Red-Hot Finisher Brian Foster Ready to Stir Up Bellator Welterweight Division and Make Title Run

Posted on | November 1, 2011 | No Comments

CHICAGO, Ill. (November 1, 2011) — Brian Foster has a message for the Bellator welterweight division and its champion Ben Askren:

“I’m coming.”

The former UFC fighter who won his last two fights in the UFC and who sports a 18-5 record as a welterweight has recently signed with Bellator Fighting Championships in a deal that adds another legitimate contender to Bellator’s already stacked welterweight division. Currently riding a four-fight win streak, including a TKO win over Forrest Petz and a submission victory against Matt Brown during his UFC run, Foster, who has finished all 18 of his career wins, is hitting his stride and has one thing on his mind.

“I’m getting that belt,” Foster said. “I want to fight the best. I want to fight Ben Askren and take home that belt. I ran through my last two opponents and I’m better than I’ve ever been. I’m very happy to be a part of Bellator and I’m coming for the top spot.

The Granite City, Illinois fighter has never gone to a decision in his career. With 10 wins by submission and eight by TKO/KO, the exciting Foster should add another threat to an already stacked welterweight division. Despite a medical setback in his career, Foster says he’s now 100 percent healthy and ready to start on his road to the championship.

“I’ve been seen by two of the best doctors in the state, they’ve medically cleared me and I feel great,” Foster added. “I’m looking forward to facing Bellator’s best and becoming the next welterweight champion.”

LAS VEGAS (November 1, 2011) – World Boxing Association (“WBA”) and International Boxing Association (“IBA”) light heavyweight World champion Beibut Shumenov andGoossen Tutor Promotions have settled their lawsuit and the disputes between them. They have agreed that their Promotional Contract is terminated and have amicably parted ways.

Shumenov (12-1, 8 KOs), a 2004 Kazakhstan Olympian, is promoted by Las Vegas-based KZ Event Productions, which is owned and operated by the Shumenov brothers, Beibut and Chingis.

“I want to fight the best to be considered the best 175 pounder in the world,” Shumenov said. “I’ve heard that (Nathan) Cleverly, who won the WBO title after (Juergen) Braehmer was stripped, and (IBF champion Tavoris) Cloud have mentioned my name, but, truth be told, we have never been contacted by either one of their promoters to unify.

“All of these guys talking about unifying, well, if they really want to make it happen, all they have to do is contact us. I told Pascal that I’m from Kazakhstan, he lives in Canada; so, we should fight in the capital of boxing, Las Vegas. Same goes for Cleverly, who is from the United Kingdom.

“I’m getting ready and looking forward to a fresh New Year. Hopefully, one of the other light heavyweight world champions will put his title belt on the line against mine in a unification fight in 2012. ”

Shumenov set a light heavyweight record for capturing a world title in the fewest career fights, 10, when (Jan. 29, 2010) he won a 12-round decision against Gabriel Campillo in Las Vegas. In three successful world title defenses, Shumenov won a unanimous 12-round decision versus No. 1 mandatory challenger and previously undefeated Viacheslav Uzelkov (UDEC12), followed by a six-round knockout of three-time world champion William Joppy (KO6), and then his victory in July by ninth-round TKO versus three-time world title challenger Danny Santiago.

“We keep hearing and reading about all these offers made to Beibut,” noted Hall of Fame promoter Don Chargin, who serves as Shumenov’s advisor. “We’ve only talked with Pascal, who was told that Beibut would fight him at a neutral site. I intend to reach out to Cleverly’s promoter, Frank Warren, to see if they’re serious about fighting a unification with Beibut. He is ready, willing and able to fight Cleverly. We won’t turn down a fair deal with any of the other world champions.

“Over the years, I’ve worked with many different people in this business, and Beibut is an absolute joy to be with and always a pleasure. Nobody trains harder than Beibut and he’s improving every day. Our goal in 2012 is to go after all of the world champions who’ve said they made offers to fight Beibut. We hope something happens in that respect. After Beibut makes a title defense in Las Vegas, I’d love to see him defend his title before 50,000-60,000 in Kazakhstan. Beibut will never stop trying to unify the world light heavyweight title.”

In only 13 pro fights, Beibut has defeated four world champions (Campillo, Joppy, Byron Mitchell and Montell Griffin), as well as three world title challengers (Uzelkov, Santiago and Epifanio Mendoza

UFC’s Hendricks V Jon Fitch Dec 30th, The Happy Beard Man Talks to Takedown

Posted on | November 1, 2011 | No Comments

Article by: Antwan Jackson of Bleacher Report

Jon Fitch is arguably the No. 2 welterweight in the UFC.  The Gray Maynard of the welterweight division, he’s fought some of the sport’s best, including B.J. Penn, Georges St-Pierre and Thiago Alves.  He’s made it very clear to matchmaker Joe Silva and head man Dana White that he only wanted to fight either Penn or GSP. When that didn’t come to fruition, he opted to agree to what some saw as a tune-up fight versus Johny Hendricks at UFC 141.

