Edwin “La Bomba” Rodriguez set to explode Friday night vs. McGirt in ShoBox main event

WORCESTER, Mass. (Nov. 2, 2010) – When unbeaten prospect Edwin “La Bomba” Rodriguez steps into the ring Friday night to fight James McGirt for the vacant WBC USNBC super middleweight title on ShoBox: The New Generation, the dangerous Dominican boxer will be fighting for his most significant victory as a professional, as well as a major step forward towards a top 15 rating in one of the major boxing organizations.

The DiBella Entertainment-promoted show in Fargo, North Dakota, headlined by Rodriguez-McGirt, will air on SHOWTIME starting at 11 ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).

“It’s special because the fight is on Showtime and everybody will be watching,” Rodriguez spoke about his first main event on a national network. “It’s a good feeling being in the main event on Showtime. I always want to be impressive, but I’m in the main event this time, so I need to take it to the next level.

“It’s hard not to think about where a win could put me, but I have McGirt in front of me and he’s a good fighter. You can’t look ahead in boxing and I’m not. I take ‘em one fight at a time. I don’t really care about rankings but I do know it can get me closer to where I want to be and that’s winning a world title.”

Rodriguez (16-0, 12 KOs), fighting out of Worcester (MA), prepped for Friday evening’s showdown sparring two weeks in Australia with middleweight Danny Geale (23-1, 14 KOs), who knocked out former IBF middleweight champion Roman Karmazin in the 12th round of their IBF eliminator fight last Sunday night. Rodriguez also regularly sparred Down Under with lefthander Jamie “Mr. Business” Pittman (19-2, 8 KOs), 2004 Australian Olympian, to prepare for the southpaw McGirt.

“I basically had world-class sparring every day for two weeks,” Rodriguez said. “Everything about it was great. It was their camp and we got up to run, then went to the gym to work-out, and then we sparred in the afternoon. It was a great feeling (going away to train for the first time), no worries, and I improved my skills. I didn’t stay in a hotel room by myself. I stayed with a family that had no ties to boxing. They were really good to me. When I wasn’t training, they took me to see the opera house, harbor-bridge and other places of interest. All-around Australia was a good time.”

McGirt (22-2-1, 11 KOs), trained by his father, 2-time world champion and former Trainer of the Year, James “Buddy” McGirt, has defeated Raymond Joval, Jason Naugler and Stephan Pryor.

Rodriguez, who is promoted by DiBella Entertainment, and McGirt have fought two common opponents, Brad Austin and Marcus Upshaw. Rodriguez knocked-out Austin in the third round and won each round (6) for a unanimous decision versus Upshaw; McGirt easily won an 8-round decision (80-70, 79-71, 79-71) against Austin but fought to a 10-round draw with Upshaw (94-94, 94-94, 93-95).

Representing a new breed of super middleweights, the 25-year-old Rodriguez is rated No. 4 by the NABF and NABO, while McGirt ranks No. 7 and No. 11, respectively.

“McGirt was a top 10 contender who has good boxing skills,” Edwin noted. “He has a good jab and good body attack. He’s been great in some fights, not so great in others. I need to win to get to the next level in this division.”

Born in the Dominican Republic, Edwin started boxing in 2001 and he developed into one of the top amateurs in the United States, compiling a solid 84-9 record, including gold-medal performances in the 2005 USA Boxing National Championships and 2006 U.S. National Golden Gloves Tournament. He became the first Massachusetts boxer to win the middleweight title at The Nationals since “Marvelous” Marvin Hagler in 1973.

Rodriguez has been using vicious body attacks to damage his most recent opponents. “I’ve always liked throwing body shots,” he explained, “I just didn’t focus on body punching as much as I do now. I used to throw to the body to set-up head shots. It’s different now – I throw head shots to set-up the body. I love the way they fall when I stop them with a body shot.”

Ice Promotions officials announced today that Jennifer “The Bolivian Queen” Salinas will not be fighting on Saturday’s card. The Manassas, VA featherweight informed the promotion yesterday that she will challenge champion Jackie “The Aztec Princess” Nava for the World Boxing Council’s (WBC) interim super bantamweight title on Saturday, Nov. 6 in Yucatan, Mexico.

