleted from the MFC 27: Breaking Point card and replaced by Rodney “Sho Nuff the Master” Wallace for a light heavyweight showdown with David Heath.

Wallace (9-3) will take on Heath (16-6) in one of the night’s featured bouts broadcast live on HDNet Fights. The event takes place Friday, Nov. 12 at the River Cree Resort and Casino, just outside Edmonton, Alberta.

“Our entire organization is extremely disappointed that Mr. Teixeira’s camp could not get these travel issues sorted out particularly since the fight against David Heath had been agreed upon several weeks ago. In fact it was one of the very first fights booked for MFC 27,” said Mark Pavelich, Owner/President of the Maximum Fighting Championship.

“I am excited that a tough competitor like Rodney Wallace has stepped in to take the fight, and I would also very much like to give full credit to David Heath for accepting the opponent change without one bit of hesitation. He is very much a ‘company guy’ and a true fighter. That’s why we appreciate him and that’s why the MFC fans appreciate him so much.”

Wallace, a 28-year-old native of Charlotte, North Carolina, holds career victories over notables Antwain Britt and Ovince St. Preux. He has registered two wins via submission and one by knockout. Before beginning his MMA career, Wallace was a standout collegiate running back, winding up his career at Catawba College as the Division II school’s all-time leading rusher.

Heath will be riding a three-fight winning streak coming into the encounter, including his Superman punch knockout of Solomon Hutcherson at MFC 26 this past September. The Tulsa, Oklahoma, product has eyes on contending for a title shot in both the MFC light heavyweight and middleweight divisions.

MAKE ROOM FOR MUSA: With Nate Jolly sidetracked due to an injury, Musa Tolliver will slide into his spot in the scheduled featherweight bout with Brad Cardinal – a fight that will wrap up the three-bout undercard at MFC 27. Tolliver (8-6-1) has rattled off seven straight victories including a recent victory over Jason MacKay.

Scott Carson Rips Into ‘Keyboard Warriors’
And Vows ‘To Shut Them Up’

NEW YORK (Nov. 8, 2010) – STRIKEFORCE formally announced that legendary football superstar and unbeaten MMA fighter, Herschel Walker (1-0), of Wrightsville, Ga., will be opposed by Scott Carson (4-1), of Lake Forest, Calif., in a featured heavyweight matchup on Saturday, Dec. 4, at Scottrade Center in St. Louis, live on SHOWTIME® (10 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast).

The 6-foot-1 inch Walker, the 1982 Heisman Trophy winner and a 1999 College Hall of Fame inductee, holds a fifth degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do and boasts additional training in the combat disciplines of Muay Thai and Kenpo. He has been honing his MMA skills at world-renowned American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) in San Jose, Calif., under head trainers Bob Cook and Javier Mendez.

The remarkable Walker, 48, will be making his first start since winning his pro debut with a unanimous three-round decision over Greg Nagy on Jan. 30, 2010, at STRIKEFORCE: Miami on SHOWTIME.

So, who is Scott Carson?

“I’ll tell you one thing. I’m a lot better fighter than the one I’ve been reading about on the Internet,’’ Carson said. “This is a huge deal for me, a tremendous opportunity, but you’d think I was nothing going off what has been written by some of these keyboard warriors, who I doubt have ever stepped in a cage. It’s a lot easier to sit in front of a computer and talk (stuff) than it is to actually fight.

“I am trying to take it all in stride, but I have no idea why some people are talking so negatively without ever having seen me. They don’t know me. I’m pretty well-rounded with good standup and wrestling.

“They say I’m old at 40 but I don’t feel 40 and I certainly don’t look 40. I think I look 30 and I’m in great shape. I’m ripped, just like Herschel.

“I’m going to be more ready for Dec. 4 than I have been for any other fight. I plan to shut up all the critics, each and every one of them. Let them write something factual after they’ve seen me on Dec. 4.

“I’m really excited about fighting a great athlete like Herschel. I’m training every day. But the fact that some people aren’t giving me a chance is only giving me extra motivation. This is going to be a great fight.’’

The 6-foot-2-inch Carson turned pro in September 1999 and won his initial four starts through June 2001. He is a former WEC veteran who scored a first-round submission victory over Bryson Haubrick at the very first WEC event.

After being sidelined with a back injury and due to several scheduled fights falling out, Carson didn’t return to the cage until last June 12 in Los Angeles. A member of Reign Training Center in Lake Forest, he got knocked out in the first round by undefeated Lorenz Martin (3-0 going in, 5-0 now).

“I was out a long time because of my back and I did rehab for a while,’’ said Carson, who trained for years with Chuck Liddell before he joined Reign Training Center in Lake Forest. “I never thought much about not fighting again; I always wanted to come back.

“But I couldn’t do anything until I was 100 percent. Once I got healthy again, I got better the more I trained. I’ve helped a lot of guys get ready for fights while waiting for my chance. I had a few fights lined up before my last fight, but they all fell out for one reason or another.’’