One problem with that:

Hendricks is a hot welterweight looking for a three-fight win streak (including a knockout of the night win over TJ Waldburger at UFC Fight Night 24) to add to his fabulous record of 11-1.  He’s not whom Fitch would want as a tune-up for a title shot.

With nothing to lose and everything to gain, Hendricks looks to move into contender status with an upset of Fitch.  But how will he do it?  Let’s take an in depth look at the man known as the “Happy Beard Guy.”

Jon Fitch has an excellent wrestling pedigree, which serves as the basis of how he gets his wins.  He was a four-year letterman and team captain at Purdue University under the tutelage of former Pride fighter Tom Erikson.  His strategy in most fights is to use conditioning and wrestling to wear the opponent down either in the clinch or on the ground.  The consensus is that he doesn’t look to finish fights, but rather utilizes the “lay and pray” method that has gotten the dubious title of having the most decision victories in UFC history along with GSP.

The counter for his wrestling is the stellar wrestling background of Oklahoma State All-American Johny Hendricks.  A four-time All-American, three-time Big 12 conference champion and two-time national champion, Hendricks appears to be more skilled than Fitch in the area of wrestling.

With this being the case, takedowns will be hard to get, and it allows Hendricks to dictate the fight—something previous fighters were unable to do against Fitch.

Jon Fitch hasn’t knocked anyone out since 2006.  He uses his hands the same way the Dallas Cowboys use their running game.  Everybody knows it doesn’t work, but they do it just to keep their opponent honest. He hasn’t learned what boxing can do for him from his training partner and good friend Josh Koscheck. Being multi-dimensional helps every fighter, and that’s not something Fitch can say he emulates.

Johny Hendricks, on the other hand, has shown he is more than willing to stand and trade with anyone and expects to come out on top.  He has good boxing technique and power that is similar to that of Koscheck. Hendricks has a killer instinct that won’t allow Fitch to maintain a slow, easy pace for himself.

Hendricks will force pugilistic action.  Fitch won’t like that much.

Hendricks enters this fight with absolutely nothing to lose.  He received a major step up in competition. Whether it was warranted and well deserved, some would debate.  However, he has an opportunity to stake his claim as a welterweight to be reckoned with in the division.

What happens if Hendricks defeats Fitch

If UCLA were to beat Alabama by even the smallest of margins, everyone is going to take notice.  That’s similar to the luxury Hendricks has in this fight.  If he loses, no big deal—it was expected to happen.  He would draw on those experiences as he systematically improves his physical game as well as his mental game.

But if he wins?  That changes everything for him.  He would immediately be thrust into a contender battle and the Silva-White tag team would try to match him up against the top-tier welterweights to move him into title contention.  His purses would increase, his visibility would increase and we would get to see more of that incomparable beard.

It’s truly a win-win for Hendricks, so he should enter the cage with no monkey on his back to maintain like Fitch will have.  He should be loose and let punches fly and put Fitch in compromising situations that will allow us to see Fitch fight his way out, or fold under the bearded pressure.

Can Fitch continue his lackluster domination

Jake Herbert Earns Pan Am Gold, Looks to Russians at NYAC, Talks to Takedown

Posted on | November 1, 2011 | No Comments

GUADALAJARA, Mexico – Two U.S. wrestlers won gold-medals and the team had four total medals in men’s freestyle at the Pan American Games competition on Sunday at the CODE II Gymnasium.

Capturing gold medals were Jake Herbert (Ann Arbor, Mich./New York AC) at 84 kg/185 lbs. and Tervel Dlagnev (Columbus, Ohio/Sunkist Kids) at 120 kg/264.5 lbs.

Herbert, defeated Humberto Arencibia of Cuba in the finals, 1-0, 4-3.

The first period went to the clinch with Arencibia getting Herbert’s leg. Officials gave Arencibia one point while Herbert defended, but the U.S. protested and it was upheld. They restarted the clinch and Herbert held on again to score the point. In the second period, a three-point move by Herbert was key to the victory.

“It was huge. I had to defend hard in the clinch to win the first period. It was great to be a little stronger, drive through him and force him on his back on the edge for a 3-0 lead in the second period,” said Herbert.

Herbert was a 2009 World silver medalist, while Arencibia was third at the 2011 Pan American Championships.

In his first match, Herbert beat Jaime Espinal of Puerto Rico, 3-2, 2-0. Espinal lives in State College, Pa. and trains with the Nittany Lion WC. In the semifinals, Herbert beat Jose Diaz of Venezuela, 1-0, 2-1.