All Star Classic: Pac-10 on display at 157 with Hall, Jenkins

Boise State finds its program again in the spotlight with the release of the 157-pound weight class for the 2010 NWCA All-Star Classic Presented by The Marines.

Top-ranked Adam Hall will be the third Bronco wrestler in the event. He’ll have Pac-10 foe Bubba Jenkins of Arizona State in the November 21 event at Selland Arena in Fresno, Calif.

While the two are both in the Pac-10, it’ll be the first collegiate meeting between the pair of 2005 High School National Champions and USA Wrestling Junior Freestyle All-Americans.

Hall, from Bonners Ferry, Idaho, was third in last year’s NCAA Division I Championships at 157 pounds, while Jenkins was a 2008 NCAA runner-up at 149 pounds when he was wrestling at Penn State.

Jenkins, from Virginia Beach, Va., was out of action last year and transferred in the offseason to ASU. He’s moved up to 157 and comes into the event ranked fourth by W.I.N. Magazine.

Last season, Hall went 33-3 following up on his sophomore campaign where he went 35-6. A three-time NCAA qualifier and is the 2010 Pac-10 champion.

Jenkins saw limited action last season in opens at Penn State and will return to 157 pounds, where he qualified for the NCAA championships as a freshman. He will be the 25th Sun Devil to compete in the event and the first since Pat Pitsch wrestled at 165 in 2007.

With Jenkins now at Arizona State, this could be the first of several meetings this season between the pair.

Hall and his Boise State brethren make up three wrestlers in the event, joining Oklahoma State as the only team with three competing in this year’s classic. Prior to this year’s event, Boise State had five total wrestlers compete in the 44 previous events.

The 45th Annual NWCA All-Star Classic Presented by The Marines will be held at the Selland Arena in Fresno, California on Sunday, November 21, 2010. Boise State’s Adam Hall makes 3 for the Classic

BOISE, Idaho – The National Wrestling Coaches Association announced, Tuesday (Oct. 2), that Boise State will be represented by three wrestlers at the 2010 NWCA All-Star Classic in Fresno, Calif. as Adam Hall has been named to the line-up at 157 pounds.

Hall joins fellow Broncos Kirk Smith (184 pounds) and Andrew Hochstrasser (133), who were invited to the prestigious event at the end of October. The All-Star Classic, presented by The Marines, is scheduled for Nov. 21 (Sunday) at the Selland Arena.

Hall, a redshirt senior from Bonners Ferry, Idaho (Bonners Ferry HS), will face Bubba Jenkins of Arizona State at the All-Star Classic. Hall enters the season ranked No. 1 nationally at 157 pounds by Wrestling Insider Newsmagazine, while Jenkins is currently fourth. This will mark the first ever meeting between the two wrestlers.

Hall is coming off an outstanding junior campaign for the Broncos in which he wrestled to All-American honors with a third-place finish at the NCAA tournament. He also captured his first Pac-10 Conference championship. Hall finished 2009-10 with a 33-3 overall record and is 68-8 over the past two seasons.

Jenkins enters his first season at Arizona State after transferring from Penn State during this past offseason. He was a 2008 NCAA runner-up at 149 pounds, but did not compete for the Nittany Lions last season.

With Hall’s invitation to the event, Boise State joins Oklahoma State as the only teams with three wrestlers competing in this year’s classic. Prior to this year Boise State had just five total wrestlers compete in the previous 44 All-Star Classics.

All-Star Classic: Yohn, Foster set for shoot out in California at 197

Wrestling fans in the West will get two chances to see Colorado and Idaho mix it up on the college wrestling mats. They’ll do so watching wrestlers representing schools from Minnesota and Oklahoma.

Minnesota’s Sonny Yohn and Oklahoma State’s Clayton Foster have been selected to compete against one another at 197 pounds on November 21 at Selland Arena in Fresno, Calif., as part of the 2010 NWCA All-Star Classic presented by The Marines.

As noted earlier, Yohn and Foster will be the second Colorado vs. Idaho matchup in the event, following the 184-pound matchup released earlier between Joe LeBlanc and Kirk Smith. Yohn hails from Alamosa, Colo., while Foster is from Kamiah, Idaho.