The comebacking Carson makes no excuses for his last start, his first in nine years.

“It got to the point for the longest time that all I did was train,’’ he said. “Then, the next thing we know, I’m fighting. I felt good going into that fight but just got caught. It can happen to anybody.’’

In the main event of a stacked card on STRIKEFORCEC’s return to Scottrade Center, MMA superstar Dan Henderson (25-8) of Temecula, Calif., faces former STRIKEFORCE light heavyweight world champion Renato “Babalu” Sobral (36-8) of Brazil in a collision of world-class 205-pounders.

Remillard (22-0, 13 KOs), who lives in nearby Manchester (CT), is rated No. 5 by the WBO, as well as No. 6 by the WBC and WBA. The talented 24-year-old will be fighting close to home once again (7-0, 5 KOs at Mohegan Sun) against Cuauhtemoc Vargas (15-4-1, 10 KOs) in the 10-round co-feature.

“It’s always fun for me to fight at Mohegan Sun,” Remillard said. “It’s a beautiful place and I’m looking forward to fighting there again in front of my family, friends and fans. Spadafora was one of the fighters I loved watching when I was coming up. I like his style. I really respect promoter Mike Acri for putting me on his card. He had to wait for me to get approved to fight. A lot of other promoters wouldn’t have waited but he kept his word.

“I’m also looking forward to fighting on the same card as Danny O’Connor. We’ve sparred together a few times and Danny’s style is exactly like Spadafora’s. My stable-mates, Chip (Perez) and Addy (Irrizarry) are fighting on this card, too. I need to win and win impressively to close the show (year) in style and get closer to where I want to get – world title shot. I want to close out the year with a bang.”

O’Connor (13-0, 3 KOs), an undefeated junior welterweight from Framingham (MA), was supposed to fight Nov. 19 in his hometown, but the show was cancelled and the popular Irish-American landed on the Spadafora-Ponce card. He is matched against his original opponent, Humberto Tapia (15-15-1, 8 KOs), in an 8-round bout.

Hometown favorite, welterweight Addy Irizarry (8-4, 2 KOs), faces her stiffest test against IFBA Welterweight Champion and former U.S. Amateur Boxer of the Year, Jill Emery (9-4, 3 KOs), in a 6-round, non-title fight. Irizarry, a correctional officer from Hartford, has won her last two fights.

Boston super middleweight and former amateur standout, Mark “The Italian Bazooka” DeLuca (7-0, 5 KOs), puts his unbeaten record on the line against an opponent to be determined in a 6/8 round match.

Also fighting on the undercard in 4-rounders are Fall River (MA) junior middleweight Dustin Reinhold (3-1, 2 KOs) vs. TBA, undefeated Hartford lightweight Joseph “Chip Perez (4-0, 1 KO) vs. Ronnie Peterson (3-4, 1 NC, 3 KOs), Worcester (MA) heavyweight Keith Bianchini (1-0, 0 KOs) vs. Antonio Robertson (0-2), and Youngstown (OH) lightweight prospect Chris Hazimihalis (3-0, 3 K)s) vs. TBA.

Light Welterweight Ben ‘The Entertainer’ Day has joined forces with boxing coach Scott Borthwick to create an all new boutique style boxing and fitness gym right in the heart of London.

The gym, which they named RingTone Health and Fitness, is located in Drummond Street, London NW1 close to Euston Station and Regents Park and is fully fitted with a sixteen foot boxing ring and full selection of heavy, uppercut and reflex bags. In addition to the boxing specific equipment there is a full compliment of fitness machines and free weights as well as the revolutionary new TRX resistance training system.

On the opening of the new gym Ben, who personally coaches Razorlight’s front man Johnny Borrell, said, “It’s an exciting time for us, both Scott and I have worked as personal trainers and boxing coaches for a few years now and to actually open our own gym is a dream come true.

We believe that training should be fun, so anyone that comes to RingTone to get fit will find we are quite laid back, mind you don’t think that means we go easy on people in training, we don’t.”

Joining Ben and Scott as house coaches are Ben Doughty and female professional boxer Marianne Marston, who also holds one of her industry leading ‘Golden Girl’ Women’s Boxing Classes at RingTone on Wednesday evening.

RingTone is also home to the all new UltraMitts System speed mitts training system developed by Ben and his good friend Welterweight Karol Ozimkowski.

UltraMitts training programme was developed to compliment conventional boxing coaching regimens. By regularly including UltraMitts sessions, as part of a boxers training programme, enables coaches to commit combinations and routines to the memory of his boxers at a faster pace than when just using conventional pad work.

UltraMitts also helps in the development of radar ability, for blocking and parrying of shots at high speed from all angles. In addition the use of the UltraMitts system also noticeably increases hand speed, balance and ring movement due to the super fast pace of UltraMitts.