Dlagnev defeated Sunny Dhinsa of Canada in the finals, 2-0, 6-0, controlling the action the entire way. In the second period, Dlagnev scored a quick takedown and turned Dhinsa for a fast technical fall.

Dlagnev opened with a dominant technical fall win over Carlos Delgado of Ecuador, 6-0, 7-0. In the semifinals, he beat Disney Rodriguez of Cuba, 1-0, 5-0. Rodriguez was fifth in the 2008 Olympic Games.

“It was good. The Cuban in the semis wrestled for a medal twice at Worlds and the Olympics. He’s a good wrestler. Cuba comes here to win, so it was a good win for me. The Canadian is a young kid but he’s tough. This is a good tournament to get a gold,” said Dlagnev.

Dlagnev was a 2009 World bronze medalist and placed fifth in the 2011 World Championships. He was a champion at the 2010 Pan American Championships.

Winning a silver medal was Obe Blanc (Stillwater, Okla./Gator WC) at 55 kg/121 lbs. He was defeated in the gold-medal match by Juan Ramirez of the Dominican Republic, 1-0, 2-1. Ramirez won the first period on a clinch. In the second period, Blanc led 1-0 and officials gave Ramirez a pushout with one second left to win. The U.S. protested but the call was upheld, and Ramirez got an additional point.

“I didn’t see (the point). I down know. The video didn’t show anything. I started out a little too late. His style is very defensive, blocking all the time. In the second period, I opened him up, but it was still too late. Lesson learned,” said Blanc.

Blanc was a 2010 U.S. World Team member. Ramirez was fifth in the 2011 Pan American Championships.

Blanc won his only match of the morning session, shutting out Canada’s Junior World Team member Steven Takahashi, 2-0, 6-0.

Capturing a bronze medal was Teyon Ware (State College, Pa./Nittany Lion WC) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. He won his bronze-medal match against Edison Hurtado of Colombia, 1-1, 4-1, 6-0. After losing the first period, Ware wore Hurtado down, winning a tight second period. He dominated the third period for a technical fall.

“I give myself a C for my wrestling. It let’s me know I have a long way to go. I told myself I had to fight back hard in the bronze match. He’s a strong guy, but strong guys get tired,” said Ware.

Ware opened by defeating Ryan Lue of Canada, 0-2, 1-0, 1-0. In the semifinals, he was beaten by 2011 World bronze medalist Livan Lopez of Cuba, 0-5, 1-4.

U.S. coach Zeke Jones assessed the day for Team USA.

“It was good. We could have done a little better, but we are improving. Obe’s loss was a little hard, but the overall effort was good,” said Jones.

Two U.S. wrestlers will compete on Monday, the final day of the Pan American Games wrestling competition, 2011 World champion Jordan Burroughs (Lincoln, Neb./Sunkist Kids) at 74 kg/163 lbs. and 2011 World bronze medalist Jake Varner (State College, Pa./Nittany Lion WC) at 96 kg/211.5 lbs.

Another Plymouth, MA Rumble in the Jungle: CFX 18 Set For November 19th

www.cagefx.com

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Cage Fighting Xtreme returns to a renovated JunglePlex in Plymouth, MA on November 19, 2011 for another full slate of exciting mixed martial arts fights. The extensive card is scheduled to feature some of the best professional and amateur mixed martial arts fighters in the New England area.

“We’re thrilled to bring MMA fans the 18th installment of CageFX,” Said Promoter Linda Shields. “It doesn’t get easier with quantity, but quality always improves. I’m grateful to have so many awesome fights to cheer about.”

Fans will be treated to two incredible professional title fights pitting 145-pounders and current CFX Featherweight Champion Frank Sforza (South Shore Sportfighting) of Rockland,Massachusetts against Jeremy Ross (AFT) ofLudlow, MA; and 185-pounders Robby Roberts (Fight Factory MMA) of Orange, MA against Jason Dublin (Dublin Fight Factory) of Lynn, MA.

Dublin and Roberts battled earlier in their careers with Dublin coming away with the first-round TKO win in their initial contest back in June of 2009, which was part of a previous Rumble in the Jungle event (CFX 3). Roberts looks to avenge the loss and maintain his status as the current Cage Fighting Xtreme 185-pound Champion.

“This fight has a lot going on,” Roberts explains. “It’s a title fight and a rematch, and the defending champ is the one who lost the first fight. It’s like Edgar versus Maynard if they were overweight and slower but could hit harder. It’s gonna be a good one.”