Both were All-Americans last season – Yohn finished eighth at 197 pounds, while Foster finished sixth at 184 pounds.

The two met once last season, in the dual meet between the two schools and before Yohn moved up from 184 to 197. Foster won that match 13-1. It was also Yohn’s only loss at 184 before the move up.

Going back to high school, Foster bested Yohn in a three-period final at 189 pounds at the USA Wrestling Junior Freestyle Nationals in 2006. Yohn won the Junior Nationals the next season.

Yohn finished the season 27-13, while Foster finished up with a 23-6 mark.

Foster is the third Cowboy in the 2010 event and 84th overall. He’s joined this season by Jordan Oliver at 133 pounds and Alan Gelogaev at 285 pounds. Yohn becomes the 27th Golden Gopher to wrestle in the event. 125-pounder Zach Sanders wrestled in the event last year, beating Old Dominion’s James Nicholson.

NEW YORK (Nov. 2, 2010) – Edwin “La Bomba” Rodriguez says with all the confidence in the world that if he had never moved from Moca, Dominican Republic, to Worcester, Mass., at the age of 13, he’d probably be starting in the middle infield for a Major League Baseball team right now.

Baseball was his first love, like so many kids from the Dominican Republic. But he found boxing at the age of 16 and after an outstanding amateur career, Rodriguez (16-0, 12 KOs) finds himself in the toughest fight of his young career when he faces James McGirt Jr. (22-2-1, 1 NC, 11 KOs) in the main event of a super middleweight tripleheader on ShoBox: The New Generation this Friday, Nov. 5, LIVE on SHOWTIME® (11 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast).

The 10-round main event will take place at Scheels Arena in Fargo, N.D. and be promoted by DiBella Entertainment.

In the co-feature, Dyah Davis (18-1, 9 KOs) of Boca Raton, Fla., meets Aaron Pryor Jr., (14-2, 11 KOs) of Cincinnati, in an eight-round battle while Houston’s Marcus “Too Much” Johnson (19-0, 14 KOs) seeks to keep his perfect record intact when he takes on Kevin “The Hitman” Engel (18-3, 1 ND, 15 KOs) of St. Louis, in another eight-round affair.

Rodriguez, 25, is making his second appearance on ShoBox and first appearance in the main event. He is a former amateur star, having won the gold medal at the 2006 National Golden Gloves Championships and the gold at the 2005 U.S. National Amateur Championships, both at 165 pounds. He is currently rated No. 4 by the North American Boxing Federation (NABF) and North American Boxing Organization (NABO).

A self-described chess-nut who says he always has a board close by and competes in online tournaments, Rodriguez recently answered six questions for SHOWTIME Sports.

QUESTION: You recently completed your first full training camp away from home. What was that experience like?

RODRIGUEZ: “I went down to Australia for two weeks to work with Danny Geale and just had some great sparring and training sessions. I returned home on Tuesday (Oct. 26) and am finally starting to feel back to normal. It was the first time I was away from the comforts of home but I was training in a great country. It was very laid back and the people I stayed with were a very nice family and they have become my family. We still stay in touch. I had a great camp. I have no worries and I’m ready.”

QUESTION: What do you know about Fargo, N.D.?

RODRIGUEZ: “Not a thing. It doesn’t matter. It’s going to be a SHOWTIME fight so it’s going to be all over the United States. I’m going to be fighting at home and all over the place. That’s the way I feel about it. Nationally, people will be watching me so I have to be mentally and physically ready for this and I think we’ve done that.”

QUESTION: What do you expect from James McGirt Jr.?

RODRIGUEZ: “I don’t really know what to expect from McGirt. One day he’s a world-beater and a great boxer and the next day he’s just average. I got prepared for the best James McGirt and I don’t care which one shows up. I’m in tip-top shape and I’m ready for him.”

QUESTION: How far could you have gone in baseball if you would have stayed in the Dominican Republic?

