PHILADELPHIA (September 1, 2009)—On Saturday night September 26th boxing debuts at the Yesha Center in South Philadelphia with two big title fights plus hard hitting Super Middleweight Brian Cohen in the three top fights on the card.

In a battle for the UBC Lightweight title, undefeated “Hammering” Hank Lundy risks his undefeated record when he battles an opponent to be named.

Lundy of Philadelphia brings in a record of 14-0-1 with eight knockouts and is quickly becoming one of the top fighters in talent rich Philadelphia.

Lundy has received accolades for not only his lightning quick hands and fan friendly style but his willingness to take on all comers as evidenced by a recent stretch where he took on Darnell Jiles Jr. (8-0), Esteban Almarez (7-0) and Jason Cintron (10-0) within a five fight span.

Lundy is coming off a fifth round stoppage over Josh Beeman (4-3-3) on July 17th in Lincoln, Rhode Island.

In the second title fight, Dhafir “No Fear” Smith will battle Aaron Pryor Jr. for the UBC Super Middleweight title.

Smith of Upper Darby, PA has a record of 21-19-6 with four knockouts but that doesn’t even begin to tell the story.

At just twenty-six years old, Smith has already fought some of the best fighters in the world between the Super Middleweight and Light Heavyweight divisions.

Pryor Jr. has been fighting as a pro since 2005 on the heels of his father who is one of the legends of the sport.

Pryor has carved out a nice career for himself as the Cincinnati native has a record of 12-2 with nine knockouts which includes a third round stoppage over former U.S Olympian Dante Craig last August 30th.

Both of those losses have come in the last three bouts which include his last bout where he dropped a six round majority decision to Julius Kennedy on April 25th.

Cohen has a record of 12-2 with eleven of those wins coming by knockout.

Cohen has scored three consecutive stoppages which include his last outing when he took care of James Morrow in one round on August 29 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

A full undercard has been assembled it is led by a six round Cruiserweight bout between Pedro Martinez (5-2, 3 KO’s) of Philadelphia battling the well-tested Harvey Jolly (9-11-1, 6 KO’s) of Adrian, Michigan.

In a Ladies Jr. Lightweight affair, Lakeysha Williams (9-14-3, 1 KO) of Philadelphia takes on an opponent to be named in a bout scheduled for four rounds.

In a battle of pro debuting Cruiserweights, Dan Grafton and Walter Tyler will square off in a bout scheduled for four rounds.

In a ladies Welterweight bout, Natalie Brown (5-1, 3 KO’s) of Mississauga, Ontario takes on an opponent to be named.

Heavyweight John Mercurio (2-0, 2 KO’s) will see action in a four round Heavyweight bout.

NEW YORK (August 31, 2009) – Budding superstar and two-time All-American wrestler at the University of Missouri, Tyron “T-Wood’’ Woodley (5-0) of St. Louis, will face his sternest test to date when he meets former Tito Ortiz protégé, Zach “The Lisbon Outlaw’’ Light (4-8) of Huntington Beach, Calif., in a welterweight (170 pounds) fight at the STRIKEFORCE Challengers event in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on Friday, Sept. 25.

The three-round, 5-minute mixed martial arts (MMA) encounter at SpiritBank Event Center will be one of the five fights televised live on SHOWTIME.

It will be the second STRIKEFORCE start for Woodley, the 11th of 13 children raised mostly by a single mother. In an impressive debut, he registered a first round (4:20) submission (Brabo choke) over Sal Woods during the non-televised portion of the “Lawler vs. Shields’’ event at Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Missouri on June 6, 2009.

A popular up-and-comer, the 5-foot-9, 27-year-old Woodley has been victorious by submission in all of his outings since turning pro on Feb. 27, 2009. His initial two starts lasted a combined 1:57 and he has yet to hear the bell for the second round.

“I’m really excited to be fighting in the Challengers series on SHOWTIME,’’ he said. “Any time a major organization like STRIKEFORCE calls, you’ve got to seize the opportunity. I’m trying to break down doors.’’

Before turning to MMA, the talented Woodley was Missouri’s first conference wrestling champion. He went 48-0 and won a state championship during his senior year at McCluer High in St. Louis.

So, this is a young man accustomed to winning. But he had to overcome a lot, and his teenage years were definitely a struggle after his father left the family behind when “T-Wood’’ was 10.

“My mom deserves credit,’’ said Woodley, who not only persevered but also reconciled with his Dad. “I learned a lot. Having that many people in the house with limited resources made me a better person.’’

While still relatively unknown outside St. Louis, the highly regarded newcomer remains one to watch. “I continue to work hard on whatever it takes that I can incorporate into my wrestling style that will make me better,’’ said Woodley, who credits the birth of his son, Tyron Jr., as a turning point in his life. “I just want to improve. My goal is to look completely different every fight.

“I’m an experienced wrestler, but a baby in MMA. The most important thing is to be able to go out and compete without hesitation. If I do that, I’ll win. In MMA, I get into that zone. I’m able to block things out. Hopefully, that will become routine for me. There’s a lot more at stake every fight.

“But sometimes it doesn’t matter who’s the best; it’s who wants it the most. Good people lose all the time. To go out there and take by force what’s yours is not something you get to do in every sport.’’

Light was born and raised in Lisbon, Iowa. On the comeback trail, the 5-foot-8, 35-year-old also possesses a strong wrestling pedigree and has trained with one of the biggest names in the sport.

“I moved to California with nothing but a duffle bag and ended up meeting Tito,’’ said Light, who hopes to shine brightly in his first appearance before a paying audience since Nov. 11, 2008. “After getting to know me, he offered me a spot on Team Punishment.”