During a recent interview on www.fightradio.info, Super Heavyweight Lee Beane (Wai Kru) of Bridgewater, Massachusetts promised that no matter what happens in his fight with Bobby Favors (Triple Threat MMA), “It’s gonna end in a violent fashion.” Favors is coming all the way to Plymouth from Fairport Harbor, Ohio for this fight.

The amateur competition will also be highlighted by two title tilts. The first one is at 170 pounds between North Easton, MassachusettsNative and Orthopedic Surgeon David Worman, fighting out of ABD in Easton, and Paul Nischo, fighting out of Tri-Force MMA inPawtucket, RI.

“I can’t wait for this fight. The opportunity to go up against a skilled, experienced fighter like Paul gives me a chance to put all of my hard work and training to the test,” an eager and confident Worman said about his shot at the title. “I plan on bringing a complete package to this fight and am prepared to go wherever it needs to be taken… on our feet or down to the ground. My intention is to fight for an early finish, but you know I’ll be ready to take it as deep into the rounds as necessary. The fact that this is a title fight makes it even more exciting. Holding a title makes you the man on top, and that’s where I always want to be. I can’t wait to represent my school, America’s Best Defense, and CageFX as the amateur welter weight champion.”

Worman’s opponent points to a favorite quote of his in describing what’s going through his mind before this fight. “You can have anything you want if you are willing to give up the belief that you can’t have it,” is a mantra Paul Nischo is a strong believer in.

“This title fight means everything to me,” Nischo explains. “To have the opportunity to fight for a belt and represent my team is something I always thought of, but I never imagined it happening so quickly in my amateur career. It’s kinda crazy. I plan on holding nothing back, leaving everything in the cage, and bringing that belt back to Rhode Island.”

Mike Drohan (Lakeville MMA) of Middleboro, Massachusetts also takes on Andrew Hughes (Team Irish) of Bangor, Maine for the 185-pound amateur title. Drohan is excited to be battling in his second amateur title fight. “I am very thankful for the opportunities CFX has offered me. My first amateur title felt amazing to get,” Drohan said. “This one would feel even better! I just hope Andrew is training as hard as me so we can put on an exciting and action packed fight.”

Dave Lachapple (SSSF) will face of in what promises to be a real war with Barrington Douse of AFT at 140 pounds as well. Among the amateur heavyweight contests will be Pat Walsh (Wai Kru) from Allston, Massachusetts facing James Chaplin (Pin2Win) ofPhoenix, New York.

Rounding out the card, Fernando Perez (CCFA) of Plymouth, Massachusetts will square off with Lee Metcaf (SSSF) of Hanson,Massachusetts in a fight that has the potential to be fight of the night.

A full detailed fight card will be announced shortly.

Tickets for “Rumble in the Jungle” can be purchased by calling CageFX at 781.510.6000 or online at www.cagefx.com. Doors open 6:30 PM EST with the first bout scheduled for 7 PM sharp.

BOSTON – The Boston University wrestling program will host one of its biggest events ever on Sunday, Nov. 6, when it opens its 2011-12 season with the Nor’Easter Duals. The Terriers will take on both Iowa State and Joe Heskett and the Black Knights of Army at Case Gym with hopes of attracting the largest college wrestling crowd in New England history.

Competition starts at 3 p.m. when the Black Knights take on Iowa State. Heskett’s squad will then wrestle BU at 5 p.m. Boston closes out the event against the Cyclones at 7 p.m.

The Terriers enter the 2011-12 campaign with arguably their best roster ever and are ranked as high as 26th in the nation in the preseason polls with three NCAA qualifiers returning in seniors John Hall (197) and Fred Santaite (133) and junior Hunter Meys (174). Perennial power Iowa State features nine ranked wrestlers on its roster and Army is always a tough opponent.

Scott Casber, host of the national wrestling show Takedown Radio, will serve as the public-address announcer for all three duals, which will be streamed live through Terrier TV on GoTerriers.com

Prior to the matches, the Terriers will host a wrestling clinic from 9:30-12:30. Head coach Carl Adams, who enters his 31st season at the helm of the BU program, has assembled a spectacular clinic staff that will feature Olympic goal-medalist Kevin Jackson and former NCAA champions such as Adams, Joe Heskett and Jonathan Reader. The six members of the staff combined to earn 18 NCAA All-America honors over the course of their careers.

Jackson is the head coach at Iowa State and Heskett heads up the Army program. Adams, Jackson and Heskett all wrestled collegiately at Iowa State.

This will be an opportunity for New England coaches, wrestlers and fans to be in one location to watch college wrestling at a high level in addition to learning strategy and technique from some of the best in the business.
Coaches and wrestlers can pre-register for the clinic online at CarlAdams.com. The pre-registration fee for coaches is $45 ($50 at the door) and the fee for students is $40 ($45 at the door). Any team bringing 10 or more students will be charged a group rate of $35 per person.