RODRIGUEZ: “I think I would be in the Major Leagues right now. Being a champion is not something you get along the way. It’s something you’re born with and I really feel that I have that personality to be a champion and a good athlete. I dedicated myself to being a professional baseball player when I was small; my brothers were all really good. I grew up in a baseball family but none of us turned professional because we all ended up coming to the USA. Everything changed because of the weather and you can’t play all year. If I wasn’t a professional boxer right now I’d be a professional baseball player.”

QUESTION: Who are your favorite baseball players?

RODRIGUEZ: “Alex Rodriguez and Nomar Garciaparra. I used to be called Nomar when I was younger because I used to play shortstop. I believe A-Rod is the most complete player right now. The Red Sox are my home team and they always have a lot of Dominicans. That’s my team.”

QUESTION: You chose to stay with your twin children when they were born prematurely rather than compete in the 2008 Olympics. Do you ever regret that decision?

RODRIGUEZ: “I tried out for the Olympics but to be honest I wasn’t 100 percent there mentally with my children being in the hospital. (Even though he later survived,) I was told my son had a zero percent chance of survival. How could you expect to be on your game with the treatments every day? But I have no regrets. I have a great family. I love my kids. I wanted to be an Olympian and I worked hard for that but for some reason, good or bad, it didn’t work out. But everything is working out now so I have no regrets. You can’t live life that way. I can’t live like the world owes me something because it doesn’t. You get the cards you’re dealt with and try and do the best you can.”

ATHENS, Ohio-Ohio senior Germane Lindsey (Cincinnati, Ohio) has been selected to wrestle in the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) All-Star Classic on Sunday, November 21st at Selland Arena in Fresno, California.

Lindsey went 30-9 en route to the NCAA quarterfinals last year despite being unseeded, beating third-seeded Mike Thorn of Minnesota in the process. He lost a thrilling overtime match in the quarters to eventual finalist Montell Marion of Iowa and ended the tournament with his first All-American honor and the program’s 24th overall.

Lindsey will face Oklahoma’s Zack Bailey in Fresno. Bailey, who has battled injuries much of his career, went 31-8 in 2010 and finished the season winning 21 of his last 24 matches. He won six straight in the consolations to reach the third-place match in 2010, falling to Ohio State’s Reece Humphrey and finishing fourth.

Lindsey is the 11th Bobcat to wrestle in the event and first since 2010 Kermit Blosser Hall of Fame inductee Jake Percival wrestled in the event at 157 pounds in 2004. The doors open at 2:00 p.m. PT. Bailey Selected for NWCA All-Star Classic

NORMAN, Okla. – Oklahoma senior Zack Bailey was selected to participate in the 45th-annual NWCA All-Star Classic on Sunday, Nov. 21, in Fresno, California at the Selland Arena.

Bailey, a senior from Kansas City, Mo., will take on Ohio’s Germane Lindsey in the 141 pound All-Star matchup.

“What a tremendous honor for Zack Bailey, who couldn’t be more deserving,” head coach Jack Spates said. “This is a kid who showed tremendous courage and character in the midst of great adversity. He has had numerous, what would be for other people, career ending injuries and yet he has come back and took fourth at the NCAAs, led our team to a fifth place finish and really serves as a model for our young men. He has become an excellent student and is an outstanding young man off the mat. We are very proud of him.”

Last season Bailey went 31-8 and finished the season winning 21 of his last 24 matches. He won six-straight in the NCAA consolations where he finished fourth overall and was named a 2010 All-American. In addition, Bailey earned a silver medal at the 2010 Big 12 Championships. Bailey accomplished all these feats despite suffering season-ending shoulder injuries three times, all of which resulted in reconstructive surgery.

“This is an event in which they select the top-two wrestlers in America at each weight, so it is a great honor to have him represent the University of Oklahoma,” Spates said.

Bailey’s the 45th Sooner wrestler to compete in the event and first since 2006 when Matt Storniolo and Sam Hazewinkel both represented the Sooners.

The 45th Annual NWCA All-Star Classic Presented by The Marines will be held at the Selland Arena in Fresno, Calif., on Sunday, Nov. 21, 2010. The doors open at 2:00 p.m. The All-Star Classic follows a weekend of fundraising events.