In the main event on Sept. 25, American military hero Tim Kennedy (10-2) of Fayetteville, N.C., will face unbeaten Zak Cummings (10-0) of Springfield, Missouri in a middleweight (185 pounds) scrap.

In a second SHOWTIME fight, K-1 legend and six-time world kickboxing champion, Ray “Sugarfoot” Sefo (1-0) of Las Vegas takes on Alabama-born Kevin “The Shaman” Jordan (11-7) in a heavyweight match.

SpiritBank Event Center doors will open at 7:15 p.m. CT for the STRIKEFORCE Challengers event and the first preliminary bout will begin at 8 p.m.

Amongst the Oklahomans scheduled to appear on the card are Tulsa rivals Travis “The Dark Knight” Calanoc (4-0) and Thomas Longacre (4-0), who will put their unbeaten records on the line against each.

The live SHOWTIME telecast will begin at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the west coast).

World championship MMA promotion STRIKEFORCE will produce the event at SpiritBank Event Center along with eXtreme Fighting promoter and five-time world kickboxing champion Dale “Apollo” Cook.

Calderon-Mayol II, Martinez-Rodriguez world title fights Sept. 12 PPV live from San Juan

HOBOKEN, N.J. (August 31, 2009) – WBO light flyweight champion Ivan “Iron Boy” Calderon (32-0-1, 6 KOs), also The Ring magazine’s titlist, defends both belts September 12 against No. 1 contender Rodel “Kid Rapido” Mayol (25-3-1, 19 KOs) in the 12-round main event headlining the “Undefeated Champions” pay per view event, airing live in the United States from the Coliseum of Puerto Rico in San Juan.

WBO super featherweight title-holder Roman “Rocky” Martinez (22-0-1, 13 KOs) makes his first title defense in the 12-round co-feature WBO No. 9 rated Vincente Martin “El Mono” Rodriguez (25-2-1, 13 KOs).

“The fight at the time of the stoppage was very tight,” Calderon said from training camp in Puerto Rico. “I started very slow but, between rounds, I was getting my rhythm. The fight was my first in Madison Square Garden and I felt pressure to look good and put on a good performance. Mayol has fast hands. He came to box, not to try for a knockout like everybody else. He’s one of the best fighters in the world right now in the 108-pound division.

“Fans can always expect from me to hit and not be hit. I am the best pure boxer in the business and I need to do that to win this fight. I want to unify my title with the other champions – Edgar Sosa (WBC), Brian Viloria (IBF) and Giovanni Segura (WBA) – and then try and move up to 112 pounds to become world champion in three divisions and retire undefeated. I want everybody to remember me as the best pure fighter in the world and a champion who helps his people.”

European Champ Luke Campbell To Face Ray Vargas At World Championships In Milan

European Amateur Boxing Champion Luke Campbell has drawn Mexico’s Ray Vargas in the first round of the amateur World Championships which starts on the 1st September in Milan, Italy.

Campbell, a two-time ABA Champion, was crowned European Bantamweight (54kg) Champion at the European Championships in Liverpool last November. His path to glory was not an easy one. In the quarterfinal he faced and defeated the Moldovan Olympic bronze medal winner, Veaceslav Gojan, before progressing to the final after an excellent 4-1 points victory over Germany’s Denis Makarov. Even more impressive was that this was his event debut.

The quietly spoken 21 year old from Hull then made history by becoming the first British boxer to win a European gold medal for 47 years following his magnificent defeat of the highly experienced Bulgarian Detelin Dalakliev to secure the Bantamweight (54kg) title.

The last English boxer to win a European gold medal was Frankie Taylor, who won the Featherweight (57kg) title at the Belgrade Games, Yugoslavia in June 1961, also at the same event Melbourne Olympic Champion, Scotland’s Dick McTaggart, won gold in the (Lightweight) 60kg class.

After learning that Mexico’s Vargas was to be his first round opponent Campbell said, “I don’t know anything about him (Ray Vargas). I’m sure he’s a top class fighter.

This is my first World Championships and I understand it’s all about learning and helping me prepare for the 2012 Olympics, so I’m going to go out there, do my best, and enjoy every minute of it.”

Luke Campbell along with fellow British team mates Tommy Stubbs, Khalid Yafai, Andrew Selby, Thomas Stalker, Scott Cardle and Steve Simmons will be competing at the World Championships in Milan, Italy, 1st-12th September 2009.

PHILIPPINE SENSATION JASON SIA TO MAKE PRO DEBUT AT THE LEGENDARY BLUE HORIZON ON SEPTEMBER 11TH

PHILADELPHIA (August 31, 2009)—through the years, boxing has been built on fans getting behind fighters of a particular ethnic group. Over the past few years, a rabid fan base of Filipino boxing fans has emerged with the success of Manny Pacquiao.

Sia then started training at the famed La Brea Gym in Los Angeles before heading east to Philadelphia.

“Even know I been in this country most of my life, my heritage is very important to me. It is who I am”, said Sia.

“I see Manny Pacquiao as more than just a boxer. He is a national hero-A Humanitarian.”

That is just one of thirteen big bouts scheduled for September as in the main event Jr. Welterweight Steve Upsher Chambers (19-1-1, 5 KO’s) of Philadelphia takes on an opponent to be named.

In the co-feature, it will be an eight round Jr. Middleweight tussle, Darren Fallen (12-4-1, 6 KO’s) takes on rugged Joshua Onyango (14-17-1, 11 KO’s)
